We’re down to two on American Idol . The final two. Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez. One is a young white male who is easy on the eyes and plays the guitar. In other words: the same exact pedigree as the last four winners. The other has a beautiful voice and hasn’t been afraid all year long of tacking such major artists as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. She’s responsible for the single most memorable American Idol performance of the season. Either would be a worthy champion. Only one will wear the crown next Thursday night. Who do you want it to be?

‘Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand,’ expert tells MTV News about late singer’s tunes being all over pop culture. By Kara Warner Donna Summer Photo: Fotos International/Getty Images The news of Donna Summer’s untimely passing Thursday (May 17) weighed heavily on all those who knew and loved the undisputed Queen of Disco. Despite the fact that “disco fever” lived and basically died in the 1970s, Summer’s music continues to live on. Her many unforgettable hits like “Last Dance,” “Love to Love You Baby” and “She Works Hard for the Money” transcended genres and left an indelible mark on all pop culture , from the music charts to television and film. A quick perusal of Summer’s eclectic IMDb page demonstrates the fact that her music is the go-to for filmmakers and show-runners looking for that perfect dance number in their TV show or film. “Her songs are so iconic that people use them as shorthand either to convey disco or those songs lend themselves to montage-type stuff,” Entertainment Weekly music editor Leah Greenblatt told MTV News. ” ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ is always used for when a lady is going about her business. Songs like ‘Love to Love You’ and ‘I Feel Love’ are almost like a ‘bow-chicka-bow-wow,’ in that they always convey sex, whether that’s in an ironic way or in a real way.” Two relatively recent comedic examples include the memorable love scene/orgy in “Zoolander” set to “Love to Love You” and Cameron Diaz’s group dance number in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle,” set to “Last Dance.” “A lot of her songs were almost cinematic in the way that their lyrics and music were arranged,” Greenblatt said of the repeated use of Summer’s songs for television and film. “A lot of [scenes] can go out or end on ‘Last Dance.’ ‘She Works Hard for the Money’ is all about when a woman has to go out and earn in a movie; it’s the perfect music cue. And when someone is having a threesome with a Sherpa [like in ‘Zoolander’], her music was so great for that.” Greenblatt went on to say that Summer’s songs will continue to provide the soundtrack to key moments in our lives. For photos of Donna Summer through the years, click here. “There was a time when disco was really derided and dismissed, but it would be really hard to find a person over 25 or 30 who doesn’t have these songs as part of their DNA. Whether or not you liked disco, it’s really hard to deny her voice and her talent,” she said. “Her music stands out because she was such a great singer and because a lot of her songs were about emotions too. You can really feel in her voice that she means it. “Also, how many artists have music that has been featured on ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Parks and Recreation’ and in ‘Frost/Nixon’?” Greenblatt added. “For whatever reason, comedians love to use her too. There’s the campy tributes but also a sincere love for her. And anytime anyone takes their clothes off [in TV or film], someone has got to play ‘Hot Stuff.’ ” Share your condolences for Donna Summer’s friends, family and fans in the comments or on Facebook . Disco icon Donna Summer passed away today at the age of 63, reportedly succumbing to cancer. But while most folks remember the singer for once-ubiquitous disco classics like “Bad Girls” and “Love to Love You Baby,” and while many a film used her hit singles to great effect (recall the “Hot Stuff” scene from The Full Monty , or her own turn as an aspiring disco singer in Thank God It’s Friday ), let’s take a look back at a relatively underrated Donna Summer gem: The love theme from 1977’s The Deep . By 1977, Summer had already made a name for herself with a number of disco hits, but then came The Deep . The film’s “Down Deep Inside” combined the sultry vocals of Summer with the orchestral stylings of prolific James Bond composer John Barry, with appropriately dreamy results. Summer’s lyrics layered over Barry’s arrangement, plus a disco beat (of course) helped make the theme song from the Peter Yates-directed underwater adventure thriller a charted dance hit; it also earned Summer and Barry a shared Golden Globe nomination for Best Song. A slower version of the song included in the film’s soundtrack LP turns the theme into a sublime, seductive ballad. Of course, Summer went on to contribute to a number of movie soundtracks: Thank God It’s Friday appearance the following year also yielded her hit single “Last Dance,” and just a few years later she contributed “On the Radio” to 1980’s Foxes . And who could forget the inspirational “The Power of One,” from the soundtrack to Pokémon: The Movie ? (Certainly not Herman Cain .) R.I.P. to the Queen of Disco.
Emily Maynard wouldn’t reveal if she gets engaged on The Bachelorette this season, though she says she “was happy before the show, but really happy now.” She also says the road to the final rose was secondary to protecting her little girl . On a conference call with reporters, she described how that influenced things: “If I was a single 26-year-old without a daughter, I’d be doing the same things the other Bachelorettes did. But Ricki is always at the forefront of my mind.” “I wouldn’t get in a hot tub on a first date in my everyday life so I sure as hell am not going to do it on [TV]. I like to keep Ricki sheltered to a point.” “She’s not at an age where she can even begin to understand the reason for the cameras. I told her it was for a very elaborate home video that she could watch way down the road. … Ricki’s life was not really affected at all.” “She was very protected throughout the entire process. She didn’t see the guys. I got to spend a lot of time with her, take her to school and do all my mom stuff.” As for how Emily Maynard finally came around to doing the show? “I had a million reservations and I said no to anybody who would listen. But time went on, we started talking again, and they were so accommodating that it was [too] great an opportunity to pass up,” the 26-year-old explained. “I had a great group of guys. I had the time of my life and learned so much about myself. It was the best experience getting to travel and to give Ricki the opportunity to see things she wouldn’t have otherwise.” The guys came in having an image of me in their head but as they got to know me better, they all said, [I was] nothing like they thought. It was a good thing.” “I’m feisty and sassy. It takes a little bit for me to really feel comfortable but I’ve never been called ‘boring’ in my normal everyday life.” As for which guys make it to the end? The Bachelorette spoilers we’ve compiled so far give you a fairly good idea of who the leading candidates are …
