#BlackLivesMatter: NY Special Prosecutor Launches Investigation Into Death Of Raynette Turner, 1 Of 5 Women To Recently Die In Jail Cell

New York Attorney General Investigating Suspicious Death Of Jailed Woman Much like #SandraBland , Raynette Turner’s family is desperately seeking answers to how an arrest over a petty crime ended with the loss of her life. Via Huff Po reports : New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Monday that his office will launch a formal investigation into the death of Raynette Turner, the mother of eight who died in a Mount Vernon, New York, jail cell while in police custody last week. “My office’s Special Investigations and Prosecutions Unit will investigate the death of Raynette Turner, consistent with Executive Order No. 147 and a conforming order to be issued by the Governor at my request,” Schneiderman said in a statement. It’s the first such investigation since Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) last month issued an executive order appointing Schneiderman as special prosecutor in all cases where an unarmed civilian dies at the hands of police. Turner, 42, was arrested on Saturday, July 25 after allegedly shoplifting some crab legs from a grocery store. With no judges working on Sundays to arraign her in court on the misdemeanor charge, police officers opted to keep Turner in custody through the weekend. On Sunday night, the Mount Vernon Police Department told The Journal News, Turner said she was feeling ill and was taken to a hospital. Turner, who had a history of high blood pressure, was treated at the hospital and released. At the courthouse Monday, Turner reportedly vomited while awaiting her arraignment in an upstairs holding area. She was then taken back to a cell downstairs. Although courthouse officials are supposed to check on the holding cells every 15 minutes, The Journal News reported, no one saw Turner for another hour, when she was found dead in the cell around 2 p.m. A spokesman for the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office told The Huffington Post that Turner’s initial autopsy was inconclusive. The medical examiner’s office is awaiting results from toxicology tests. Turner was one of five black women to have died in jail during a two-week span in July. Among them was Sandra Bland, whose death in a Waller County, Texas, jail cell drew national attention and touched off demonstrations by the Black Lives Matter movement in Texas and across the country. As special prosecutor, Schneiderman’s investigation will determine whether there should be any criminal charges in Turner’s death. We hope that this investigation is not just a ruse and that they are able to find some real answers into what happened to Raynette. We want justice for all of the women who “died under mysterious circumstances in jail” in recent weeks. Family Photo/Twitter

VA Governor Orders Police Re-Training In The Wake Of Martese Johnson Attack

Virginia To Retrain Police After Brutal Beating Of UVA Student After Martese Johnson was brutally beaten by police outside an area bar with no real reason, the state of Virginia appears to be taking measures to rectify the issue. First a formal investigation was launched into the incident, and now, the governor of Virginia has ordered an emergency re-training of state officers in alcohol enforcement. But can a retraining on policy put a stop to bias-based actions like Martese’s beating? Via RawStory : Virginia’s governor, Terry McAuliffe, has issued an executive order mandating that state alcoholic beverage control enforcement agents be retrained in the wake of the violent arrest of university student Martese Johnson – who is appearing in court on Thursday charged with resisting arrest and public drunkenness. In swift action just a week after the event that occurred outside the University of Virginia (UVA) campus in Charlottesville, McAuliffe signed an executive order on Wednesday that is due to go into effect immediately and requires all such agents to be retrained by 1 September. State alcoholic beverage control (ABC) officers arrested Johnson, 20, close to the UVA grounds after he was turned away from a bar that was only admitting over-21s. Johnson ended up on the ground with blood gushing down his face from a head wound, in a scene that was captured on mobile phone video and went viral, sparking mass protests on campus and prompting the governor to order a state police investigation. In addition to the investigation, which is expected to continue until late May, McAuliffe issued an executive order that ABC enforcement agents must be retrained in the use of force and in matters of cultural diversity and how they interact with young people. Sounds like they’re trying to make a step in the right direction…or at least quiet down all the public outcry over their officers’ racist actions. Do you think this is enough?

President Obama Offers Amnesty To “Established” Illegal Immigrants — “We Aren’t Going To Deport You”

President Obama Declares Plan To Legalize Undocumented Immigrants Despite near-constant Republican push-back on…well, everything…Obama announced an amnesty plan that would allow illegal immigrants with established US roots to get legal standing in this country and avoid deportation . Via MailOnline : President Obama announced a plan Thursday night to mainstream millions of illegal immigrants with an executive order allowing them to stay instead of facing deportation, bringing howls from Republicans who complained about so-called ‘anchor babies’ helping their illegal parents remain in the U.S. The president calmly explained in a 16-minute speech – subtitled in Spanish – the parameters of what angry Republicans are calling a lawless ‘amnesty.’ ‘We’re going to offer the following deal,’ he said: ‘If you’ve been in America for more than five years; if you have children who are American citizens or legal residents; if you register, pass a criminal background check, and you’re willing to pay your fair share of taxes – you’ll be able to apply to stay in this country temporarily, without fear of deportation.’ ‘You can come out of the shadows and get right with the law.’ ‘That’s what this deal is. Now let’s be clear about what it isn’t,’ the president cautioned. ‘This deal does not apply to anyone who has come to this country recently. It does not apply to anyone who might come to America illegally in the future. It does not grant citizenship, or the right to stay here permanently, or offer the same benefits that citizens receive – only Congress can do that.’ ‘All we’re saying is we’re not going to deport you.’ We’re sure this is going to elate just as many (if not more) people as it’s going to piss off.

Tommy Chong on Marijuana: Legalize It!

Tommy Chong wants to legalize marijuana. Knock us over with a feather. The comedian feels that pot hasn’t been legalized is no laughing matter. With the government standing to earn money off it, what’s the holdup? Chong tells The Philadelphia Daily News in an interview: “Look at the situation we’re in now. Sequesters. Cuts. Everything across the board. Now, the government is tapped into the biggest cash crop in the world.” “There’s little manufacturing cost. You don’t have to do anything except watch it grow and get a couple of hippies to cut it and then put it in a bag.” “Hemp itself is going to save the world .” Chong echoed similar sentiments in an interview with IFC, saying the U.S. is missing out on “a ton of money” because marijuana isn’t legal nationwide: “It’s a scam, see. They started the DEA, Nixon started it with an executive order, and they’ve spent some trillions of dollars fighting the weed and then haven’t even made a dent.” “All they did [is spread it], and they affected the whole world. The whole world’s been upset. That’s one of the reasons we have wars,” he went on. “These alcohol-fueled, fear-fueled, oil-based wars. If you let the potheads take over, which we’re doing, we’re the meek that will inherit the world.” That’s one way to look at it. What do you think? Legalize weed?   Yes No Maybe View Poll »
