Kevin Farrell alter-ego Dee picture

“I get more joy out of performing live than any soundstage I ever worked on,” says Kevin Farrell, a Columbus, Ohio, native who attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Farrell created Dee to perform in the 2004 Aid for AIDS Best In Drag Show, and a year later, urged on by a fellow Tupperware salesman (also doing it in drag), was playing to small parties in living rooms across Southern California. Back in college when he was a musical-theater major, Kevin Farrell always figured he#39;d have a

Linkin Park Say New Single ‘The Catalyst’ Is ‘A Risk, But Worth It’

‘We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work,’ says bassist Phoenix Farrell. By James Montgomery Linkin Park Photo: James Minchin Last week, gamers everywhere thrilled to the new trailer for the upcoming “Medal of Honor,” which was directed by Linkin Park ‘s Joseph Hahn and features the band’s brand-new single, “The Catalyst.” And while the trailer no doubt had “MOH” fanatics going crazy, it may have left LP fans feeling a bit confused. Because “The Catalyst” is undoubtedly unlike any song the band has ever released. A moody, synth-heavy, decidedly doomy rumination on the broken times in which we live, it seems to back up the group’s claims that their new album, A Thousand Suns, will be a drastic departure from anything they’ve done in the past. And that, according to LP bassist Dave “Phoenix” Farrell, was precisely the point. “We wanted a track that represented where the album was going to be and how it was going to work, and this was really the track to do that. … It’s a risk, but [it’s] worth it,” he told MTV News earlier this week. “We’ve known [the album is] going to be different, and if fans were expecting Hybrid Theory or Meteora, they’re going to be surprised. It’s going to take people some time to figure it out and know what to do with it.” Farrell wouldn’t go into greater detail about just how the new album, due September 14, will differ from Linkin Park’s previous efforts, but any fan with a pair of ears should be able to tell based on “The Catalyst” alone. The songs are bigger, deeper, decidedly weirder. And while Farrell didn’t exactly back up frontman Chester Bennington’s earlier claims that A Thousand Suns is a full-blown “concept” album, he didn’t really deny them either. “I’ve never liked the title ‘concept record,’ to me that holds up the idea of Tommy or The Wall. And I love those records, but this is not that,” he said. “There are a couple threads that run throughout it, but, for us, the only concept is that it’s not intended to be a collection of individual songs. It’s constructed in a way and thought of in terms of ‘How will it flow?’ I would love … in this day and age, for our fans just once to sit down and listen to it from front to back. We want it to work as an experience.” And to that end, Farrell said the band always wanted to tie “The Catalyst” into a video game of some sort. The way they see it, it only adds another layer to the experience. So when the “Medal of Honor” folks approached them, they leapt at the opportunity. Though, sadly, working with Electronic Arts — the publisher and developer of the “MOH” series — hasn’t improved their gaming skills any. But you can’t really blame LP for that. After all, they’ve been working on A Thousand Suns for a long time now. “I loved the old ‘Medal of Honor’ games, but since we’ve been working on the new album — and really, since I had kids — I’ve kind of hung it up for a while,” Farrell laughed. “It sucks because now I have a younger brother who’s 15 and when we play against each other, it’s not even competitive. It’s ridiculous. And it pisses me off. He’s laughing and sh–. He’s killing me with his knife.” Related Artists Linkin Park

Vampire Weekend’s Contra Cover Girl Sues The Band

Ann Kirsten Kennis claims her signature was forged on the photo release. By James Montgomery Kirsten Kennis featured on Vampire Weekend’s album “Contra” Photo: XL Recordings Well, after months of speculation, we finally know who the wide-eyed WASP-y girl on the cover of Vampire Weekend’s Contra album is — but the guys in VW probably would have preferred if everyone were kept in the dark. That’s because on Wednesday, the blond, Polo-wearing woman on the cover of the album — her name is Ann Kirsten Kennis, btw — filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming the band (or, as they’re referred to in the suit, “Vampire Weekend, Inc”) and photographer Tod Brody used her image without her permission. At the heart of the suit is a photographic release VW obtained from Brody, one Kennis claims contains her forged signature. Kennis — who is suing the band and the photographer for more than $2 million, on the grounds that neither party bothered to verify the legitimacy of the release — also said she took the original photo back in 1983 but had no idea it was featured on the cover of Contra until the band began promoting the album in November. On Thursday (July 15), an officer in the Public Information office of the L.A. Superior Court verified to MTV News that the suit had been filed. A spokesperson for Vampire Weekend’s label, XL Recordings, told MTV News she had no comment about the suit. Contra was released back in January and debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart . Back in October, the band stopped by the MTV Newsroom to talk about the album — and the iconic cover image — but they played things close to the vest: “We haven’t met her, we don’t know her,” bassist Chris Baio laughed. “We’re not being very specific about it. The picture is from 1983, but the last album cover was from 2006, and they kind of look like they both inhabit the same world,” frontman Ezra Koenig added. “When we saw this image, we just found it very striking. And part of it is the look on her face. It’s not about the color of her hair, or the fact that she’s wearing a Polo shirt. What makes it interesting is her face.” What do you think about the lawsuit against Vampire Weekend? Share your thoughts in the comments. Lady Gaga Will Have Giant Stage At Lollapalooza, Perry Farrell Promises

‘We spent close to $150,000 to house the production she’s gonna do,’ says festival organizer and Jane’s Addiction frontman. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Lady Gaga Photo: Marco Prosch/ Getty Images Lady Gaga is set to storm the Lollapalooza stage this August. It’ll be the pop princess’s first appearance at the festival in three years, and this time around Gaga is upping the performance ante. She wants everyone to know that she’s graduated from side-stage performer to accomplished headlining act. Back in 2007, when she first appeared at the festival on the side stage, her getups were so elaborate that she even bested more well-known acts like festival founder and Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell. “I actually said, ‘Who’s the chick with all the clothes, because this is my festival and she’s got [a lot of clothes racks]. We’ve got one rack,’ ” Farrell told MTV News at the Activision E3 party in Los Angeles. “I gotta follow this chick and see what’s going on.” Despite the clothes envy, Gaga managed to win Farrell over. “But she had this sweet smile,” he recalled. “And she was real mischievous, so I liked her.” Now, Gaga is more elaborate than ever, having requested a very expensive stage setup for her set. “Yeah, she asked for a giant stage,” Farrell explained. “So we spent like $100,000 to give her a giant stage. We spent close to $150,000 to house the production she’s gonna do. And I say yeah, let’s do it.” Gaga will be joined by fellow headliners including Green Day, the recently reunited Soundgarden, the re-formed Strokes, the Arcade Fire and Phoenix when the festival kicks off on August 6 in Chicago’s Grant Park. What do you think Gaga will do for her return to the Lollapalooza stage? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Lady Gaga

Miss California Bikini Contest

There really isn’t much in this world that I like more than a good old fashion bikini contest, so here are some pictures from the Miss California 2010 Pageant preliminaries. Fashion shows are pretty damn boring so as far as bikini contests go this isn’t exactly titillating, I mean there aren’t even any thongs or pools of jell-o or water pistols filled with baby oil
