He was the Chicago Bulls’ No. 1 draft pick in 1999 and over the course of his career suited up for teams that included the LA Clippers, the Dallas Mavericks, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Philadelphia 76ers. Brand is excited about leading his former team and hopes to transform the Sixers into a leading contender in the Eastern Conference through his guidance. “The 76ers are on the cusp of something very special and the next 12 months are really important. I think that’s why I was the leading candidate, to bring stability to the organization and this group that I know really well,” he said in a statement. The Sixers are excited about bringing Brand to the front office. Josh Harris , owner of the Sixers, says that Brand will be influential in bringing in new talent. “I think we’re at a new point in our team’s development into hopefully an NBA championship,” he said. “We need to be attracting talent here. Certainly, Elton’s image and who he is as a person were real positives. But leadership and managerial skills and the things you’ve got to do in the front office that aren’t just about image, he’s got those, too. But certainly, that was a huge positive.” According to Black Enterprise , Brand’s appointment comes shortly after Maurice A. Stinnett made history as the first Black man to become a diversity and inclusion vice president for an NBA team. T ech giant Google is expanding its efforts to increase racial representation within the realm of tech. After launching a pilot program for Howard University students, the company has announced the creation of a new initiative called Tech Exchange, Ed Surge reported. In addition to empowering students and providing them with first-hand experience in Silicon Valley, Google launched the Tech Exchange with hopes of boosting its own diversity numbers in the long-run. https://t.co/Am7QrjUYvy #highered #edequity — EdSurge HigherEd (@HigherEdSurge) September 21, 2018 As part of the program 65 students from HBCUs and Hispanic institutions will head to Silicon Valley to enhance their computer science skills, the news outlet writes. Tech Surge is an expansion of Howard West; a program designed to send Howard University students to Google’s headquarters on the West Coast for hands-on experience in the tech industry. After witnessing the impact that the program made in the lives of the students who participated, Google wanted to offer the opportunity to students at other HBCUs. Amongst the institutions participating in the tech exchange program are Morgan State University, Florida A&M University, Dillard University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and others. April Alvarez, Educational Equities Program Manager, Google, believes that the Tech Exchange initiative will be an integral part of increasing diversity within the corporation as well as within the tech industry as a whole. “We’re not as diverse as we’d like to be. We’re focused on building a more diverse Google, one that definitely reflects our users. This Tech Exchange is a piece of that puzzle,” Alvarez told Ed Surge. “These students — we hope they’ll come back and work for a place like Google or start their own Google. They’re going to be leaders in the industry.” Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick says that it’s important for companies to hire individuals who reflect their consumer base. “You want diversity of thought in every discussion, and you need to do that by hiring people with the diversity of background in every experience,” he said. According to Google’s 2018 diversity report, only 2.5 percent of employees are Black. HBO has announced that it has picked up Game of Thrones for a seventh season. In related news: the sky is blue, the Pope is Catholic and Prince was an amazing musical talent. The network made this pretty obvious confirmation just days before Game of Thrones Season 6 premieres on Sunday night at 9 p.m. There had never been any doubt that the series would be renewed for a seventh or an eighth season, with showrunner David Benioff recently telling Variety that there may only be “13 episodes” remaining after Season 6 is complete. “We’re heading into the final lap,” Benioff said, acknowledging that the final two seasons may be broken up into six and seven episodes, respectively. HBO did not mention in this announcement just how many installment will comprise Season 7, which will kick off in the spring of 2017. The cable network also announced that Veep and Silicon Valley, both of which premiere this Sunday, have been renewed for next year. As for what fans can expect on Season 6? As usual, everyone involved with the epic drama has remained as tight-lipped as possible regarding upcoming storylines. Moreover, the show has actually now outpaced George R.R. Martin, whose latest novel will NOT be complete by the time new episodes air. So even loyal book fans are in the dark regarding what’s on tap. This much we know, however: Jon Snow is dead… … until he gets brought back to life, that is. Trust us. This is 1,000% happening.
Lil Wayne and Jeff Goldblum will star in a commercial set to air during Super Bowl 50 that people are not reacting to in the same way as they are reacting to Amy Schumer and Seth Rogen promoting Bud Ligh t. Viewers are finding the latter ad to be funny. But some are finding the latter to be racist. A commercial for Apartments.com, the footage is set to The Jeffersons' famous theme song, “Movin on Up.” It features Goldblum as a “Silicon Valley Maverick” who is sitting on top of a grand piano as he rises higher and higher along the skyline, making his way to a deluxe apartment. Once he reached the top of the building, Goldblum comes across George Washington and Lil Wayne, the latter of whom tells Goldblum's character he's “flame-broilin' some burgers” for the big game. No big deal, right? Weird, but maybe sort of funny? Not according to those who have labeled it as “low-key racist,” per TMZ, because it implies that Lil Wayne is George Washington's slave. A source close to the rapper, however, tells the site that the commercial is “meant to be funny and not the least bit offensive.” In short, “people need to calm down,” this insider adds. Watch it below for yourself and then compare it to other Super Bowl 50 commercials :
YO! This guy makes us so proud. Tristan Walker Talks About His Startup Walker And Co, Hiring Diverse Talent And Creating Products For Minorities It’s no secret that Silicon Valley is a very white/male dominated environment , but we wanted to make sure you know about Tristan Walker, he’s one of the rising stars to come out of the tech industry and last year he launched his startup Walker and Company, which is introducing a very unique line of personal care products designed for the severely underserved African-American and minority consumer market.
