#NYFWNOIR: Maki Oh Continues To Define Afromodernism To The West

Source: Danielle James / Hello Beautiful On Monday evening in Union Square, Maki Oh founder and designer, Amaka Osakwe presented her collection to a crowd full of editors, fans, and supporters. The show was a pan-African experience with guests represented from all over the world. I had the pleasure of going backstage before the show and it was a very hectic, sometimes tense, yet overall organized feel. The presentation itself was a beautiful illustration of Afromodern fashion. Source: Yuchen Liao / Getty The Lagos born designer continues to show that African designs are more than Dutch wax and animal print. The models varied in height, sizes, and age, illustrating that the clothes are created for a wide range of women (and men). who want thoughtful style. I loved the gender fluidity that wasn’t purposefully called out, but rather, just represented naturally. Source: Yuchen Liao / Getty I swooned over the pearl embellishments decorating a khaki colored blazer as well as on the hem of a black dress to update your LBD style. Source: Yuchen Liao / Getty Maki uses traditional West African techniques with modern silhouettes to create a head turning collection. Source: Danielle James / Hello Beautiful It’s been awhile since I’ve been to a show where every model loved their hair. Maki Oh utilized fabrics from her latest collection to intertwine them into one long braided ponytail for a statement look. Unlike her counterpart, Christian Siriano , this was truly a way to pay tribute to the culture and Black women who started the trend. The collection felt like a perfect fusion of West African fashion meeting European silhouettes and trends. On the cusp of the 10 year anniversary of Maki Oh, this collection was strong, relatable, and most importantly sellable. As fashion continues to evolve and consumers want more of a global feel, Maki Oh is providing prints and looks that won’t go out of fashion for years to come. Keep clicking to check out some of our top looks from the show.

Lara Stone Big Tits Out for Fashion of the Day

Lara Stone is old as ashit, assuming that shit is old, I always do because it has some bloody petrified look to it, that I assume means it’s been baking inside of me for at least a month…not that I want to be talking about my digestive issues due to what I assume is Hep….but wn I call a bitch old as shit, I ask myself “Is shit that old”…maybe I should use another example, maybe she is old as J.LO, or Old as that Grandmother I saw pissing on the side of the road outside the Salvation Army store cuz she clearly can’t afford diapers…which makes me wonder if Lara Stone is that old? Has she lost her ability to control her bladder? I feel like we’ve seen her nips for 20 maybe 30 years…back when tits for fashion was a thing reserved for busty models, before the whole modeling world got overtaken by the DO it Yourselfers… I guess none of this matters, other than my one Lara Stone story that involved her legal team aggressively coming after me about her Honeymoon pics back when she married some COMEDIAN…it was years ago, and even then she was old….and the pics were tame bikini pics…and this was years after we had seen her tits, her bare tits all the time, on the fucking regular, it’s why she got work….So I thought to myself…what a fucking cunt, coming after people like me, who are doing her a favor posting her…all to try to keep her honeymoon that clearly the paparazzi attended a fucking secret… when all I was doing was saying – here’s some recently married tit you’ve seen in a bikini….just a shitty attitude from clearly a shitty human…but the tits man….they’ve kept her afloat and here she is now… JOIN THE NEWSLETTER YOU ASSHOLES! Christian Siriano Made A ‘Bo Derek’ Mistake When Discussing Hair Inspo For His NYFW Show

Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Let me start by saying Christian Siriano is an ally for the culture. He’s always leaned into dressing Black Hollywood, whether it was coming to the rescue of Leslie Jones who couldn’t find a designer to dress her on the red carpet, or stylishly shaping the curves (and even placing her on the runway) of Danielle Brooks . At the Orange Is The New Black season finale, many of the women were wearing designs by Siriano. While we praise diversity in fashion , we still have a long way to go. It shouldn’t be a headline that a designer is dressing a curvy or tall Black woman. However, his efforts, have helped to push diversity in the industry and call out designers who are still designing for the same, monolithic customer. Nevertheless, even allies can make mistakes. Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty Siriano partnered with TRESemmé for hair looks for his NYFW Spring/Summer 2020 show and while they only brought the product, he brought the inspiration. According to WWD , Sirano showed hairstylists a photo of Gigi Hadid in a braided style and dubbed the look the “Gigi Braid.” And while yes, Hadid may have worn this exact hairstyle, when I think of braids, I do not think of white women. There is nothing wrong with Gigi Hadid wearing a braided hairstyle; however, there is a huge problem in the industry (and media) with Blackness only being desired or adored when placed on white bodies. Braids have a long history going back to Africa. Specific braided styles represented class and even occasions while some braided styles were actually maps to freedom during the slave trade . Source: Victor VIRGILE / Getty By simply dubbing one braided ponytail, which Black women have been wearing since they were kids as the “Gigi Braid” is erasure of a community of people. An erasure of history. Erasure is a form of racism that has been embedded in American culture when it comes to Black people. To not even acknowledge the history of something is to say it doesn’t exist. He could have still called it the ‘Gigi Braid’; however, it should have had some historical context. With a platform as large as his, simply adding that braids are historically from Black culture and natural hairstyles have seen a resurgence on the runway and red carpet, would have educated a mass of people who probably aren’t looking for this information on their own. We’ve already been through this with Bo Derek and her braids. “Bo Derek Braids” are not a thing. Bo Derek is a woman who wore braids, but she did not start or create the braided style. The ‘Bo Derek Braids’ nomenclature occurred after the 1979 movie ‘ 10 ‘. If it seems like one is nit picking, fast forward to almost 40 years later to Kim Kardashian (who whether we like it or not, influences culture), called her braids ‘Bo Derek Braids.’ Mis-education is also a form of erasure. With the CFDA placing diversity as a major importance, it’s imperative to know that it goes beyond throwing more Black models on the runway . Fashion is fantasy so inspiration will be taken from a multitude of places; it’s important to correctly site where said inspiration is derived. MODEL MONDAY: Tiffany’s Flame Wants To Shine A Light On All Bodies

Commissioned by Ashley Stewart “Is your teacher famous like my teacher?” The question, posed by a particularly precarious elementary school student referred to Tiffany Flamer, an educator who outside of a few low stakes beauty shoots had overnight become the face of a national advertising campaign. Named Ms. Ashley Stewart in the brand’s annual Finding Ashley Stewart pageant Flammer has had her face plastered in store windows, magazines ads, and headline stories all over the internet but she appreciates its presence the most in her classroom. In an exclusive interview, the unlikely model talked to HelloBeautiful about her plans to expand her modeling career beyond her tenure and inspire others to be confident in the process. She went on to reveal that her lack of success in that competition alst prevented her from taking home her crown. “I didn’t make that, and I knew it was gonna be the same people that were judging that so I was like ‘They didn’t pick me before, why would they pick me now?” Commissioned by Ashley Stewart The deciding factor in her putting herself out there again was encouragement from her local store manager. An avid shopper with a reputation for having great personal style Flamer had become close with the person who often watch her twirl around the chain’s pink clad dressing rooms. “She said, ‘I think you should do it, just do it. Just give it a chance,” said Flamer. A few days later, right before the year of her school year the teacher who describes herself as being “active in her community” decided to dedicate part of her break to giving it a shot. I can wear that, because I look like that,” she said. She added that she wanted them to think, “That will look bomb on me.” Even with a huge campaign under her belt, a growing social media following and a clip of Loni Love yelping out her name on the internet, she has not been able to lock down a modeling agent, a task that is seemingly simpler for the young women in the shallower end of the plus-size pool. “I notice that a lot of the agencies who represent plus size models the models are on the smaller end,” she pointed out. “In the media they consider anything a size 10 and up, but their models are usually on the smaller end. They’re size 10 and size 12 they’re not your 14s and 16s and 18s,” she continued. “I definitely want to continue modeling, I am looking to sign and I’m hoping that will be a possibility for me, hopefully they can take me as I am.” If they don’t, we will. In between talking about her upcoming 11th season of her show, she told Sunni Hostin that it’s absolutely true that she’s splitting from Kevin, not “because of his infidelity,” but because he fathered a child outside their marriage. “Infidelity is one thing,” said Auntie Wendy. “A full baby is a whole other topic. A baby. I’m not changing Pampers. I want to be pampered. Get out of here.” Despite her words, Wendy made sure to emphasize that she doesn’t think her ex “Big Kev” is a bad guy and she’s sticking to her promise not to [overly] bash him in the media. “Kevin’s not a bad man. Big Kev. He’s not a bad man. You can’t just throw away 25 years and start talking recklessly about the other person — otherwise, what does that say about you? You know? Black Journalists’ Convention Increases Security After Racially Motivated Mass Shootings

Read more from the original source:

A VENTURA, Florida –There were some early morning jitters at the annual gathering for Black journalists in suburban Miami on Wednesday morning after a fire alarm briefly disrupted the event’s first day of panels and workshops. But the nerves of those attending the National Association of Black Journalists ( NABJ ) Convention here were quickly quelled when an evacuation was halted after it was announced that the alarm sounded because of some burnt toast. Amid heightened worries surrounding gun violence from suspected white supremacists targeting minorities, the nation’s largest organization for journalists of color kicked off this year’s gathering as the nation was mourning the nearly two dozen deaths from this past weekend’s pair of apparently racially motivated mass shootings . It was because of that, NABJ Executive Director Drew Berry said — and probably because of the racist rhetoric and attacks on the media by Donald Trump — that there were extra security measures put in place for the organization’s signature event. On Sunday, Berry sent a blast email to its members expressing his condolences to the victims of the shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, which took place this past Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Berry emphasized that convention security would be ramped up, a message that had not been sent to attendees in past years. “We met with local police departments and hotel security staff two days ago regarding our convention security needs including concerns fueled by the racial climate and recent mass shootings,” Berry wrote in part. “The security team is putting together substantial plans that include both visible and covert security details.” Multiple requests for comment from Berry, NABJ President Sarah Glover and other officials within the nonprofit organization were not returned. The convention began on the same day USA Today’s headquarters in Virginia was evacuated because of a report about an armed person that ultimately didn’t yield “evidence of any acts of violence.” It was just another example of journalists being on alert in a culture of mass shootings. Among a host of planned events over the span of five days, NABJ was planning a presidential candidates forum that was set to include New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker , South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg , Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld . The preemptive move by NABJ seemed to make complete sense after at least 20 people were killed Saturday in El Paso by Patrick Crusius , who said in a racist manifesto that he was against “race mixing.” Less than 24 hours later, Connor Betts opened fired in the Oregon District in Dayton early Sunday morning, killing nine people, six of whom were Black. Though authorities did not immediately confirm a motive, social media users theorized that Betts was upset with his sister, whom he also killed, for dating a Black man. Those shootings came about a week after Santino William Legan killed multiple people attending the Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California. Legan left behind social media posts that showed he may have been a white supremacist or at least sympathized with the racist movement. The president’s open disdain for many Black people, especially journalists, was also another likely reason for NABJ’s precautions. Trump has used dangerously racist rhetoric that’s helped to embolden white supremacist extremists to target prominent Black people and especially journalists. The president during last week’s Democratic debates turned his attention to Don Lemon , who the president has repeatedly called “the dumbest man on television.” Those insults toward Lemon may seem harmless, but another journalist proved Trump’s attacks on the media can create danger. Just last year, legendary journalist April Ryan , the 2017 NABJ Journalist of the Year, revealed that she was receiving death threats because of her coverage of the White House. Despite the current events and racial climate in the country, one attendee said he wasn’t worried and that he believed NABJ officials would do their best to keep safe a segment of the community that perhaps would not have otherwise felt protected. “With three mass shootings taking place over the span of a week, I’m a little on edge,” Victor Williams, a Cleveland television reporter, told NewsOne on Monday. “I don’t realistically see this problem going away anytime soon [and] unless something is done, it’s possible this could be a concern at all future conventions, [but] I’m confident in the planners of NABJ are taking extra measures to keep us safe.” SEE ALSO: Father Of Black Woman Who Survived El Paso Shooting Slams Trump: ‘Do Not Come To This City’ Ben Carson Suddenly Decides Not To Go To Ohio To Lie About Housing After Dayton Shooting [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3883613″ overlay=”true”]
