Super Bowl Movie Trailers: The Night’s Biggest Winners

Paramount offered up the most movie spots of the night, including trailers for ‘Captain America,’ ‘Super 8’ and ‘Transformers.’ By Eric Ditzian A scene from the “Captain America: The First Avenger” Super Bowl trailer Photo: Paramount So Christina Aguilera blew it with her flubbed Super Bowl national anthem and Ben Roethlisberger blew it with his faltered fourth-quarter comeback drive. But what we’re really talking about the next morning has nothing to do with Fox’s in-game Super Bowl coverage. Instead, we’re fixated on the barrage of movie trailers and Hollywood-themed ads we checked out during commercial time — extended looks at “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Super 8,” “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” and others. While the Green Bay Packers enjoy their Super Bowl win, let’s go ahead and anoint the night’s big Hollywood winners J.J. Abrams Perhaps the night’s biggest winner was Abrams, the director of “Super 8” and — according to the none-too-subtle subtext of the new trailer — the inheritor of Steven Spielberg’s genre-bending, family-focused Hollywood blockbuster crown. Together, Spielberg and Abrams seem to be positioning the film as the successor to “E.T.” Whether that’s what “Super 8” turns about to be remains an open question. For now, what we can say is that Abrams has come a long way since “Star Trek” and “Lost” recently. He’s officially a top dog in Hollywood. “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” We need not rehash the hand-wringing over the letdown that was 2009’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” but Michael Bay’s latest ad for his third alien-robot flick, “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” goes a long way toward reassuring fans that the new installment will be the best of the bunch. How bold to deliver a Super Bowl movie trailer containing not a single line of dialogue? Instead we got balletic and beautiful fight scenes, an ominous air horn-driven soundtrack and the tagline “Earth goes dark.” We can’t wait! “Captain America: The First Avenger” Fans really haven’t known what to think of this Marvel adaptation. Some peeks at Chris Evans in costume as the Captain have left observers underwhelmed, and many remain skeptical about the prospect of Joe Johnston (“The Wolfman,” “Jurassic Park III”) in the director’s chair. Yet this trailer — the first-ever look at footage from “Captain America: The First Avenger” — should help quell any alarm: There’s a cool look at Evans’ transformation from frail wannabe to badass super-soldier, some satisfying fights, and a well-executed period-drama look to the whole thing. Volkswagen We’re not sure if it made us want to go out and buy a Passat, but this ad was one of the funniest of the night. A young boy, dressed up like Darth Vader, attempts to use the Force on everything from a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to a washing machine, only to train his faux-powers on dad’s parked car. And guess what? The car starts and the boy is shocked. Turns out, Dad started the car remotely, via the Passat’s high-tech set of keys. Will parents raised on “Star Wars” rush over to the local Volkswagen dealership seeking the sense of familial togetherness apparent in the commercial? Who knows? But at least we’re talking about these cars, which is not the case with so many of the products advertised during the big game. Paramount Pictures Some studios, like Warner Bros., largely sat out the Super Bowl. No studio, however, went as all in as Paramount, which delivered looks at “Captain America,” “Super 8,” “Thor,” “Transformers” and “Rango.” The studio’s ads were among the most talked-about of the night and trended highly on Twitter and Google. Sometimes, it pays to go big. Related Videos Kick Off With Super Bowl XLV Movie Commercials

Scarlett Johannson and Ryan Reynolds’ Post Break-Up Dinner Meant to Keep Things Friendly

(Pacific Coast News) In the three years Scarlett Johannson spent married to Ryan Reynolds the two rarely appeared together in public and never went arm-in-arm down the red carpet like, say these two hams . But that didn't stop them from going out for a rare public dinner Tuesday night following the couple's recent separation. One of the few pictures of Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds together. (Photo Agency) Scarlett and Ryan showed up together at New York's Blue Ribbon restaurant over the weekend, sparking rumors of a reunion, but according to Pop Eater it was more like an orchestrated move to show that they're going to keep things civil through this whole divorce thing. “They are not getting back together,” an unnamed source told Pop Eater . “Rather, this was her way to show the world that you can be friends with your ex and that just because you are getting divorced doesn't mean you can't still be civilized towards each other.” It sounds like the dinner was meant to curtail any mean-spirited rumor mongering about the couple, like recent whisperings that Scarlett was outright mean to Ryan. “This was 100 percent Scarlett sending a message,” says the source. “She knew the two of them would be noticed in the tiny restaurant and wanted to make sure that they were seen to be having a good time together not fighting.” Scarlett Johansson Pictures

Stanley Tucci Says ‘Captain America’ ‘Design Is Stunning’

The actor says the film is shot beautifully. By Mawuse Ziegbe Stanley Tucci Photo: MTV News Marvel hero Captain America is known his unstoppable brawn so it’s a safe bet that moviegoers will check out a feast of out-of-this-world action scenes when “Captain America: The First Avenger” lands in theaters next summer. In addition to heart-stopping thrills, , who spent some of this summer filming the 2011 release, said that fans are in for a visually creative experience. “[Director] Joe Johnston is a wonderful guy and I love the way he’s shooting it, it’s really interesting, it’s beautiful-looking,” Tucci told MTV News. The actor seemed awed by Johnston’s approach. “There’s a real power to it and the design is stunning.” Tucci will portray Dr. Abraham Erskine, the lab wiz who develops the potent serum that endows Steve Rogers with super-human strength and effectively turns the weakling into Captain America. The Oscar-nominated star dished about the nuances of his character who, despite having developed the muscle-popping serum, is not just a crazed genius tinkering with chemicals. Tucci revealed that “he’s a combination of both” mad scientist and mild-mannered researcher. Tucci, who will be seen next in the high-school comedy “Easy A,” heads back to shooting “Captain America” in the fall. So far, the actor, who is known for diverse roles ranging from Julia Child’s doting husband in “Julie & Julia” to a mega-fierce fashion insider in “The Devil Wears Prada,” is relishing his time on the “Captain America” set. “So much fun,” Tucci gushed about filming. “I have to go back and … finish it in October but I was there for a few weeks in … end of July, August. It was great, a great experience.” The star chalked up his good times behind the scenes to his co-stars. “Chris [Evans, who plays Captain America] is great, he’s a wonderful guy,” Tucci said. “Dominic [Cooper] and Hayley [Atwell] and Tommy Lee Jones – it’s great people.” What are you looking forward to seeing in “Captain America: The First Avenger?” Let us know in the comments below! Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Clip Successfully Delivers Message, Fans Say

‘You see the bruise near her eye and it’s shocking. Shows how ugly the relationship really is,’ says MTV News commenter down.to.fly. By James Dinh Eminem (file) Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage While fans are applauding Kanye West’s innovative clip for “Power,” others are buzzing about the serious domestic violence undertones displayed in Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” video . The Joseph Kahn-directed clip portrays the downward spiral of an abusive couple, played by Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan, as they appear to be just as much lovers as they are fighters. Reactions to the video have been strong, with many fans noting the clip’s cinematic vibe. “It was a good mini movie,” MTV News reader down.to.fly wrote. “In the end Megan’s sitting there and she looks so perfect but then you see the bruise near her eye and it’s shocking. Shows how ugly the relationship really is. Well directed,” down.to.fly continued. Another commenter was left speechless after watching the clip as he revealed it touched home in more ways than one. “This video is hot, awesome, I can’t explain it. WOW!” Queli wrote. “What a good performance, what a great message. Eminem if u see this, man I know what it is to be in a relationship like this one, I am glad I got out, hope you are as well. God bless you and Rihanna, keep on going man, you are being heard.” Emotions got the best of Mark Anthony Sanchez as he shed a few tears while watching the video. “Awesome…I keep watchin’ this over and over…I cried I ain’t gonna lie…this is his best video and for sure the best of the year….Eminem, Rihanna, Megan, Dominic, perfect,” he said. Twitter users shared their 140 characters on the clip, even making Eminem a worldwide trending topic in the process. @jhamirah was able to describe the clip in no fewer than four words, saying, “Wow. Intense. Uncomfortable. AMAZING!” @Bella31102 thought that the clip was like no other. “The most powerful music video I have ever seen!” she tweeted. Kahn’s portrayal of the couple’s abuse is not held back in the video, and that realism didn’t sit well with everyone. “I have some issues with Eminem and Rihanna’s new video. It should come with a warning for starts. I might write a blog about it. #fb,” tweeted @sapphictraffic . How do you think the issue of domestic violence was handled in Eminem’s video? ‘Captain America’ Director’s ‘Entire Career’ Got Him Job, Marvel Boss Says

Joe Johnston’s groundbreaking design work on ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ helped land him ‘Captain’ chair, Kevin Feige says. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Captain America Photo: Marvel Comics Summer 2011 is going to be a big one for comic book movies — specifically because of two features from Marvel Studios: “Captain America” and “Thor.” And while there’s still almost a full year to go until those films are released, ever since the casts of the two flicks made appearances at San Diego Comic-Con last month, the Internets have been buzzing with anticipation for the star-spangled hero and the God of Thunder. When Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige stopped by our live stream during the Con, we peppered him with questions about all of their upcoming projects, including how they decided on putting Joe Johnston and Kenneth Branagh in the director’s chairs . With Branagh, who’ll helm “Thor,” Feige said, in a nutshell, he “chased it.” In Johnston’s case, however, the reasons had more to do with Johnston’s already well-established filmmaking cred. “I think Joe’s entire career has been leading up to this,” Feige told MTV News. “When you look at the design work he did on the original ‘Star Wars,’ I saw a bunch of people dressed as Boba Fett already lined-up for his signing,” Feige recalled fondly. “The work he did with [Steven] Spielberg on Raiders [of the Lost Ark], the two films he directed, of course ‘The Rocketeer.’ I think his whole career has been leading up to this movie.” Johnston is certainly no stranger to genre/fantasy filmmaking. In addition to having served as art director on some of the most visually intense and celebrated movies of all time — the first two original “Star Wars” films and the aforementioned “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — he also directed “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” “Hidalgo” and “The Wolfman.” As for Johnston’s take on “Captain America,” his star, Chris Evans , told us that the film will be highly stylized, but not too “glossy” and not too dark. “I definitely asked Joe, what kind of gloss are we going for here? Is this going to have the kind of ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Fantastic Four’ shine?” Evans recalled. “He said it’s not going to be that glossy, not that colorful, but we’re not going as dark as something like ‘Batman.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” . Captain America: Chris Evans Confirmed & Bucky Has Been Cast

We’ve gotten some major Captain America news in the past 24 hours. While we may have already learned last week that actor Chris Evans had landed the prestigious title role in The First Avenger: Captain America , it was still sort of classified merely as a “strong rumor.” That status has now been upgraded to iron-clad fact, as Marvel has issued a press release today, which finally confirms his casting. However, that’s not even the big news. Marvel is also confirming the truth of a rumor reported late yesterday by Deadline , that Gossip Girl and Hot Tub Time Machine star, Sebastian Stan has been cast to play Cap’s legendary young sidekick, Bucky . Just a few days ago, the mere existence of Bucky in the film was still something that was up in the air. Now, we not only know he’s in it, but who will play him. Introduced in the 1941 debut issue, Cap’s young sidekick Bucky Barnes was always seen as a sort of “poor man’s Robin.” And much like Jason Todd, the second version of Robin, Bucky’s death was one of those moments in comics legendary for not only its harshness, but for Marvel’s faithfulness to the idea of keeping him dead. As the old saying went, O.B.S.D. (Only Bucky Stays Dead.) However, that venerable saying was squashed when he was revived in the comics as Winter Soldier in 2005. He would even eventually replace Steve Rogers as Captain America when he was famously killed at the climax of Civil War . How will the character of Bucky be handled in the upcoming Avengers prequel? The casting of Sebastian Stan for this character is rather interesting, and may lift the veil a bit, regarding the film’s character dynamics. Stan, at 26, is only about a year-and-a-half younger than Cap’s Chris Evans. If I were to speculate, based on what we now know, it seems that the two will likely begin the film as best-friends, when the opportunity to enter the Super Soldier program goes to Steve and possibly divides their friendship briefly. After Cap becomes infused with his new powers and abilities, he’ll probably enjoys his initial victories, but soon realizes that he still needs his old buddy at his side. So, it looks like we will see more of a situation of the two of them being friends and equals, rather than Bucky being Cap’s 15 year-old “young ward” type who was recruited to help rally youth to enlist in the military and fight the Nazis. In fact, just looking at Stan, it almost seems surprising that he wasn’t up for the role of Cap himself, based on the guys who were once in consideration . (One of which included Stan’s Gossip Girl co-star, Chace Crawford.) What do you think about the choice of Sebastian Stan as Bucky? Does it work? Should they have gone younger/older?
