WATCH: ‘Snitch’ Director Ric Roman Waugh Loves The Idea Of ‘The Rock’ In A Real-World Drama

Ric Roman Waugh says his career as a Hollywood stuntman played a “huge” role in his transition to writer-director. “It gave me a sense of the narrative process,” says the Snitch filmmaker. “I could come into a piece of material and then put my stamp on it narratively, but also construct it in a way that I know,  production-wise, [will] make it completely organic and real. Waugh sat down with me for a one-on-one interview where he talked about Snitch, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson , and about what it takes to become a director in Hollywood. For those who doubt Johnson has the chops to handle a dramatic role, Waugh says the former WWE wrestler turned out to be ideal for the role of a father who becomes an undercover informant in a drug cartel in order to spare his son a 10-year prison sentence. “When we started casting the movie, and all the usual suspects’ names came up…you know, I was like ‘boring!  I’ve seen that before.’  I’ll tell you what, why don’t we just show how dangerous this world is? Why don’t we take the most formidable guy on the planet — Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson — and…show you when it’s real world rules, it won’t matter how big you are,” Waugh explained, adding: “When a bullet hits you in the head you die just as fast as the guy that’s 5’6.” Check out the interview in its entirety below:  Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . WATCH: Bruce Willis Watches His Fans Yell Hard At ‘A Good Day To Die Hard’ Premiere

The day before A Good Day to Die Hard hit theaters, fans in New York City sat through a marathon screening of the first four films at the AMC Empire 25 — and were rewarded with a visit from John McClane himself, Bruce Willis, before seeing the new film. Jai Courtney, who plays McClane’s grown-up son in the film, was also in attendance, and both actors agreed their characters share a common trait: stubbornness.  “Just like most guys,” said Willis, “he thinks he knows everything and…doesn’t.” I also asked Courtney if the stunts in Die Hard films, or at least this one, are as old school as they look.  “We blew things up. For real.” Courtney bragged.  “There’s over a hundred cars being crashed, for real.” Check out my full red carpet interview below, and watch more than one hundred fans blowing out their lungs as they scream for the return of this 25-year-old franchise: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . WATCH: ‘Side Effects’ Star Rooney Mara Says Steven Soderbergh Was Just What The Doctor Ordered For Her Career

Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones were all on the red carpet for the premiere of Side Effects in New York City, and I asked them what it was like making a modern Hitchcock film. “It pleases me to hear you say ‘modern Hitchcock film’ because that was our hope, to do something like that” said Hollywood mega-producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.  “It’s a tradition that’s been ignored a lot in the last decade.” Rooney Mara plays Emily Taylor, a young woman whose world unravels when the anti-anxiety drug she is prescribed has some unexpected side effects, and the actress told me that signing on for the psychological thriller was an easy decision thanks to Steven Soderbergh’s involvement.  “A director is the most important thing” Mara noted about choosing a project. What side effects can audiences expect after seeing the movie?  Screenwriter Scott Z Burns hopes “the desire to see it two or three times” is one of them.  That’s right,   Side Effects is meant to be addictive. WATCH: Sylvester Stallone Shows Some Gray Matter At ‘Bullet to the Head’ Premiere

Sylvester Stallone doesn’t just use his cranium for a battering ram.  On the red carpet at Tuesday’s premiere of Bullet to the Head , the enduring action star — who wrote his ticket to stardom in 1976 with Rocky — told me that he does keep moviegoers in mind when he approaches a project. “The one thing you have to do is try to be creative with the audience but not be so self-serving,” Stallone explained. “In other words, [don’t] get too goofy too far out there.  Y’know, you try to give them what they want but give them a little twist on it.” Bullet to the Head co-star Sung Kang told me he’s happy that Stallone, and Hollywood, are willing to try new things.  I asked him what it was like as an Asian actor to forge a career and Kang said “I think the world’s changing.  It’s becoming more global, and giving opportunities to actors like me…I think it’s baby steps, but it’s getting better.” Jason Momoa from HBO’s  Game of Thrones is also in the flick but he and Stallone don’t merely have a fist fight – they have an  ax  fight!   Did Stallone have any tips for the up and coming action star?  “Yeah,” says Momoa, “‘don’t hit me’!” Check out my full red carpet interview below: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . WATCH: At ‘Hobbit’ Premiere, Robinov Says Warner Bros. Is Taking Wait-And-See Approach To 48 FPS

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey  held its THIRD global premiere on Thursday — this time stateside at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York. I was on the red carpet, and in light of the debate over Peter Jackson’s decision to shoot the movie at a high 48 frames per second , I asked Warner Bros. Pictures President Jeff Robinov if the studio was getting behind the groundbreaking but controversial technique. Robinov told me that while Jackson’s enthusiasm was contagious, the studio will see how its limited release of the high-frame-rate cut does in theaters before making any major commitments. I also got the chance to ask Andy Serkis what he feels it will take for Hollywood to seriously consider motion capture performance as acting. Also on the red carpet were the actors who play dwarves in The Hobbit .  I couldn’t help asking if they could take on their Disney counterparts, and let’s just say they’ve been strategizing about how to take their rivals down. WATCH: Paranormal Activity 4 Directors WANT You To Talk During The Movie

Paranormal Activity 4 directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman say that the ideal horror movie is like a party at the theater, and the one movie where you want the audience to talk back. That shared communal excitement is indeed one of the highlights of the Paranormal Activity experience, though Hitchcock and Co. might violently disagree . At last night’s NYC screening Joost and Schulman (who also directed Paranormal Activity 3 and the controversial documentary Catfish ) talked about the changes they’ve made to update the Paranormal Activity franchise — including the addition of Xbox Kinect-vision — and what it’s like to make their name in the horror genre. Paranormal Activity 4 is out this Friday; read more here ! Follow Movieline on  Twitter .  Follow Grace on  Twitter .

Gangster Squad Gets Back In The Game With New Trailer

The Sean Penn , Ryan Gosling , Josh Brolin starrer was initially set for an early September release, but the tragedy in Aurora, CO at a The Dark Knight Rises showing at a multiplex threw the title into a tailspin. The Ruben-Fleischer-directed film about the L.A. police department’s war against organized crime in the ’40s and ’50s. Gangster Squad is now set for a January release. The original trailer, which played some TDKR showings, depicted a scene in which mobsters open fire at a crowd of moviegoers. The scene was reportedly pivotal to the feature’s plot and producers delayed the pic to re-work film and eliminate the possibility of touching a raw nerve. The trailer opens within explosion and a few shoot-outs. The period piece appears to have gangster Sean Penn up against cop Ryan Gosling, but is there a woman they both share? Who will ultimately rule L.A.? Warner Bros. is now planning a roll out on January 11th. The film also stars Emma Stone, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte and James Carpinello.
