Adele’s 21 Ties Whitney Houston Chart Record

Houston’s Greatest Hits re-enters Billboard albums chart at #6 with only one day of sales after her death. By Gil Kaufman Adele Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images Grammy queen Adele will celebrate a career landmark next week when her Album of the Year-winning 21 matches a Billboard 200 chart record. The excitement will come with a tinge of sadness, though, as the remarkable 20th nonconsecutive week at #1 matches the high-water mark set by Whitney Houston ‘s “Bodyguard” soundtrack in 1992-93. In a tragic coincidence, Adele matched that mark in the same week that the “I Will Always Love You” singer was found dead Saturday at age 48 in her Los Angeles hotel room. The death came less than 24 hours before Adele scooped up six Grammys for 21, which will mark a full year on the charts during the next reporting cycle. Adele reached that mark with sales of 237,000 copies of her album, a 95 percent increase over the previous week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The increase pushed the album past the 6.6 million mark in total sales, and experts predict that sales could double yet again next week in the wake of the Grammy triumph. There were plenty of other new faces in the almost all-new top 10, including reunited rock icons Van Halen , whose comeback album with original lead singer David Lee Roth, A Different Kind of Truth, will come in at #2 on sales of 187,000. Right behind was Now That’s What I Call Music! 41 (#3, 142,000), followed by Scars & Stories by The Fray , Paul McCartney ‘s covers album Kisses From the Bottom (#5, 74,000) and Houston’s resurgent Whitney: The Greatest Hits, which, within just one day of her death, climbed to #6 with sales of 64,000. The uptick represents a 10,419 percent gain over the previous week, when it moved just 1,000 copies. Country star Dierks Bentley ‘s Home debuted at #7 (55,000) and the 2012 Grammy Nominees album was at #8 (51,000). Adele’s debut, 19, jumped up 10 places to #9 as sales increased 103 percent to 36,000, and Drake ‘s Take Care rounded out the top 10 with sales of 32,000. Though the true Grammy bump won’t hit until next week, show performers Coldplay got an early boost, with sales of Mylo Xyloto up 105 percent to 28,000 as the album moved 14 spots to #14. It was a harsh second-week comedown for polarizing pinup crooner Lana Del Rey , though, as her debut, Born to Die, suffered a 62 percent drop, plunging 11 spots to #13 on sales of 29,000. Tune in as we celebrate the life of an icon with “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on MTV. Justin Bieber And Esperanza Spalding: One Year Since Their Grammy Showdown

MTV News looks at what the artists have been up to since Spalding beat out Bieber for Best New Artist at the 2011 Grammys. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Last year, Esperanza Spalding beat out sure bets like Justin Bieber, Florence and the Machine and Drake when she won the Best New Artist prize at the 2011 Grammy Awards . The loss was particularly hard on Bieber , who spoke to MTV News shortly after the loss. “I had no clue what was going to happen; I worked really hard these past few years, and you know, I’m not going to lie — I was disappointed,” Bieber told MTV News at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. “But, you know, I’m gonna come back [next year] and we’ll take a few home. … I’m inspired to work harder than I did last year. It’s going to be hard, but I’m going to try.” Spalding was nearly as floored by the win as Bieber. “I really didn’t think it was going to be me,” she told MTV News backstage. “I was one of those [surprised] people. … It was so unexpected, that’s the truth. I’m grateful to all my people in my big musical family that have given me so much support and help over the years. I don’t really think this is for me; it’s for all of us. And I wish they could all be here to put one finger on this with me.” In the 12 months since last year’s Grammy show, Bieber has been everywhere and has certainly lived up to his promise to work hard. He’s released new music as well as lots of splashy music videos, gone on an arena-filling world tour, dropped a box-office-busting 3-D concert film, hit the studio for his upcoming album Believe and kept teen girls screaming with an onslaught of various new hairstyles and photo ops. Spalding, on the other hand, has managed to fly under the radar in the time since she took home Grammy gold. However, this March she plans to get back on the scene and release her new album, Radio Music Society, her follow-up to Chamber Music Society, the 2010 album that helped bring national attention to her at the Grammys last year. “Originally I thought it would be fun to release a double album,” she said in a statement about the soon-to-be released album. “One disc with an intimate, subtle exploration of chamber works and a second one in which jazz musicians explore song forms and melodies that are formatted more along the lines of what we would categorize as pop songs. Those are the two things that really interest me, and it intrigues me to think about different presentation approaches while writing each kind of song.” As she sets out to celebrate the anniversary of her win, Spalding dropped a new track, “Black Gold,” to radio, and earlier this month she premiered the video for it. She’ll also hit the road for a tour that kicks off in April and wraps up in June. Interestingly enough, Bieber is also set to drop his new album later this year, for which he’s enlisted Drake, will.i.am, Pharrell and Lil Wayne. Could it mean there will be another Bieber/Spalding showdown at the 2013 Grammy Awards? Only time will tell. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Nicki Minaj Admits She’s ‘Becoming More Guarded’

‘Now that so many eyes are on me, I feel I have to deliver,’ rapper says in interview with Paper magazine. By Tomika L. Anderson Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Fame is beginning to go to Nicki Minaj ‘s head, but not in the way you might think. The Grammy-nominated rapper revealed to Paper magazine that the more successful she becomes, the more pressure she feels to deliver — and that all that stress is taking a psychological toll. “Ugh! I have been working so much,” the 29-year-old tells interviewer Simon Doonan, Barneys New York’s creative ambassador at large. “Success came, and now that so many eyes are on me, I feel I have to deliver. And it’s a business. No joke. I guess I’m stressing more than I should be, and I think I am becoming more guarded.” To relax, Ms. Minaj admits to indulging in reality TV — and apparently, a lot of it. “I love [‘Mob Wives’ star] Big Ang … And I love the way those girls talk to each other: ‘Don’t YOU be coming at ME!!!’ I love every freakin’ moment. And I watch ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and ‘[The Real Housewives of] Beverly Hills.’ ” Music, of course, is also an emotional outlet for the rap star. She says the process of recording her upcoming album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, made her feel “very free.” “The album is like a collage of all my emotions. I’m not sticking to any particular style. I am doing what I feel without restrictions. So it’s very free and very me.” The issue hits stands on February 20. Meanwhile, look for Minaj this Sunday at the Grammys , where she is expected to perform her new single “Roman Holiday.” She is also up for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for “Moment 4 Life” with Drake. Rihanna To Perform With Coldplay At Grammys

‘We Found Love’ singer will join band for ‘Princess of China.’ By Gil Kaufman Rihanna Photo: WireImage Rihanna and Coldplay will perform live together for the first time on February 12 when they take the stage at the 54th annual Grammy Awards for the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration, “Princess of China.” Rihanna, nominated for four Grammys this year, broke the news on Twitter , writing, “My friends @ColdPlay and I will be sharing the stage for a performance at this years Annual Grammy Awards!” A short time later she added, “WE reached 2BILLION views on @youtube !!! THANK U!!! I’m in a great mood, and I got some GREAT NEWS!!! PRINCESS OF CHINA #GRAMMYS2012.” The show, which will be hosted by rapper LL Cool J , will also feature a performance by rock icon Paul McCartney, who will join a lineup that already includes Grammy nominees Foo Fighters, Kelly Clarkson, Bruno Marks, Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean. At the time Xyloto was released , Coldplay singer Chris Martin explained that the decision to invite another voice into the studio was made because of the unusual story arc of the band’s Grammy-nominated album. “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. … When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it. And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music,” Martin told MTV News. “Our new record is sort of a story; it’s not quite a musical, but it’s dangerously close. There’s a bit of a love-story thread, so we really needed someone to sing even higher than me,” Martin said. “[It’s] hard, but very possible. You need to be a female really. For all [drummer] Will [Champion]’s good intentions, he [can’t do it] … “… So, in like a dream scenario, we had a song that I’d secretly kind of written to see if Rihanna would want to sing it,” Martin continued. “And then the rest of the band wanted to keep it, so we came up with the idea of asking her to sing it with us, and, to our great surprise, she said OK.” More Grammy performers and presenters will be announced in the coming weeks. Robyn ‘Surprised’ By Grammy Nominations

At ‘Saturday Night Live’ rehearsals, singer tells MTV News, ‘I didn’t expect to still be working and promoting’ Body Talk Pt. 3 . By Jocelyn Vena Robyn Photo: Getty Images As Swedish pop sensation Robyn wraps up 2011, there are a few accolades she still can’t quite believe she bagged by year’s end. One of those highlights was being the “Saturday Night Live” musical guest this past weekend, and another was being nominated not once, but twice, for a Grammy . Robyn is up for Best Dance/Electronica Album for Body Talk Pt. 3 (one of several installments from the Body Talk album cycle she launched in 2010), as well as Best Dance Recording for the album’s swirling “Call Your Girlfriend.” “I’m excited about the fact that I’m on this show [‘SNL’] and the fact that I’ve been Grammy-nominated two times for this last part of Body Talk at a point where I’m like, ‘I thought I was done with this album,’ ” she explained to MTV News last week during “SNL” rehearsals . “I did my last show at the Hollywood Bowl a month ago, and I didn’t expect to still be working and promoting this piece of music, so I’m very excited to end the year in this way. “I was surprised that I was nominated for two [Grammys],” she later added. “That’s a really nice thing for me; whether I win or not [is] not the important thing. It’s about being nominated and being in that group of people that gets the chance to win it. So, I’m cool.” In addition to still getting Grammy love for Body Talk , Robyn is also looking ahead at what’s next. And, yes, Robyn fans, that does include new tunes. “I’m going to go back into the studio soon, maybe next year, with this great feeling of ending the album this way,” she explained, before adding that she still has no idea how her next release will sound. “I’m trying to not think about working at the moment,” she said. “After [‘SNL’], I’m going to go home to Sweden and celebrate Christmas with my family and just take some time off and think about other things other than music for a while and reboot, eat food, sleep.” Did you see Robyn on “SNL”?
