NBC’s Gregory: Obama to Claim ‘Warlord-ism’ in GOP, O’Donnell’s ‘Extremist’ Views Would Be a ‘Real Problem’ ‘Almost Anywhere’

It’s one thing to acknowledge that most voters in a liberal-leaning state like Delaware may be reluctant to vote for a solid conservative, but, as he appeared on Sunday’s Today show on NBC, Meet the Press host David Gregory claimed that Delaware GOP Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell’s “extremist statements and some views” would not only be a “real problem” in Delaware, but “it would be the case almost anywhere.” And, rather than noting the liberal lean of Delaware, which has not voted Republican in a presidential election since 1988, Gregory described the state as “more moderate.” Gregory: “Christine O’Donnell also represents a real problem for the Republican party. I mean, her track record of statements, extremist statements and some views on issues are going to be a real problem – not just in a state like Delaware that’s more moderate, but it would be the case almost anywhere.” And, as Gregory described how President Obama might try to portray Republicans as extreme, the NBC host seemed to channel MSNBC’s Chris Matthews as he suggested that Obama might claim that “warlord-ism” is “going on within the party, extremism within the party.” After noting that the Tea Party movement indicates Republicans are energized to vote in November, Gregory continued: Beyond that, you’ll see the President and his allies saying, “Look, this is a Republican party going through a revolution. They don’t know which side is up. There’s a kind of warlord-ism going on within the party, extremism within the party. This is not a party that you want to have leading the country.” That will be the argument that you hear more and more, and that you’re already hearing the President make. Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Sunday, September Today show on NBC: LESTER HOLT: Another woman to watch on the Republican side, virtual underdog Christine O’Donnell, pulled off the win in Delaware this past week. Same in New Hampshire, Tea Party candidate. What do we make of all this? And does it propel this Tea Party belief to a new level? DAVID GREGORY: I think it does because this was seen as even more unlikely than some of the other Tea Party triumphs around the country. Christine O’Donnell also represents a real problem for the Republican party. I mean, her track record of statements, extremist statements and some views on issues are going to be a real problem – not just in a state like Delaware that’s more moderate, but it would be the case almost anywhere. That’s why you’ve seen the likes of Karl Rove come out and say that this is a problem for the party. Even if he’s behind her or he thinks she can rehabilitate herself, the reality is that she makes it so much more difficult for Republicans to make a pick up there in that Senate race in Delaware. And that’s the larger issue, which is, is the Tea Party moving the party in a direction of narrow gains but more widespread losses when it comes to general elections? HOLT: And how do Democrats (INAUDIBLE)? How does the President and Democrats look at this, maybe borrow something with a playbook? What’s the thinking? GREGORY: Look, on the one hand, it hurts Democrats in the fall because there’s so much energy and enthusiasm on the Republican side. Conservatives are going to come out to vote. Democrats, liberals, that base of support that voted for Obama in ’08 doesn’t necessarily come out in those kinds of numbers for the midterm race. Beyond that, you’ll see the President and his allies saying, “Look, this is a Republican party going through a revolution. They don’t know which side is up. There’s a kind of warlord-ism going on within the party, extremism within the party. This is not a party that you want to have leading the country.” That will be the argument that you hear more and more, and that you’re already hearing the President make.

Gregory Michael: Vienna Girardi and I Made Out!

ABC can bleep his name all it wants, but Greek ‘s Gregory Michael is caught in the middle of the Breakup of the Century between Jake Pavelka and Vienna Girardi. In last night’s explosive interview on The Bachelorette , Jake accused his ex-fiancee of cheating with Michael, which she denied. “There [was] nothing,” she said. Michael says there was something, alright. “That’s a lie,” the actor told Us Weekly . “We definitely made out that weekend [June 20] and Vienna made it very clear that it was over between her and Jake.” Girardi said they only danced for less than “nine seconds,” but Michael counters: “I wouldn’t say we danced for a few seconds. We danced as a group all night.” “We also danced alone for parts of the evening.” Was Vienna Girardi lying about her dalliances with Gregory Michael during last night’s tell-all interview – and is Jake’s now-single ex seeing the Greek star now? Michael says she did tell the truth when she told Jake Pavelka that she hardly knew him: “At the time the interview was conducted, we hardly knew each other.” But he took aim at Jake when the former Bachelor star referred to him directly when saying, “That boy told me you cheated when he went on-the-record.” “I never said she cheated ,” Michael insisted. “I said we hooked up and she said they were broken up. I would never do that if she was in a relationship.” He says he doesn’t know anything about Pavelka’s claim that Vienna Girardi hooked up with other guys: “I don’t know what flings Jake is referring to.” The ABC interview ended with Vienna storming out in tears after Jake raised his hand in anger and stunningly reprimanded her for interrupting him. What do you think? Do you believe Vienna? Does this swing your opinion back toward Jake at all? NBC’s David Gregory: White House Rhetoric ‘Anti-Business,’ ‘Could Really Discourage Businesses’ in U.S.

Wow, just wow. Never would have seen this one coming, but is one of the standard-bearers of the media elite recognizing the Obama administration’s anti-business populist tone is inhibiting the U.S. economy? On the June 18 broadcast of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” NBC “Meet the Press” moderator David Gregory was asked to respond to a June 18 New York Times article by David Sanger suggesting the Obama administration may be “overstepping” and discouraging business growth in the United States. Gregory told “Squawk Box” viewers that in his view they were and called it “a real problem.” “It is, certainly beyond Washington,” Gregory explained. “You all know it talking to business leaders every day and I do speak to business leaders quite often as well and I hear it time and time again that what you got at the administration are two problems. One, you’ve got nobody in the inner sanctum of the President’s advisers who has ever run a business – who have never run a business. And that’s a real problem. I think there’s a level of recognition about that being a problem in the West Wing as well. But the rhetoric and the policy substantively, a lot of people feel, is anti-business and getting to a point where it could really discourage businesses in the United States and certainly the multinationals working here as well. That’s a problem and I think that element of criticism from Joe Barton, while off the reservation substantively, got to that larger point, which is this populist string.” Gregory elaborated on the lack of business experience in the President’s inner circle and explained it has hurt the White House’s ability to get solid policy measures in place. “I think they would like to have more people advising the President who have that business acumen,” Gregory said. “But let’s call it what it is. They made a decision early on in this financial crisis they were going to demonize anybody from Wall Street. They wouldn’t take anybody who had the quote, unquote ‘taint of Wall Street’ and that’s a problem because you have the expertise that they could have leveraged, brought inside, to try to deal with financial regulation and all the rest. He’s going to get financial reforms. But nevertheless, they made the decision, going back to the AIG mess and the bonuses. And that has carried forward.” And Gregory said he thought the White House was second-guessing their decision to take this route. “I think there is [second-guessing] because I think they recognize that, look they’re at a point on stimulus alone, who’s going to create the jobs here? Forty-one thousand private sector jobs last month. The private sector has to start to feel like it’s got more confidence to lend more, to start more business investment, to stop hoarding cash. And a lot of that is going on – again, I realize you know this better than I do because of the question marks and- all of the uncertainty coming out of Washington and particularly this administration.”
