‘It’s plotted out in my mind’s eye,’ Sly says of possible follow-up to bloodthirsty box-office champ. By Eric Ditzian Dolph Lundgren and Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables” Photo: Millennium Films When MTV News caught up with Sylvester Stallone at Comic-Con in late July, he professed more than a little nervousness about the possible fate of “The Expendables” at the box office . While Sly had hopes to shoot a sequel to his bombs-and-brawn throwback to ’80s action blockbusters, he wasn’t sure how everything would shake out and what his next project would be. “It all depends on how this film does,” he told us in San Diego. “Next thing might be directing at a parking lot, or it might be a film.” Now, it seems Stallone just might get the chance to shoot an “Expendables” sequel, after the first one opened to $35 million in ticket sales over the weekend. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter following the movie’s big opening, Stallone said he knows exactly the direction a sequel would take. “It’s plotted out in my mind’s eye,” he said. “I believe this group has to continue to evolve; it just can’t become the same people. So how do you get new people introduced into the group, and how do you have some of the other people leaving? Those are the challenges.” It was a challenge as well for Sly even to get “Expendables” made. He credited “Rambo” producer Avi Lerner for getting the flick a green light and called making “Expendables” one of his most satisfying Hollywood experiences. “My proudest moment ever was not ‘Rocky,’ it was the last Rocky picture, ‘Rocky Balboa,’ ” he said. “To be able to meet the challenge of completing that series after all these years, that was great. But this one here tops that — not in an emotional way but for excitement. This should have never happened. Avi Lerner really took a big gamble on me with this when nobody else would. I know because I heard about it every day! He kept worrying about the reviews.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Expendables.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Perry sings ‘California Gurls’ for a group of Australian high school students at their formal dance. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Ross Gilmore/Getty Images Katy Perry loves a good party . Who could forget her celeb-filled, Willy Wonka-themed birthday party last October? So, when Perry came across students celebrating their prom during a recent trip to Australia, the “California Gurls” singer decided to embrace her inner teenage dream and crash their party. According to Radar Online , Perry got her groove on at the Melbourne High School formal at the Grand Hyatt on Friday night. It happened to be the same hotel that Perry was staying at during her time Down Under. One student, Stefan Uzelac, told the website that Perry made her way into the party when she heard “California Gurls” playing, grabbed a microphone and started singing along. “It was towards the end of the night and everyone was having a good time,” Uzelac said. “Then Katy Perry decides to walk in and crash our formal!” “She appeared slightly drunk and was stumbling a little,” another student added about the 10 minutes that Perry spent at the party. “As she grabbed the microphone, she was surrounded by highly excited students and began singing along with the soundtrack. She was dancing and laughing with students until the end of the song when she was subtly whisked away by her security guards. Everyone went nuts and it was the perfect ending to our evening.” In a photo posted on Radar, Perry is seen wearing a black-and-white top and singing into a microphone surrounded by the prom revelers. Aceshowbiz.com reported that Perry also danced and sang along to Beyonc

‘No one is suing anyone,’ Perry tweets. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” Photo: Matthew Cullen Everybody just needs to calm down, OK? That was the message being sent on Thursday from both sides of the alleged “California Gurls”/ “California Girls” flap. One day after the New York Post reported that the publishing company that handles the Beach Boys’ catalog was considering suing Perry over her song’s appropriation of the key phrase from the classic surf group’s 1965 hit, Perry weighed in on the alleged dust-up. “And just to be clear … no one is suing anyone,” she tweeted . “The press just loves to once again fabricate & exaggerate stories to get hits of sell papers.” In a statement sent to MTV News on Thursday, Beach Boys member Mike Love, one of the co-writers along with Brian Wilson of “California Girls,” said, “The Beach Boys are definitely not suing Katy Perry; in fact we are flattered that her fantastically successful song is bringing to mind to millions of people our 1965 recording of the Beach Boys’ ‘California Girls.’ We think her song is great and wish her all the success in the world.” According to Billboard magazine, a spokesperson for Rondor Music also confirmed that no legal action is imminent over Perry’s smash hit , which has sold 3 million copies and topped the singles chart for weeks. “There is no lawsuit against the writers or publishers of ‘California Gurls,’ ” an unnamed Rondor source said. “We have established diminutive claim. It is up to the six writers and various publishers of ‘California Gurls’ to decide whether they honor the claim or not. … Using the words or melody in a new song taken from an original work is not appropriate under any circumstances, particularly from one as well known and iconic as ‘California Girls.’ … Rondor Music, who publishes the works of Brian Wilson and Mike Love, is committed to protecting the rights of its artists and songwriters, and with the support of the writers, that is exactly what we are doing.” The original song features the famous refrain, “I wish they all could be California girls,” while Perry’s version has rapper Snoop Dogg saying, “I really wish you all could be California girls.” Both Love and Wilson have expressed admiration for Perry’s song , and their spokesperson stressed on Thursday that any legal action over it would be undertaken by Rondor, which owns the track, not by the group’s members. ‘Snoop Dogg looks so awesome being the Wizard of Oz, kind of,’ Perry says of her co-star. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: MTV News In her “California Gurls” video , Katy Perry and her Gurls must defeat the evil Sugar Daddy ( Snoop Dogg ) and end his tyrannical reign over Candyfornia. But it’s not an easy thing to do, especially since he’s flanked by an army of Gummi Bears. When Perry spoke to MTV News about the video, she said that even though Snoop plays the bad guy, she loved getting the chance to work with the legendary MC. “OK, first off, Snoop Dogg looks so awesome being the Wizard of Oz, kind of, behind the music video,” she said. “He wants to keep all of the girls entrapped in his Candyfornia. He’s, like, the ruler, and I am the hero. … Snoop was amazing to work with.” Perry also loved playing opposite the Gummi Bear army. “One of the parts that just came up was the Gummi Bears giving the middle finger,” she said, while watching the video. “What’s funny about Gummi Bears is that they don’t have fingers so they just [have] their paw thing. We still had to blur it out. I thought it was really cute, and I like that the Gummi Bears are really evil.” But the Gummis were nothing in the face of Perry’s amazing frosting-cannon bra . “These whipped-cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammo,” she said. “I had to slay those Gummi Bears that were very evil. I had to show them who was boss in Candyfornia: the Gurls. The California Gurls, of course.” Will you ever look at Gummi Bears or whipped cream the same after seeing this video? Katy Perry Loved Defeating Snoop Dogg’s Gummi Bears In ‘California Gurls’ Video
‘It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her ‘California Gurls’ video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry dons a very unique piece of clothing for her “California Gurls” video , which made its sugary-sweet debut on Tuesday. In addition to her bedazzled Daisy Dukes and cupcake bra, there’s one particular accessory that will leave fans talking. In the latter part of the video, in order to defeat Snoop Dogg’s evil Sugar Daddy and his army of Gummi Bears, Perry turns to her whipped-cream-dispensing bra. “These whipped-cream [boobs] were in the music video because that was my only ammo,” she told MTV News. “I had to slay those Gummi Bears that were very evil. I had to show them who was boss in Candyfornia: the Gurls. The California Gurls, of course.” As cool as the costume may look now that the video is all done and ready for fans’ viewing pleasure, it wasn’t all that pleasant to wear during the shoot. “It was really intense with all that whipped cream coming from my back through my assets,” she said. On top of those chest-mounted frosting cannons, fans will also notice Katy’s cupcake bra, which was also a bit of a hassle on set. “I will tell you that those cupcake-bra boobies, they were a little bit heavy and they were interesting,” she said. “It was really fun making these costumes. They’re all one-of-a-kind, and I love the Bettie Page moment in the red and the whipped-cream cans.” What do you think of Perry’s whipped-cream brassiere? Tell us in the comments! The queen of ‘Candyfornia’ battles Snoop Dogg in a cavity-inducing fantasy world. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol As if the electric-blue wig , bedazzled bikini and chest-mounted frosting cannons didn’t give it away, let me be the first to tell you that Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video is just slightly over-the-top. Like, all the way over it … with whipped cream and cherry on top. Yes, the “Gurls” video — which premiered Tuesday (June 15) on MTV.com — is three minutes and 54 seconds of deliciously gaudy, delightfully ridiculous eye candy, a sugar-coated overload of confectionery gone haywire, cotton-candy clouds, gingerbread paths and Gummi Bears with bad attitudes. It is bright and brash and very likely to give you a toothache. Like the song, there is nothing understated about it. Directed by Mathew Cullen of the creative group known as Motion Theory, “California Gurls” re-imagines the Golden State as “Candyfornia,” a magical, cavity-inducing land where Sunset Boulevard becomes “Sundae Blvd” and the Hollywood sign rests on a whipped-cream mountain (the iconic Capitol Records building is also slyly inserted, constructed entirely of what appear to be vanilla wafers). Perry is the queen, parading down pastoral candy landscapes (which resemble the surrealist, saccharine work of artist Will Cotton , if you want to get deep about it). All appears to be well until Snoop Dogg — who plays the evil Sugar Daddy — begins to pull strings, in an attempt to wrest control of Candyfornia away from Queen Katy. From there, we have a battle between good and evil, as Perry attempts to free her Candyfornia cohorts from a variety of sweet traps (bubblegum, Jell-O, etc.) while Snoop readies his army of loyal Gummi Bears for the final showdown. Of course, there’s also time for KP to ascend into the heavens, strip naked, suggestively nibble cotton candy and perform a dance routine with her Gurls — because what kind of pop video would this be if there weren’t? Eventually, she climbs to Snoop’s castle to do battle, vanquishing him and his minions by firing frosting from her chest, in a scene that plays out in gratuitous slow-motion, basically for the heck of it. And then, at the clip’s end, Snoop is buried up to his neck in sand, surrounded by Perry and her Gurls. Not surprisingly, everything ends happily ever after … the Queen of Candyfornia is returned to her throne, the evil Sugar Daddy is banished, and dentists around the world rejoice, dreaming of the business this super-saccharine video will surely create. ‘It’s definitely something to watch when you have the munchies,’ she tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol There will probably be many good times to watch Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video, though Perry herself has one particularly interesting suggestion. “It’s definitely something to watch when you have the munchies. … It’s all edible,” she told MTV News. “[Plus,] Snoop is in it.” She’s right too. Judging by the sneak peek we saw a few weeks back, Snoop most definitely is in the “California Gurls” clip — along with marshmallows, candy canes and a whole lot of confectionaries too (most of which are used to cover up Perry and her backup dancers). All in all, it looks like it’s going to be a pretty sweet affair, though, to be honest, there’s not a whole lot about the video that reminds us of California. But, according to Perry, that was sort of the plan all along. “We named it ‘Candyfornia’ instead of ‘California,’ so it’s a different world,” she said. “It’s not just like, ‘Oh, let’s go to the beach and throw a party and then shoot a music video!’ It’s more like, ‘Let’s put us California Gurls in a whole different world!’ ” In keeping with that spirit, even though the song big-ups the beautiful ladies from the West Coast, Perry isn’t about to let her East Coast girls go unloved. In fact, the way she sees it, “California Gurls” can be a bicoastal anthem — you just have to wait for the weather to change in the East. “The boys always dream about dating a California Gurl … just because we’ve got the sun shining 365 days a year,” Perry laughed. “And I love New York girls. I think they’re hot, and I think they have a lot of attitude. But I’m telling you, when it comes wintertime, they’re all gonna be singing ‘California Gurls.’ ” Are you excited for the “edible” video? Summer-jam clip is sweet : Snoop Dogg, cupcake bikini tops, candy-cane trees and more. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Katy Perry better be careful … all that frosting isn’t safe for the summer months. Yes, ever since she debuted “California Gurls” — with a Tweet that declared “SUMMER STARTS NOW!” — we’ve been waiting for Perry to reveal the video for the song. Something we assumed would be beachy, breezy and beautiful. Boy, we couldn’t have been more wrong. On Sunday (June 6), during the pre-show of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , we got our first look at the “California Gurls” vid (the full-length version is scheduled to premiere June 15 on MTV), and, wow … there’s a whole lot of confectionary in the clip. The preview opens with Snoop Dogg guiding a miniaturized version of Katy through what looks very much like a version of the “Candy Land” board game, complete with gingerbread walkways, marshmallow clouds and candy-cane trees. Perry wanders about scooping up sweets while Snoop looks on from above. Oh, and then there’s the dance sequence, which sees Perry and a troop of candy-colored dancers performing moves while wearing little more than daisy dukes cutoffs (hey, just like in the song!) and bikini tops made out of cupcakes. Yeah, it’s pretty sweet, though, we’re not sure baked goods are exactly beach-approved. At the end of the preview, we see Perry wearing another bikini top, this one equipped with a pair of cannons that launch frosting at the camera. (Perhaps she’s channeling her inner Murakami .) Seriously, the 15th can’t come soon enough — it’s going to be a long, hot summer indeed! What do you think of this peek at Katy’s “California Gurls” video? Tell us in the comments! Her manager suggested the spelling variation as a reference to Big Star’s ‘September Gurls.’ By James Montgomery Katy Perry?s “California Gurls” Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic You might not realize it, what with the redonkulously catchy chorus, the Snoop cameo or the lyrical mentions of Daisy Dukes-wearing beach babes who will melt your popsicle, but Katy Perry’s brand-new “California Gurls,” the summer-ready first single from her upcoming Teenage Dream album , is actually a tribute to power-pop pioneers Big Star. Well, sort of. See, as Perry recently told Entertainment Weekly, she named the tune after Big Star’s 1974 song “September Gurls,” from their seminal Radio City album. And she did so — well, because her manager is a longtime Star fanatic. “My manager, Bradford, he’s from Mississippi, and he’s a huge Big Star fan,” Perry told EW. “And with the death of one of their members, I had just written that song, and he’s like, ‘Katy, just for me, will you please title it ‘California Gurls,’ with a ‘u’? People won’t even know!’ I don’t know the whole catalog of Big Star, but I did it because Bradford is one of my best friends, and I thought it was cool, and you know, the kids like those variations.” In March, Big Star frontman Alex Chilton died of a heart attack and was remembered days later by his friends, contemporaries and surviving band members at a South by Southwest tribute concert in Austin, Texas. A spokesperson for Perry’s label, Capitol, confirmed the Big Star story to MTV News. Her Teenage Dream album hits stores August 24. No word if it will include a song named after “The Ballad of El Goodo.” What do you think of Katy’s new single? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry
