Nicki Minaj Is ‘Fine As Hell’ In ‘Beez’ Video, 2 Chainz Says

‘She felt more free, I felt more free, that’s how you can see the camaraderie in the video,’ 2 Chainz tells MTV News of Nicki’s ‘Beez in the Trap’ clip. By Rob Markman 2 Chainz Photo: MTV News While filming the “Beez in the Trap” video , it was hard for 2 Chainz to ignore all of Nicki Minaj ‘s assets. Luckily, Deuce is a professional. “I was like, ‘Damn my little sister fine as hell,'” 2 Chainz told MTV News after a taping of MTV2’s upcoming game show “Hip Hop Squares.” Tity Boi then broke down his relationship with the Harajuku Barbie, one that dates back to around 2008. “I’ve known Nicki for a minute; I met her on the I Am Music Tour, the first leg with Wayne. It was cool, we had a great relationship, we used to talk, trip out here and there.” The “Beez” clip was shot in a strip club and features a bikini-clad Minaj counting hundred stacks. By the time 2 Chainz gets to his verse, Nicki grinds alongside him in leopard-print cat suit that accentuates her much-fawned-over rump. 2 Chainz attributes Nicki’s comfort while doing her naughty dance to the closed set. “When it’s closed off, she felt more free, I felt more free, that’s how you can see the camaraderie in the video and how we just kinda vibing with each other,” he said. As for Nicki, the MC just wanted to salute all of the dancers who supported her as she was performing in strip clubs at the beginning of her career. “When I see the strippers and all of that, they always show me love, so I wanted to kinda make a video around them,” the reigning rap queen said. “I hit up Benny Boom like, ‘Yo, I need a sexy video right now.’ I knew 2 Chainz wasn’t gonna be mad.” Deuce, who is preparing his solo debut Based on a T.R.U. Story for an August release on Def Jam, didn’t get to see the video while it was being edited but was very pleased with the result. “I just knew I got a little dance in on her and I’m glad they used it,” he said. “She’s very talented and I support what she’s doin’.” In other Nicki news, the Young Money star disappointed millions of fans when she deactivated her Twitter account on Sunday after feuding with a fansite for posting snippets from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded LP . “Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f–king bye,” she wrote before vanishing from the social networking site. Do you like the “Beez in the Trap” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj 2 Chainz

Nicki Minaj Turns Good Friday To Pink Friday At Secret Show

Young Money MC rocks her hometown with a surprise concert in the middle of New York’s Times Square. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj performs at Times Square Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Good Friday all of a sudden became Pink Friday when Nicki Minaj (and alter ego Roman) took the stage in Times Square to promote her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and the release of the remixed “Starships” video with DJ Doorly. The clip doesn’t hit YouTube until Saturday, but on Friday (April 6), Nicki riled up more than 1,000 fans who gathered to see the reigning rap queen rock an unannounced show, sponsored by Nokia . It was 7:30 p.m. ET when the counter on the stage clock hit zero and the blue curtain revealed the Female Weezy in all her glory. Dressed in a blond wig, white collared shirt and black one-piece with tiger-striped stockings, Nicki set things off properly with her current top-five single “Starships.” Fans threw their hands up and danced, releasing all their anxiety from the hours that they waited. “Who’s in love? Is anybody in love?” the Young Money star asked before launching into her Chris Brown-assisted midtempo “Right By My Side.” There was no Breezy, but Nicki made sure to bring that boom-ba-boom-boom with her when the beat for the infectious “Super Bass” dropped. The Harajuku Barbie danced and rapped, encouraging all her Barbz to sing along. “It’s an honor for me to be here tonight. I’m from New York,” she said before announcing to the crowd that they will be filmed and that the footage will be used in her new “Starships” DJ Doorly remix video. With only three songs performed, the show sure was short, but Nicki made sure everyone had a sweet time. What’s your favorite Nicki Minaj song? Let us know in the comments! Nicki Minaj Deserves Her Own Genre On Roman Reloaded

MC serves up hip-hop and pop on the bipolar Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which leaked online Wednesday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Search for Nicki Minaj ‘s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded in iTunes, and you’ll find that it’s tucked tight in the hip-hop/rap section, but putting Nick’s sophomore album in the confines of a single genre only tells half the story. The album was illegally leaked onto the Internet on Wednesday night, but when Barbs officially unwrap Roman’s new LP on April 3, they’ll find a culmination of her musical growth neatly sequenced in a symmetrical pop/rap package. The first half of Roman Reloaded recalls Nicki the Ninja’s mixtape days, where she spewed nothing but venom on tracks like “I Get Crazy” and “Itty Bitty Piggy.” The album opener, “Roman Holiday,” isn’t unfamiliar, but the theatrical track which Nicki brought to life at the 2012 Grammys makes more sense in the context of the LP. The vaudevillian hook gives way to some pretty clever rhymes that many may have missed during the much-panned televised performance. “Anyway stylists go get Bulgari/ I am the ultimate Svengali/ You bitches can’t even spell that/ You hoes buggin’ repel that,” she spits before getting schizophrenic, switching up to a flow that has hints of the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Sure, Nicki is a pop icon, but these days, so are Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. The Young Money superstar refuses to give up any rap ground, however, and the first seven tracks from Roman Reloaded are unapologetically street. The Hit-Boy-produced “Come On a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader” are both anchored by bass-rattling beats and both find Nicki (as Roman) inviting haters to her figurative male genitalia. On the latter, the Female Weezy pounds her chest alongside Rick Ross and Cam’ron, baiting her competition with lines like: “Nunchuck her, no time to duck her/ Sign of the cross ’cause this is her last supper.” Roman Reloaded has more rap features than her 2010 debut: 2 Chainz shows up for “Beez in the Trap” and Wayne appears twice, once on the title track and then again on “Sex in the Lounge.” Nicki then gives the hood some inspiration with Nas, Drake and Young Jeezy in tow on the uplifting “Champion,” but shortly after that, the bipolar LP takes a sharp turn. Rather than mix hip-hop with her ever-growing pop sensibilities, Nicki presents Roman Reloaded as a two-parter. If cassettes were still the music medium of choice, there’d be a stark contrast between the A and B sides. RedOne’s pulsating sound dominates on the Harajuku Barbie’s current top 10 single “Starships” and continues for five songs straight — the sequencing is not coincidental. “Pound the Alarm” is an adrenaline-laced fist-pumper, and “Whip It” proves that the reigning rap queen picked up quite a few tricks touring alongside Britney Spears last year. “Automatic” is another sweat-inducing dance anthem that should keep Minaj on the charts while her rap fare will keep her in the conversation amongst the hottest MCs. Over the course of 19 tracks, the Barbs should find a song to suit their every mood. “Fire Burns” for when they’re nursing heartbreak, “Marilyn Monroe” for when the world seems to be just too much and “Hov Lane” when they want to celebrate their relative victories. Since her come-up days, Nick has refused to be put in a box. With her cocksure rap demeanor, it’s hard to ignore her hip-hop roots, but when you factor in her ability to craft a popular tune, the possibilities become endless. Roman Reloaded is a further realization of those infinite possibilities, so instead of defining Nicki Minaj by category, maybe it’s time to give her own genre. Is Nicki Minaj A Lock For Best New Artist Grammy?

Femcee seems anything but ‘new’ at this point, but it remains to be seen if her domination translates to Grammy gold come Sunday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images It’s getting increasingly difficult to think of Nicki Minaj as a new artist. If you judge the Young Money raptress by the time she’s spent in the game, then she is no doubt a newcomer. On the other hand, if you measure the “Super Bass” star by her accomplishments, then she has accumulated enough stats in 14 months to rival some industry veterans. Though it may seem unfair to some that she is even nominated, Nicki’s accelerated artistic growth makes her a heavy favorite in the Best New Artist category at the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. When weighted against other Best New noms like the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole and Skrillex, Nicki’s path is a unique one. She started out an MC but grew into so much more under the direction of YM head honcho Lil Wayne. When Weezy first discovered Minaj rapping on a street DVD, she was as cocksure and combative as any of her male counterparts, but after signing with Young Money, Nicki used the platform to amplify the natural performance talents that existed within. There were glimpses on her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, but it wasn’t until the Harajuku Barbie dropped her debut, Pink Friday, in November 2010 that her full potential was unleashed, when she displayed her passion for both rapping and singing. Yes, technically her debut album was released in the 2010 calendar year, but the Grammy calendar does leave wiggle room and make her eligible for the Best New Artist nomination. The Queens, New York, rap star didn’t start out the gate as hot as some speculated, but she did snag the #1 album spot on the Billboard charts in her 11th week. In October 2010, Minaj set a record for having the most singles on the Hot 100, notching seven songs at the same time. “Your Love,” “Right Thru Me” and the Drake-featuring “Moment 4 Life” all made significant radio impact, but it was “Super Bass” that proved to be her biggest and most inescapable hit. Nicki, with the help of alter ego Roman, has emerged as a strong visual artist as well through her “Moment 4 Life” video and the super colorful “Super Bass.” The rap rook has also toured with Britney Spears and Lil Wayne. It’s also important to note that Nicki’s prowess in the studio has led her to be a ubiquitous figure in pop culture. She has had a Barbie doll made in her likeness, inked a deal for her own nail polish with OPI, became the face of MAC’s 2012 Viva Glam campaign and has either appeared on the covers or shot for too many glamour magazines to name. Yes, Nicki Minaj does seem to be a lock for Best New Artist, but then again, this is the Grammys and no one ever thought Esperanza Spalding would beat out pop icon Justin Bieber . So maybe the Band Perry have a shot after all. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don’t miss Sway and James Montgomery live from the Grammys red carpet this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Willow Smith And Nicki Minaj Heat Up ‘Fireball’ Video

Clip, which premiered Wednesday on ‘106 & Park,’ features Smith dancing on an empty street. By James Dinh Willow Smith and Nicki Minaj in “Fireball” Photo: RocNation Don’t let Willow Smith ‘s age fool you: This on-the-rise starlet already knows how to command the center of attention. Her fiery presence is evident in her new “Fireball” video, featuring Nicki Minaj , which premiered Wednesday (December 7) on BET’s “106 & Park.” Directed by Roman Lee, “Fireball” is a simplistic take on Smith’s sassy and youthful energy. It begins with a shot of a deserted sidewalk and cuts to a scene of the 11-year-old singer in front of blazing flames in an elaborately decked out ensemble, including a headpiece. As dancers perform a choreographed routine, Smith is seen strutting down the street with everlasting swag and attitude. “Since I landed here, I gon’ phone up a Obama/ Shook the world up, now I caused a little drama/ Leader of the new school, and yes I’m gonna light up the block to the stage when I wanna,” she sings. It’s not long before Young Willow also shows her dancing skills when she joins in on the extravaganza, throwing in a few hair whips here and there. Minaj visits the street takeover soon after in an over-the-top dress made of fluorescent-colored teddy bears and matching fur boots. While streetlights glimmer on the wet pavement, the Young Money diva dances beside the singer as she spits her guest verse. In a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest , Smith gushed about working with the Harajuku Barbie, saying, “Nicki Minaj is absolutely an amazing person. She has so much energy, and working with her was like just [a] spark. We were coming together with all our art and everything, and it was amazing.” “Fireball” is Smith’s latest single from her debut album, Willow: You Think You Know Me, which is scheduled to hit stores April 3. It’s been just about two months since the pintsize starlet dropped the Stoopid Robots-produced tune. What do you think of the “Fireball” video? Share your reviews in the comments below! Nicki Minaj, Donatella Explain Hip-Hop’s Versace Obsession

Minaj, the new face of Versace for H&M, and the fashion icon chat with MTV News about brand’s enduring appeal. By Rebecca Thomas Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Back in the late ’90s, Versace was to the Bad Boy camp what Supreme is to Odd Future — nothing less than a uniform. Of course, whereas Tyler and crew can set up shop at the Los Angeles outpost, the ultra high-end Italian label hadn’t exactly been marketing to new-money rappers from the ‘hood. But that didn’t ruin budding mogul Sean Combs ‘ (then Puff Daddy) appetite for the couture line. Espousing his “ghetto fabulous” ethos, Combs outfitted his roster in the colorful prints with those gold Madusa details, and an enduring hip-hop love affair was born. When MTV News heard that Nicki Minaj had teamed up with the house of Versace as they rolled out a collection for fast-fashion retailer H&M, we couldn’t wait to ask the Harajuku Barbie what the brand meant to her. We caught up with her on the red carpet of the launch last week, and it turned out one of Bedford-Stuyvesant’s finest was on her mind. “We can remember Biggie Smalls talking about Versace,” Nicki, dressed in a multicolor beaded pantsuit topped with a palm-frond accented wig, told us about the late Bad Boy MC. “It’s something that as a little girl, growing up in hip-hop, you never really think you’ll get a chance to — I never thought I’d get to model for Versace, you know what I mean?” Although Versace shades quickly became a status accessory among rising rappers in rap’s glossy, shiny-suit era, it was Diddy and Big who truly cemented the brand’s place, name-checking it in songs like the “One More Chance” remix and J.U.N.I.O.R. Mafia’s “Get Money” ( My Mo-schi-no ho, my Versace hottie, Big rapped on the Lil’ Kim collabo). Indeed, Biggie and Puff donned matching silk Versace shirts for ’97’s “Hypnotize” video, which would become the final visual offering from the late rapper. “It’s just a big deal because they’ve been clothing the hip-hop generation for a very, very long time,” Nicki added about the line founded in the late 1970s by Gianni Versace. “Whether we could afford it or not, we wanted it.” Fashion icon (and sister of the late Gianni) Donatella Versace told MTV News she was flattered by how right-now rappers and pop stars like Lady Gaga , Big Sean and “fantastic” Nicki continue to embrace the brand. And the platinum-blond designer had a theory about why. “I feel all the [artists like Gaga and Sean] … are people who like to dare and to take risks, and [it’s the same] in fashion so that combination works,” Versace said. Earlier this summer, Gaga announced to a U.K. style site that she planned to feed her fashionable fixation by wearing “only Versace for, like, the next two months.” Around the same time, G.O.O.D. Music breakout star Big Sean ordered up vintage Versace threads and shades on the Hype Williams set of his sexy “Marvin & Chardonnay” vid. “If we gonna have Versaces, it’s gonna be the OG Medusa-head Versace,” he insisted. Donatella could clearly sense nostalgia was in bloom. “It’s a moment that I felt was the right moment,” she said of launching the mass collection. “It’s a lot of requests for Versace iconic pieces like printed shirts, and everybody is doing homage to Versace so I decided to give them the real thing to H&M, to the kids!” she smiled. Chelsea Settles Previews Episode: Workout ‘Was Insanity’

‘I wanted to quit,’ reality star tells MTV News about new episode at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Chelsea Settles Photo: MTV News Since Chelsea Settles launched herself as MTV’s next great reality star last month, it’s been an interesting journey for both viewers and Settles herself. In the episode airing tonight (November 8), Chelsea Settles gets her butt kicked during her first workout in the City of Angels. “I’m most nervous for the first workout with Angela. It was insanity,” she dished to MTV News. “It was nuts, nuts, nuts, nuts. I wanted to quit. I felt like I should just be fat for the rest of my life.” During the super-tough workout, she said she was thinking, ” ‘Why do I need to go through this?’ I knew that I wanted to lose weight, but I didn’t know the hard work and dedication it would take to get there. I wish there was some sort of magic cure to end it all. I didn’t want to put in the hard work. I was embarrassed … so it was kind of mental.” Over the course of the season, those trying moments have helped Settles connect with the audience, and fan feedback has been incredibly positive toward her. “It’s really crazy, and I can’t believe it because we’re almost halfway there,” she said. “It’s kind of a whirlwind but I’m excited to get to interact with a lot of the viewers, and I’m glad that the response has been the way that it has. There’s such an outpouring of love and sincerity from so many people, and I just feel grateful.” While fans love watching Settles grow week after week, it’s been really overwhelming for her. “I cringe every Tuesday before the show airs,” she admitted. “I have butterflies in my stomach. I don’t know what to expect. It’s just it’s weird to see that I played the victim so much. I never realized that I did that. I blamed everything on my weight, and in a lot of the situations, it had nothing to do with my weight.” So, what does Settles blame for her early strife on the show? “It was just lack of confidence and me needing to come into my own, but I just have to accept myself as that girl and love her just as much as I love myself now,” she said. “And that’s been the process that I’ve been going through.” Don’t miss the new episode of “Chelsea Settles,” airing tonight (November 8) at 10 p.m. ET/PT (9 Central) on MTV. Nicki Minaj Very ‘Selective’ About Next Project

‘She wants hit records every time and she wants to be creative,’ producer Kane Beatz tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage Behind the Beats: Kane Beatz When Nicki Minaj and Kane Beatz got together on her Pink Friday debut, the results were undeniable. Besides crafting songs like the soul-baring “Dear Old Nicki” and braggadocious album opener “I’m the Best,” the Florida producer gave the Harajuku Barbie a smash single with “Super Bass.” So it makes sense that just as Nicki the Ninja heads back into the studio to begin working on her follow-up, she’s tapped Kane for a beat or two. “It’s crazy. We got one so far. She’s in L.A. goin’ crazy,” the platinum hitmaker told Mixtape Daily while he walked the black carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards . Kane, who is also working with Roscoe Dash and with Rick Ross on his upcoming God Forgives, I Don’t LP, revealed that Nicki is in the planning stages of her next album, so things could take awhile. “She just started, so she’s really picking her music and picking the songs. She’s real selective,” he said. “She’ll pick all the beats before she even starts writing, so right now, we’re just getting music together, and it’s goin’ crazy right now.” When working with Minaj, the “Bed Rock” producer focuses on presenting the Young Money star with hit records but also different types of beats that can allow her imagination to run wild. “She wants hit records every time and she wants to be creative,” he said. “With Nicki, it’s more about getting the music right and leaving her the room to be creative and leaving her room to do her.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
