Bitcoin Exchange CEO Charlie Shrem: Charged with Money Laundering For Silk Road Clients

Federal agents have arrested Charlie Shrem, CEO of Bitcoin exchange BitInstant, for money laundering in connection with online drug exchange Silk Road. The U.S. attorney’s office said Shrem helped someone he hadn’t met in person, Robert Faiella, sell more than $1 million worth of bitcoins to Silk Road customers. Bitcoin CEO Arrested Shrem was arrested at JFK Airport Sunday. Faiella, his 52-year-old partner, allegedly ran an underground Bitcoin exchange using the alias BTCKing. He was arrested at his home in Cape Coral, Fla. Both are charged with conspiracy to launder money and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Additionally, Shrem faces a charge for not tipping off the government. Shrem, 24, is a major player in the Bitcoin world. The BitInstant exchange, based in New York City, lets people buy bitcoins locally at more than 700,000 locations. It received a $1.5 million investment last year from Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Shrem is also vice chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, CNN reports. The Winklevoss twins said in an emailed statement that they are “deeply concerned” about Shrem’s arrest, and that they were assured his actions were legal. Shrem allegedly sold Faiella the bitcoins that eventually made their way to drug buyers and sellers, according to an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service. Though Shrem knew where the money ultimately ended up, he never reported it to the U.S. Treasury Department, according to the U.S. attorney. Faiella was allegedly pumping them into Silk Road on a regular basis. Federal documents cite emails between Shrem and Faiella that show how they worked together, although Shrem never knew Faiella by his actual name. For example, when Faiella’s frequent and large cash deposits raised eyebrows at a cash processing company, Shrem advised Faiella on how to avoid sounding alarms. The IRS claims the partners exchanged $1.05 million in bitcoins over a 10-month period ending in October 2012. Faiella eventually ended the partnership.

Drugs Are Bad M’Kay: 52-Year-Old Man Swallows Gulf Ball-Sized Bag Of That White Girl And Dies While In Police Custody

Did he not think he was going to die ? Man Dies After Swallowing Drugs According to The NY Post A man died while in police custody last night when he choked on a golf ball-sized bag of drugs after struggling with cops in the Bronx, authorities said. Bronx narcotics cops allegedly saw Jose Muniz, 52, make a hand-to-hand drug deal in front a Norwood bodega on Jerome Avenue at around 10:50 p.m. before officers tried to arrest him, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters today at a press conference in Harlem. When Muniz saw plainclothes cops approaching, he allegedly tried to hide the drugs. “We believe that the individual took a golf ball-sized package of drugs, and put it into his mouth,” Kelly said. The cops grabbed Muniz and pepper sprayed him during a struggle before he was on the ground and cuffed, Kelly said. That’s when officers noticed that Muniz had stopped breathing. “He choked on that bag and CPR was given to him at the scene and en route to the hospital,” he continued. Muniz died a short time later at Bronx North Central Hospital, authorities said. Kelly said that the Internal Affairs Bureau would continue to investigate the incident. Cops said Muniz had been arrested over 30 times including for narcotics possession, burglary and possession of a firearm, among other crimes. We don’t feel bad for this dumbazz. Man Pulls Knife in Rockefeller Center, Evacuates Today Show Set

An unidentified man pulled out a knife and sliced himself open this morning in Rockefeller Center. The incident took place around 7:50 during Today ‘s live broadcast, though NBC did not catch it on camera. A few minutes later, Matt Lauer updated viewers on what took place. “There was an incident a short time ago,” he said. “A man attempted to harm himself with a knife. He did manage to cut himself. He was controlled by our security team out there. However, he did harm himself, and he is being attended to by medical personnel. So, we’re keeping the area clear for law enforcement.” The co-anchor added that the man “did say something about not wanting to harm others.” In that regard, he was successful: no bystanders were injured. Witnesses tell The New York Daily News , meanwhile, that the individual ranted about how the Internal Revenue Service is corrupt and “ruined his life.” He then pulled out a pocket knife and announced he was going to cut himself. But an onlooker actually wrestled it away from the man… only for him to produce another and successfully inflict a self-wound. Lauer later took to Twitter with an update, writing, “All secure on the plaza after a scary incident. Thanks to our security team and the NYPD.”

Danielle Staub Files for Bankruptcy

Remember Danielle Staub? No? That pretty much sums up the former reality star’s financial woes. The ex- Real Housewives of New Jersey star – who once bragged about her Black American Express Card- has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, ironically listing American Express as one of her 35 creditors. Staub reportedly owes between $500,000 and $1,000,000, the same amount listed as her assets, according to her court petition. Since exiting the Bravo franchise, Danielle has unsuccessfully tried to capitalize on her fame, from charging money to speak to idiots on the phone to stripping at Scores in New York City. It’s shocking no one turned out to pay money for the latter, isn’t it? Other creditors listed on the bankruptcy petition include: the Internal Revenue Service, the State of New Jersey Division of Taxation, PSE&G and nine law firms, along with the Township of Wayne, where Staub resided during her stint on the show. Nas To Take On Uncle Sam On Life Is Good

‘My side of the story is on the record,’ MC tells ‘RapFix Live’ of his multimillion-dollar tax woes. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nas on “RapFix Live” Photo: Natasha Chandel/ MTV News If you want to know Nas ‘ take on his multimillion-dollar tax woes, then you’ll have to buy his new album. In February, TMZ reported that Queensbridge MC owes more than $6 million in back taxes, and now the Internal Revenue Service plans to garnish wages earned from his music publishing until things are even Steven. Ever the wordsmith, Nas got creative with his “no comment” comment when he appeared on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “My side of the story is on the record and I speak about it on the record,” he said of how he plans to address his tax troubles on his upcoming Life Is Good LP. Speaking of his 10th solo album, God’s Son told Sway that the LP’s title is evolving. “The record is starting to take on a whole different new thing and it’s just bigger than Life Is Good now,” he explained. “Yeah, life is good, but there’s so much information I think that’s important that I get out there that I think the title is becoming bigger.” And if the album’s first two singles are any indication, Life is Good is anything but happy-go-lucky. “Nasty,” the LP’s first single, which the rapper released in 2011, is a sonic throwback to the gritty, New York-style rap of the 1990s. Nas’ latest single, “The Don,” is also reminiscent of a different era of rap. The Heavy D and Salaam Remi-produced track samples reggae star Super Cat and finds Nas rapping about his days hustling in the street and his hip-hop beginnings. Nas hasn’t announced a release date for Life is Good yet, but it’s hard to imagine that he’d have anything nice to say toward Uncle Sam. What are you hoping to hear from Nas on Life Is Good ? Richard Hatch Sent Back to Prison

Richard Hatch, winner of Survivor and current contestant on Celebrity Apprentice , is going to jail for not paying taxes for the money he won on Survivor . The reality star has served more than three years for tax evasion already. He has been under supervised release and was supposed to re-file his taxes. Hatch, who apparently can’t outwit, outplay or outlast the Internal Revenue Service, failed to do so again and did not fork over taxes from 2000-01. Richard needs to Hatch a plan to hire an accountant. “It needs to be a severe punishment,” U.S. District Court Judge William Smith told Hatch. “That’s the only thing that will deter you in the future.” Hatch was also ordered to serve 26 months of supervised release. During that time, a quarter of his gross income will be paid directly to the IRS. Hatch, who now owes an estimated $2 million, reports to prison Monday. There’s a lesson in this, people. Withholding. It works pretty effectively.

Tax Refund Season Is Here, But Did You Know That…

This news is for all you going to the hood tax man that has that jibber-jabber about getting your refund back in a week: When it comes to your tax returns, you hope they will be processed quickly. But now, the Internal Revenue Service claims a few of you won’t get yours right on time. IRS officials say the delay in processing returns for taxpayers is due to late changes in the 2010 tax code. They go on further to say they won’t be able to start the processing of your returns if you: 1. Itemize your deductions, 2. Claim a deduction for college tuition and fees 3. or if you’re a teacher who claims a deduction for out-of-pocket classroom expenses. All of these won’t be processed until February 14th. There is good news for all other taxpayers. Your returns should be processed normally. What’s real cold about this whole situation is…the hood tax man already knew this.
