Patrick Stump Recalls Giving Himself Bad Haircuts On ‘When I Was 17’

‘It did not look cool, but I was so convinced that it was,’ Stump says on Saturday’s episode. By James Dinh Patrick Stump appears on the upcoming episode of “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News Patrick Stump may be rocking a head full of spiky hair nowadays, but just a few years before the Fall Out Boy alum made it big, he had a different sort of look. On the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the singer/songwriter reminiscences about his teenage years when he used to be his own barber. “When I was 17, I cut my own hair and always did a botched job on it,” Stump admits without any hesitation on the upcoming episode, which airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. “It was terrible. It did not look cool at all, but I was so convinced that it was.” And how exactly does one mess up a buzz cut? Patrick said it’s all about angles. “I would take the barber clippers and buzz my head, and straight on it would look fine, but you would always miss these hairs around your ears,” he explained. And it wasn’t subtle mistakes, either. “So it was just kind of these long strands right over here. It was a weird look,” childhood friend Pete said. Stump explained that his haircut imperfections had the soon-to-be singer donning a rather interesting look. “So every so often they’d flop over and I’d have this weird, like, owl thing going on,” he said. “It was horrible. The haircut thing was not the best idea, probably.” In addition to Stump, this week’s episode of “When I Was 17” also features “Jersey Shore” newcomer Deena Nicole Cortese , who opened up about her dirty-dancing antics as a teen. “I remember making up this crazy dance move, like sexy moves, you know, like shaking your butt,” she admits. “Everybody was sitting there like, ‘Oh my God, where did that come from?’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Deena Cortese and Patrick Stump — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. ‘Glee’ Co-Star Says Matthew Morrison Compares Debut To Justin Timberlake

Jenna Ushkowitz says her castmate also calls it ‘symphonic-sounding.’ By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Kara Warner Matthew Morrison Photo: Getty Images Justin Timberlake might have been attending the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards as an acting nominee (along with his “The Social Network” ensemble), but it looks like he might also have some competition in his other field: Music. “Glee” star Matthew Morrison is getting ready to turn out his debut solo record and said he might be poised to give Timberlake a run for his money. Jenna Ushkowitz, who was nominated along with her “Glee” co-stars for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, revealed to MTV News she’s already had a listen to Morrison’s latest effort. Ushkowitz saw Morrison perform a few of his new songs at The Grove in Los Angeles over the weekend, saying, “He was amazing. “We’re really proud of him,” she said on behalf of her fellow “Glee”-mates, adding, “His music is really great.” While Ushkowitz said she thought Morrison “made his own sound,” her onscreen teacher had his own definition of it: “He says it’s a little bit of Justin Timberlake … [and] symphonic-sounding.” It wasn’t the only time JT’s name came out of the lips of “Glee” stars on the SAG red carpet. Heather Morris told MTV News, “I think his music might be coming to our show.” After coyly hinting that “maybe” Timberlake’s tunes would be featured, she then indulged fans with the news that, “It’s a mash-up.” Meanwhile, “Glee” actor/dancer Harry Shum Jr. made a plea to Timberlake to come back to the musical forefront. Shum echoed many fans when he said, “It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Justin Timberlake with his music videos, so please, come back Justin. We wanna see some new stuff!” Still, Shum promises that while Timberlake weighs his options, “Glee” can tide his fans over by paying homage to “Justin moves and Justin songs” on their show. Which Glee Cast Members Are in Danger of Being Replaced?

This week Glee creator Ryan Murphy announced that he will be kicking several of his New Directions stars to the curb in 2012 because “there is nothing more depressing than a high schooler with a bald spot.” Well, except for a middle-aged white-rapping teacher who chooses to relive his glory days by dancing suggestively in front of a packed high school auditorium…but I digress. This is a serious threat for not only devoted Gleeks, but for the less talented, more aged actors posing as promgoers. (I’m talking to you, Monteith). Below, Movieline identifies which stars are highest on the endangered Glee -cies list.

‘Glee’ Stars Are All For A Possible Michael Jackson Episode

The stars talk about working songs like ‘Bad’ into an MJ-themed show on the Teen Choice Awards red carpet. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kara Warner Matthew Morrison Photo: MTV News They’ve done Lady Gaga . They’ve covered Madonna . A Britney Spears episode is in the works. One pop star at a time, “Glee” has been putting its cheery spin on the repertoires of some of music’s biggest names. However, many fans are waiting for the “Glee” crew to represent the legacy of one hitmaking luminary in particular: Michael Jackson. Rumors have been swirling that an MJ-themed episode could be headed to TV screens, and several castmembers told MTV News at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday night (August 8) that they would love to take a crack at the King of Pop’s legendary jams. “That would be pretty cool,” Matthew Morrison mused on the red carpet. “He is probably the best and most iconic performer in the history of music,” Morrison declared. Jenna Ushkowitz said taking on Jackson’s music would be a daunting but nonetheless incredible challenge. “That’s a scary, scary episode to do,” the actress said. “[But] that would be absolutely amazing.” “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Adam Shankman has been confirmed to helm an episode of “Glee,” and some reports have suggested that he might be dreaming up choreography for a Jackson tribute. Ushkowitz added that regardless of which episode he takes charge of, the cast is amped to have the director in the fold. “We’re so excited to have Adam Shankman,” she said. “He’s incredible.” With Shankman at the wheel, a dance-heavy Jackson show could be in order. But while Amber Riley said “she would love to do a Michael Jackson episode,” the actress prefers the entertainer’s smoother fare. “My favorite song by him is ‘Human Nature,’ ” Riley said. Harry Shum Jr., who wows “Glee” audiences with his footwork, seemed really excited by the prospect of an episode dedicated to the Gloved One. “That’s so awesome,” Shum said. “You’re part of a show that is paying homage to all these great artists and to be able see your childhood dreams … like, ‘Oh I would love to do that’ [not] just onstage but [also on] this awesome show that gets to showcase these things is great.” Heather Morris said she would love to see how the show flips Jackson’s ultimate tough-guy anthem. “I think it would be super cool to [do] the ‘Bad’ montage,” she said. “Maybe not even in the sense that it’s like the ‘Bad’ video. I’m excited to see what [‘Glee’ creator] Ryan Murphy could do with ‘Bad.’ Whatever they’re gonna do it’s gonna be hysterical.” What would you like to see in a Michael Jackson “Glee” episode? ‘Glee’ Gets Picked Up For Third Season

The hit Fox series gets big vote of confidence before the end of season one. By Jocelyn Vena Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Chris Colfer on “Glee” Photo: FOX As the first season of “Glee” nears its June 8 season finale, Gleeks will be happy to hear that the show will be around for at least another two seasons. On Monday (May 24), it was announced that Fox has picked up the show for a third season. Variety reports that the show will be back for more musical filled laughs and drama for the next two years. “Glee” was the highest-rated show of the new season, following a special launch after the “American Idol” finale last May. In the year it’s been on the air, it has garnered critical acclaim and a rabid fanbase. Ratings continued to thrive in the second half of the season, when the show has aired in the plum post-“Idol” spot. Guest stars have included everyone from Neil Patrick Harris and Olivia Newton-John to Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel, and the show has paid homage to Madonna and, in this week’s episode, Lady Gaga . “I never thought the show would even last,” show creator Ryan Murphy recently said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly . “I just didn’t think people would get it. It truly is a show that the fans think is theirs, that they discovered it.” Murphy remains wary of backlash in the face of his show’s success. “I told [the kids] at the beginning, ‘When you burn hot, there will always be a moment when they turn on you, and then they’ll come back around. You just have to learn how to navigate it,’ ” he told the magazine. “Now you can feel we’ve gone from sort of America’s squeaky-clean sweetheart to ‘Lea Michele snubs photographer!’ Like, really?” What do you hope to see in the season finale of “Glee” next month? ‘Glee’ Recap: Madonna Invades William McKinley High

Sue Sylvester takes center stage during the all-Madonna episode. By Jean Bentley Lea Michele, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz and Chris Colfer in “Glee” Photo: FOX Tuesday’s (April 20) all-Madonna episode of “Glee” imparted an important lesson: Even the almighty Material Girl can be upstaged by the power of Sue Sylvester. From her shot-for-shot remake of Madonna’s “Vogue” music video to her extra-acerbic insults of Will Schuester’s hair, the Cheerios coach was just on. At most high schools, Madonna songs blaring at high volume over the loudspeaker would prove to be a bit distracting. Then again, most schools aren’t William McKinley High, where Sue blackmailed Principal Figgins into playing her idol’s music full blast to inspire the students to be more independent and powerful. (This also, conveniently, allowed as many Madonna songs as possible to be squeezed into the 44-minute episode.) Sue had her Cheerios harness Madge’s power by encouraging them to troll the middle school for younger boyfriends and abandon their last names. She also choreographed a routine to “Ray of Light” involving stilts (not creepy — in fact, amazing) and hurled her greatest one-liner yet: “Sloppy freak-show babies. Somewhere in the English countryside in a stately manor home, Madonna is weeping.” Following Sue’s lead, Will made New Directions brainstorm Madonna numbers in an attempt to empower the female glee clubbers and discourage the guys’ misogynistic tendencies. This brilliant idea struck him when he overheard Rachel asking the female gleeks for hypothetical romantic advice after her new boyfriend tried to get her to do it after a Wiggles concert. (Remember, Rachel and Vocal Adrenaline’s Jesse St. James are secretly dating.) Unfortunately, guidance counselor Emma was no help. As we learned last week, she’s a virgin, too, but she did have some pretty hilarious sex-education brochures. After Rachel’s girl-power-y “Express Yourself,” her duet with Finn on the “Borderline/ Open Your Heart” mash-up, and a clandestine meeting with Jesse in the Steven Sondheim biography section of the library, where he apologized for pressuring her, she decided she would have sex with Jesse after all. But Rachel wasn’t the only character contemplating losing her virginity: Emma took to heart Sue’s quip that she wasn’t powerful enough to have Madonna piped into her office and told Will it was on. Foreplay would start at 7:30 sharp. And Santana decided Finn was the younger, inferior man she needed in order to emulate Madonna. The resulting (and inevitable) “Like a Virgin” extravaganza followed the three couples on their sexual adventures and was perhaps the best “Glee” number yet, as far as integrating the song and choreography into the plot and allowing multiple characters to sing solos. All six shared vocal duties — even Santana! And she sounded great. Still, it turns out that not all the couples went through with the deed. Although she told Finn the next day that she did it, Rachel didn’t actually leave the bathroom, even as Jesse implored her to “Just come out so we can talk. Or sing about it.” Jesse’s solution: transferring to McKinley to prove how much he respected Rachel. Finn, on the other hand, lied and said he didn’t do it when he actually did. Emma chickened out and ran home barefoot. She and Will decided Monday that they’d readdress their sexual chemistry after his divorce was official and she got help for her OCD. Kurt and Mercedes made the Sue Sylvester “Vogue” video as a multimedia presentation for their New Directions Madonna song (it’s almost indescribably amazing), and they were rewarded for their hard work in the form of positions as the Cheerios’ new lead singers, roles they debuted with a cover of the Madonna/ Justin Timberlake duet “4 Minutes.” Closing out the episode was a take on “What It Feels Like for a Girl” from the boys and a show-stopping “Like a Prayer,” complete with gospel choir, from the whole gang. Did the all-Madonna episode live up to its hype? Sound off in the comments!

‘Glee’ Stars Get Help From Madonna, But What About Adam Lambert?

‘I’ve only heard rumors,’ Chris Colfer says of a possible Lambert appearance. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino The cast of “Glee” in the “Power of Madonna” episode Photo: FOX In the “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee” set to air on Tuesday night (April 20), fans will get more than just remixes of favorite pop tunes. The Material Girl herself praised how Mr. Schuester will use her songs to teach his students a little more about themselves, and possibly change the way they interact with each other. Jenna Ushkowitz said that her character Tina will use Madge’s girl-power pop to clear up her relationship with pal and love interest Artie Abrams (played by Kevin McHale). “Well, definitely in the Madonna episode you’ll see [Tina and Artie] interact more, and it’s all about women’s empowerment,” she explained to MTV News at the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. on Saturday. “And how the boys are degrading and disrespectful. Tina will come back and fight back pretty hard, and then the writers have graciously given us the chance to live out our relationship for a while.” Chris Colfer (who plays Kurt Hummel on the show) didn’t shed too much light on the Madonna episode, but did weigh in on the rumors that Adam Lambert may bring his glam-rock voice and style to the show. “He’s a sweetheart,” he said. “I’ve only heard rumors, but I’ve never heard anything discussed with the writers or any of that.” But Colfer was able to speculate a bit on what’s next for his openly gay character. “There’s lots of good Kurt and Burt [Kurt’s father] story lines coming up, and I think next season he’s getting a love interest, so that should be interesting, I believe,” he said. “They don’t tell me anything, but I believe he’ll be a student — but that’s all I really know.” Do you think Adam Lambert should stop by “Glee?” Tell us in the comments!
