Bad Movies We Love: Muppets From Space

Call me a glum frog with a hand flapping up my ass, but I didn’t love The Muppets . Jim Henson’s franchise is about goofy, heartfelt antics, and his whimsy warps into a barrage of Glee tunes, self-conscious dorkiness and perky, perky people under the pen of Jason Segel. It’s a no for me. Luckily, the ’90s already gave us a solid, if stupendously, un -self-consciously dorky Muppets update in the form of Muppets From Space . It’s not exactly a part of the classic Kermit cannon, but that’s because it’s a tangential Henson operation. Think of it as Muppets Origins: Gonzo . Now you’re in.

REVIEW: When Humans Aren’t On-Screen, The Muppets Achieves Pure, Distilled Joy

Can something be considered fan fiction if it’s also an official, canonical studio product? I’m going to argue yes, absolutely, because with The Muppets , Jason Segel has crafted what can only be described as the most extravagant work of fan fiction ever, Mary Sue-ing himself into the Muppet universe as a character who helps reunite the gang in order to save their old theater and the day. Segel, who co-wrote the film with Nicholas Stoller, even leaves his own tentative mark on Jim Henson’s beloved ensemble by inserting a personal addition in the form of alter ego Walter (voiced by Peter Linz), his character’s Muppet brother and the group’s most devoted fan even when the rest of the world seems to have forgotten about them. Fandom can be a precarious thing — someone’s devotion to the source material he or she is adapting to screen can sometimes lead to being too cautious with it, too respectful to do what’s best for the movie instead of only for the hardcore supporters. But the love Segel has for the Muppets is a genuine, perceivable and positive quality that suffuses this good-hearted revitalization of the franchise, and if some wish fulfillment sneaks in there too, it seldom gets in the way of the enjoyment to be had.

Muppets PR Blitz Vamps On with Twilight Parody Posters

We’ve seen enough satirical Muppets promo material to last us through the next hundred Muppet sequels, but I have to hand it to the tireless Disney merchants for their newest gag: a Twilight Saga spoof. The Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog posters are expected, but it’s the third, Lautner-ian one-sheet that left me speechless. The pun is also first-rate.

Fabulous Muppets: The Green Album Raises the Question: What are the Best Muppet Covers?

The wonderful trailers for Jason Segel’s Muppets movie already have me torqued for a reboot of Kermit the Frog’s kingdom, but now consider me extra-amped: This new disc of Muppet cover songs featuring Weezer, OK Go, the Fray, and Rachael Yamagata is so solid and original that I can’t believe an alternative version like it has never been attempted before. You can listen to the whole Green Album online now, but first, think: What are your favorite Muppet covers? And do these live up?

Lady Gaga, Pink, Mariah Carey To Appear On New PETA Billboard

The ad — part of the organization’s ‘Fur-Free and Fabulous’ campaign — will be unveiled Tuesday in L.A. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Sure, Lady Gaga’s infamous “meat dress” may have drawn the ire of PETA, but that hasn’t stopped the animal-rights organization from featuring her — along with fellow icons Pink and Mariah Carey — on a brand-new billboard, set to be unveiled Tuesday in Los Angeles. It’s part of PETA’s “Fur-Free and Fabulous” campaign, and, despite the fallout over her Video Music Awards outfit, Gaga was chosen because, as PETA puts it in a press release, “Her anti-fur stance … has been unwavering.” “Gaga’s out-there outfits never include real fur,” the statement continued. “Last year, when she wore a dress made of fluffy Kermit the Frog dolls, [she] explained, ‘I thought it was commentary on not wearing fur, ’cause I hate fur and don’t wear fur.’ ” PETA also selected Pink and Carey for the billboard — which will be raised on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles — because of their longtime anti-fur stances. Pink, who recently co-starred with comedian Ricky Gervais in PETA’s “Stolen for Fashion” video short, once allegedly called out Beyonc

‘Muppets’ Star Jason Segel ‘Hoping’ For Lady Gaga Cameo

Actor and co-writer weighs in on Michael Cera rumor, 3-D for 2011 movie. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jason Segel Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Will Lady Gaga reunite with Kermit the Frog after their red-carpet dalliance at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards? Will Michael Cera kick it with some felt friends? Will the creative minds behind “The Muppets” give in to the 3-D craze and deliver the first franchise film since 1999 in three dimensions? These are just a few of the questions surrounding Jason Segel’s resurrection of the Muppets in a flick set to hit theaters next November. And while promoting “Gulliver’s Travels” recently, Segel touched on all these Muppet topics and more. “We are hoping to get Lady Gaga, but we hadn’t heard anything yet,” Segel told MTV News of the much talked-about cameo. “I literally don’t know.” We’ll file this bit of casting gossip under “wait and see.” On to the question of Cera. Earlier reports suggested Paul Rudd was being recruited for a cameo, but the actor told us a few weeks ago that it wasn’t going to happen. Cera had been rumored to be up for the same part, and Segel issued something of a non-denial denial about the rumor, going on to explain that the role in question concerns a new Muppet named Walter. “That part was never to play Walter,” Segel said. “The puppeteer who’s playing Walter is called Peter Linz, who’s an absolute genius, amazing puppeteer, brilliant actor and a great singer. There was a bit where Walter imagines himself as a human. All the puppeteers play their characters. There are no celebrity voices of the puppets.” Again, we’ll wait and see on Cera. One thing we most certainly won’t be seeing in “Muppets” is 3-D. Segel, who stars in the film and wrote the script along with Nicholas Stoller (“Get Him to the Greek”), envisions the movie as a throwback to previous series installments like “The Great Muppet Caper.” “No, I don’t think so,” he said of the 3-D question. “Maybe you’ll play this back in a year and see I was wrong. My goal is make it like the 1970s, early ’80s Muppet movies, so I don’t want there to be any 3-D, personally.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Muppets.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kanye West Performs Rousing ‘Lost In The World’ At Thanksgiving Day Parade

Despite appearing to be lip-synching, rapper delivers spirited performance at annual Macy’s event. By Alvin Blanco Kanye West (file) Photo: Ben Hider/Getty Images The Kanye West promo march continues, so naturally the Chicago rapper took his show to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Amidst marching bands and balloon versions of Kermit the Frog, SpongeBob SquarePants and Spider-Man, Yeezy performed a rousing though shortened rendition of “Lost in the World” from his just-released fifth album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. As more than two million people lined the parade route and millions more watched from home, West performed in front of Macy’s flagship location near Manhattan’s Herald Square on 34th Street at around 11:20 a.m. West kicked his verse from “Lost in the World” along with its chorus atop the Big Apple float, which was adorned with a giant apple and a New York taxicab coming out of a tunnel below it. Wearing a long fur vest, leather pants and a gold V-neck shirt, West delivered a spirited performance despite the fact that he appeared to be lip-synching. Interestingly, Matt Lauer was one of the NBC broadcast’s hosts of the parade. Lauer interviewed West during his infamous appearance on the “Today” show that led the rapper to cancel a scheduled performance on the program. West also compared Lauer to a child abuser during a speech at his not-so-secret show at New York’s Bowery Ballroom on Tuesday night. Nevertheless, it was Lauer who introduced West. Other performers at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade included the casts of the Broadway musicals “Memphis” and “Elf,” Jimmy Fallon with the Roots, folk singer Arlo Guthrie and Keri Hilson, who performed on the My Princess Academy float.
