The next time you’re in a traffic jam, buy a lottery ticket so you can be ballin’ too. Man Wins $5 Million After Buying Lottery Ticket To Pass The Time Most people would be glad to win $1 million…and this guy walked away with 5. According to AOL: Everyone hates traffic jams, but last December, one man hated them so much he made a spur-of-the-moment decision to buy some lottery tickets to pass the time until traffic was clear. One of those tickets ended up being a winner, and now Thomas Mainella will be adding an extra $5 million to his bank account. He and his fiancée sat down with “Fox & Friends” to talk about the moment he won. ‘I scratched that and it said ‘life’ and I just went ‘I’m a freaking winner!’ It’s like ‘yay, yay, I’m a winner!’ And the people in the store are like ‘what? What?’ And I go ‘I freaking won!” ‘I’ve always told people I’m going to win big on this game. They all thought I was crazy.’ Mainella’s life is really going to change, as he has decided to accept his winnings in annual payments of $172,000. He told “Fox & Friends” he plans to use the money to pay off some debt and to give Donna’s daughter a much grander wedding than was planned. Some people have all the luck! Must be nice. Shutterstock

Elisabeth Hasselbeck is on her way out of The View . Forget the show of support from Barbara Walters last week, an insider tells The New York Post that this blonde conservative will not return to the talk show once her contract is up. “ABC is desperate to freshen the show,” a source tells the newspaper. “Ratings are going soft, and research numbers on the stars’ likability are scaring network execs.” The newspaper adds that Joy Behar was forced to resign , although producers agreed to let her exit gracefully. But once news leaked of Hasselbeck’s upcoming dismissal, Walters was “spitting mad” and called it off. Still, her announcement will simply delay the inevitable. Hasselbeck may be coaxed to leave before her deal is even up next year, the article alleges “because the ABC brass believes the show needs to be younged-up fast.” Among those under consideration to takeover? Brooke Shields, Christie Brinkley and Ali Wentworth. Expect a drawn-out testing process for each potential co-host. If she really is leaving, will you miss Elisabeth Hasselbeck on The View? Yes, definitely! No, good riddance! View Poll »

Convenience-store owners in Maine are reportedly concerned that the state lottery wants to re-name and re-brand its scratch-off lottery tickets as “Kwikies.” “That’s going to be real uncomfortable for my girls behind the register to have guys come in and say, ‘Hey, give me a Kwikie,’” one store owner said. “It’s highly inappropriate,” Kaylee Constable, one of his employees, added. “[Customers] come in and joke around with me and say, ‘Can I get a Kwikie?” “I’m only 19, and I have 40- and 50-year-old men saying sexual remarks to me.” The Bangor Daily News provided some helpful context: “In slang terms, a quickie is a short sexual encounter.” But state lottery officials say the origin of the new name has nothing to do with sex, but rather, “the benefit of buying this ticket is that it’s quick, easy and fun.” “That’s what an instant ticket is.”

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton was arrested on charges of DUI this morning, with new details pertaining to the incident making it even more embarrassing for the hitting star. According to the Thornton Police Department, the 39-year old was found stumbling out of a gas station, breath full of alcohol and lottery tickets in hand . Yes, lottery tickets. For a guy who once signed a $141.5 million contract. Helton “made spontaneous statements about drinking two igloo cups of red wine,” police say, and was booked on three counts of drunk driving. To the ball player’s credit, he was “respectful and professional” throughout the ordeal, authorities conclude.

Dayyuuummmmm. Somebody done came all the way up!! The winning ticket for Friday night’s $319 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot was sold at Coulson’s News Center, just blocks from the New York Capitol building, a lottery official announced. The phone rang non-stop Saturday morning, and a steady stream of customers passed through the newsstand and magazine shop to get coffee, the daily paper and, of course, lottery tickets, as word spread that the store sold the fifth-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history. It seems every few weeks a new story hits the headlines exposing a politician for some misstep in his personal life that contradicts the “family values” campaign on which he was elected. Perplexed by these double standards, a team of professors from the Netherlands and Illinois conducted a series of five experiments and found that when everyday people are put into positions of power, they are prone to increased moral hypocrisy. The five experiments the professors devised ran through different morality-testing scenarios such as stealing a bicycle and evading taxes. Each scenario led to a common conclusion: while leaders hold their followers to high standards, they are not nearly as strict when it comes to their own personal behavior. The participants assigned the most powerful status indicated they would look down on others the most for fudging numbers for financial gain. Participants were told that for helping with the experiment, they could enter a lottery to win a prize. Participants privately rolled dice to determine the number of lottery tickets they would win (more tickets, more chances to win). The high-power participants also won the highest number of lottery tickets, indicating that they in fact cheated to gain more lottery tickets. Meaning the high-power participants judged others harshly for cheating, and then turned around and cheated themselves. Another interesting result came from fifth experiment in the research study, wherein the subjects indicated their own power status as well as whether they deserved this position of power. The powerful individuals who genuinely believed they earned their status by far exhibited the most moral hypocrisy. Psychology Today offers two possible explanations for this phenomenon. First, leaders can “delude themselves that they are working for the greater good” and consequently make exceptions for themselves. Second, politicians recognize that they are able to get away with misdeeds, so they opt to take advantage of their position’s privileges. Fear of losing power could be the key to keeping the powerful honest. The researchers found the only way to force a person of power to be honest was if “if the powerful sense that their unrestrained self-enrichment leads to gossiping, derision, and the undermining of their reputation.” Why are people more likely to cut themselves some slack when they are in a leadership position? Perhaps, nothing reminds your ego how powerful you are than when you break the rules.
