So You Think You Can Dance: Down to 20!

So You Think You Can Dance is down to its final 20. How did it arrive at that number? Read on for a review of last night’s two-hour episode… The Contemporary Dancers – Ricky, Miranda, and Melanie ended up as finalists. Of the three I loved Miranda’s face when Nigel said “bad news” and how quickly she changed when she found out she was in. The fourth space was filled by one of the Mallory sisters. Sasha (the skinny one) was in, but Natalia (the diabetic) was cut, yet remained supportive. Stacey Tookey Contemporary Routine – I’m usually upset when they use dry ice in performances, but there were enough leaps and the smoke moved around well with the dancers’ turns. I’m not sure what the story was, but the performance covered some good area. I assume that all four dancers were supposed to be as lost as the song exclaimed, but it was mostly flowing ripped clothing looking pretty. The Hip-Hop Dancers – With seven hip-hop dancers left and no females (because Hero, Patty Anne and Princess Lockaroo) got cut too early, the male contestants took all the glory. Chris made it through, after auditioning last season and having to dance for his life during the jive. Joining him were Wadi, Tadd, and Robert “Wooo” Taylor Jr. Sadly, we lost the vertically challenged Lil’ O and Professor “Indubitably” Lot. Dave Scott Hip-Hop Routine – The routine was a bit simple looking in the group choreography and the people didn’t look that synchronized. When the contestants got moments to have their solos, they shined. I worry for all four when they get paired up with a contemporary girl and give a ballroom routine. The Ballroom Dancers – It was a tough season for the ballroom dancers. Ivetta and Lenny were the only two left. Lenny was the only male ballroom dancer and he was probably confident that since he was the only male ballroom contestant he’d slide right through. Sadly, he was cut. Ivetta was the only hope and would have been her last chance to be on the show because of her age. She finally made it through. Jason Gilkinson Latin Routine – Since Ivetta was the sole Ballroom dancer, she was paired up with All-Star Pasha. I love a good Paso Doble and I was blown away. Not many of the dancers could stand next to Pasha outside of Anya (his partner) but Ivetta was the center of the dance. She flowed so elegantly and her toned legs looked amazing. The Contemporary/Jazz Dancers – Because this show can’t admit that it has just a whole ton of contemporary dancers, it uses the phrase “Jazz” as if makes a difference. I would have placed Sasha Mallory more in Jazz. We welcomed Clarisse and Marko. As for the naughty, female dancers, both Jordan and Missy made it in. Sonya Tayeh Jazz Routine – I missed Sonya’s choreography; it had that jazz spirit and the edginess. It seemed like Marko had a bit of an issue with a few of the lifts and I wasn’t sure it was because of the bullet in his arm or the fact that one of the girls looked heavier than the others. The “Other Male” Category – Jess and Nick were the lone representatives of Broadway and Tap, respectively. Jess was called out for being a bit cocky and a little uncomfortable in some of the other genres. Luckily for Nick, there was space for him as well. I guess with no Ballroom dancer, it was easier to say yes to the tapper. Christopher Scott Tap Routine – I’ve seen the “Rich Guy/Poor Guy” routines a lot before and the biggest issue I had was that the camera focused on only one dancer at a time in the beginning half of the performance. I was quite happy to see Jess doing some tap when I don’t think we were told he had any knowledge (Nigel hinted that four girls also knew Tap so we could actually see a tap routine during the competition). The Final Five Dancers – The judges were looking for three girls and two guys to fill in the spots. Caitlyn, who had star quality, was easily in. She was quickly followed by Ashley. Mitchell was nervous in front of the judges but was in. The final two girls were Ryan and Alexa; the two looked and acted like fake blonde twins. Alexander and Jeremiah were the last two males. Though both Jeremiah and Ryan were repeat contestants we followed last episode, Ryan was the only one to make it through. The final two were Alexander and Ryan. How do you feel about the top 20?

The Case For Mark Pellington’s Sundance Offender I Melt With You

The mass walkouts were the first indication that Mark Pellington’s I Melt with You was heading for a rocky Sundance reception; even critics who’d made it through couldn’t wait to spill out into the hallways and let the vitriol fly. I Melt with You was, effectively, the first hands-down bomb of the festival. But does Pellington’s midlife-crisis male-bonding thriller — which was picked up today by Magnolia Pictures — deserve all the flack?

‘American Idol’ Exec Producer ‘Pleased’ With 15-Year-Old Contestants

‘They were mature, sang brilliantly and were just grateful for the opportunity of being allowed in the room,’ Nigel Lythgoe tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Nigel Lythgoe Photo: MTV News On Wednesday night’s premiere of “American Idol” ‘s , 10th — and, some say, most important — season, viewers not only got their first glimpse of new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez , but also some of the show’s much-discussed new rules too. Like, for example, the newly lowered age requirement, which, for the first time, allows 15-year-olds to audition. And on last night’s show, it gave us hopefuls like the perky Kenzie Palmer, who made it through to Hollywood (thanks in no small part to Lopez). Of course, Palmer’s success was what the “Idol” team probably had in mind when they instigated the change — but, as executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told MTV News, things haven’t necessarily worked out according to plan. “I think that the one change that I’m most excited about is opening it up to 15-year-olds. And when I heard about it, I wasn’t too happy about it, because I thought, ‘We’re going to get a bunch of immature kids come in and cry their eyes out when they’re kicked out,’ ” he said. “And whereas I was partly right, the majority of the kids were absolutely fabulous, and you’d never guess they were 15. They were mature, sang brilliantly and were just grateful for the opportunity of being allowed in the room.” And, much like Palmer, there’s still plenty of those 15-year-olds who are making noise on the show. “[I’m] very pleased with them,” he said, “and quite a few of them are still there.” Are you excited or wary of the lowered age requirement? T.I. ‘Sick And Tired’ Of Being In And Out Of Prison

‘This experience is truly a pain I have never felt before,’ rapper says in new prison-penned letter. By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. Photo: Shareif Ziyadat/ FilmMagic T.I.’s latest prison bid is apparently changing the MC’s perspective on getting locked up. Tip was hauled back to jail earlier this month to kick off his second stint behind bars in a year after he violated his probation by getting arrested on a drug charge in Los Angeles in September. In a message posted on the Atlanta spitter’s website Thursday (November 18), the trap star, who has a litany of arrests and periods of incarceration that pre-date his chart-busting hip-hop career, described his current prison bid as a turning point in his history with the penal system. “This experience is truly a pain I have never felt before and that’s saying a lot for a n—a who’s been down locked up as many times as I have,” Tip wrote. “I see this as a real ass whoopin’. The kind you don’t just go back outside to play afterwards. You take ya ass to bed and don’t come out of your room until it’s time to go to school.” T.I. also said that switching between life as a free man and an inmate was getting old. “I don’t know what effect this will have on my life moving forward but I’m certainly sick and mother f—ing tired of going to jail, juve, prison, the pen, correctional facilities or whatever else you want to call it,” he said. “I’d have been better off doing a 5-10 year bid one time than going in time and time again for days, weeks and months for the last 15 years of my life.” Even though his legal run-ins have “been a long road,” T.I. maintained that “I’m still standing, barely, but nevertheless still standing.” He also said that instead of looking to others for inspiration and encouragement, he’s going to turn inward for a sense of purpose. “At one time I thought my motivation for continuing was for my fans, my partna Philant, my pops, my grandmama, even for the haters or the people I let down. But nah… I got to do this sh– for me!!!” he said. “I’ll be God damned if I’ve come all this way and made it through so much hell to let it go down like this! F— that! If an hour in the dark is worth a second in the sun then pass me my mother—-in’ shades cause I’m ready to cash my darkest hours in…ASAP!!!” The MC reflected on his lack of a consistent and positive father figure in his life as a factor in his development as a young man, saying, “My mother and grandparents did the best they could but I found my manhood in the trap and in prison systems.” The “Get Back Up” MC then promised that his children won’t follow in his footsteps as a felon. “[None] of mine will ever have to feel the cold tight grip of a handcuff or grace the presence of a jail cell if I can help it,” he wrote. “Over my dead body! So if you can’t respect that you ain’t rocking with my movement, then f— you dog!” T.I.’s album No Mercy is slated to hit shelves December 7. What do you think about T.I.’s latest letter? Jeremy London "Will Do Whatever It Takes to Stay Sober"

In one of the strangest celebrity gossip stories of the year, actor Jeremy London claimed last month that he was kidnapped at gunpoint and forced to do drugs . The tale seemed hard to believe, literally, as London’s own family expressed public doubts over its validity and said the former Party of Five star needs help for a substance abuse problem. While London insists the incident took place , he admits in a new interview that he struggles to remain sober. Asked if he’s been clean over the last couple months: “I have had a few drinks here and there. I haven’t been perfect. I’ve been horribly depressed… I’ve slipped and I’ve taken a couple painkillers a couple times.” Continued the actor: “Being an addict sucks, it’s a disease and it’s a day-to-day struggle no matter what. But I’m doing great. I’m sober. This [kidnapping] is absolutely something that could cause someone to fall off the wagon…and I’ve been able to stay sober through it. So that’s a big test to me. I’ve proven that I can do it.” And he has the best possible reason for doing so: a son. “He’s the light of my life, I wouldn’t have made it through this without my son. I’m going to do whatever it takes to stay sober.”
