Wake-Up Call To Democrats: ‘Black Women Get Things Done’

Read the original post:

A progressive organization wants to send a message to the Democratic Party and other liberal groups in the wake of last week’s midterm election victories: Place Black women in leadership positions. See Also: Blue Party: Say Hello To The Black Wave African-American women have been the backbone of the party and the progressive movement, yet Democrats have been selective in rallying around some Black women candidates while giving little support to others. To add insult to injury, Black women are all too often overlooked for leadership roles in the movement. Enter Yvette Simpson , who was named CEO of Democracy for America ( DFA ) on Wednesday and is poised to take the political action committee’s reigns on Jan. 1, when she will become the first woman to lead the organization. Simpson said she was on a mission to change the value that Democrats and progressives see in Black women. “My being in this role is a big deal,” Simpson told NewsOne on Wednesday. “For the first time the progressive movement is putting a Black woman at the helm of a traditionally white-led organization. I hope it sends a strong signal to the Democratic Party, the progressive movement and our nation. We know that our country is becoming more Black and Brown, and we need to have that representation.” Yvette Simpson takes helm of Democracy For America, Howard Dean's thing. pic.twitter.com/tjsg3HiRoI — Chris King (@chriskingstl) November 14, 2018 With a membership roll that exceeds one million regular donors and volunteers, DFA has a wide focus on progressive issues such as eliminating income inequality, dismantling structural racism and funding candidates of color. It launched in 2004 under the leadership of former Vermont governor and Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean . “After an election year defined by historic firsts and the profound impact women of color played in delivering them, I couldn’t be more excited about Democracy for America’s future with Yvette Simpson as its new chief executive,” DFA chair Jim Dean , the brother of Howard Dean, said in a statement. Black women candidates, like Ayanna Pressley , are part of the 2019 freshman class in Congress who received no support from Democrats. The party opposed the progressive candidate during her historic run to become the first Black woman to represent Massachusetts in Congress. Even the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee backed her rival , incumbent Rep. Michael Capuano , in their primary race. “We went out and supported Ayanna Pressley from the start saying she is the right choice for this district,” said Simpson, who served as DFA’s federal electoral manager for the 2018 midterms. Simpson, a former Cincinnati City Council member who had an unsuccessful bid for mayor last year, said she planned to focus on recruiting and supporting candidates of color for the 2019 and 2020 elections. “You’re going to see us on the ground and partnering with (Black) organizations like the Collective PAC , Color of Change , Higher Heights to make sure we are finding the best candidates, candidates that represent the new American majority, Black and brown people, women, progressives, and make sure we give them the support they need to win,” she said with great anticipation of things to come. With a Black woman leading DFA, the organization will be able to build bridges to minority communities more effectively, she predicted that her crusade for the Democrats and the progressive movement to be more inclusive. “You and I both know that Black women get things done,” she declared. Wake-Up Call To Democrats: ‘Black Women Get Things Done’

Holy $hit! This is the Most Violent Play in Sports History!

Good news, Zaza Pachulia. You are no longer the dirtiest person playing basketball these days. Not by a long shot. Not after what transpired on Tuesday night in a game between Division III teams Fitchburg State and Nichols. The schools were playing in Massachusetts and everything was going along as it normally does during the course of a basketball game when Nichols guard Nate Tenaglia received a pass in the corner. He was open, so he fired off a three-pointer. Just as he releases the ball, however, Fitchburg junior guard Kewan Platt comes flying out of nowhere and DRILLS Tenaglia. We're not just talking about some kind of regular hard foul, either. We're talking about a flat-out punch to the face, something that lands far outside the realm of a basketball play and into the realm of… illegal activity? Yes, many on social media (including Michael Rapaport) are calling for Platt to be arrested. Watch the video here and you'll immediately see where these folks are coming from. Tenaglia was able to return to the game and is reportedly doing fine. But Fitchburg State has suspended Platt and barred him from campus for an unspecified amount of time. It has also released this statement: “The Fitchburg State community is appalled by the conduct displayed during Tuesday night’s home basketball game. “His behavior is antithetical to our community values and good sportsmanship. Fitchburg State does not tolerate behavior that violates those standards. “The case is being reviewed at the student conduct level for consideration of further sanctions.” We don't even have a joke to conclude with here. This foul is just flat out insane. Watch it for yourself now.

Ayanna Pressley Becomes First Black Woman To Represent Massachusetts In Congress

Read the rest here:

A yanna Pressley on Tuesday night officially became the first Black women to represent Massachusetts in Congress after officials confirmed her inevitable victory. The Democrat ran unchallenged in the general election after she unseated the incumbent, 10-term Rep. Michael Capuano, in a seemingly improbable upset that was all part of a larger “Blue wave” of Black women candidates winning primaries across the country. #BREAKING : Democrat Ayanna Pressley is projected to win in Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, becoming the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress in state history. https://t.co/aEbQQMVVRY pic.twitter.com/OMj07Vx4RW — NPR Politics (@nprpolitics) November 7, 2018 Pressley, who was set to take over the Seventh Congressional District, told NewsOne shortly before her landmark victory in September that her years serving on the Boston City Council as its first African-American woman prepared her for this moment. She was especially nonplussed by how the Democratic Party hadn’t been rallying around her. “I was not surprised, mostly because I knew what I was embarking upon, that this would likely be a lonely, uphill, and bruising journey,” Pressley said at the time . “We’re doing something disruptive, challenging conventional wisdom, narratives and norms about who has a right to run, when you can run, and whether or not you can win.” Pressley was now on the precipice of stepping into the same congressional seat once occupied by John F. Kennedy ahead of his run for president in the 1960s. Providing some much needed political perspective in the era of Donald Trump, Pressley told the New York Times that she was cautiously optimistic for the future. “With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege, it’s not just good enough to see the Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are,” she said. “Change isn’t waiting any longer. We have arrived, change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.” SEE ALSO: The Power Of The Black Vote And How To Make Each One Count Stacey Abrams’ Unapologetically Black Journey To The Doorstep Of History [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835357″ overlay=”true”]

Campaigns Make Final Election Day Push As Celebrities Rally Voters

C candidates were making their final pushes on Election Day eve to turn out the vote, with celebrities expected to help make the case to Floridians. In one of the most widely watched races in the nation, music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs was expected to lead a rally Monday night at Florida A&M University for Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum . See Also: Political Races To Watch In 2018 Midterm Elections Featuring Black Candidates “I am so proud to endorse Andrew Gillum, who will become the first Black governor of Florida,” Combs said in a video, underscoring that he’s not endorsing Gillum because he’s Black. “He’s running a campaign for the people. I’ve spoken to him at length. I believe in him — his focus, his ideas, what he stands for.” Diddy was scheduled to be joined by several other stars, including Tiffany Haddish  and Will Packer. Gillum continued to hold on to a slim lead in the polls, according to the NBC News/Marist survey released Monday. The Tallahassee mayor had an edge of four percentage points over former Rep. Ron DeSantis  , a Republican who has the full endorsement of President Donald Trump . Meanwhile, in Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams reiterated her dismissal of rival Brian Kemp ’s unsubstantiated claim that state Democrats may have hacked into computers that hold voter registration data. It was another example of Georgia Secretary of State Kemp’s “pattern of voter suppression,” she told “CBS This Morning” on Monday. Abrams, who could become the nation’s first African-American governor, planned to spend part of Monday campaigning in southwestern Georgia. Several high-profile politicians and celebrities have campaigned for Abrams, including former President Barack Obama, media legend Oprah Winfrey and rapper Common. Oprah rallied a crowd of Stacey Abrams' supporters. That was the case for Antonio Delgado . Honored and truly humbled to receive an endorsement from @BarackObama . He stands for so many of the values that we hold as our foundation – preserving and improving our democracy, a commitment to service, hard work, and the promotion of dignity and respect for everyone. https://t.co/n2i0xGrjKO — Antonio Delgado (@DelgadoforNY19) August 1, 2018 In one key race for Democrats, congressional candidate Antonio Delgado planned to send out more troops to knock on doors and make massive numbers of phone calls on Monday. This team knocked on 62,000 doors and made 100,000 phone calls on Sunday, with plans to repeat that effort on Election Eve. Delgado is part of the blue wave that Democrats hope will help them retake the House of Representatives. Republican John Faso currently holds New York’s 19th Congressional District seat, but Democrats believe they have a good chance to swing the district, which is 90 percent white, over to their side. Recent polls showed Delgado and Faso in a statistical tie. Yesterday we knocked on over 62,000 doors and we are heading out to hit even more!! Thank you so much to everyone out there helping to get out the vote. Let’s go!! #NY19 pic.twitter.com/lrSOcF46XD — Antonio Delgado (@DelgadoforNY19) November 4, 2018 On the eve of what the Washington Post said could be “the most important election of our lifetime,” several other Black candidates were making last-minute campaign moves to do their share to help sweep Republicans out of office. They included  Ayanna Pressely  in Massachusetts;  Lucy McBath  of Georgia; Vangie Williams of Virginia;  Mandela Barnes  of Wisconsin; and Jahana Hayes  of Connecticut. Most of the candidates were competitive in their races, according to the polls . SEE ALSO: Brian Kemp’s Latest Move Shows His ‘Desperation,’ Stacey Abrams Says Make Massa Happy! Ciara Sivels Becomes First Black Woman To Earn Nuclear Engineering Ph.D. From University Of Michigan

B lack women are raising the bar in the realm of academia. In July, Miami native Mareena Robinson Snowden became the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and now another woman has hit the same milestone at another institution. According to the Huffington Post , Ciara Sivels has become the first African-American woman to earn a nuclear engineering Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Dr. Ciara Sivels is 27 years old. https://t.co/tZXmP1JdoS — HuffPost BlackVoices (@blackvoices) November 2, 2018 The institution has one of the top nuclear engineering programs in the country, the news outlet writes. 27-year-old Sivels—who hails from Virginia—submitted her thesis titled “Development of an Advanced Radioxenon Detector for Nuclear Explosion Monitoring” last month and earned her doctorate degree. Sivels wasn’t always passionate about STEM. She initially wanted to pursue a career in the culinary industry. It was her high school chemistry teacher who convinced her to give STEM a try. “I was originally going to go to culinary school. In my junior and senior years, I was in culinary arts,” she told the news outlet. “I remember the teacher from that class saying, ‘Oh, you’re really smart, you should think about doing something other than culinary.’ So that’s kinda how I switched over into engineering and eventually ended up at MIT and ended up in the nuclear program.” Sivels’ academic journey was far from easy. Although at times she wanted to give up she decided to stay the course because she realized that what she was working towards was something that was bigger than her. Now that she has her Ph.D. under her belt, Sivels is focused on becoming a professor. She’s relocating to Baltimore and will work in Johns Hopkins University’s physics department. She believes in the power of representation and hopes that her journey will inspire other people of color to pursue careers in STEM. “My two big things are representation and exposure. I still feel like exposure is key and representation also helps, because you have people that look like you that can help pull you up when you’re failing,” she said. Sivels’ accomplishment is one step forward towards changing the narrative about Black women in STEM. According to Catalyst Inc. , Black, Latinx, and Asian women made up less than 10 percent of engineers and scientists in 2015. Trump’s Racist Ad Aims For The Willie Horton Effect, Explained

H istory was repeating itself with the release of President Donald Trump ’s new dog-whistling political ad days before the crucial Midterm elections. It was reminiscent of the Republicans’ infamous Willie Horton spot that exploited white fear of Black men ahead of the 1988 presidential election. See Also: Republicans Are Using Every Racist Stereotype Imaginable For The Midterm Elections Most of the nation learned about Horton from a 53-second ad intended to send white voters flocking to the polls to vote for then-Vice President George H.W. Bush  in theoretical exchange for protection from the alleged hoards of Black criminals. Horton was a convicted murderer who raped a white woman while out of prison under a weekend furlough program. With the debut of his new ad, the president was clearly taking a page from that racist playbook. He tweeted a video on Wednesday that blamed Democrats for allowing an undocumented Mexican immigrant for killing two California deputies and warns that liberals would allow hoards of Hispanic migrants into the country. The video showed deputies removing Luis Bracamontes from a courtroom in February because of his outbursts about killing more cops, during his sentencing. “Illegal immigrant, Luis Bracamontes , killed our people!” reads the opening text of the ad. “Democrats let him stay.” It is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our Country. Vote Republican now! https://t.co/0pWiwCHGbh pic.twitter.com/2crea9HF7G — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 31, 2018 The parallels between each commercial were unavoidable. They are tied together by their blatant use of racism to exploit white fear of Black and brown people. Trump blamed the Democrats for Bracamontes’ crime, and the Horton ad pinned the blame to Bush’s Democratic opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis . Both ads also tell big lies. Massachusetts was not the only state with a furlough program. More than 40 states had similar programs, the Washington Post pointed out in 1988 article. The federal government also had a furlough program in the 1980s. Then-governor Michael Dukakis had supported the prison furlough program, and when he ran for President in 1988, his opponent, George H. W. Bush, used that to his advantage. Bush used America’s racism and fear of Black men to fuel his presidential campaign. pic.twitter.com/wZYfoiERLS — Frederick Joseph (@FredTJoseph) November 1, 2018 Trump was trying to build a case on his false claim that migrants at the nation’s southern border are more likely to enter the country illegally under Democratic rule. The fact is that Trump has deported  fewer undocumented immigrants than President Barack Obama did. The difference is that the Obama administration focused on deporting violent criminals and those who posed a national security threat , while Trump has seemed more interested in sending a message by breaking up families regardless of whether a violent crime was committed. SMH: Texas Christian University Student Accused Of Hazing Found Dead On Campus From Apparent Suicide

Ron T. Ennis/Fort Worth Star-Telegram/MCT via Getty Images TCU Student Found Dead After Being Accused Of Hazing A Texas Christian University student who had been accused of hazing has reportedly committed suicide. Officials found 19-year-old Andrew Walker of Westford, Massachusetts dead on the ground after he appeared to have jumped from the fourth floor of an apartment complex on the TCU campus. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner reported that the student appeared to have committed suicide and died from “blunt force trauma from a fall,” Fox News  reported . Before this incident, police arrested Walker, along with another student named Christopher Thorne Barksdale, last month on charges of hazing students in the Kappa Sigma fraternity. A pledge was taken to a local hospital after being forced to drink large quantities of alcohol in the process. TCU officials suspended the fraternity following the incident. In addition to the hazing charge, Walker also faced a court appearance later this month for a DWI arrest, according to reports from the  Dallas Morning News . University officials commented on the incident in a written statement, saying the following: “Texas Christian University is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students, Andrew Walker. We are a small campus community and a death among our Horned Frog family wounds us all. We send our heartfelt thoughts, prayers and condolences to the family in this difficult time. Counselors and university ministers stand ready to assist students, faculty and staff who need support in the days and weeks ahead.”

America’s Got Talent Season 13: Did the Right Contestant Win?

A magician never reveals his tricks. But a magician has now revealed what it feels like to be crowned the winner of America’s Got Talent… … because Shin Lim took home that honor on Wednesday night. With 10 finalists battling it out on stage until the final vote, Season 13 came down to Lim and singing group Zurcaroh, with the self-taught 26-year old eventually coming out on top. Much to his own complete shock. “I can’t speak right now,” Lim said after he was named the champion and tackled his fellow finalists. They all picked him up and put them on their shoulders after the announcement was made. “When you told me at 16 that an awkward, shy kid would one day be performing at the Dolby Theatre performing on America’s Got Talent, I wouldn’t have believed them,” he added. “To compete on AGT, it means the world to me.” The very impressive magician not only took home the $1 million prize — but will also headline the America’s Got Talent Live stage at the Paris Theater in Las Vegas from November 2-4. Lim’s parents hail from Singapore. He was born in Canada and currently lives in Acton, Massachusetts and he blew viewers away through sleight of hand magic and close-up tricks. For his finale, Lim performed a card trick with host Tyra Banks and American Ninja Warrior co-hosts Matt Iseman and Akbar Gbaja-Biamila. At various points in the competition, Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell called Lim “the best close-up magician they have ever seen.” (He’s second magician to win America’s Got Talent, following Mat Franco on Season 9.) At age 20, four years after the started to learn the art of magic, Lim was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. This forced him to gave up his piano career, as he dropped out of the School of Music at Lee University in Tennessee and put all his time and effort into his aspiring magic career. After perfecting a number of tricks simply by studying YouTube videos, Lim appeared twice on Penn Jillette and Teller’s magic competition show, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, in 2015 and 2017. He also took his talents overseas, including gigs in Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, and Taiwan. After his victory, Lim said he took Cowell’s advice to heart and moved away from the card table to make his show appear even bigger and more dazzling. He’s thankful to the judge for offering up this tidbit and pushing him toward the grand prize. “I learned so much going away from the table. It’s harder because it’s something I’m uncomfortable with. So, I really feel like I now have the confidence to build on it,” he said. The finale performance “was my way of growing as a magician, and I think I’m going to follow that path of getting bigger and having a full show.” Congratulations to Shin Lim! Do you think he deserved to win?  Or do you remain shocked that singer Courtney Hadwin didn’t go all the way?

The decision comes after the demand for soldiers has been on the rise. For this fiscal year, the Army has a challenging task of recruiting 80,000 new soldiers all while complying with the Defense Department’s regulations. Last year, there were 191 waivers granted and this year that number significantly increased to over 500. The implementation of this plan seems to be working in the military’s favor. According to the news outlet, the Army enlisted 6,000 more recruits than they did in 2016. “Provided they understand that they cannot do that when they serve in the military, I will waive that all day long,” Maj. Gen. Jeff Snow , head of the Army’s recruiting command, said in a statement according to the source. He also added that as states continue to make marijuana use legal, he expects the number of waivers to rise. Those who head up recruitment in the Army have been trying to explore different ways to recruit individuals who fall under “category four” which means they scored low on their aptitude test. Those who are classified in that category are barred from enlisting if they have any type of history with marijuana and they can’t request any waivers for other reasons. Snow says that the Army plans on maintaining its standards but will continue to find pathways for more people to enlist to increase the number of members. “The big thing we’re looking for is a pattern of misconduct where they’re going to have a problem with authority,” Snow told USA Today . “Smoking marijuana in an isolated incident as a teenager is not a pattern of misconduct.” Some critics call the increase in marijuana waivers worrisome since years ago the military ran into issues when recruits with criminal records were hurriedly enrolled in the military to meet a high demand for members during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Marijuana is currently legal in Colorado, Maryland, Washington, Oregon, California, Massachusetts, and Maine. Several other states throughout the country have lowered the penalties for possession of marijuana.
