Justin Bieber: ‘I Can’t Not Dance Battle Usher’

Bieber’s mentor and dance-off foe will debut his new track ‘Twisted’ on ‘MTV First: Usher,’ airing tonight at 7:54 p.m. on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Justin Bieber Photo: Valery Hache/ AFP/ Getty Images Justin Bieber and his mentor, Usher , believe it or not, have engaged in a dance-off or two. While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves. “Dance-offs? We had one the other night. He did this little show in New York,” Bieber explained to MTV News earlier this month about facing off against Usher during his stint in the off-Broadway “Fuerza Bruta” in April . “Mid-show, he comes in the middle of the dance floor and does a dance battle with me. And I’m like ‘I’m too tired for this.’ He pulls out moves and I can’t not dance battle Usher. “So I go in there, do my whole thing,” he recalled. “I’m pretty sure I lost, but it’s all good.” When they aren’t battling it out on the dance floor, it seems Usher is offering up some sage advice to the 18-year-old singer. “He’s just given me the advice of ‘Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,’ ” he said. “I think that’s probably pretty much the main thing he’s always told me.” Usher has even more to share about working with his superstar mentee. He will open up during “MTV First: Usher,” set to take place tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. He will introduce exclusive footage from “Fuerza Bruta” and his new single, the Pharrell-produced “Twisted,” and will stick around for an interview with MTV News’ Sway Calloway to discuss it all, including his new June release, Looking 4 Myself , on MTV.com afterward. Fans can submit questions via MTV.com or Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskUsher. Don’t miss “MTV First: Usher” tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an interview with the singer on MTV.com! Related Videos Get Ready For ‘MTV First: Usher’! ‘The Voice’ Winner Jermaine Paul Wants To Reunite With Alicia Keys

‘We’ve been working on a song for a while now,’ he tells MTV News of Keys, while also gushing about mentor Blake Shelton. By Christina Garibaldi Jermaine Paul Photo: MTV News It’s been a week since Jermaine Paul won the second season of “The Voice,” beating out Juliet Simms to take the title for Team Blake, but the former Alicia Keys backup singer still can’t believe all that has happened to him in such a short amount of time. Paul stopped by MTV News on Monday and reflected on the moment they announced his name as the winner and how his coach, and friend, Blake Shelton was able to bring him back to reality. “I was going through a whole emotional, mental shock, and I even physically thought my legs weren’t under me, I had my hands on my head,” Paul said. “I had this crazy tingling sensations like going through my head — it’s a feeling I can’t even explain — and he brought me back to reality and grabbed me and was like, ‘You did it, man! It’s you!’ It was an amazing feeling.” Many were surprised when Paul chose Shelton to be his mentor in the beginning of the season, given that he’s an R&B artist, while Blake is a country star. But much like Shelton and fellow coach Adam Levine , Paul developed his own “bromance” with his mentor. “He’s a good guy, he’s a man’s man, he’s a what-you-see-is-what-you-get type of guy, and that’s the kind of guy I try to be,” Paul said. “That was ultimately one of the main reasons I chose him as my coach. I just felt his sincerity, the realness. He jokes around a lot, you know? When he walks in the room, he definitely has a way of lighting up the air.” Another huge supporter of Paul’s is his former boss, Alicia Keys. Paul revealed that the superstar singer was always advocating for him to begin his own solo career. “She’s always been supportive. Even while I was singing, I would tell her, ‘I want to go solo,’ and she was like, ‘What are you waiting on?’ and I would tell her, ‘I’m waiting on God to fix things out,’ and she was like, ‘Maybe God is waiting on you.’ ” Clearly, Keys’ advice has paid off for Paul, who is hoping to release a track with her on his future album. “We’ve been working on a song for a while now,” Paul said. “And, you know, what better time than now?” Are you excited for Jermaine Paul’s debut album? ‘American Idol’ Fresh Out Of Saves For Colton Dixon

Seeming front-runner shockingly voted off the show, joined in the bottom three by Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh. By Adam Graham Colton Dixon on “American Idol” Photo: Fox “Bad Romance” turned out just plain bad for Colton Dixon on Thursday (April 19), as the 20-year-old Tennessean — who had never before landed in the bottom three — was voted off “American Idol.” Dixon found himself at the bottom of the 53 million votes cast following Wednesday’s performance episode . Dixon, the Mohawk-mullet-wearing emo-rocker who entered “Idol” initially only as a show of moral support for his sister, performed a goth-lite version of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” on Wednesday’s show, as well as an emo reading of Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September.” When given the news he had been voted off — and would indeed be going home, since the judges used their one-and-only save for the season last week to rescue Jessica Sanchez from oblivion — Dixon said sorry to his fans. “I need to apologize. I wasn’t myself last night, and I get it,” he said, turning to the judges. “I appreciate what you told me last night. I’ll take that when I’m making a record, and I’ll choose songs … ” He was cut off by Jennifer Lopez, who told him, “You’ll make many records,” and Randy Jackson, who offered, “You have a huge career ahead of you, man.” Dixon had received generally favorable remarks from the judges throughout the season but was dinged for his performances Wednesday, in particular for the Earth, Wind & Fire tune. In a video that aired Thursday (April 19) that caught him backstage, Dixon reacted to the criticism. “Ouch, that kind of stung a little bit,” he said. “But honestly, I’m not trying to sound cocky, but I don’t care.” Dixon was in the bottom three along with Hollie Cavanagh and perpetual bottom-dweller Elise Testone. Testone was sent back to safety first, leaving Dixon and Cavanagh to sweat it out. Host Ryan Seacrest was up to even more tricks than usual when handing contestants their fate Thursday; at one point he told Joshua Ledet, “I’m afraid … you didn’t get the right number of votes … to put you in the bottom three. You are safe!” (C’mon, Seacrest, that barely even makes sense.) Regarding Ledet, “Idol” mentor Jimmy Iovine remarked, “He could end up in the finale.” In a video package, Seacrest paid tribute to his mentor Dick Clark, who died Wednesday at age 82. The evening also saw performances from Kris Allen, who sang his new song “The Vision of Love,” and party rockers LMFAO, who apologized for their party-rocking ways with a typically raucous rendition of “Sorry for Party Rocking.” What did you think of “Idol” on Thursday? Kanye West Might Turn Up On ‘Keeping Up With The Kardashians’

Source says the rapper will appear on ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ at end of season. By Jocelyn Vena Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Photo: Eric Ryan/ Getty Images While Kim Kardashian might be waiting to see what the future holds for her and Kanye West after going out on several dates in New York last week, fans of her E! show, “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” might soon be let in on their budding romance. According to a source, the rapper may appear on the show towards the end of the season. “Kanye is head over heels in love with Kim, and he has told her he would love to appear on the reality show if she wants him to,” the source told Radar Online about possible cameos. “Kim is a bit leery of having her man appear on camera because of the whole fiasco with her soon-to-be ex-husband, Kris Humphries, but watch for Kanye to make several appearances on the show towards the end of the season. Viewers won’t see him featured in the first part of the season, and it won’t be all about Kanye.” It would hardly be the first time that Yeezy showed up on a Kardashian reality show. He previously appeared on the NYC-based Shortly after he appeared on the show, Kim brushed off any rumors that anything romantic was happening between the pair, instead dubbing him the Kardashians’ “fashion muse.” Now, however, both parties seem to be more forthcoming about what exactly is happening between them, and that includes some lyrics about Kanye’s feelings for Kim on his track “Theraflu.” The source added that “Kim feels extremely comfortable with Kanye because she feels that for the first time she is with a partner that understands what she does for a living and doesn’t scrutinize her for being in a reality show. … She also doesn’t feel like Kanye is using her, like she did with Kris.” While the Radar source insists that Kanye will appear on the show, another source tells the Huffington Post that the series had already completed filming by the time the two began dating. “The next season shows Kim, after her devastating split with soon-to-be ex-husband Kris Humphries, get even closer to her family,” the source said. “Kourtney is getting ready for the arrival of a baby girl, and Khloe is dealing with reports that she might not be the biological daughter of Robert Kardashian. But all 18 new episodes were shot before Kim started dating Kanye.” Kourtney Kardashian appeared on Fox News and didn’t really have much to say about the couple’s relationship status or whether Kanye will appear on the show when it kicks off next month. “Well, he has a ‘K,’ but I think they’re friends,” she said. “They’re definitely friends and [have] been friends for years. … I don’t think so, who knows.” Related Photos Kim Kardashian Photos Related Artists Kanye West

Justin Bieber Will Show Off His ‘New And Fresh’ Side In ‘Boyfriend’ Video

‘Boyfriend’ clip is going to ‘make people like the song more,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino Justin Bieber’s Boyfriend Photo: Walmart/ Island Justin Bieber is gradually giving fans a taste of his forthcoming video for “Boyfriend.” In the latest tease for the clip, which he tweeted out , several more shots are revealed. They include a watery, booming speaker, Bieber whispering in a pretty girl’s ear and the singer standing in silhouette, snapping his fingers in front of the moon. “I think people are going to be really happy [with the video] and … I think it’s going to make people like the song more,” Bieber told MTV News on the set of the video, directed by Colin Tilley. “The album, in general, is just really new and fresh and I think people are going to be really happy to hear it.” The song certainly represents a more mature sound for the 18-year-old, who has abandoned the doo-wop-influenced pop of his past for a Justin Timberlake vibe . But if fans think Believe will sound like “Boyfriend,” Bieber explains that this track offers only a sampling of the album’s overall sound. “I think it’s part of it,” he said. “I mean, my whole album is so different and every song’s different on the album, and I think that what’s special about it is nothing sounds the same.” After Bieber teased that he’d be hitting the studio with his mentor Usher , the two tweeted a bit more about working together. “Ohh … and trust we got a duet coming for ‘LOOKING 4 MYSELF’ and ‘BELIEVE,’ ” Usher tweeted about working with the teen star on both of their forthcoming albums. “He has come a long way. Proud to see his evolution as an artist!” Believe will drop later this year, with the “Boyfriend” video dropping sometime soon. Looking for Myself, Usher’s next album, will be released in June. All people of that generation should be there to help each other.” The singer is also making some beautiful music with his mentor and guiding light: Usher. On Wednesday, the Biebs tweeted that he was in the studio with, “@iawill and @usherraymondiv going in!” He didn’t reveal the name of the song Black Eyed Peas mastermind will.i.am was working on for the pair, but followed with the (grammatically challenged) amped-up thought, “Me and @usherraymondiv gotta have a duet on every album.” They’re just a few of the superstars he’s recruited for the project. ‘The Voice’ Recap: Erin Martin Wins One Strange Battle

Six more contestants are sent home as battle rounds continue and the live shows draw nearer. By John Mitchell Erin Martin on “The Voice” Photo: NBC The theme on Monday night’s (March 19) episode of “The Voice” seemed to be strange pairings and even more oddly matched songs. Nearly every team to enter the ring was working one, the other or both for the third battle round, which saw judges Christina Aguilera , Blake Shelton , Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green send six contestants home and add even more members to their respective teams to take to the upcoming shows. Let’s get right to it! Team Adam The first pairing of the night was Team Adam’s Pip and Nathan Parrett. Pip’s popularity during the blind auditions (he got all four judges to turn their chairs) intimidated Nathan from the start and the pair was given a tall order when Adam assigned them Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” It’s no wonder, then, that mentor Robin Thicke’s major recommendation to Perrett was to up his confidence and get ready to sell it once he hit the stage. But while Thicke was busy giving Perrett a pep talk, Alanis Morrisette was advising Pip to take it down a notch and not over-sing the song Two clean-cut pop singers tackling Winehouse’s bluesy hit might seem strange, but it gave both an opportunity to show their range as vocalists and earned raves from all the judges. Ultimately, though, Pip’s stage presence and consistency won him a place on Team Adam for the finals. One of the night’s few pairings that made sense came later in the night, during Levine’s team’s second meeting in the ring, which saw raspy Angel Taylor go up against “sultry vocalist” (host Carson Daly’s words, not mine) Katrina Parker, singing “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Thicke had a lot of faith in Taylor, saying she had what it takes to win the whole thing if she remembered to bring emotion to her performance, but the judges didn’t feel the same. Parker brought it to the battle and won the support of Xtina, Blake, Cee Lo and ultimately Levine, who sided with the three judges and will take Parker with him to the live shows. Team Cee Lo Cee Lo created what had to be the night’s most awkward pairing: whispery Erin Martin and rock duo the Shields Brothers. Stylistically, the two couldn’t be more different — Martin kind of sounds like Macy Gray, while the Shields Brother tear into songs like your friendly neighborhood garage band. The strangeness extended to the mentor stage too, when the Bros were joined for rehearsal by Babyface, who called their first run-through “a challenge.” “I thought ‘Wayne’s World,’ ” he added. He asked them to express a softer side, and when they did, he seemed pleased that he could finally “hear your voices.” On her way into the ring, Martin was “100 percent confident” she would win and that “power [i.e. the Shields Brothers] isn’t talent, it’s just loud.” (Dis!) This battle was strange right down to the song: “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by Tina Turner. Christina raved about the performance, but the other judges weren’t so sure. The only thing Blake could really think to say was, “Erin, I am so glad you wore that.” Cee Lo called it “wonderfully strange” and chose Martin to move forward because he felt he would be better able to mold her unique voice while the Shield Brothers were too set in their garage-rock shtick. Team Christina Ashley De La Rosa became nervous the second Christina told her was going up against one of the show’s early front-runners, Jonathas, a father of two who lived in poverty as a child in Brazil. When they were given “No Air” by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, she started freaking out. During the blind auditions, Jonathas’ vocal similarity to Usher caused quite a stir, so Ashley worried that being given a song so firmly in his wheelhouse (there was no denying from the beginning that he’d sing the heck out of Chris Brown’s part in “No Air”) would play to his advantage. But in the end, his comfort with the style and choice not to step outside it and show the judges he could do something else worked against him. While he was a natural singing Brown’s smooth R&B, the song gave Ashley a chance to show off her range. She did a great job with Sparks’ part, and her effort was rewarded with a continued spot on Team Xtina. Team Blake The strange pairings continued as Team Blake’s Jermaine Paul, a former backup singer for Alicia Keys, and pop-singing Texas teenager AlyX hit the ring together to sing the mega-’80s classic “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” by Billy Ocean. The song required a carefree attitude that mentor Miranda Lambert just wasn’t confident young AlyX had. “I’m not sure she’s ever had fun and cut loose,” Lambert said, prescribing “sassiness” if she wanted to pose much of a challenge against Jermaine. It was a futile effort. Paul owned the song and the judges let him know it. “I mean, come on, Jermaine, you made that song your own,” Xtina fawned. Adam and Cee Lo agreed. And while Blake offered AlyX an “A” for effort, he unsurprisingly went with Paul, sending AlyX packing. The night’s most dramatic performance was its last, between Team Blake’s Gwen Sebastian and Erin Willet. In addition to their respective backstories (more on that later), the pair are total opposites when it comes to their singing styles. “Gwen is a country singer; Erin couldn’t be anything farther from that,” Blake explained as his rationale for teaming the two. And like every other country singer in the competition, Sebastian was enamored with her mentor Lambert, saying of the country star, “Her voice evokes every emotion I want to as a singer.” Things took a turn just before the battle, however, when Erin revealed that her father, who is suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, is not doing that well. In fact, he’d only been given days to live, but he wanted her to stay in the competition, “I’m trying to be as present as I can be,” Willett told Shelton, who praised her devotion to both her father’s wishes and the competition. “I’m going to push from a place of wanting my father to be proud of me,” Willett said before she went on. Each judge commented on how radically different the two singers’ vocal styles were when they hit the stage, and it divided them. Christina and Adam went with Erin while Cee Lo picked Gwen. In the end, Blake sided with Xtina and Adam and picked Willett, who dedicated her win to her father. Moving On

Rachel Crow On Simon Cowell: ‘I Really Love Him’

‘X Factor’ vet, who recently signed deals with Nickelodeon and Columbia Records, tells MTV News, ‘Everything worked out perfectly.’ By Christina Garibaldi Rachel Crow Photo: MTV News It was the most shocking elimination of the first season of “The X Factor” when Rachel Crow was sent home in December. The 13-year-old, known for her infectious personality and smile, dropped to her knees in tearful exit, saying to the crowd, “I hope this is not my ending. You know what? I know it’s not, and I will go so far. I promise you, and I love you.” It seems Crow was right: Just last month, the young star signed an overall talent deal with Nickelodeon to star in her own comedy series and signed a record deal with Columbia Records. MTV News caught up with Crow recently in Los Angeles, who revealed that she has no regrets about her time on “Factor” or her fifth-place elimination. “A lot of people ask me if I looked back, what would be one thing that I would change? And, nothing,” Crow said. “Everything worked out perfectly.” A big supporter of Crow was her mentor on the show, Simon Cowell, who said after her elimination, “Like I said from the very first time I met you, we’re going to be hearing a lot more about Rachel Crow. I give you my word on that.” Crow revealed that she and Cowell have kept in contact and that his support is a big reason for her success. “I text him, funny enough,” she shared. “I love him; he’s just a really nice guy. “It’s really awesome to have someone like that on your team. I really love him, and I look up to him as well and what he’s done for me. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t be where I am today, so it’s really amazing getting to say that to people. I’m very thankful.” Yet, Cowell isn’t the only “X Factor” vet Crow keeps in touch with: She said she remains friends with many of the contestants as well as former judge Paula Abdul. “I do keep in touch with Paula a lot; we tweet back and forth, which is awesome,” Crow said. “I do keep in touch with a lot of the contestants, such as Drew , Marcus, I do keep in touch with Stereo Hogzz, Melanie [Amaro] , a lot of people from the show, Chris Rene , just pretty much everyone that was top 10.” So what was Crow’s reaction to the firing of both Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger ? “Well, I think they’re both really great people, and they’re gonna do amazing things,” she said. It’s now looking likely that Britney Spears will fill one of the vacant judges’ seats . The pop star was reportedly offered the position and a $10 million paycheck. “That’d be cool,” Crow said of Spears being a judge. “I’m just kinda moved past it right now.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Rachel Crow
