Bret Michaels To Make First TV Appearance Since Brain Hemorrhage

He will appear on Wednesday’s episode of ‘Oprah’ and plans to attend the live ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ finale. By MTV News staff Bret Michaels Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images Bret Michaels will make his first TV appearance since suffering a brain hemorrhage on Wednesday’s episode of “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” People reports. He’s also planning to attend the live “Celebrity Apprentice” finale on May 23, his rep told the magazine Friday (May 13). The rep confirmed reports that Michaels is aiming to be back on the road in time for his May 28 show at the Hard Rock in Biloxi, Mississippi. The 47-year-old Poison rocker, who suffered a nearly fatal brain hemorrhage last month, was discharged from a Phoenix hospital on May 4. Michaels is reportedly stepping up his physical therapy to get back in shape for the Mississippi show on his postponed Roses & Thorns Tour. That outing was first interrupted when Michaels underwent an emergency appendectomy on April 12. At a May 4 press conference, Michaels’ doctors said he was doing well, walking and talking and expected to make a 100 percent recovery. At the time, physicians said he was still subject to painful blood clots, back pain and headaches. His doctor predicted at the time that Michaels might be able to resume regular activities within four to six weeks but said that he warned Michaels not to make any promises about when he would get back to work. Bret Michaels Is ‘Definitely Doing Better,’ Sister Says

Todaro/Getty Images Bret Michaels remains in the intensive care unit nearly two weeks after suffering a brain hemorrhage , but his sister said on Monday that he is making slow, steady progress. Speaking again to the “Todd n Tyler Radio Empire” radio show, Michelle Sychak said she spoke to her brother on Saturday and that Michaels was “definitely doing better — he was kind of getting up and starting to walk a bit … because they don’t want the blood to clot.” The other good news was that the Poison singer no longer has slurred speech, according to his sister, but that progress has come along with some other issues. “What’s happened is all that blood in his brain is starting to drain, and he’s starting to have a lot of back pain,” she said, noting that her brother is getting antsy about being in the hospital and is eager to leave. “I can hear it in his voice. I know he’s in a lot of pain. … I said, ‘Bret, considering what you’ve been through … things could be so much worse.’ ” Sychak said Michaels’ slurred speech might have partly been caused by the morphine doctors were giving him for pain. Despite optimistic reports from the Michaels camp that he could be up and back out on the road by the end of the month — which she said was a misunderstanding about the soonest he could possibly be back onstage — Sychak said she’s hopeful, but realistic about the challenges the 47-year-old rocker faces. “Obviously, if he’s up and moving, that’s great, but honestly it’s not going to surprise me if he’s still in the ICU on Friday,” she said. “I think (the doctors are) having a problem really getting the bleeding. … Even though they’ve sort of caught it, I think there are some issues with them really stopping and figuring out the source. That’s why [there’s] back pain.” The news came on the same day that doctors at the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, were preparing for their first press conference on Michaels’ condition on Tuesday (May 4). Neurologists and neurosurgeons from the institute are scheduled to discuss the case at 12 p.m. PT, providing an update on Michaels’ condition, treatment and prognosis. Bret Michaels’ Medical Setback Is Routine, Expert Says

By Gil Kaufman Bret Michaels Photo: George Napolitano/ Getty Images long road to recovery from a brain hemorrhage hit a minor setback on Tuesday, when his spokesperson revealed that the Poison singer is suffering from hyponatremia , a lack of sodium in the body that could lead to seizures. While serious, the medical issue is a fairly typical complication of the type of subarachnoid hemorrhage stroke suffered by the 47-year-old rock star, according to Dr. Joseph Broderick, a member of the American Academy of Neurology and chair of the University of Cincinnati Neurology Department. Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos “The body regulates the amount of minerals in the blood within a narrow range, and sodium is one of them,” said Broderick, a specialist in the treatment of acute stroke and the genetics of hemorrhagic stroke. Broderick, who is not treating Michaels and does not have first-hand knowledge of the singer’s case, told MTV News earlier this week that based on the information made public so far, the case is very serious but could be survivable. “There are a lot of things that could lead to sodium levels being outside normal range and it’s not atypical as a complication of a subarachnoid hemorrhage,” Broderick said on Wednesday. “It’s complicated, but is generally a treatable thing that people recover from and not generally life-threatening.” Hyponatremia can make a patient sleepier and, as noted, increase the risk of seizures in the short term, but Broderick said it doesn’t make them more prone to seizures in the long term. If properly managed by Michaels’ doctors, the disorder should not pose a long term threat to his brain health.

So when she learned of the Poison frontman’s brain hemorrhage and subsequent stint in an intensive care unit , she was crushed. Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos “[It’s] just hideous,” Osbourne told Us Weekly on Tuesday (April 27.) “It’s devastating, and it makes you feel all these different things. Your heart goes out to his family, your heart goes out to him. He’s the nicest guy in the world. And then you start thinking about your own mortality. You start thinking, ‘Oh my God.’ It just makes you appreciate how lucky we all are.” Osbourne added that the last time she had seen Michaels, he was “absolutely” in good health. She wasn’t the only friend of Michaels’ to comment on the ailing rocker’s health. His “Apprentice” co-star Bill Goldberg told RadarOnline.com that he had recently spoken to Michaels and advised him to “slow down with his lifestyle,” and “Apprentice” boss Donald Trump told the “Today” show that Michaels was “a real competitor … he would work so hard, maybe harder than anybody else. And he’s doing well.” And on Tuesday, Pete Evick — Michaels’ friend and guitarist in the Bret Michaels Band — posted a lengthy message on BretMichaels.com , which thanked fans for the “overwhelming love and well wishes” the rocker has received and paid tribute to a man he called “a loyal friend” and a fiercely hard worker. “When I was invited into Bret’s world, over 5 years ago, I was introduced to a new level of strength and loyalty … so much that I had to rethink my whole life and how I do things. I didn’t understand what it meant to be a loyal friend. The kind that would do anything you ever needed without even asking why, what, who or where,” Evick wrote. “Bret is the kind of guy that wakes up every day and treats it like it is his first, and may be his last. He is full of passion, energy and love. But most of all, he is a survivor. Against the odds of a critical music industry, or battling a crippling disease, over and over again Bret has come out on top and ahead of the game. By Lisa Brenner Tito Ortiz Photo: Arnold Turner/ Getty Images UFC fighter Tito Ortiz was arrested Monday (April 26) in Huntington Beach, California, accused of felony domestic violence against the mother of his twin boys and the world’s most famous adult-film star, Jenna Jameson. TMZ reported that Jameson had “visible injuries” when police arrived on the scene following an early morning 911 call — allegedly placed by Jameson’s father — that sent authorities to investigate a disturbance at the home she shares with boyfriend Ortiz. The 35-year-old fighter was handcuffed and taken into custody, and there are conflicting reports about whether he has left the Orange County jail. TMZ reported him released late Monday afternoon after posting $50,000 bail with a cashier’s check, while MMA Weekly is reporting that the mixed martial artist is still being held in lieu of bail set at $25,000. Updating from the Ortiz/Jameson residence, TMZ learned that Jameson intends to press charges and had already filed a restraining order. “I am completely shocked,” she told the website. “Tito is a loving, sweet man, and I’ve always supported him through everything. For him to lash out at me like this is shocking, and I feel completely betrayed. Completely betrayed. And I feel bad for my children.” Jameson announced on her Twitter page that she plans to quit the micro-blogging site, writing, “I’m sorry to all of my fans, but I’m going to be quitting Twitter. I cant take any more abuse from ANYONE.. Online . “He is a strong-willed person, so I am feeling very positive that he will pull through like a champion. My thoughts are with his family.” While Australian chef Curtis Stone had it out for Bret during a previous “Celebrity Apprentice” challenge that involved a country-star makeover, he had nothing but kind words for the rocker. “He’s a nice man, and I’ve got great wishes for him,” Stone told E!. He is under 24-hour doctors’ care and supervision. We are hopeful that further tests will locate the source of the bleeding, which has still not been located. As we all know Bret is a fighter and we are hopeful that once all is complete the slurred speech, blurred vision and dizziness, etc. will be eliminated and all functions will return to normal. “More information will be posted as it becomes available,” the post concludes. Now, encouraging word has leaked that Michaels may be better off than initially feared. TMZ is reporting that Michaels is “awake, in good spirits and talking” as of Friday evening (April 23). This information comes from Ambre Lake, the season-two winner of Michaels’ “Rock of Love” reality show. TMZ reports that Lake has spoken with people close to Bret who say he’s “stabilized and conscious.” Lake’s status update on the 47-year-old hair-metal legend is said to coincide with another unidentified “Rock of Love” contestant who is in touch with the other members of Poison.
