Jill Duggar: Is She Even Qualified to Homeschool Her Kids?!

Jill Duggar has been in the spotlight quite a bit these past two weeks. And it’s all pretty impressive, especially when you consider that she hasn’t shot a scene for her family’s reality show in over a year. Much of the controversy has had to do with Jill’s seemingly troubled marriage. The scrutiny started with rumors of Derick Dillard cheating on Jill last year. They intensified when the couple seemed to distance themselves from one another on social media and when they spent no time with her family over the holiday season. In her own indirect way, Jill has addressed the divorce rumors , and it seems that for the time being at least, she and Derick are not going their separate ways. Of course, if she thought that would put a stop to the rumor mill, she’s got another thing coming. Instead, Duggar obsessives have merely switched gears and are now focusing on Jill’s child-rearing methods. Like so many of her sisters, Jill has been mom-shamed on numerous occasions. She’s been accused of neglect, of improper nutritional practices, and of forcing her children to walk several miles for Chick-Fil-A . But these days, most of the criticism of Jill’s parenting skills has to do with her decision to homeschool her kids. Many have pointed to Jill’s kids’ lack of verbal and mathematical skills as evidence that she’s not up to the task. And the problem, these people claim, is not only that Jill has no experience as a teacher, but also that she’s relying on seriously flawed methods and materials. The Duggars homeschool curriculum has been heavily criticized in the past, largely due to a leaked lesson plan which teaches children sexual assault victims are often to blame for their assailants’ crimes. But that’s not the only reason that the Duggars’ methods have drawn criticism. Like her siblings, Jill relies on materials from the Institute for Basic Life Principles, a highly controversial organization founded by disgraced sex offender Bill Gothard . The curriculum relies on  “the teachings of Jesus Christ” to teach homeschooled children the basics in “linguistics, law, history, science, and medicine.” Nothing like a 2,000-year-old book to help your kids stay up-to-date on science! We kid, but perhaps if Jill’s kids appeared to be up to speed, her followers would be more accepting of her controversial methods. As it is, she may want to brace herself for more criticism. Oscar’s Chair Says The Birth Of A Nation Is “Too Important” To Toss Out Over Rape Allegations

Cheryl Boone Isaacs Defends The Birth Of A Nation Cheyrl Boone Isaacs , the newest President of the Motion Picture Academy isn’t on board with the American Film Institute’s decision to scrap the screening of The Birth Of A Nation after news of Nate Parker’s old rape case have come to light. Cheryl, who’s been championing more diversity in the Oscars, says that in this situation, it’s most appropriate to judge the art, separate from the artist himself… Via TMZ : “The Birth of a Nation” is a movie every American absolutely needs to see — regardless of star and director Nate Parker’s old rape trial … at least that’s how the Oscars honcho sees it. Cheryl Boone Isaacs, Prez of the Motion Picture Academy, talked to us Thursday about the potential backlash. The American Film Institute canceled a screening of the movie this week, and Parker’s come under fire since details of the 2001 trial were released. Parker was acquitted, but Isaacs doesn’t think moviegoers should be concerned with that anyway. It’s a strong point of view, considering Isaacs’ gender, and her position in the Academy … which has been skewered for a lack of diversity in nominated films. Welp, with the dirt on other lauded actors directors and screenwriters in Hollywood that routinely gets swept under the rug…can you say you disagree? TMZ/YouTube

Study Finds The Average Black Family Needs 228 Years To Catch Up To The Wealth Of The Average White Family Today

Study Predicts That It Would Take Black Families 228 Years To Catch Up With White Wealth Today A new study predicts that in the future , the wage gap between White Americans and Minorities continues to grow larger as opposed to getting better– and it would take 228 years for black families to acquire the wealth of white families today. Via The Nation If current economic trends continue, the average black household will need 228 years to accumulate as much wealth as their white counterparts hold today. For the average Latino family, it will take 84 years. Absent significant policy interventions, or a seismic change in the American economy, people of color will never close the gap. Those are the key findings of a new study of the racial wealth-gap released this week by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) and the Corporation For Economic Development (CFED). They looked at trends in household wealth from 1983 to 2013—a 30-year period that captured the rise of Reaganomics, expanded international trade and two major financial crashes fueled by bubbles in the tech sector and housing prices. The authors found that the average wealth of white households increased by 84 percent during those three decades, three times the gains African-American families saw and 1.2 times the rate of growth for Latino families. To put that in perspective, the wealthiest Americans—members of the Forbes 400 list—saw their net worths increase by 736 percent during that period, on average. If those trends persist for another 30 years, the average white family’s net worth will grow by $18,000 per year, but black and Hispanic households would only see theirs grow by $750 and $2,250 per year, respectively. Race Matters: Study Shows Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote In Elections

Young Black Americans Are LEAST Likely To Vote A new study shows that young African Americans are not finding their way to the ballot box according to Washington Post : African Americans account for a larger share of Democratic primary voters this year than they did in 2008, but that is because of older black voters, not higher participation by younger black people. Across two dozen states where exit polls were conducted in 2008 and this year, black voters older than 45 grew from 12 percent of the electorate on average in 2008 to 16 percent this year. In those same states, black voters younger than 45 made up 11 percent of voters in 2008 vs. 10 percent this year. Democratic candidates and strategists have stressed the importance this year of all young voters, who heavily favored Obama in both of his election contests — and Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont in this year’s Democratic primaries. But younger Americans are the least likely to turn out in elections: The share of eligible voters ages 18 to 29 who cast ballots fell from a record high of 48 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in the 2012 presidential election, according to the U.S. Elections Project. Fredrick Harris, a political science professor and director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University, said the success of the Black Lives Matter movement should not be measured only by voter turnout or candidate preference. It has succeeded at doing what no other black leaders have done, especially those who have lined up to endorse either Sanders or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. “Voting is definitely one way, and I wouldn’t insult my ancestors by telling people they shouldn’t vote, but there are other ways of reimagining and restructuring the world, and that lies in organizing our communities,” said Ashley Williams, a 23-year-old activist who attends the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Josh Duggar: Rehab Center Exposed as Scam?

While we don’t officially know Josh Duggar’s whereabouts , the leading theory is that he’s undergoing a six-month treatment program at the Reformer’s Unanimous rehab center in Illinois. As for the reports that Josh has gone missing from the center, many fans believe that was simply an attempt by the Duggars’ reps to keep the media focus off of the facility in Rockford, IL for fear of distracting Josh – or exposing some of RU’s more bizarre practices. We’ve already detailed the extreme method of “treatment” the Duggars have chosen for Josh , but now, sources familiar with RU are saying that Josh won’t receive any proper counseling or therapy, as the center exists only to make money for the Institute in Basic Life Principles, and its disgraced founder, Bill Gothard. The Duggars were devoted followers of Gothard’s and based their homeschool teachings on materials provided by the IBLP. When Josh was sent to counseling after admitting to molesting his sisters, his parents entrusted him to the IBLP. Clearly, the treatment wasn’t terribly effective, and Gothard resigned shortly thereafter, following a scandal in which he was accused of groping and sexually his female employees. Now, Josh is receiving a more intense version of the same treatment, and it’s no more likely to deter him from engaging in deviant behavior the second time around. “There’s no medical license, and it’s not even clear what Josh is doing there,” a source familiar with the facility tells Radar Online. “It’s really just another way for the church to make money.” Fortunately for the folks at the IBLP, the Duggars have plenty of money – and if they stick with their current methods, Josh will need a lot of treatment.

Digital Racism: New Study Finds That Officials Are Less Likely To Respond To E-Mails From Black-Sounding Names

Study Says E-Mails From Black Users Receive Fewer Responses Researchers have discovered yet another area where Blackness is discriminated against. As it turns out, even our emails aren’t seen as worth the time it took to write them, if the recipient suspects that the name in the address sounds like that of a Black person. A new study from the Institute for the Study of Labour in Bonn, Germany has found that emails coming from users presumably African American names are less likely to receive any response from public service authorities than those coming from users with more generic, “white-sounding” names. The “Black” e-mails were also less likely to receive a response with a cordial tone, or to be addressed by name or even with a simple respectful salutation such as ‘hello’ or ‘dear’ than those with white names attached. The study was conducted with two “white names” – Jake Mueller and Greg Walsh – and two names that sound more African-Americans – DeShawn Jackson and Tyrone Washington. Over a two week period, the researchers sent 19,079 emails to local government offices — school authorities, libraries, sheriff offices, treasurers, job centers and country clerks — all across the US. The emails signed by the white names received a response 72% of the time, while the ones from with black-sounding names received responses in only 68% of cases. Unsurprisingly, Sheriffs’ offices were the most dismissive of emails from black-sounding names, with those 7% less likely to receive a response than those from white people. Researchers said they found a ‘significant racial gap’ in all four regions of the US they tested – north-east, mid-west, south and west – although some states were worse than others. Dr. Corrado Giulietti, one of the authors of the study, said that this is clearly one of the many reasons that African-Americans face inequalities. Via MailOnline : “Local services constitute the majority of interactions between government institutions and citizens and perform central functions, for instance in education. The discriminatory attitude that our study uncovers could be one of the factors behind the disadvantaged position of black people in American society and could be a major obstacle towards addressing racial inequality.” Well, this is something we could have guessed. What do YOU think of the study’s findings??
