Weekend Receipts: Shrek the Third

Not once in 2009 did a movie lead the box office for three or more straight weeks. Here in 2010, though, that trick has been turned by Avatar , Alice in Wonderland and now Shrek Forever After — the animated sequel easily held off newcomers Get Him to the Greek and Killers to retain the top spot for a third straight week. And while other new releases Marmaduke and Splice failed to crack the top-ten, the biggest loser of the weekend was — once again — MacGruber : The comedy shed over 2,300 screens and dropped 93.9 percent in its third week. Yikes squared. Say a prayer for Will Forte and click ahead for some weekend receipts.

Sandra Bullock Makes First Public Appearance

Bad news, producers of tonight’s MTV Movie Awards: That exclusive ” first formal public appearance ” of Sandra Bullock that you’ve been touting, isn’t so exclusive any longer. Bullock was a surprise guest at the Spike TV Guy’s Choice Awards last night — where she accepted her trophy for Troops Choice Entertainer of the Year — meaning when she accepts the MTV Generation Award tonight, it will actually be her second television appearance, post-Jesse James, and not her first. The moral of the story? If you want a celebrity to break a prolonged silence, offer them a fake award. [ TMZ ]

Why Fox Searchlight’s ‘Movies For Black People’ Experiment Failed

Give Fox Searchlight some credit, I guess, for attempting to navigate one of the more challenging markets in contemporary film: the “urban market,” i.e. movies targeted toward minority viewerships, particularly African-Americans. And now that most signs point to the company’s retreat from that same market after a few conspicuous underperformers, go ahead and ask: What went wrong?

What the Nickelodeon Stars of Yesterday Look Like Today

It’s Friday, your day’s almost over…what better way to celebrate the imminent weekend than by feeling really, really old all of a sudden? Flavorwire can help; the site has rounded up a who’s who of former Nickelodeon stars (including The Adventures of Pete & Pete star Michael Maronna, above) for a “then and now” photo comparison that, if nothing else, confirms that we’re living in a post-splat world . At least Sam from Clarissa is still kinda cute. [ Flavorwire ]

Chace Crawford Arrested

TMZ is reporting that Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford was arrested late last night for marijuana possession. The actor was busted in a Texas parking lot, where cops found him and a friend in a car with one unlit joint. Maybe he can blame it on being stood up for dinner ? [ TMZ ]

FlashForward Fans Plan Mass Blackouts

And you thought eating that foot-long from Subway to support Chuck was a big deal. Fans of FlashForward are so outraged over their favorite show being prematurely killed by ABC, that they’re staging their own flash-forwards. On June 10, fans will gather in front of ABC network and affiliate offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta and “blackout” — as in, lie on the ground with their eyes closed — for two minutes and 17 seconds, the same amount of time the characters on the show blacked out for. Creative! Trauma fans, the ball is in your court. [ On the Air ]

James Cameron Lashes Out at ‘Morons’ After His Help is Denied by BP

Looks like Sexy Cowgirl will never get her chance to be a hero . The world reacted with bemused cheers the other day when Avatar director James Cameron met with the EPA to brainstorm methods to stop BP’ s oil-gushing leak. What he didn’t reveal until now? BP itself turned down his offers of help. (Just picture Paul Reiser delivering this news to Cameron with sleazy faux-regretfulness after trying to put an alien parasite down Newt’s throat.)

McDonald’s Forced to Recall 12 Million Shrek Drinking Glasses

No wonder Shrek is green. McDonald’s is being forced to recall 12 million Shrek Forever After -themed drinking glasses because the painted design — which the AP story hilariously calls “cheap” — contains the toxic metal cadmium. And — wouldn’t you know it — cadmium is a known carcinogen that can cause bone softening and severe kidney problems. Good job, everyone! Do you want fries with that? [ MSNBC ]
