I have a fantasy that we will one day live in a world in which films that are obviously dripping with influences will no longer need to have titles. They’ll just be called ” Earthquake meets When Harry Met Sally ,” or ” The Godfather , but in space,” and filmgoers will be able to make split second decisions about seeing it without having to be advertised to. For instance, the upcoming British sci/fi horror film Storage 24 . Directed by Johannes Roberts and co-written by/starring Noel Clarke of Doctor Who fame, it has a couple who’ve just broken up meeting at a shared storage unit to divide their possessions. The meet ends in science fictional tragedy when a top secret British cargo plane crashes in London and its cargo, a scary-ass alien monster, escapes. The monster finds its way to the public storage facility in question where, so we assume, everyone inside is picked off one by one because that’s how extraterrestrial serial killers roll. The new red band trailer has just premiered, and while it does indeed suggest that Storage 24 is awesome, they could have done much more to guarantee my ass in the seat by simply calling it Die Hard + Alien + Storage Wars and forsaken the trailer altogether. Courtney Love is described as mentally unstable in newly released deposition papers filed by her daughter Frances Bean Cobain, who sought a restraining order in 2009. Frances Bean, now 19, says Love’s behavior even caused her pets’ death. Their cat kicked it after getting entangled in Love’s messy piles of “Etsy fabrics, boxes of paperwork, trash and other possessions,” according to the court papers, while the dog swallowed several of Love’s stash of prescription pills. In order to ensure that no other pets fell victim to Love’s pill-popping habits, Cobain included her dog, Uncle Fester, on the restraining order which was granted. Among those Love was ordered to avoid contact with include Cobain, Uncle Fester, Cobains’ grandmother and her aunt. The primary reason? Love’s drug use. “(She) has taken drugs for as long as I can remember,” Cobain said . “She basically exists now on … Xanax, Adderall, Sonata and Abilify, sugar and cigarettes. She rarely eats … She often falls asleep in bed while smoking.” “I am constantly worried that she will start a fire (which she has done at least three times to date) that will threaten all of our lives.” Cobain initially filed the restraining order and sought to emancipate herself against her mom in December 2009 following a physical fight between the two. Cobain spoke out about another bizarre incident that occurred several years before, when Love took her to visit Love’s former boyfriend, James Barber. “She took me in a taxi to his house in the middle of the night, and from outside the house, in her bare feet, she screamed at him, threw rocks at the house, threatening to burn his [expletive] house down,” Cobain said in the sworn statement. “His children were inside, but that did not stop my mother.” Mother and daughter have had a rocky relationship since the restraining order was granted, but Frances Bean Cobain is trying to move on with her life. She became engaged to Isaiah Silva , the lead singer of The Rambles, in October and the happy pair are looking forward to their upcoming nuptials. “Getting to spend the rest of my life loving my best friend makes me the luckiest woman in the world,” Cobain wrote on her Facebook at the time. ‘If we devoted ourselves to preserving life rather than our bank accounts, we would all be richer for it,’ he tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Thomas Ohlson Photo: MTV News We first met Thomas Ohlson during MTV’s “Diary of Facebook,” a 30-minute documentary that delved into the social-networking site’s effort to highlight users’ life-changing stories. In 2005, Ohlson was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a devastating disease that causes motor neurons to die, leading muscles to waste away while cognitive abilities remain unaffected. Confined to a wheelchair, unable to talk and despairing that his life no longer had purpose, he ended up creating a Facebook account and, in turn, new reasons to keep fighting. Though he can only type with two fingers, Ohlson has become an articulate ALS activist, sharing his experiences and becoming a public face of his disease. His courage in the face of unimaginable suffering was so affecting that we decided to visit Ohlson and his family at home for further insight into their remarkable situation. “I spend a lot of time thinking about how wonderful my life was only five short years ago — the dreams I had for myself and my family,” Ohlson told us. “Now, all gone. I have no real future and have impacted my family in ways that cause me great sorrow. … I want my family to remember me as the strong and proud father and husband I once was, not the disfigured and helpless creature that I have become. ALS is not only killing me, it is taking my loved ones with me — killing any semblance of a normal existence for them.” The brutal truth is that, not only is there no cure for ALS, there is not even a single treatment for it. “I feel like this is a bad joke,” he said. “How can almost every disease have some kind of treatment, but ALS have none?” When his young daughter found out her father could no longer speak, she cried for three days. Then she typed him a message on the computer he uses to communicate. “You can teach me things by putting things on the screen and you will always love me, so that’s OK with me,” she wrote. “So that’s all I need to have a good daddy just like you.” “I had an epiphany,” Ohlson said of that exchange. “Nobody wanted to see me die. And I realized in that moment I did not want to leave them.” Ohlson now hopes being open about his suffering will spur action, involvement and understanding about the disease. The key to surviving ALS, he explained, is remaining an active participant in life. Social-networking sites like Facebook, then, have been invaluable tools, allowing him virtually to step outside his confines and connect with the world around him. Enjoy every second, every minute and every day. Cherish your health and recognize how precarious it is. … And always remember: Success is not measured by the possessions you surround yourself with; rather it is measured by the people who choose to surround you.”
Casting Will Ferrell in a dark adaptation of a Raymond Carver story sounded like a pretty intriguing idea when the synopsis for Everything Must Go first surfaced before its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. I’m not here to indulge my desires, to increase my possessions, to impress people to be popular, to prove I’m somebody important, or to promote myself. I’m not here to even be relevant or successful by human standards. I’m here to please You. To live like this, I yield myself to You, to know You, to love You, to obey You, and to grow in your Holy fear. I desire to become a person who understands and lives in reverent awe of You. I’ll do anything that You want me to do, go anywhere that You want me to go and say anything that You want me to say. Father, there isn’t any gift that You have for me that I don’t want. If You want to use me in a way that I’m not used to, I yield myself to that. Today, I affirm my love for You, my God, and I choose to live and minister in Your way.
