National Enquirer Editor Corrupts Impressionable Columbia J-School Students With Stories About Reporting [Barbarians At The Gate]

If you’re a journalism Brahmin who’s simply appalled at the prospect of the National Enquirer winning a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of John Edwards’ atrocious moral life, look out—they’re going after your young now! The high priests of pedigreed journalism-with-a-capital-j gasped at the news earlier this year that the Enquirer was throwing its hat in the ring for a 2009 Pulitzer Prize for its ownership of the John Edwards scandal. Well, it’s too late—the foul tabloid barbarians have already penetrated the barricades of Columbia University ‘s journalism school, the keepers of the hallowed prize. National Enquirer executive editor Barry Levine gave a lecture to journalism graduate students there last week. “Yes, I was in the belly of the beast,” Levine told Gawker. “I had never been there before. I was happy to be greeted by a giant statue of [tabloid progenitor] Joseph Pulitzer, which I thought was appropriate.” Levine had been invited by Columbia professor John Martin to tell the story of his paper’s relentless, three-year pursuit of Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a story that he had virtually to himself for much of that time because “respectable” newspapers didn’t deign to get down in the mud with trivial stories about politicians who cheat on their dying wives and have illegitimate children and attract federal grand jury investigations for paying hush money out of campaign funds. We learned of the visit from Gawker contributor Hunter Walker, a Columbia journalism school student, who spotted a leftover stack of Levine’s business cards and some print-outs of a New York Post story about the Enquirer in one of the school’s classrooms this morning. Like any upstanding member of Columbia’s journalism community, Walker immediately reported the intrusion to a responsible adult grabbed a card for future employment prospects and contacted Gawker. The lesson, apparently, is that Columbia is happy to let the rude, ink-stained wretches of the Enquirer teach its charges the hard-won lessons of how reporting is done, but when it comes to actually honoring that reporting—surely you jest! After initially trying to preemptively blackball the Enquirer based on the preposterous notion that it’s really a magazine, and not a newspaper, the Pulitzer Committee has reportedly relented and will consider its application in earnest . Maybe they’re doing so right now! Jurors are meeting as we speak in the school’s “World Room.” We hope they grabbed one of Levine’s cards on the way to the meeting, because you never know in this economy.

Tiger Woods: In Rehab For Drugs, Not Sex?

Tiger Woods is hiding the real reason he returned to rehab, according to the National Enquirer , which alleges he’s in treatment for drugs, not sex addiction. THG NOTE: As ridiculous as this sounds, one most remember that: The Enquirer outed Tiger and Rachel Uchitel . That was true. The Enquirer is being considered for a Pulitzer Prize (no, really, they are) for coverage of the John Edwards- Rielle Hunter sex and love child scandal. According to the venerable celebrity news publication, Tiger has checked into The Meadows treatment center in Wickenburg, Ariz., to battle his addictions. To prescription medications. Woods made no mention of his drug habit in his 13-minute apology speech , and insiders say wife Elin refused to participate in his sex addiction therapy. We’ll see about that, but “In therapy, Tiger blamed a lot of his behavior on his drug addiction , saying drugs were responsible for impairing his judgment.” The golfer entered The Meadows after therapists who treated him for sex addiction at the Gentle Path program in Hattiesburg, Miss., recommended him. “After Gentle Path, Tiger flew to Arizona for hi interview at The Meadows, which is better equipped to handle rehab for drug addiction and depression.” While calling Tiger a drug addict may be sensationalistic, he was allegedly under the influence of medication when he crashed his car Thanksgiving night. He also liked to rail Rachel Uchitel on Ambien. Just saying.

Tiger Woods: Sex Rehab Cheater?

Stop the presses. The National Enquirer is alleging that Tiger Woods cheated … while in sex addiction rehab. They may be stretching it a little bit here. Sure, the entertainment news rag broke the scandal of Tiger’s affair with Rachel Uchitel, which in turn led to nearly a dozen other affairs unraveling. And sure, they also broke the John Edwards- Rielle Hunter scandal, for which some people think they deserve a Pulitzer Prize (seriously, look that up). But Tiger cheating on Elin Nordegren in sex rehab? Come on. The only reason he’s there is to salvage the marriage she’s somehow still committed to. Such an affair would also be fairly hard to pull off logistically. Nevertheless, a “hostile” Tiger Woods exploded with pent-up rage during sex addiction therapy and treated the program as a joke, The Enquirer says. Maybe they mean “cheating” as in on an exam of some kind. He denied he has a problem, says the tabloid’s source, and worse yet, ridiculed fellow patients and refused to cooperate with his rehab therapists. The disgraced golfer even “treated group therapy with such contempt that he caused one female patient to break down in tears,” the source claims. “What a cheat!” the source said. “Tiger’s so-called sex rehabilitation is a joke. He went into rehab as a sex addict, and he’s leaving rehab as one.” “He has been in complete denial the whole time.” “Tiger isn’t about to change his stripes. As soon as Elin takes her eyes off him, he will be hopping into bed with the first bimbo that catches his eye.” As for the alleged cheating that took place there? They don’t really elaborate on that, but hey. Details, right? Would we doubt it at this point? (Yes.) Will sex addiction rehab help Tiger?
