Well not to be outdone, there’s a father/son duo out of New York who pilfered $41,000 worth of bird. Why? To sell on the street and to competitors of course. Syracuse.com reports: Two employees of a Syracuse restaurant are accused of stealing more than $40,000 in chicken wings and selling them to other restaurants and “on the street” for a poultry sum, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff’s office spokesman Jon Seeber said Paul Rojek, 56, and Joshua Rojek, 33, of Syracuse, billed approximately $41,000 of chicken-wing orders to the Twin Trees Two restaurant’s business account between February and late November. The father-son pair was employed there as cooks, Seeber said. The pair would pick up the orders and re-sell them on the street or to other local establishments for a reduced price. They would later destroy and withhold the sales transactions receipts for those orders, Seeber said. They’re facing charges including grand larceny in the third degree and falsifying business records in the first degree. As with every social media campaign – even ones that raise millions – people move on and attention spans wane as we get saturated with new material. Some things never fail to win over the web, though, such as cats, hot Ryan Gosling photos or drugged-up people after their wisdom teeth get pulled. Paula Deen may have issued an apology for using racial slurs in both her Savannah, Ga., restaurants and also ever in her entire life, but that wasn’t enough for Food Network. Probably because the apology was terrible, but hey, she tried?? Earlier today it was announced that Food Network dropped the butter-loving Southern Belle known for sending love and “best dishes” to her viewers. Deen’s contract will not be renewed when it expires at the end of this month. Deen, who made her mark on the Food Network with her sugary, fat-saturated foods, has faced quite a rocky couple of years, to say the least. First she announced that she had been diagnosed with and battled diabetes and received backlash from critics for not modifying her unhealthy recipes. She went on to slim down with the South Beach diet before being slapped with a lawsuit regarding allegations of sexual harassment in her restaurants by G.M. Lisa Jackson. While Deen denies the sexual harassment, she doesn’t deny using racial slurs, and that, no doubt coupled with her skipped Today Show appearance this morning, landed her in hot water. All of this has left her image and her career in the slop trough, and it was all too much for Food Network, with which she will no longer be associated. It’s going to take more than a pan of brownies to apologize for this one. She’ll be serving up casseroles to everyone else while she eats Humble Pie. The two sides rallied around “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” during which patrons — and protesters — swarmed restaurants Wednesday in response to the company’s support for “the Biblical definition of the family unit.” Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy’s recent comments have sparked a new front in the culture war over gay marriage, and led Democratic mayors Rahm Emanuel of Chicago and Tom Menino of Boston to declare that the company is not welcome in their cities. In response, ex-Arkansas Governor and 2008 GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, now a Fox News host, called on viewers to eat at one of the fast-food joints Wednesday to show support. One member of the skinhead Internet forum Crew38 was already there, according to the SITE Monitoring service, which tracks extremists online. “I had Chick-fil-A today for lunch and it was delicious and non-gay … just how I like it,” one member wrote. Members of the Project 21 black leadership network, a branch of the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research, also backed Huckabee’s call to dine at Chick-fil-A. “Being against gay marriage is not being anti-gay,” said Project 21 member Demetrius Minor. “The last time I checked, Chick-fil-A wasn’t expressing a desire for gays not to eat at their restaurants or seek employment with them.” Both groups rapped the progressive left as hypocritical, alleging it espouses tolerance while not tolerating conflicting views. There’s just one Chick-fil-A in New York City — on the campus of New York University. More than 630,000 visitors pledged online to participate in Huckabee’s event, while his Facebook page included photos of lines snaking out of restaurants around the country. The privately held company would not, however, share sales figures for the day, Chick-fil-A spokeswoman Hannah Wagner told the Daily News.
