Kings Of Leon’s Caleb Followill And Wife Welcome Baby

Dixie Pearl Followill was born on Thursday in Nashville. By Gil Kaufman Lily Aldridge and Caleb Followill Photo: Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill and his wife, model Lily Aldridge , welcomed their first child, Dixie Pearl Followill, on Thursday in Nashville. According to People magazine, the bouncing bundle of joy arrived at the rock-star hour of 1 a.m., weighing a healthy 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 22 inches long. “Mom, dad and baby are happy, healthy and enjoying their new addition,” a spokesperson for the band told the magazine. The couple were married in Santa Barbara, California, in May 2011 at San Ysidro Ranch after dating for more than two years. The birth of the couple’s daughter puts a happy cap on what was, by all accounts, a rather tumultuous year for the Kings. After releasing the Come Around Sundown album to modest reviews and sales, the band picked a fight with “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy (who would subsequently apologize for calling the band “self-centered a–holes”) and released the well-received documentary, “Talihina Sky.” Last summer included a much-publicized incident at a Dallas concert in which Followill claimed to suffer a bout of “heat exhaustion,” leading to the band scrapping the remainder of their U.S. tour and calls from his bandmates to enter rehab to deal with a reported alcohol problem. They returned to the road in September for a run of Canadian shows. They wrapped the year with a tour of Australia and a pair of Grammy nominations: Best Rock Album for Sundown and a Best Long Form Music Video nom for “Talihina Sky.” Related Artists Kings Of Leon

Justin Bieber: Six Degrees Of Believe

MTV News dissects how Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean and Ludacris ended up on Bieber’s new album. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber’s Believe Photo: Justin Bieber reached deep into the hip-hop community for the collaborations on his just-released Believe . But, his producers on the album leave just as much a stamp on the sound of the recording as his lyrical comrades do on what it says. For that reason, while Bieber remains the star of the release, it’s hard not to hear the ladies and gentlemen who worked with the 18-year-old. The collaborations stand as one of the hallmarks of the album. Believe sounds like a who’s who of music’s A-list elite, who give Bieber the backup he needs to make a more mature musical statement . With names like Big Sean, Nicki Minaj, Drake and his old pal Ludacris all making cameos, their appearances are highlighted by production credits with pop and hip-hop masters like Diplo, Rodney Jerkins, the Messengers, Mike Posner, Max Martin and Hit-Boy. Looking at the roster of talent who wanted to work with the maturing pop stud, you find they are mostly artists and producers who have not only been circling Bieber for some time, but also each other. In fact, it’s easy to connect these folks in six degrees of separation: Drake and Nicki Minaj are no strangers to working with one another, having appeared most recently on “Make Me Proud” off Drake’s Take Care . Nicki has also hooked up with Hit-Boy for several tracks on her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded . And, Hit-Boy’s association with G.O.O.D. Music was famously catalogued on Jay-Z’s and Kanye West’s “N—as in Paris,” which makes him a close, personal friend of Big Sean . Big Sean’s Believe track, “As Long As You Love Me,” got the production treatment from Rodney Jerkins , who previously worked with Ludacris on his song “What Them Girls Like,” which brings us back to Bieber: Bieber and Luda originally laid the foundation for a beautiful friendship on the teen’s defining tune “Baby.” Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, explained the generation of all of the collaborations to MTV News: “Kanye was like, ‘You should get Big Sean on that record.’ And we’re close with Sean, and Sean just jumped on there. It was very natural,” Braun recalled. “Luda, of course, we did ‘Baby.’ We played ‘All Around the World,’ and we were like, ‘Who would make sense?’ And Justin’s like, ‘Luda would kill it.’ “Nicki was getting on another one of our records, and then we did ‘Beauty and the Beat,’ and she heard it, and she was like, ‘I want to get on that.’ And, actually, we were gonna put Usher on it at first, but then we heard Nicki’s verse, and we were like, ‘Damn.’ ” Of course, those collaborations came up a bit more spur of the moment, but there’s one that had been long in-the-works. “The Drake thing is something he and Drake have been talking about for like two years,” Braun said. “And then they finally went into the studio, and they wrote that song together. … I’m glad that ‘Right Here’ came about. … Drake was like, ‘I don’t want to do just a rap song. I want to sing with you, do a song for the ladies.’ Everyone seems to love that song.” Which is your favorite collaboration on Believe ? Share your pick below! Nicki Minaj Is ‘Fine As Hell’ In ‘Beez’ Video, 2 Chainz Says

‘She felt more free, I felt more free, that’s how you can see the camaraderie in the video,’ 2 Chainz tells MTV News of Nicki’s ‘Beez in the Trap’ clip. By Rob Markman 2 Chainz Photo: MTV News While filming the “Beez in the Trap” video , it was hard for 2 Chainz to ignore all of Nicki Minaj ‘s assets. Luckily, Deuce is a professional. “I was like, ‘Damn my little sister fine as hell,'” 2 Chainz told MTV News after a taping of MTV2’s upcoming game show “Hip Hop Squares.” Tity Boi then broke down his relationship with the Harajuku Barbie, one that dates back to around 2008. “I’ve known Nicki for a minute; I met her on the I Am Music Tour, the first leg with Wayne. It was cool, we had a great relationship, we used to talk, trip out here and there.” The “Beez” clip was shot in a strip club and features a bikini-clad Minaj counting hundred stacks. By the time 2 Chainz gets to his verse, Nicki grinds alongside him in leopard-print cat suit that accentuates her much-fawned-over rump. 2 Chainz attributes Nicki’s comfort while doing her naughty dance to the closed set. “When it’s closed off, she felt more free, I felt more free, that’s how you can see the camaraderie in the video and how we just kinda vibing with each other,” he said. As for Nicki, the MC just wanted to salute all of the dancers who supported her as she was performing in strip clubs at the beginning of her career. “When I see the strippers and all of that, they always show me love, so I wanted to kinda make a video around them,” the reigning rap queen said. “I hit up Benny Boom like, ‘Yo, I need a sexy video right now.’ I knew 2 Chainz wasn’t gonna be mad.” Deuce, who is preparing his solo debut Based on a T.R.U. Story for an August release on Def Jam, didn’t get to see the video while it was being edited but was very pleased with the result. “I just knew I got a little dance in on her and I’m glad they used it,” he said. “She’s very talented and I support what she’s doin’.” In other Nicki news, the Young Money star disappointed millions of fans when she deactivated her Twitter account on Sunday after feuding with a fansite for posting snippets from her Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded LP . “Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f–king bye,” she wrote before vanishing from the social networking site. Do you like the “Beez in the Trap” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj 2 Chainz

Nicki Minaj Says ‘Hip-Hop Can Never Leave Me’

‘I know I’m always gonna be street, because I can’t pretend to be street,’ Nicki tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj has come a long way since her mixtape days in Queens, New York, but the Young Money star hasn’t forgotten where she came from. In her “Beez in the Trap” video , Nicki the Ninja ditched male alter ego Roman and proved she was all woman as she danced on the video’s strip-club set. “I love my ‘Beez in the Trap’ video. This is my ‘hood video, obviously,” she told MTV News last week after she threw a surprise performance in Times Square . Since her pop success, Nicki has heard all the whispers and criticisms that she may have forgotten her Queens roots. It’s all pretty laughable to rap’s reigning queen. On “Moment 4 Life,” she vowed to never forget her humble beginnings when she spit: ” ‘Cause I’m still hood, Hollywood couldn’t change me.” “What can I say? I don’t know what I gotta do anymore. I don’t know what I can possibly do. What I gotta do? Go and rob a bank?” Nicki asked with a chuckle. No matter her success on the pop charts, Nicki still considers herself hip-hop. On her recently released Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, Ms. Minaj mixed her creative raps with crossover sounds on songs like the RedOne-produced “Starships” and the kinetic “Pound the Alarm.” She’ll never forget her roots, though. “I’m still me, hip-hop culture is still in my heart,” she said. “That can never leave me. “I know I’m always gonna be street, because I can’t pretend to be street. It’s a lot of people walking around here pretending to be that, but I ain’t gonna call nobody out right now.” What’s your favorite track from Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded ? This will be the singer’s fifth straight #1 album, and its sales of 359,000 were more than enough to outpace the #2 debut from fellow veteran Lionel Richie . Richie marks a return to the upper reaches of the charts with his hook-up with country artists on Tuskegee, which sold 199,000 copies, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. With her latest chart-topper, Madonna, 53, joins Barbra Streisand as the only woman to top the Billboard albums chart at least eight times; Streisand holds the record with a total of nine #1 albums. Two seasoned rock bands also debut in the top 10, with Shinedown hitting #4 with Amaryllis (106,000) and the Used returning to the charts at #8 with Vulnerable (32,000). Meanwhile, noisemeisters the Mars Volta land at #15 with their latest, Noctourniquet (21,000). All-American Rejects bop in at #18 with Kids in the Street (18,000), and last season’s “American Idol” winner, Scotty McCreery , got a big boost after appearing on the show last week, sending his debut, Clear as Day, up 46 spots to #21 as sales picked up by 172 percent to 16,000. Nicki Minaj Warns She’ll Never Be ‘One-Dimensional’

‘I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,’ Minaj tells Shade 45’s ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images There’s more to Nicki Minaj than just a pink wig and her funny voices. Rap’s reigning queen has evolved from a budding New York MC to an omnipresent figure in music and pop culture. She’s come a long way since her 2007 Playtime Is Over mixtape. “I think I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,” Nicki told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway when she appeared on his “Sway in the Morning” Shade 45 radio show on Tuesday. Nicki spoke with Sway and co-host Devi Dev about a range of topics — from her over-the-top 2012 Grammy performance to working with Madonna — but Nicki seemed most eager to emphasize that as many strides as she’s made in her career, her superstar qualities were always there on the inside. “You just gotta realize that I’m never gonna be one-dimensional,” she said. “Even my core fans I think, at times, thought I was one-dimensional when I was doing mixtapes. However, even on the mixtapes, I was singing and I did a song called ‘Can Anybody Hear Me’ on one of my mixtapes where I was singing and talking about being a female rapper and trying to get signed.” “Can Anybody Hear Me” appeared on her 2009 tape Beam Me Up Scotty and featured Nicki spitting about her difficulty securing a record deal. Funny when you think about all of the success she’s now obtained. “When it rains, it pours for real/ Def Jam said I’m no Lauryn Hill/ You can’t rap and sing on the same CD/ The public won’t get it, they got A.D.D.,” Nicki rapped back in ’09. Minaj has since broken down those barriers and her latest album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is the ultimate brush-off to naysayers who once told Nicki what she couldn’t do. “It’s just been peeling back the layers and now I think the ultimate layer was me saying, ‘Now I’m gonna do whatever kind of music I want to do and you’re free to not like it,’ ” she said. “This new album, Roman Reloaded, when I tell you I am not nervous, I am not fearful; all of those emotions left.” The Young Money superstar’s second album balances her hard-core rap sensibilities with pop tracks produced by RedOne and Dr Luke. Critics have been lukewarm , but Nicki doesn’t want to choose between the two distinct musical genres; it’s all derived from a feeling, she said. “My story is not gonna always entail a hard hip-hop beat, but sometimes it is,” she explained. “A lot of the tracks on this album are just a hard hip-hop beat and just spittin’ and that’s why I enlisted some people like [Cam’ron] and 2 Chainz and the legendary Nas.” What do you think of Roman Reloaded ?
