FIRST LOOK: ‘Old Boy’ Teaser Poster Counts The Days & Raises Questions

Spike Lee’s   remake of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy doesn’t hit theaters until October, and that just seems way too long to wait. I’m genuinely excited to see what Lee does with the material and am envisioning a revenge (and blood)-soaked 25th Hour .  The good news is that FilmDistrict has finally dropped a tiny morsel from the upcoming film.  The bad news: it’s chicken scratch. The distributor has unveiled a  teaser poster for the film at   CinemaCon , which is taking place in Las Vegas April 15-18 .  The symbolism borrows from Park’s original: they’re the scratches that the imprisoned protagonist Oh Dae-su ( Choi   Min-sik ) uses to keep track of time. That character gets an American makeover in Lee’s version:  He’s now Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), and, according to the official synopsis he’s an advertising executive  “who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.” These clues leave me with a handful of questions, most of them having to do with other plot points from the original that are ripe for homage: 1) There are a lot of advertising executives I’d like to see locked away, but for 20 years?  What did he do, devise those Kia ads with the hipster hamsters ? 2) In the original Oh Dae-su tracked down his captor via the dumplings he was fed in prison every day. If an American comfort food is substituted, what will it be? Macaroni & Cheese? 3) Will the live octopus-eating scene be referenced? (If you haven’t watched the original Oldboy , you should, but, in the meantime, I’ve posted the scene below.) 4) Will incest figure into the plot as it did in the original?  If so, American audiences will squirm enough that reprising the live octopus scene won’t be necessary. 5) Does Lee’s brother  Cinqué Lee have a thing about playing bellhops ? He plays one in this movie, and he played one in Jim Jarmusch’s 1989 film Mystery Train . If you crave more Oldboy  info while you wait for a trailer,  check out my interview with director Park in which he explains why he’s not interested in seeing Lee’s remake until it’s released. WATCH: Robert De Niro & Jane Rosenthal Get Down To Business For 2013 Tribeca Film Festival

This Wednesday kicks off the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival , and I got the chance to sit down with festival co-founders Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal to talk shop.  Now while all film festivals have plenty of business going on behind the scenes, Tribeca puts it front and center with events like its  Future of Film LIVE talks which focus on film distribution.  According to Rosenthal, the festival is geared to reflect the hot topics of conversation in the film industry today:  “We have to look at how the business is changing and how you create is different because of technology…so it’s that merging together of that dialogue.” As for De Niro, he’s looking forward to the screening and discussion of his 1982 film The King of Comedy .  “I haven’t seen it for a long, long time.  And talking with Marty Scorsese about it and answering whatever questions…that will be interesting.” Check out my full interview from below, as well as the festival’s website where they’ll feature live streaming of some events: Follow Grace Randolph on  Twitter . David O. Russell Considering Buddy Cianci Biopic?

Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal said that David O. Russell is considering directing an adaptation of former Providence mayor Buddy Cianci’s book Politics and Pasta , which follows the author’s years of busting mobsters and landing in jail on racketeering charges. Could Rosenthal partner Robert De Niro, who reportedly made a deal with Cianci back in 2008 and may appear in Russell’s Uncharted , help seal the deal — and, perhaps, star as the notorious politician?

The Bachelorette Finale Spoilers Drop Down Reid Rosenthal

CelebrityNews24-7.com » Blog Archive » The Bachelorette Finale …

On last night’s episode of The Bachelorette, Jillian Harris bid farewell to Reid Rosenthal, to the surprise of no one, keeping Ed Swiderski and Kiptyn Locke.

With the exception of Ed’s performance anxiety and the show’s hilarious ways of wording that situation, Monday’s episode was fairly vanilla and predictable.

But now that Reid’s gone and Kiptyn and Ed are the last men standing, The Bachelorette spoilers and rumor mill are starting to go haywire. Ready for this?

If our sources are to be believed

  • Ed Swiderski proposes to Jillian Harris on The Bachelorette season finale in two weeks (next week is the useless “Men Tell All” filler clip show).
  • The “unexpected confession” on the season finale is that Jillian’s just-vanquished “Honey Bear,” Reid Rosenthal, returns to say he loves her.
  • Kiptyn Locke has already been named the next star of The Bachelor.
  • Oh, and Ed may have a girlfriend back home.

First, Reid Rosenthal. You knew after DeAnna Pappas told The Bachelor star Jason Mesnick she “made a mistake” – this even before he chose Melissa Rycroft and dumped her for Molly Malaney – that The Bachelorette finale would include some stunt.

Reid coming back to Hawaii to profess his love for Jillian Harris, which he just couldn’t quite do all season long and resulted in demise, makes perfect sense.

But is it too little, too late? Is it completely contrived? Probably. But is there a chance Reid can come back and steal this title in dramatic fashion? Sure.

It would certainly be a stunning (albeit blatantly scripted) conclusion that would fall short of the Jason-Molly-Melissa drama, but not by too much.

An email was sent asking “So I guess we’re seeing other people now.” Ed responded with “No, I just need to wait until this show is over.” This girlfriend of Ed’s is under the assumption they are still together and she just has to wait out the show.

As for Kiptyn Locke, he has been rumored to have signed a deal to be the new star of The Bachelor for some time now. Mr. Perfect certainly looks and acts the part, making some fans wonder if he was being groomed for this all along.

Finally, Ed Swiderski having a girlfriend in Chicago?

A shaky rumor, to be sure, but our man Reality Steve has never been wrong before, so his Bachelorette spoilers have to be taken semi-seriously …

Jilli

The blogger reports that Ed Swiderski left a female in Chicago high and dry – a girl who “without a doubt” was Ed’s girlfriend before he left for The Bachelorette.

This girl was under the assumption they were dating when he left to film the show. He came back to Chicago (after bailing on Jillian) then went AWOL again.

An email was sent asking “So I guess we’re seeing other people now.” Ed responded with “No, I just need to wait until this show is over.” This girlfriend of Ed’s is under the assumption they are together and she just has to wait out the show.

Shady stuff if that’s true. Wouldn’t it be wild if Wes Hayden drama was manufactured and it turned out to be Ed with a girlfriend back home – who came back to bite him? Or if all this were a red herring and Kiptyn ends up winning?
