Surprise! Ethan Hawke Haunted House Horror Sinister Sneaks At SXSW

Three days into SXSW and the biggest winner so far has been Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s geek-pleasing meta-horror pic Cabin in the Woods , which Lionsgate releases in April. But also in town in search of a SXSW buzz bump is Lionsgate/Summit’s Ethan Hawke -starring haunted house pic Sinister , which debuted as a “secret screening” Saturday night – not the most spectacular secret title possible, especially in contrast to hopeful speculation for a sneak Avengers or Hunger Games debut, and not entirely secret , but fine enough. Sinister , set for release in October, stars Hawke as a novelist so desperate for inspiration that he moves his family into a house whose former inhabitants were recently murdered; he discovers mysterious Super 8 snuff films but begins to lose his grip as the spooky supernatural truth behind the killings emerges. The early consensus here is that Hawke’s performance is impressively moody and the scares effective, but Sinister remains within the constraints of the haunted house subgenre, for better and for worse . But would Sinister have made a great festival secret screening if not for its pedigree? Screenwriter C. Robert Cargill (AKA “Massawyrm”) is a contributor to Ain’t It Cool News, which hosts the annual secret screening sidebar, director Scott Derrickson ( The Day the Earth Stood Still , The Exorcism of Emily Rose ) has at least some genre cred to his name, and producer Jason Blum is one of the masterminds behind the recent wave of modestly-budgeted hit horror acquisitions, having produced the Paranormal Activity films and last year’s Insidious . Cabin in the Woods may have earned the more effusive praise but Sinister seems poised to reap greater benefits from its SXSW debut, considering that it wasn’t on anyone’s radar beforehand. Now instead of being that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release, it can at least claim to be that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release that played decently to the early birds. We’ll see in seven months if Sinister can play to audiences this well and garner Lionsgate/Summit their own PA / Insidious -style hit. Read more from SXSW 2012 .

REVIEW: Overstyled Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life Fumbles Singer-Songwriter’s Myth

The bold, relatively brief life of Serge Gainsbourg, the French singer, songwriter and svengali who died in 1991, is twice removed from the story told by Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life . First-time writer and director Joann Sfar has said that polishing the fine points of that life — ceding to biographical “truth” — was of no interest to him. A top-flight fan and best-selling comic book artist, Sfar was intent on avoiding the brash outlines of a biopic in favor of a certain sort of homage, the tender evocation of style and personality in place of strict chronology and narrative arc. A parallel determination to inhabit his hero’s life with an intensely personal, interpretive gusto bends the film back into a more conventional shape; the big moments play out with the giddy gratification of fan fiction. Both abstract and very specific, Sfar’s inspirations abound such that they frequently overshadow those of his subject.

Seth Rogen and Will Reiser on 50/50 and How Life Sometimes Needs a Rewrite

They say to write what you know. Unfortunately, in the case of screenwriter Will Reiser, what he knew was cancer. Six years ago, Reiser was diagnosed with cancer in his back, and — after surgery to remove the tumor — decided to handle the life-changing situation the only way he knew how: by finding the humor. Thus, 50/50 was born.

Twilight Filmmakers Beg Fans to Stop Looking at Leaked Breaking Dawn Sex Photos

Yesterday, tragedy struck the production of Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn in the form of leaked stills depicting Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) consummating their relationship between the sheets. Movieline wondered whether the raciness of the images might actually win the franchise more fans but it appears the production team isn’t willing to take that risk.

Thia Megia, Naima Adedapo ‘Intimidated’ By Female ‘American Idol’ Voters

‘When they get a crush … then we’re done,’ Adedapo says of three consecutive male ‘Idol’ champs. By Gil Kaufman Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo Photo: FOX It hasn’t escaped the attention of the female contestants on “American Idol” that a woman hasn’t won the reality competition in three seasons. And they can’t help but notice that so far in season 10, the bottom three has had an excess of estrogen. But on Friday (April 1), one night after becoming the third and fourth female casualties so far this year, Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo weren’t making any excuses. “We sort of figured since there were more females watching this show the votes were going to be more for the guys,” Megia, 16, the youngest contestant in “Idol” history, said during a conference call with reporters. And while she made a point to give props to the “incredible” guy singers left on the show, Megia admitted that the ladies of “Idol” had discussed the potential pitfalls of the large female voting bloc and were a bit worried about how that might impact their stay in the leaky “Idol” mansion. “[We were] a bit intimidated by all the girls watching the show and knowing that their votes are going to be going for guys,” said Megia, who was done in on Thursday night’s elimination show by her tepid rendition of Elton John’s “Daniel,” which she dedicated to her older brother. Though she echoed that concern, Adedapo said the girls didn’t let it get to them because they all had faith in their abilities. “When it comes down to it, the reality is that more than 50 percent of the audience is little teenage girls,” said Adedapo, who may have confused some of those tweens with her reggae take of “I’m Still Standing.” “When they get a crush … then we’re done.” Despite that worry, Adedapo said she never let it knock her off her unique path on the show, during which she incorporated her colorful style and years of dance experience. “Sometimes people just didn’t know where to place me,” Adedapo admitted when asked if perhaps she was a bit too different on a season with less outrageous personalities and more focused vocalists. “I felt like maybe they didn’t understand me sometimes,” she said, noting that most of the reaction she got from fans was positive and to the effect of “I don’t know about you, but I like you.” But between her African dance moves and her reggae accent on Wednesday night’s show, Adedapo said maybe it was hard to put her in a neat category that made it easy to cast a vote. Song choice is such a crucial factor that Megia wondered in retrospect if maybe she had made a mistake by not mixing it up and moving away from ballads every week to show another side of herself with an uptempo number. What she didn’t regret was sending her rendition of “Daniel” out to her brother and pouring all her emotion into that tune. “I’m glad the last song I did on the show was dedicated to my brother,” she said. “[But] I didn’t want to come off as just a ballad singer.” Like many “Idol” finalists who leave early, Megia copped to being “devastated” on Thursday night when her ride ended but said she didn’t cry for more than 15 minutes or so. “I just told myself things happen for a reason and this is not the end of it,” she said, promising that the exposure she got on the show will help her launch a career where she can show America that she’s much more than just the high school balladeer. One of the big subjects of conversation on Friday was the nearly out-of-control emotions fellow teenager Lauren Alaina displayed during the eliminations, which verged on distracting. Adedapo said part of that was Lauren’s sadness at losing out on someone who had been a kind of mother figure to her during the finals run. “She kind of cried it out a little big, but that’s a natural thing,” Adedapo said, explaining that she’s always been there to encourage Alaina to have confidence in herself and tell her that she’s beautiful and talented. But losing Megia was a double blow, since the two 16-year-olds had gotten very close during their rehearsals and classes. “It really is like losing a best friend,” said Adedapo, who struggled to say goodbye to her pal Jacob Lusk as well. No matter what happens, both said they were proud of what they did on the show and they’re looking forward to the next step. “I just wanted to show every piece of me,” Adedapo said of her risk-taking performances. “For me, I’m really about staying true to myself. Once I set my brain on something, I do it.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday on MTV.com, following the “American Idol” results show, for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty ! ‘Breaking Dawn’ Leaked Photos Leave Studio ‘Heartbroken’

Summit Entertainment addresses the leaks in a statement on Facebook. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit Entertainment When very steamy photos of Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) on their honeymoon hit the Web, they were pretty much immediately scrubbed from the internet. The “Breaking Dawn” production photos, along with ones in which Bella appeared to have been through some sort of vampire transformation (her eyes were amber-colored) had fans drooling for more and left the studio fuming mad. “As some of you may know, pictures and screen grabs of ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ as a work in progress have leaked on the Internet. We are extremely proud of this film and also extremely heartbroken to see it out there at this stage,” reads a Facebook message from Summit Entertainment. “The film and these images are not yet ready or in their proper context. They were illegally obtained and their early dissemination is deeply upsetting to the actors, the filmmakers and Summit who are working so hard to bring these movies to fruition to you in November 2011 and November 2012.” The letter, signed by author Stephenie Meyer, director Bill Condon, producer Wyck Godfrey and Summit Entertainment, asks that the photos no longer be shared online. “Please, for those who are posting, stop. And please, though the temptation is high, don’t view or pass on these images. Wait for the film in its beautiful, finished entirety to thrill you.” Summit released a photo of Bella clutching feathers in bed last November, and when a pic of Edward and Bella in bed together hit the Net, fans immediately went bananas. The whole ordeal made Pattinson chuckle . “It’s always awkward, in a way, doing it with anybody,” he admitted to MTV News about having to shoot sex scenes. “But at the same time … it really depends on how it’s staged and stuff. It’s like doing Twister.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . It Might Be Harder to Erase China From Red Dawn Than You Thought

Earlier this week it was reported that the filmmakers behind Red Dawn were going to replace mentions of China with North Korea, in an effort to make the long-shelved remake more sellable to the “Asian superpower.” It turns out that might be difficult. In a spoiler-heavy review, the website Libertas reveals that the crux of the film deals with China invading America to “collect” on the debt owed by years of borrowing. Kinda hard to imagine North Korea having the same aspirations, isn’t it? [ Libertas via The Playlist ]
