When the teaser trailer for Killer Elite arrived in June , it presented a wealth of ridiculous awesomeness (Jason Statham jumping out a window while attached to an interrogation chair) and even more ridiculous facial hair (Clive Owen’s villainous moustache; Robert De Niro’s Saddam Hussein beard). Both traits are still present in the new full-length trailer, as well as a host of clichéd one-liners that would even make Arnold Schwarzenegger groan with delight. The Amazing Spider-Man has gotten its first teaser trailer, with the director behind 500 Days of Summer, Marc Webb and The Social Network actor, Andrew Garfield taking the franchise in a different direction. The movie has had an enormous budget and is meant to be a tent-pole, huge 3D, action-packed movie, but the teaser (for me at least) just doesn’t do it justice. Is Gary Oldman Having a Moment?

As you saw in the underwhelming teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises , it wasn’t Christian Bale, Tom Hardy or Anne Hathaway who got a majority of the 90-second screen time — it was Gary Oldman. (And the disembodied voice of Liam Neeson.) Oldman’s wheezing and battered-looking Commissioner Gordon told an off-screen Batman about “evil” and all the other mumbo-jumbo that old wheezing men in hospital beds go on about, and basically stole the show. The renowned character actor is also front-and-center on the U.K. poster for Tinker Tailor Solider Spy , with a headshot usually reserved for A-listers like Will Smith or Russell Crowe. Which raises the question: Is Gary Oldman having a moment?

No one will ever argue that this past weekend was Pixar’s best, as Cars 2 opened with a solid but not overwhelming take and a fairly dismal critical reception.
