Superhero flick trails behind two James Cameron blockbusters in the first and second all-time-gross spots. By Terri Schwartz Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson in the “Avengers” Photo: Marvel Watch out James Cameron because “The Avengers” is coming for you next. Marvel’s all-star team of superheroes has officially become the number-three highest-grossing movie of all time in the United States as well as worldwide, besting “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” for the honor. As of June 1, the movie made $538 million domestically and $1.3 billion worldwide, placing it behind only Cameron’s “Titanic” and “Avatar.” That’s not the only number-three spot “The Avengers” is in. “Snow White and the Huntsman” has debuted with a strong $20 million Friday gross in its debut weekend, knocking “Men in Black 3” from its top spot last weekend. “MIB3” came in second on Friday with an $8.3 million intake, while “The Avengers” rounded out the top three with $5.7 million. In all likelihood, that ranking will be indicative of the rest of the weekend as well. Considering “The Avengers” has been in theaters for a month, that’s some pretty strong continued momentum. We’ll attribute some of it to fans wanting to support their favorite Avengers going into the 2012 MTV Movie Awards weekend. Captain America and Thor are facing off against each other in the Best Hero category, but they’ve got some stiff competition in the form of Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen and “21 Jump Street” ‘s Jenko. There’s only a very slim chance that “The Avengers” will climb any higher on the all-time box-office charts. In the U.S., it would have to top $659 million to oust Cameron’s “Titanic” and cross $761 million to beat “Avatar.” And it seems even less likely that it will pass either of those movies worldwide, as it would have to more than double its international grosses. Still, not too shabby for Marvel’s group of superheroes. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘The Avengers’ Related Photos ‘Avengers’ Snow White And The Huntsman
Oliver Cooper is desperate to win the Best Onscreen Dirtbag prize at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Oliver Cooper Photo: MTV News Oliver Cooper wants your vote! The “Project X” star is nominated for a couple of MTV Movie Awards , but it’s the Best Onscreen Dirtbag prize that he’s really after. While promoting this year’s awards show, Cooper petitioned America for their vote. “Listen. Is America listening right now? I want you to vote for me for Best Onscreen Dirtbag because, truly, I am a dirtbag,” he said. This isn’t the first time Cooper has tried to swing the vote . But instead of pointing out why the other contenders — including Colin Farrell, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Aniston — shouldn’t get the award, he explains why he thinks he should. “I f—ed up an entire neighborhood. I didn’t care about my friends. I still don’t care about those guys, OK? What else did I do in that movie? I don’t even remember. It’s all a blur. I don’t even care about the movie — that’s how much of a dirtbag I am,” he said. “I just want that goddamn popcorn, so I can have a career.” That’s when things start to get a little sad. Cooper explains how he’s at the brink of bursting out into Hollywood and needs a Golden Popcorn to help get him there. “Everybody else out there, they’ve got careers, they’re doing movies all over the world. Me? I’m living with my aunt right now. In Encino,” he said. “I’m Jewish, but I haven’t been to temple in over three years. Honestly, I’m a little confused. I don’t have a girlfriend. Recently, the girls I’ve been seeing, they don’t even speak English. Seriously. And that’s because I don’t want to talk to them.” And that’s where it all comes together for Cooper: managing to make us feel bad for him while reviling him at the same time. “I’m a dirtbag,” he promised. “I’m America’s dirtbag.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ star tells MTV News her favorite British slang is ‘a really good word.’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: MTV News We didn’t quite know what we were getting ourselves into when we asked Kristen Stewart to name her favorite British slang word. The actress spent a while perfecting her British accent in anticipation of “Snow White and the Huntsman,” and between that practice and her British boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, we were sure Stewart had learned a phrase or five that she was partial to. But we should have realized where she was headed when she told MTV News that she was being “way too honest here” during her Sneak Peek Week interview. That’s right: KStew’s favorite British word is “cu–.” She defended it, saying, “You go over there [to England], and it’s a very different effect. It’s fun. It’s good.” Sure, we would have gone with “arse” or “wicked” or “innit,” but we sort of get where Stewart was coming from in her preferential colloquialism. As her “Snow White” co-star Sam Claflin said, “[‘Cu–‘]’s become the new ‘mate.’ ” The conversation could have ended there, but Stewart added that her favorite way to use the “C” word is by adding an “-ing” to the end. “Add an ‘-ing’ to it — this is terrible — I heard some really down English crazy guy, on our crew actually, really angry, adding the ‘-ing,’ ” she explained. “It’s a really good word.” What about Claflin’s favorite American word? Apparently, that’s an easy question. “Aluminum. Garage. Trash,” he said with a laugh. “The list is endless.” Fortunately, you won’t hear the pair saying any of those words in “Snow White and the Huntsman,” which hit theaters Friday (June 1). But at least now we have a better idea of what Stewart and Pattinson are whispering in each other’s ears in all those paparazzi photos. Hough and Diego Boneta tackle the Foreigner classic in this Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week clip. By Terri Schwartz Julianne Hough in “Rock of Ages” Photo: Warner Bros. There was only one way to end Movie Awards Sneak Peek Week , and that was to go out with a bang — a rock-and-roll bang with “Rock of Ages.” Stars Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Malin Akerman and director Adam Shankman are on hand to answer a 30-minute Q&A following the movie, but not before they introduced a brand-new clip from “Rock of Ages” for our viewing pleasure. So feast your eyes on the beginning of Hough and Boneta’s rousing take on Foreigner’s “Jukebox Hero.” Clearly some sparks are flying between Hough’s Sherrie Christian and Boneta’s Drew Boley as they search for the right vinyl to buy in a record store. Sherrie’s eyes light up when Drew admits that he wants to be the next Stacee Jaxx, though we’re not sure how Stacee Jaxx feels about that goal. That admission prompts the duo to jump into a stirring, head-banging interpretation of “Jukebox Hero.” Though it’s only a brief tease — they don’t even get to the chorus! — we know from the track list for the soundtrack that this song is actually a medley with Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin’s take on “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Now that’s something we’re dying to see. We’re expecting lots of “Rock of Ages” references during the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , what with Brand hosting . The Brit is known for his tendency to go off the wall while hosting MTV awards shows, so we’re hoping he pulls the during the Movie Awards. MTV News caught up with the Beastie Boys on New Year’s Eve in 1986, just before they were hitting the road with Madonna. By Terri Schwartz The Beastie Boys in 1987 Photo: Getty Images “I’d just like to say that we, the Beastie Boys, are putting rock and roll back into rock and roll, and doing just what you, the listeners, want to hear! Yeah!” That’s the promise Adam Yauch made to MTV News back in 1986, and it’s a promise the Beastie Boys have followed through on ever since. The news of Yauch’s death meant the passing of a rock and hip-hop legend, and MTV News has spent the day honoring and remembering a man who has given us so much. Our hour-long special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy” took viewers back to 1986, to a time when the Beastie Boys had just released License to Ill to international critical acclaim and commercial success. MTV News caught up with Yauch, Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz — better known as MCA, Mike D and Ad-Rock — on New Year’s Eve at MTV’s sixth annual Rock and Roll Ball. They were riding high, and they promised that the next year would be even better. “In 1987, the Beastie Boys are going to be taking over America!” MCA promised. “America, watch out, because we’ve got a new show … ” ” … And lots of stuff!” Ad-Rock added, before all three of them started yelling, “Yeah!” and banging their heads together. The Boys were gushing about their upcoming shows and how they were going to treat their fans to the performances of their lives. It’s funny now hearing them talk about opening for Madonna, because they have since become such an important act that we can’t imagine them opening for anyone. When asked how their show in Iowa was going to go over, Yauch answered, “Well, I think our show’s going to go over … ” ” … Very good!” Horovitz piped up. “Very well, thank you!” Diamond finished. As they promised, 1987 was a big year for the Beastie Boys, and 1988 was even bigger. They put out their second album, Paul’s Boutique, that year, and it’s since been considered one of their strongest records. With each passing year, the Beastie Boys became bigger and bigger, and they likely would still be making music today had Yauch not tragically been diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He was unable to attend the group’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony last month, which sparked concerns about his health. He died after a lengthy battle with cancer of the parotid salivary gland and leaves behind his wife, Dechen Wangdu, and daughter, Tenzin Losel.
