Top Ten Summer Video Games: What Will You Play?

We are in the midst of summer and while the fall and holiday times are the more traditional big video game release times, summer has some gems as well. So I present – My Top Ten Summer Games!!!  And the crowd goes wild!!! Okay, let’s do this. 10.  NHL14  — September 10th NHL 14 Trailer (Official) Had you told me yesterday that  NHL14 would even come close to a “most anticipated” list, I would have laughed in your face. Now? Well thanks to the   NHL94  Anniversary mode trailer this quickly became a most wanted. 9.   Payday 2 — August 13th Payday 2 Trailer I really enjoyed the first  Payday and this sequel would be higher up on the list if I didn’t already play the stealth mission based, Hitman . That and I just can not get past the fact that you are able to still hold a gun with two hands while carrying a body. 8.   Young Justice: Legacy — September 30th Young Justice Legacy Trailer I know September 30th is a bit beyond “summer” but as a cartoon based game it just has more of a summer feel to it. I was absolutely crushed when Cartoon Network canceled  Young Justice . Very disheartening. So, now I’m putting  Young Justice: Legacy on this list just so I can spend some more time with Superboy and his friends. 7.  The Wonderful 101 — September 15th The Wonderful 101 E3 Trailer (Wii U) I don’t even have a Wii U, but I still want to play this game. Little bit of  StarCraft mixed with a dash of  Power Rangers and this just looks like fun. I can’t imagine I’ll go out and get a Wii U for just one game but eh, we’ll see. 6.   Diablo 3 — September 3rd Diablo 3 Trailer I know, trust me I know. I tried to not include this. I scratched it out in my notes at least four times. I just can’t help it. I already play  Diablo 3 on the PC, I already play  Torchlight on the XBox, why on earth is  Diablo 3 on a top ten list? I’m a Blizzard fangirl. As hard as I try not to be, it is what it is. 5.  Rayman Legends — September 3rd Rayman Legends E3 Trailer (Wii U) I’m almost 35, so when I first started playing video games, there wasn’t any of this open world business. You went where the game told you and you would like it. You couldn’t even go backwards. I think that’s why I’m looking forward to the side-scrolling  Rayman Legends. 4.   Disney Infinity — August 18th Disney Infinity Trailer Let’s just head it off at the pass –  Disney Infinity  was announced way back in 2010 long before  Skylanders came out so it isn’t some Skylanders knock-off. I have no shame in being a grown ass adult looking forward to buying toys for my video game. No shame at all. 3.  GTA V — September 3rd Grand Theft Auto V Trailer I touched (okay, more than touched) on it when talking about this Grand Theft Auto V gameplay trailer , but I’m looking forward to this merely because a.) it’s  GTA and b.) I really want to see this leisure business. I want to go paragliding or whatever else they have in store. 2.   Civilization 5: Brave New World  — July 9th Civilization V: Brave New World Trailer I have Sid Meier’s name tattooed to my ass like Xavier Roberts’ to that of a Cabbage Patch doll. No, I don’t, but never say never! I love the  Civilization series in all of its forms and  Brave New World looks like another fun expansion pack. 1.   Kingdom Hearts 1.5 Remix  — September 10th Kingdom Hearts Trailer If you haven’t played  Kingdom Hearts before and are wondering how on earth a remix would make the top of any list, then you need to get this game. No really, you  need to. Great storylines, great characters, great gameplay. There is a reason that there were so many people who absolutely freaked when it was announced there would be a  Kingdom Hearts   3.  It is that good. So that’s my top ten – what’d I miss? Have a game you’re looking forward to that I need to be playing this summer? Let me know down in the comments.

David Cronenberg Talks ‘Cosmopolis,’ High Frame Rates, And ‘Bullshit’ Oscars

2012 brought us two whacked-out limousine-set films from auteurs bearing all the markings of future cult classics. But while Leos Carax’s Holy Motors received universal critical praise, David Cronenberg ‘s Robert Pattinson -starring Cosmopolis left critics a little more divided , although how anyone could dislike a film featuring an R-Pattz prostate exam is one of life’s great mysteries. Movieline spoke with Cronenberg, a man who at this point seems physically incapable of tolerating bullshit, about his career, Oscar hopes and realities, and new advances like the High Frame Rate Peter Jackson used on The Hobbit . Along the way he riffed hypothetical on what he’d do for awards season glory, assessed the comfortable niche he’s carved out for himself on the fringes of the studio system, and revealed what he really thinks about… cats. Happy New Year! The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn’t bug you too much that this film isn’t being discussed more as a contender. Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it’s been very easy because we haven’t been nominated for any awards. It’s not sour grapes, it’s not compensation; it’s a relief. It’s very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won’t be watching any of the awards shows. It’s not just showing up that night, there’s months of campaigning. Oh, yes. I’ve talked with several people, one of whom was Denys Arcand, a French Canadian director who won the Best Foreign Language Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions — I know him well. He said he would never, ever do it again. He said it was a year, an incredibly intense year, and ultimately rather boring. Because he’s not doing anything creative at all, just selling. For a guy like Denys Arcand, though, does an award affect his bottom line? Does it affect his career? Will he be able to buy a new house after winning? No, not really. On the contrary, it’s caused him to retreat. He’s decided he doesn’t want to be involved in anything remotely Hollywood. He wants to make Quebecois films. He attempted to make some movies in English with emerging stars and it was a disaster — it’s not his sensibility. For an actor, though, perhaps it’s a different story. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for some of your films, Keira Knightley was discussed for A Dangerous Method . But let’s say she had won — would that have elevated her, and gotten her roles she wouldn’t have gotten otherwise? I don’t think so. She’s incredibly sought after — despite the fact that the British critics are often on her, but they like to eat their own, let’s face it. She’s too smart and beautiful and too talented, it drives them crazy. I don’t see [an award] doing anything for her. End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema ‘s top ten of the year. Yes and on Sight and Sound ‘s list, as well. So the snooty-pants Euros are digging the movie. And, it’ll no doubt end up somewhere on my top 20, I think. [Note: it came in at #12.] If I gave you money would you put it higher? No. Well? Depends how much money. C’mon, let’s talk. A hundred grand goes a long way. Would you give me a hundred grand to write that Cosmopolis is the best movie of the year? No! [Laughs.] But it’s a thought. Let’s be honest — at this stage in your career, let’s say you met the most reputable critic in the world, you met him at a bar and he said, “Oh, man, I’m in a real money crunch right now, I will make Cosmopolis my #1 of the year for X amount of dollars,” do you consider it for a second? No. But that’s because I’m too cheap. But… fact is, I have been on those lists, New York Times has been very positive on my last few movies, we got three great reviews from three critics at the New York Times for A Dangerous Method . But we still didn’t get…[laughs]…it didn’t… Still nobody in the States sees your damn movies, it’s Europeans only! That’s right. It doesn’t do much. But, listen, you like the validation, especially when they are intelligent people who write beautifully and when they applaud your movie it is terrific and gratifying. Pragmatically, it doesn’t do much. Better to get good reviews over bad, obviously, but we all know terrible movies that got terrible reviews that made a lot of money. There’s no one to one relationship. You just have to get very ’60s… just go with the flow.

‘Twilight’ Number One At The Box Office As Newcomers Fizzle

Newcomers Killing Them Softly and The Collection bowed soft over the weekend, with the latter barely making it into the top ten. Holdovers including Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 , Skyfall and Lincoln remained the top three pics domestically. The Weinstein Company’s Silver Linings Playbook , meanwhile, placed just outside the top ten over the weekend, though the Oscar hopeful played in comparatively far fewer locations and is showing strength as it continues to roll out slowly. 1. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Gross: $17,410,000 (Cume: $254.6 million) Screens: 4008 (PSA: $4,344) Week: 3 (Change: – 60%) Number one for three weeks, the final Twilight scored the top spot after a weak showing from newcomers. The feature dropped 62 locations from its second weekend and its $4,344 average was significantly lower than its $10,723 showing in week 2. Still, it is a bit better off than its previous installments and is within $1 million from matching New Moon . 2. Skyfall Gross: $17 million (Cume: $246 million) Screens: 3,463 (PSA: $4,909) Week: 4 (Change: – 52%) The highest grossing Bond film continues to show strength one month into its U.S. run. The pic averaged a solid $4,909, compared to Twilight ‘s $4,344 average in its third week, though it is in 545 fewer theaters. Globally, Skyfall has grossed over $869 million, a good return for its $200 million budget. A $300 million domestic run is not out of the question. 3. Lincoln Gross: $13,509,000 (Cume: $83,698,000) Screens: 2,018 (PSA: $6,694) Week: 4 (Change: – 47%) Steven Spielberg’s big Oscar contender remained in the same number of theaters in its third weekend, though its per screen average was almost halved from the previous weekend’s $12,724. Still, it had the highest PSA in the top 10 for the weekend. Its nearly $83.7 million gross is outpacing the filmmaker’s 2011 movies The Adventures of Tintin ($77.6 million) and War Horse ($79.9 million). 4. Rise of the Guardians Gross: $13,500,000 (Cume: $48,947,253) Screens: 3,672 (PSA: $3,676) Week: 2 (Change: – 43%) The Paramount/Dreamworks animation added 19 theaters and remained fourth in the overall top ten. Still, it will struggle to reach $100 million. 5. Life of Pi Gross: $12 million (Cume: $48,361,141) Screens: 2,018 (PSA: $4,098) Week: 2 (Change: -46.6%) The Ang Lee 3-D feature added just one location over the weekend, rounding out the top 5, though. Globally, it has grossed nearly $109 million ($60,500,000) abroad and is said to be performing well. 6. Wreck-It Ralph Gross: $7,020,000 (Cume: $158,257,000) Screens: 3,087 (PSA: $2,274) Week: 5 (Change: – 57.6%) The animated feature remained at the sixth position, though dropped 172 locations and had a fairly steep 57-plus percent drop from the week prior. Its $2,274 average compares to $5,085 last week and $5,131 the week before that. Still, it’s had a good run and combined with foreign box office of $44 million, it topped the $200 million mark over the weekend. 7. Killing Them Softly Gross: $7 million Screens: 2,424 (PSA: $2,888) Week: 1 The Cannes 2012 feature is one of Brad Pitt’s worse performing openings ever, though not as bad as The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford which only made $3.9 million. The pic should fade from theaters soon. 8. Red Dawn Gross: $6,550,000 (Cume: $31,322,708) Screens: 2,781 (PSA: $2,355) Week: 2 (Change: – 54%) The film had a relatively steep 54% decline in gross compared to its first weekend, though it added 57 more venues. Its $2,355 average compares to its $5,241 opening. It may struggle to match its $65 million production budget domestically. 9. Flight Gross: $4,540,000 (Cume: $81,526,836) Screens: 2,603 (PSA: $1,744) Week: 5 (Change: – 46.3%) Flight shed 35 theaters in its fifth week after adding locations over the past month. Still, the Denzel Washington-starrer has performed well at the box office with a domestic come over $81.5 million vs its $31 million production budget. It may be a reach to hit the $100 million mark. 10. The Collection Gross: $3,409,224 Screens: 1,403 (PSA: $2,430) Week: 1 In its debut, The Collection barely made it into the top ten and its nearly $3.41 million opening is slightly off from its predecessor, The Collector ‘s 2009 $3.57 million bow. 11. Silver Linings Playbook Gross: $3,341,000 (Cume: $10,990,981) Screens: 371 (PSA: $9,005) Week: 3 (Change: – 23.8%) Though not in the top ten, The Weinstein Company’s Oscar hopeful Silver Linings Playbook has continued to gain traction after an opening that was a bit of a disappointment. It ranked 11th for the weekend, though it is in far fewer theaters than titles in the top ten and its $9,005 average was far better than any in the top ten. Word-of-mouth is clearly driving the title.

Argo Tops A Disappointing Box Office; 4 Newcomers Bow Weak

All four studio releases debuted with a whimper at best and tanked at worst. Ben Affleck ‘s Argo topped the box office in a disappointing weekend. It is hard to estimate the impact on the onslaught of Hurricane Sandy had on Sunday on the East Coast as residents scurried to get ready for the storm, but the weekend’s box office took a hit nevertheless. Strong word-of-mouth made Argo one of the lone stars of the weekend. 1. Argo Gross: $12,355,000 (Cume: $60,780,288) Screens: 2,855 (PSA: $4,327) Week: 3 (Change: – 24.9%) Argo finally made it to number one three weeks into its release. But it was mostly by default because its competition from newcomers failed to make the box office grade. Still, Argo showed bravado on its own, with only a small dip in its returns, despite losing 392 locations. Word of mouth is clearly propelling the Ben Affleck-directed political thriller that is a strong contender for awards this season. A $100 million gross is certainly not out of the question. 2. Hotel Transylvania Gross: $9.5 million (Cume: $130,434,000) Screens: 3,276 (PSA: $2,900) Week: 5 (Change: – 26.9%) The animated feature jumped from fourth place last week to second in its fifth round. The $130 million-plus cumulative makes it one of Sony Pictures Animation’s top animated-only pic. It will eventually overtake The Smurfs , which grossed $142.6 million. 3. Cloud Atlas Gross: $9.4 million Screens: 2,008 (PSA: $4,681) Week: 1 Six slightly connected stories told over two hours and forty-four minutes was bound to be a marketing challenge. The pic received a C+ CinemaScore, so it’s going to be a steep trek for this $100 million movie sees any profit. Its recognizable cast should help it as it heads overseas. While it’s the best of the weekend’s newcomers, it clearly didn’t connect with audiences at the level needed. 4. Paranormal Activity 4 Gross: $8,675,000 (Cume: $42,632,365) Screens: 3,412 (PSA: $2,542) Week: 2 (Change: – 70.1%) The pic fell a heavy 70% from its opening weekend when it opened at number one with a $30.2 million open and an $8,851 screen average. The drop was steeper than Paranormal Activity 3 ‘s 66 percent drop. The third installment had grossed about $10 million more than the current pic by this point in its release. 5. Silent Hill: Revelation (3-D) Gross: $8 million Screens: 2,933 ($2,728) Week: 1 A weak opening for the pic, which is off 60 percent from the first movie’s $20.15 million debut. Competition from Paranormal Activity 4 and Sinister likely weighed in in suppressing box office activity for the title. 6. Taken 2 Gross: $8 million (Cume $117,389,000) Screens: 2,995 (PSA: $2,671) Week: 4 (Change: – 39.7%) The title lost 494 theaters compared to its third weekend and essentially tied with newcomer Silent Hill: Revelation (3-D) in the overall box office chart. Taken 2 is holding solid, beating out the first installment by $22 million. 7. Here Comes the Boom Gross: $5.5 million (Cume: $30,610,472) Screens: 2,491 (PSA: $2,208) Week: 3 (Change: – 34.6%) The film remained in seventh place in the b.o. chart, dropping over 34% and losing 523 theaters. Last weekend it averaged $2,820 compared to $3,981 in its debut. 8. Sinister Gross: $5.07 million (Cume: $39,514,955) Screens: 2,347 (2,160) Week: 3 (Change: – 42.5%) The title dropped 195 theaters in its third round and dropped a fairly strong 42 percent plus. But with a production budget of only $3 million, the title is a clear success and its roll-out will continue. Last weekend it averaged $3,552. 9. Alex Cross Gross: $5.05 million (Cume: $19,368,691) Screens: 2,541 (PSA: $1,987) Week: 2 (Change: – 55.7%) The pic dropped nearly 56%, a steep one for the titles second round. It added two locations and its $1,987 average compares to $4,489 in its debut. The crime thriller’s $35 million production budget means it has a tough road given its slow momentum. 10. Fun Size Gross: $4.06 million Screens: 3,014 (PSA: $1,347) Week: 1 Ouch, one of the worst of the weekend’s new offerings, the film clearly tanked with audiences. —– 13. Chasing Mavericks Gross: $2.2 million Screens: 2,002 (PSA: $1,099) Week: 1 The worst of the newcomers, the film failed to make the top ten even though it opened wide. The debut is the ninth worst ever for a film opening in over 2,000 theaters.

Robert Pattinson Beds Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas and More in Bel Ami Trailer

Exciting news, world. Robert Pattinson has advanced from respectfully romancing teen virgins onscreen to defiling wealthy, middle-aged wives (played by Oscar-nominated actresses, no less) in pursuit of upward mobility. Or wealth. Or maybe just acceptance as a serious actor. (Look at him in a period piece with Kristen Scott Thomas!) Either way, jump ahead to see our little Edward Cullen mature into a scheming, sexing cad in the trailer for Bel Ami .
