A lil’ positivity… Hospital Changes Decision About Denying Treatment To Dying Teen Over Legal Troubles Earlier this week, we reported on the case of a 15-year-old Georgia boy who was given six months to live but being denied a heart transplant by hospital administrators partly because of his past run-ins with the law. Well, it seems the powers that be have had a change of heart. via Think Progress Anthony Stokes, the 15-year-old Georgia resident who was initially denied a place on a heart transplant list because of his history of “non-compliance,” is getting a second chance. His family says that his doctors have changed their minds, and Anthony was placed on a transplant list at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on Tuesday. Anthony has an enlarged heart, and likely only has six months to live unless he receives a transplant. But at the beginning of this week, the doctors at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta informed his family that he wasn’t eligible for the transplant list, partly because of his history of low grades and trouble with the law. Doctors weren’t convinced that Anthony could be trusted to follow directions and manage his follow-up care. “I know he will comply with all the rules,” Melencia Hamilton, Anthony’s mother, told ABC News in an emotional interview before the family learned the good news. “He will take his medicine because he knows that is how he has to live.” On Tuesday, hospital officials reversed course. They did not explain why they had changed their minds, but they indicated that Anthony would be one of the first in line for a heart transplant because his condition is so serious. “We met with hospital officials about 30 minutes ago,” family spokesman Mark Bell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Tuesday afternoon. “After reviewing the situation, they said Anthony would be placed on the list for a heart transplant and that he would be first in line, due to his weakened heart condition.” Despite the blatantly shady reasoning behind the transplant denial in the first place, we’re glad that this young man will get another chance at life. Teenage Black Boy Denied Heart Transplant Due To Juvenile Record An Atlanta-area teenager fighting for his life with less than six months to live is being denied a necessary transplant that would save his life all because the hospital says his past run-ins with the law indicate that he wouldn’t take the follow-up steps necessary to effectively make the transplant a success. via Think Progress Fifteen-year-old Anthony Stokes has less than six months to live unless he receives an emergency heart transplant. But his family has been told that Anthony doesn’t qualify for the transplant list because he has a “history of non-compliance” — partly due to his history of earning low grades and having some trouble with the law. “They said they don’t have any evidence that he would take his medicine or that he would go to his follow-ups,” Melencia Hamilton, Anthony’s mother, told WSBTV News. Hamilton explained that her son has an enlarged heart, and a transplant is the only thing that will help his condition. The doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta weren’t very specific about what exactly contributed to their decision to label Anthony as “non-compliant.” But family friends explained to WSBTV News that they were told it’s partly because of Anthony’s performance in school and run-ins with law enforcement. His family and friends don’t accept that as a valid reason to deny the teen life-saving treatment. “We must save Anthony’s life,” family friend Mack Major, identified as Anthony’s mentor, told CBS Atlanta. “We don’t have a lot of time to do it, but it’s something that must be done.” This might be some of the dumbest, most bogus bunch of bullisht we’ve ever heard. The wonders of modern medicine! This lucky fella has just re-entered society after the world’s most extensive full face transplant allowed him to stop hiding his disfigurement from the world. Richard Lee Norris received the transplant that has allowed him to regain the ability to speak and show expression just 7 months ago, but the medical staff at the University of Maryland Medical Center where he was operated on say that he is recovering very well! According to Fox News reports : Norris, from Hillsville, Va., suffered a severe injury in 1997 when a gun accident resulted in the loss of his upper and lower jaws, along with his lips and nose. According to Norris, he has spent the past 15 years as a hermit, hiding behind a surgical mask and rarely going out in public. Now, he said the transplant surgery has not only transformed his face – but his life as well. “People used to stare at me because of my disfigurement,” Norris said in a statement. “Now they can stare at me in amazement and in the transformation I have taken. I am now able to walk past people and no one even gives me a second look. My friends have moved on with their lives, starting families and careers. I can now start working on the new life given back to me.” Completed on March 20, 2012, Norris’s surgery involved replacing both jaws, teeth, tongue and skin – along with nerve and muscle tissue from his scalp to his neck. The 36-hour procedure was conducted by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgery at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. “Our goal for Richard from the beginning was to restore facial harmony and functional balance in the most aesthetic manner possible through the complex transplantation of the facial bones, nerves, muscles, tongue, teeth and the associated soft tissues,” said Rodriguez in a statement. “Richard is exceeding my expectations this soon after his surgery, and he deserves great deal of credit for the countless hours spent practicing his speech and strengthening his new facial muscles. He’s one of the most courageous and committed individuals I know.” So far, Norris is starting to once again use his face to perform simple tasks he could do before the accident. He can smile and show expression, and doctors said that the right side of his face is at about 80 percent normal motor function – while his left sided is at about 40 percent. He can also eat primarily with his mouth, and he has regained the ability to smell and taste. “I am doing well. I spend a lot of my time fishing and working on my golf game. I am also enjoying time with my family and friends,” Norris said. “I do still have follow-up appointments with a lot of different doctors and therapists to ensure everything is healing up properly. I have been undergoing physical therapy and also speech therapy. I have been doing very well regaining my speech back. Each day it improves a little more.” Isn’t that incredible? Media coverage surrounding Amber Portwood ‘s decision to go to prison because she can’t hack it in rehab has more or less ignored one key component: Her daughter, Leah. The Teen Mom star was sentenced to five years in prison last week after she dropped out of a drug-treatment program the court ordered her to complete. She could’ve toughed it out, though; Portwood is off to prison because she felt rehab was simply too hard and thinks going to jail is the only way to get clean. Portwood said in her jailhouse interview last week that an overdose drove her to take the five-year sentence – handed down because of her repeated drug arrests, but initially suspended pending completion of the program. The saddest part of this saga, which has become an afterthought, is that she effectively chose to be locked up and away from her three-year-old girl. With the final season of Teen Mom starting tomorrow, this is unlikely to be swept under the rug any longer. The premiere shows Amber going to rehab. In the second episode, she’s in treatment and thinks she’s making some real progress, making her downward spiral even more depressing to endure. Maybe Gary Shirley having custody of Leah isn’t the worst thing, but why would you choose to go to prison and not be a part of your child’s life? Like everything else in Amber’s world, it defies comprehension.

Five years after beating breast cancer, Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts announced to a national audience today that she has been diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood disorder that will require chemotherapy and a bone-marrow transplant. Roberts, holding back tears, told viewers that her older sister is “a virtually perfect match” and will serve as her donor. ABC has made public a letter Roberts wrote to GMA staffers , in which she says she learned of the disease “a few weeks ago, during a rather unpleasant procedure to extract bone marrow for testing. “I [then] received word that I would interview President Obama the next day. The combination of landing the biggest interview of my career and having a drill in my back reminds me that God only gives us what we can handle and that it helps to have a good sense of humor when we run smack into the absurdity of life.” Roberts plans to remain in her position while undergoing treatment, though she’ll miss a “chunk of time” later this summer for the transplant. Robin added that doctors have said her age and fitness levels should play a key role in successfully confronting the illness. The “bottom line,” according to Roberts? “I’ve been living with this diagnosis for awhile and will continue to anchor GMA. I love what I do and the people with whom I do it. Along with my faith, family and friends, all of you at ABC News give me the motivation and energy to face this challenge… I am going to beat this.”

Time’s are tough, but it can NOT be this serious : Authorities have indicted five people in central China for involvement in illegal organ trading after a teenager sold one of his kidneys to buy an iPhone and an iPad. Prosecutors in the city of Chenzhou charged the suspects with intentional injury for organizing the removal and transplant of a kidney from a 17-year-old high school student surnamed Wang, the official Xinhua News Agency said late Friday. Xinhua described one of the defendants named He Wei as being broke and frustrated over gambling debts. It said he asked another defendant to look for organ donors in online chat rooms and someone else to lease an operating room for the transplant, which took place in April last year. He received 220,000 yuan ($35,000) for the transplant, gave the student 22,000 yuan ($3,500) and shared the remaining money with the other defendants and several medical staff involved in the operation, Xinhua said. When the student returned home, he was asked how he could afford a new iPhone and an iPad and he told his mother that he sold one of his kidneys, the report said. The Southern Daily newspaper reported last month that other individuals have sold, or seriously considered selling, their kidneys to earn money for reasons that included paying off large debts, making a payment on a smartphone, or paying for an abortion for a girlfriend. “Without facing complete hardship, these young people born after the 1990s made rash decisions. In the choice between their bodies and materialism, they resolutely chose the latter,” the official Communist Party newspaper Guangming Daily said in an editorial late last month about the Southern Daily report. “In today’s society where desires are infinite and demands are boundless … blindly competing with others in the pursuit of high-end ‘technology’ will gradually ruin lives,” it said.
