‘Get It Up or I’ll Cut It Off’: A Meditation on the Cinematic Brilliance of Machete Maidens Unleashed!

A few days back, after a festival day that began with two-hours-plus of French people talking incessantly while hiding their secrets from one another (Guillaume Canet’s snoozy Little White Lies ), progressed to a moody meditation on the agonies of preteen vampirism (Matt Reeves’ bracing Let Me In ), and was rounded off, just before dinner time, with a trapped James Franco sawing his arm off with a teensy knife (thank you, Danny Boyle), I wandered listlessly around the excessively dazzling and noisy Scotiabank screening complex. I wanted one more movie to finish the day, but what? A nice little Macedonian film, perhaps? Maybe I could find some three-hour Japanese thing with nice scenery.

Passion Play Duo Mitch Glazer and Kelly Lynch on Their 20-Year Road to Toronto

So the winged woman-meets-jazz trumpeter romantic fable Passion Play premiered Friday night here in Toronto, and say what you will about the headscrather of a story, the vision of Mickey Rourke in a love scene with Megan Fox — with wings — or Bill Murray’s hairpiece-aided deadpan gangster cutthroat. But nearly two decades after screenwriter Mitch Glazer began developing his directing debut (inspired in part by his wife, actress Kelly Lynch), it’s ultimate realization — with this cast on this stage all at once — prompts one to ask what’s worth waiting 20 years for? I mean, even Avatar only took 12 or so. Glazer and Lynch met Movieline this weekend to discuss.

Tron: Legacy Sneak Peek — Hop On Your Lightcycles

The Disney Channel is taking a break from showing Jonas Brothers flossing and “That’s So Raven” reruns to air a quick sneak peek at some additional scenes from Tron: Legacy . I would say it’s only about a third of stuff you haven’t already seen in the trailer, but still! It’s all glowy and cool and computery and stuff. And isn’t that what we really want in our Tron ?

Dragon Tattoo Girl Joins Robert Downey, Jr. In Sherlock Holmes Sequel

For all those Swedish book enthusiasts out there who were bummed that the English language version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo gave the eponymous role of Lisbeth Salander to Rooney Mara rather than Noomi Rapace, the original Swedish Salander — cheer up! She might have just gotten her big American break after all.

Hereafter Trailer: Matt Damon Sees Dead People

After his last role as the rugby player who defeats apartheid, Matt Damon teams up with director Clint Eastwood again to play George, a seemingly average Joe who has a special connection with the Other Side in the newly released trailer for Hereafter . But will it be scarily good or just screamingly awful?

Philip Seymour Hoffman in Jack Goes Boating: A Definite Grooming ‘Don’t’

Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of my favorite contemporary actors, and he’s perfectly charming in Jack Goes Boating, which is also his debut as a film director. Hoffman plays a shy, awkward New York limo driver whose friends (John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega) try to help him get his life on-track by fixing him up with an equally shy, awkward young woman played by Amy Ryan.
