One Last Toronto Roundup: Herzog in 3-D, Squabbling Comics and More

The last day of a festival stay is always a time of reckoning. You may have seen a lot. But how much did you miss? Running alongside the slate of pictures you actually caught is another festival, a phantom festival, consisting of all the movies you might have seen, things you tried to get to and just couldn’t manage, or things recommended by other people after you’d missed all the possible screenings.

Ryan Gosling Cops to ‘Phony’ Tough-Guy Accent

Have you ever wondered why Ryan Gosling — a Canadian with extensive child actor and Mouseketeer experience — somehow talks in real life like he is a surly, New York teamster? “As a kid I decided that a Canadian accent doesn’t sound tough,” he admits to W . “I thought guys should sound like Marlon Brando. So now I have a phony accent that I can’t shake, so it’s not phony anymore. I’m going for the Madonna thing, the Lady Gaga thing — a phony accent that becomes your trademark.” [ W ]

Rent a Movie, Get a Tan

I doubt many tears are being shed for the slow demise of Blockbuster’s overpriced rentals, late-fees, and huge selection of direct-to-video horror clunkers. But independent video stores are another story. Sure that snobby video clerk made fun of you for renting How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days , but that’s part of their charm! Plus that clerk was right. In any case, it looks like cinephiles can rest easy because local video stores have a new, sure-fire survival strategy: tanning beds.

Essential Killing: Dear Vincent Gallo, Why Do You Torment Me So?

Oh, Vincent Gallo! There’s no escaping you. You follow me from continent to continent, from festival to festival. Last week, in Venice, I saw your strange little picture Promises Written in Water (also playing here in Toronto), and while I wasn’t wowed, I couldn’t quite dismiss it, either. But while in Venice, I missed Polish filmmaker Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing, which netted you the Best Actor award there — in fact, you’ve got pretty much the only role, aside from Emmanuelle Seigner, who appears very late in the picture. So today in Toronto, I decided to check out Essential Killing. I needed to see for myself if you really deserved that award, you scalawag, you.

Another Resident Evil Sequel on the Way, This Time with Your Input

Since Resident Evil: Afterlife wiped the floor with the box office competition this weekend, it’s not a huge surprise that Milla Jovovich confirmed plans for yet another sequel. Only this time, it’s going to be an interactive process, with Director Paul W.S. Anderson discussing the project with fans on “twitter and stuff” to get ideas for the movie. No word yet on whether they will take posts like “make a good movie for once” into account. [ Vulture ]
