Ann Curry: Matt Lauer Sucks, But NBC Execs to Blame For Today Debacle

Today’s edition of the Today mill focuses on Ann Curry and her alleged reaction to reports that Matt Lauer may be fired from the struggling show. If you assumed Curry would be laughing all the way to the bank with her severance check, think again. She’s more upset with NBC than anything. While plenty pissed at her former co-host – who she wishes would just shut up – Curry places the blame on NBC for empowering Lauer in the first place. According to reports, the powers that be have allowed him to become a diva, when they should’ve limited his power and kept him focused on journalism. “Ann should be crowing from the rooftops about Matt’s contract not being renewed, but that’s just not who she is,” a source close to Curry says. “Remember, Ann herself was blamed last year for the show losing ratings to Good Morning America … they fired her and the situation didn’t improve!! “There’s a real culture of passing the buck and looking for a scapegoat at Today and it seems that it’s Matt’s turn now to be thrown under the bus.” “She doesn’t blame him for her firing, but Ann feels Matt was afforded way too much power and input when it came to programming decisions.” “At the end of the day he’s just a journalist.” “The line between journalist and executive producer was clouded and Ann thinks the network bosses have no one to blame for the slide but themselves.” Ratings were slipping before Ann Curry’s firing , but the bad PR from that only made things worse, damaging Lauer’s reputation and increasing GMA ‘s lead.

GTFOHWTBS!! Nicki’s Blaming Walmart For Whack Azz Sales Of ‘The Re-Up’ Album

See there’s this thing called iTunes… but apparently Nicki thinks all of her sales come from Walmart customers. Whining about the busted sales of her repackaged, old azz material, Nicki’s throwing stores like Best Buy, Target, and Walmart under the bus. According to The Huffington Post , Nicki admits that the re-release wasn’t even carried by some retailers: When asked in an interview with Power 105.1 if it was hard to purchase “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up,” Minaj responded, “It is hard to get the album because the stores basically said that the last few re-releases they had put out did not do well and they didn’t want to take a chance. So, Target and Walmart is not selling the album. Target is actually my biggest retailer — they’ve always been my biggest retailer. They’ve sold the most Nicki Minaj albums ever, so, thank you, Target. But I wish you could’ve sold this one.” Minaj continued, “Best Buy only took limited because they’re like ‘Oh no, we want to play it safe,’ so it’s very difficult and it kind of sets you up to fail.” The singer’s second album, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded,” debuted at number one on Billboard with 253,000 copies sold in the album’s first week. The re-release, “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded – The Re-Up” hit stores on Nov. 19. “At the end of the day, I was happy I was able to put the music out,” Minaj said. Maybe it’s the quality that’s effecting your sales? Just sayin’. Images via WENN

James Franco Sounds Excited About Rise of the Planet of the Apes

It seems Oscar producers weren’t the only people James Franco threw under the bus in his new Playboy interview. “They haven’t shown me the movie yet, so I don’t know what the result is,” Franco said about Rise of the Planet of the Apes . “I did reshoots, and it sounds to me the final movie will be different from the screenplay, which had a lot of character development. The movie seems to be more action now. I went and did my job, and I’m supposed to be a scientist. I feel pretty confident that I did that.” [ Playboy ]

Kristian Herzog Pens Tell-All Book on Oksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson Saga

Oksana Grigorieva’s former bodyguard Kristian Herzog has completed a tell-all book about his former employer and her explosive relationship with Mel Gibson. Herzog, who claims he nailed Oksana, but that she basically lied about all things Mel, is now hoping he can land a book deal, and is shopping around a draft. The convicted criminal, who was once accused of impersonating a police officer, was set to be deposed by Mel this week but postponed that due to illness. TEAM MEL : Kristian Herzog is ready to throw Oksana under the bus . Kristian working with Oksana during a particularly turbulent time in her life – shortly after the January 6, 2010, incident in which she claims Mel attacked her. “Kristian thinks there is a big market for a book, and he thinks he is the one that should spill the beans about Oksana and Mel’s relationship,” says a source . “He is trying to do whatever he can to insert himself into this mess, and [Kristian Herzog] is adamant that he had an intimate relationship with Oksana.” Credible witness? Maybe not. Entertaining and enterprising? You know it! Herzog was formally subpoenaed by Mel’s legal team recently. Gibson, accused of domestic abuse, wants Herzog to admit Oksana exaggerated her claims. When he is deposed, “Herzog can be expected to be grilled by both Oksana and Mel’s lawyers. He has changed his story multiple times,” the source says. His motives are suspect. Herzog has an ax to grind with Oksana Grigorieva , insiders believe, because she fired him when she became aware of his past. Basically … who knows. But it should be interesting to watch unfold.

Shameful News Industry Willing To Sacrifice Wikileaks To Get Shield Law | Techdirt

http://techdirt.com/images/topic_journalism.gif A few weeks ago, we noted, with some disappointment, that the politicians who had been pushing for a much needed federal shield law for journalism, Senators Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein, were taking the politically expedient route of adding a specific amendment designed to keep Wikileaks out of the bill's protections( http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20100804/10343410497.shtml ). Apparently, a bunch of newspaper folks have apparently stepped forward to support this move. Douglas Lee, at The First Amendment Center has an opinion piece calling those people out for sacrificing their overall principles just to get the shield law approved( http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/commentary.aspx?id=23303 ). The whole thing is a great read, but a few key snippets: > > It doesn't seem all that long ago that representatives of the newspaper > > industry would have recoiled from working with Congress to deny legal > > protection to anyone who leaked confidential or classified documents. > > Today, however, they seem happy to be doing so. Lee the goes on to quote various industry reps distancing themselves from Wikileaks and putting it down as “not journalism.” He also quotes them admitting that they feel they have to throw Wikileaks under the bus, or the law won't get passed, and then calls them out on the impact of that decision, hinting at the fact that at least some of this might be due to traditional journalists simply not liking new upstarts that are changing the game — like Wikileaks. > > As comforting as it might be to “real” journalists to incorporate editorial > > oversight into a shield law and to use it to distinguish further between the > > “us” who are entitled to the law's protections and the “them” who are not, > > at least two dangers exist in that approach. > > First, does anyone — including the most mainstream of traditional journalists > > — really think it a good idea that Congress and judges define, analyze and > > evaluate what is appropriate “editorial oversight”? For decades, news > > organizations have struggled to resist those efforts in libel cases and, > > so far, those struggles have succeeded. If those same organizations > > now invite legislators and judges into their newsrooms to see how worthy > > their reporters are of protection under a shield law, they shouldn't be > > surprised if the legislators and judges decide to stay. > > Second, is the free flow of information really served if the act's protections > > are denied to those who don't have or practice editorial oversight? > > As Schumer acknowledged in his statement, the act already contains > > language that would limit or deny protection to those who provide or > > publish classified military secrets. Specifically exempting WikiLeaks and > > other organizations that might otherwise qualify for protection under the > > act in at least some cases seems designed not to enhance the free flow of > > information but to channel that information to mainstream sources. It is the nature of politics today to compromise principles to get things through, but this move certainly seems unfortunate — and one that I imagine many news organizations will regret down the road. added by: toyotabedzrock

New Couple Alert: Paris Hilton and Cy Waits

For the second straight weekend, ho-tel heiress Paris Hilton flew 4,000 miles from overseas to visit … Las Vegas. Which is just a few hours from her L.A. home. The reason? Cy Waits. She’s dating the businessman and nightclub entrepreneur based in Sin City – and going to great lengths to keep the new romance hot! A week ago, Paris Hilton came in via a flight from Egypt, and over this past weekend, on a flight straight from Brazil. Says a source close to Cy Waits … “It sure looks as if the new matchup is picking up steam on their fourth weekend of togetherness. They are inseparable while here in Las Vegas.” He and Paris Hilton went to Pure, where sister Nicky was hosting and celebrating beau David Katzenberg’s new MTV series The Hard Times of R.J. Berger . Cy Waits and Paris Hilton are really hitting it off . Later, Paris, Cy, Nicky and David went to hotspot LAX in the Luxor, where Shayne Lamas and Nik Richie , her husband and TheDirty.com founder were hosting. “They’re taking it slow and sensibly,” one of Paris’ friends told me. “She’s happy, and that’s the most important thing. It’s not super-serious dating yet.” “Nobody knows where this might lead. I don’t even think they do. Paris is so busy with her launch of her new Tease fragrance inspired by [Marilyn Monroe].” “They’re seeing each other and getting to know each other better. She thinks he is very sweet, considerate and caring and loves the fact that he’s self-made.” That’s a great little dig at former boyfriend Doug Reinhardt, heir to his family’s frozen burrito fortune, but pretty much useless on his own merit.

Dr. Conrad Murray to Keep Medical License For Now; Joe and Katherine Jackson Attend Hearing

A judge ruled that the embattled Dr. Conrad Murray will be allowed to continue to practice medicine in California while awaiting trial on manslaughter charges. On Monday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor declined to grant a request by California authorities to suspend Murray’s license indefinitely. Dr. Murray’s attorneys fought the restriction, arguing that it would prompt authorities in Texas and Nevada, where he also practices, to take similar action. Murray, who is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the June 25, 2009 death of Michael Jackson, has been ordered not to use anesthetics on patients. The most surprising development Monday was the arrival of Michael Jackson’s parents, Joe and Katherine, who then sat next to each other in the front row. The doc is still in. Who’d be treated by him is another stor y. The Jackson patriarchs didn’t speak to each other much, according to reports, and Joe appeared to have dozed off at one point. Nevertheless, it was a shock. After all, Joe said over the weekend that Katherine Jackson is to blame for Michael’s death, since they were so close and she did not do enough to intervene. Then again, Murray will argue Michael Jackson killed himself , so he’s not the only one finger-pointing. Joe throwing his own wife under the bus, though? Wow. Despicable stuff, but apparently not enough for her to cut him out of her life. Jermaine, Randy, and LaToya Jackson also attended the hearing, reports CNN. Yesterday’s hearing was held only to determine whether Murray could maintain his California medical license, and did not directly concern the criminal case. The judge set August 23, 2010, as the date for the start of Murray’s preliminary hearing to determine if he will stand trial on the manslaughter charge. The prosecutor said that hearing could last a week. Joe Jackson surfaces in court. No new accusations this hour .
