Who knew she had it in her her?!? Skylar Laine, a young southern gal best known to American Idol fans so far on season 11 for her energy and lively personality on stage, simply stood at the microphone last night and belted out a beautiful version of Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings.” It was the sort of rendition we’d have expected from Jessica Sanchez , but Skylar proved her versatility with it, causing us to agree with Jennifer Lopez, who was on the verge of tears by the time Laine completed the cover and told her: You “can sing with the best of them here.” Amen, J. Lo. Amen. Skylar Laine – “Wind Beneath My Wings”

With the American Ido l top 10 taking the stage again tonight, and with this shaping up to be one of the more hotly-contested seasons to date, it’s time for the first THG Power Poll of the season. Who do you see as the favorite right now? 10. Deandre Brackensick : Would have been our choice to leave after last week’s debacle. He can hit the high notes… and that’s about it. 9. Heejun Han : Love the personality, don’t see anything on stage that makes him standout above the rest. It’s solid and nothing more or less. 8. Elise Testone : Might suffer some likability issues. Did you notice her NOT applauding for Erika last week? Or not hugging Skylar? Yes, we’re forced to nitpick when the talent is this even. We did love her version of ” Let’s Stay Together .” 7. Joshua Ledet : We expect plenty of disagreement here. It’s not a question of his voice, just of his theatrics. Ledet’s ” When a Man Loves a Woman ” may have been the single best of any contestant this season, but we can see his act growing old. 6. Skylar Laine : She has the energy and the attitude, that’s for sure. She also has the identity: a rocking country chick. She just lacks the range. 5. Erika Van Pelt : Loved her take on“Edge of Glory.” A smooth, consistent voice makes it hard to see this finalist faltering in the next few weeks. 4. Colton Dixon : Love the risks he takes – a song by White Lion ?!? – and love his confidence on stage. Most definitely stands out on a weekly basis. 3. Jessica Sanchez : Will go down in Idol history for her version of “ I Will Always Love You .” That should be enough to keep her around for awhile. But can she go outside the world of ballads? A less-than-impressive take on “Turn the Beat Around” causes us to wonder. 2. Hollie Cavanagh : Has she had an off week yet? Memorable auditions of “Reflection,” “All the Man That I Need,” and “The Power of Love” prove she has staying power. Could work on her versatility and stage presence. 1. Phillip Phillips : He’s a cute young white guy with a guitar. Until American Idol viewers prove they are capable of crowning someone else, he has to be the favorite. WHO IS YOUR AMERICAN IDOL FAVORITE?

Josh Krajcik brought Paula Abdul to tears on The X Factor last night. Granted, this is about as difficult as getting Lindsay Lohan to have a drink. But still. The heartfelt crooner belted out a couple of songs on the semifinals, once again proving his versatility via a piano-based version of “Hallelujah” and a livelier version of “Come Together.” The former prompted Abdul to tell Josh he “attacks our souls,” while the latter caused Nicole Scherzinger to compare the contestant to a “beautiful prayer.” It’s safe to say they’re big fans. Are you? Watch Krajcik in double action now. Josh Krajcik – Hallelujah Josh Krajcik – Come Together

‘It’s just me showing my versatility,’ G.O.O.D. Music soldier tells Mixtape Daily of jumping on timeless beats from Youngbloodz to Outkast. By Rob Markman, with reporting by James Smith Main Pick Artist : CyHi the Prynce Representing : Atlanta Mixtape : Jack of All Trades Real Spit : CyHi the Prynce figured he would end the summer the same way he started: with a free mixtape. In June, the G.O.O.D. Music soldier released Royal Flush 2 to much fanfare and as August rolled to a close, the MC once again got to work with his Jack of All Trades tape. The Atlanta rapper teamed with both DJ Scream and DJ Spinz to gather a bunch of familiar instrumentals that would showcase his rhyme skills. As far as the title of the tape, it’s all pretty simple if you let the Prynce tell it. “It’s just me showing my versatility and that I’m a jack of all trades,” CyHi told Mixtape Daily. “Slow beats, fast beats, mid-tempos, whatever; rugged, pop, I can rap on it all. Gospel, country — whatever you want to give me, I can do. So I think Jack of All Trades shows that I’m a jack of all trades.” On “Farmer,” CyHi goes to the Midwest for inspiration, using Bone Thugs-n-Harmony ‘s 1994 beat for “Thuggish Ruggish Bone” to rap about his affinity for marijuana. “Blacksmith” continues the trend. Over the slow bounce of Tru ‘s “I’m Bout It, Bout It,” Kanye’s prot

‘I was the last voice to be heard on the album,’ Busta Rhymes tells MTV News of Lil Wayne’s latest. By Rob Markman Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — With all of his versatility, Lil Wayne puts his range on display on Tha Carter IV . Songs like the acoustic-R&B “How to Love” and the John Legend-laced “So Special” show Weezy’s penchant for crafting female-friendly radio hits, while tracks like “6 Foot 7 Foot” and “John” revolve around Tunechi’s rap roots. The album’s “Intro,” “Interlude” and “Outro” also celebrate rapping for rapping’s sake. On the “Intro,” Wayne raps solo over a pounding, bottom-heavy beat supplied by newcomer Willy Will. Halfway through the album, Missouri MC Tech N9ne and Outkast spitter Andre 3000 appear atop the same instrumental on the C4 “Interlude.” Finally, on the LP’s “Outro,” Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes take their turns over that beat. As standalone cuts, the three tracks feature some pretty aggressive rap bars, but we couldn’t help but notice that if Wayne were to string them together into one track, it might have been one of rap’s most star-studded posse cuts. “I actually close out Tha Carter IV. I’m the last voice you hear on Tha Carter IV, ” Busta Rhymes pointed out to MTV News on the 2011 VMA , black carpet. “It’s special because I didn’t know that’s what [Wayne] was gonna do with it.” With his rapid-fire verse, Busta boasts of his “uncompetewitable” rhyme style before toasting to Weezy by rhyming, “OK, enough of that, now I’m out the door/ Tunechi, thanks for giving us a whole ‘nother classic with Tha Carter IV. ” “When we did the joint, he didn’t really tell us how he was gonna put it together. All I knew was that when it was done, it was me, Bun B, Nas and Shyne, and I was the last voice to be heard on the album, so I feel honored for that,” Busta said. Although he had yet to hear the completed version of C4, Bussa Bus was excited for his friend and frequent collaborator, Wayne. “I didn’t really get to hear it in its entirety yet, but I hope that everybody understands that that man put his foot in this album,” he said. “From what I did hear, being in the studio with him, he goin’ ape sh– on it.” Share your reviews of Tha Carter IV in the comments below! What they are, is amazing. Without bones, brains, or blood, they manage to thrive in all of the worlds oceans, in an astonishing range of depths. This versatility, however, is becoming a problem as other species are strained by steadily collapsing ecosystems .

We don’t mean to be harsh with our headline. At least not too harsh. But this lackluster season of American Idol can at least be redeemed by the fact that next week’s finale will be one of the hardest to gauge in show history. If viewers do the right thing and vote out Casey James tonight, that is. Kara’s crush simply doesn’t have the versatility needed come out on top. He underwhelmed last night with both “OK, It’s Alright With Me” (his selection) and John Mayer’s “Daughters” (the judge’s choice for him) and deserves to be eliminated. This would leave it to Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze , two finalists that should be neck-and-neck after their most recent performances. DeWyze put on the best of the evening, and one of the best of the season, with “Hallejulah.” He’s been coming on strong over the last few weeks, while Crystal hasn’t been able to match the magic of last month’s ” People Get Ready .” Below, we rank the six songs played throughout the hour: Lee DeWyze, Hallelujah Crystal Bowersox, Maybe I’m Amazed Lee DeWyze, Simple Man Crystal Bowersox, Come to My Window Casey James, Daughters Casey James, OK, It’s Alright With Me Which performance was your favorite? And is there any chance Casey upsets one of these two and advances to next week’s finale?
