Casey Abrams Had To ‘Translate’ Online Haters During ‘American Idol’

‘You take away the swear words … and you read what they’re actually trying to say,’ he tells MTV News of nasty comments. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Casey Abrams Photo: MTV News You might be surprised to learn that, when he wasn’t slapping the bass or battling colitis , recently departed “American Idol” hopeful Casey Abrams enjoyed nothing more than kicking back, stroking his beard, and diving headfirst into the sea of comments fans of the show had written about him. And, unlike pretty much everyone else in “Idol” history, he preferred them to be as nasty as possible. “What you have to do is kinda, you have to translate it. If they’re saying negative things about you, you take away the swear words and like ‘I hate you’ and you read what they’re actually trying to say,” he told MTV News. “And, if [they wrote] ‘Casey sucked this performance, he sounded like a dog,’ I take it as ‘Casey, stop growling so much.’ And if I see more than, like, 10 comments like that, I’m going to take it as a sign, and I’m going to try to ease up on the growling.” So Abrams used fan comments much in the same way he did the input of the “Idol” judges: He weighed their value against his instincts and acted accordingly (he certainly didn’t stop growling). Like he told us previously, it’s all “jelly beans in a jar.” And though he read plenty of nasty things about himself, he let them all roll off his back — except for one thing. Seems you can call Abrams whatever you want, just don’t equate his performances to jazz. “The jazz thing [bothered me],” he said. “I didn’t see a lot of negative comments, but I saw that, like, it fell flat, and I’m OK with that. When I first listened to jazz, I didn’t like it at all, I hated it, and then I had to play it to really get what it meant, so every single negative comment, I get where they’re coming from, so it’s all good.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Casey Abrams Feels ‘Really Good’ About His ‘American Idol’ Exit

Latest castoff denies dating ‘very special musical friend’ Haley Reinhart. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX When Casey Abrams ended up standing next to Jacob Lusk and Scotty McCreery on “American Idol” on Thursday night, he had a feeling the end was nigh . Then, when Lusk was sent to safety, well, that was all she wrote. “Everyone was just so incredible [on Wednesday night]. … My performance was pretty good, but seeing Jacob kill it and then seeing Haley kill it, seeing Scotty and Lauren kill it and Durbin obviously … it just made me feel like, ‘These guys are incredible. These guys could carry the show. I don’t really need to be here, so if I go home tomorrow, I’m prepared,’ ” he said of the thoughts going through his head after Wednesday night’s Carole King performance show .

Casey Abrams Steals A Kiss, The Night On ‘American Idol’

Bearded rocker plants one on judge Jennifer Lopez on Wednesday’s 21st-century songs episode. By Adam Graham Casey Abrams performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX This season, “American Idol” has sort of become a game of “what will Casey Abrams do next?” And after taking on Nirvana , nearly fainting on live television and dialing himself way back with a hushed take on Nat King Cole’s ‘Nature Boy,” Abrams topped even himself on Wednesday’s (April 20) “Idol” by planting a kiss on Jennifer Lopez’s cheek while finishing off his performance. The smooch came at the close of the bearded rocker’s aggressive rendition of Maroon 5’s “Harder to Breathe,” from the group’s 2002 debut album, Songs About Jane. (Wednesday’s theme was “songs from the 21st century.” ) Abrams, using his intense glare to embody the bitter scorn in frontman Adam Levine’s lyrics, stalked either side of the stage in a stiff, upright manner before approaching the judges’ table at the song’s end. He locked himself on Lopez like a guided missle and leaned in toward her, his head mere inches from that of People magazine’s Most Beautiful Woman . They shared an intimate stare before she broke the glance and turned her head to her right, toward Steven Tyler. Abrams sang the song’s final line directly to her — “is there anyone out there?/ ‘Cause it’s getting harder and harder to breathe — and caught her off-guard by pecking her on the cheek before walking away. Randy Jackson threw up his arms in dismay, Tyler exclaimed, “You did what I’ve been trying to do for two months!” and Lopez giggled like a giddy school girl. The fireworks weren’t over yet. After Lopez and Jackson praised Abrams for his soft lips and his risk-taking, respectively, Tyler dropped what appeared to be an F-bomb, calling Abrams “f—ing good” in his appraisal of the singer. (Censors caught it, though a little lip-reading goes a long way.) The audience erupted, Abrams covered his mouth in surprise and Lopez’s jaw hung agape, while Tyler continued as if nothing had happened. Jackson stood up from his chair as if to signal he was calling for a time-out, and made Tyler aware of his gaffe. “He’s so darn good,” Tyler corrected himself. Host Ryan Seacrest, sporting a faux-Abrams beard on his face, remarked, “The wheels have fallen off this program,” and thanked him for “changing the course of this show.” Backstage after the performance, cameras caught up with Abrams and he recapped what had just happened onstage. “I kissed Jennifer Lopez and I made Steven Tyler swear,” he said. “That”s always a plus.” So now, once again, the question remains: What will Casey Abrams do next? Casey Abrams Is ‘So Innovative’ On ‘American Idol,’ Melinda Doolittle Says

‘He has a lock on that jazz thing,’ she tells Jim Cantiello on ‘Idol Party Live.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Melinda Doolittle on “Idol Party Live’ via Skype Photo: MTV News If you haven’t been watching MTV News’ “Idol Party Live” with “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello, you are missing out. Every Thursday at noon ET, tune in to MTV.com for a fun-filled post-“Idol” chat show full of fresh, lively and interactive analysis of Wednesday night’s performance episode and predictions for Thursday night’s results show. On Thursday’s (April 14) installment of “Idol Party Live,” Cantiello and guest co-host Eric Ditzian were joined via Skype by season-six standout Melinda Doolittle. When Cantiello asked Doolittle to name a few favorites from the current season, she surprised her host by calling out jazz enthusiast Casey Abrams. “I hear that Casey is a little bit polarizing right now,” Doolittle said. “I love him. I absolutely adore him. I think he’s so innovative. The end of that song made me get up off my couch and throw my blanket at him.” Cantiello, who has expressed far less enthusiasm for Abrams, then brought up the fact that Doolittle was the first one to introduce jazz on the show, not Abrams, and asked the soulful singer if she felt affronted by the judges making such a fuss over Abrams’ jazz “introduction.” “No not in the least,” she said. “I want to make sure that when the show is over we can go on tour together. I need to work with Casey. I think he’s fabulous and he is bringing something new to the show.” Doolittle said she didn’t come into “Idol” as a jazz singer as Abrams has. “I love jazz music and love to do it, but I came in as a soul singer. He has a lock on that jazz thing,” she said of Abrams. “I love it. Maybe [season-six contestant] Paris Bennett before then, but he’s really doing his thing.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Casey Abrams Goes Back to Nature, Boy

“It’s hard to find a song that defines me as an artist.” – Casey Abrams These American Idol kids are getting frisky. Like James Durbin , Casey butted heads a bit with producer Jimmy Iovine regarding his selection Wednesday. Jimmy nearly talked Abrams into doing Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” but he went with his gut and that meant channeling a little Nat King Cole. Iovine wasn’t pleased, but the judges give a standing ovation after a intimate, stripped down performance that Casey really put his heart and soul into. Whether “Nature Boy” defines him as an artist remains to be seen. But Abrams fans surely loved this and many people on the fence likely did, too … Casey Abrams – Nature Boy (American Idol) Was it the best of the night? If not, who was? Vote after the jump:

Casey Abrams Redeems Himself On ‘American Idol’ With ‘Your Song’

Singer even cleans up his look during Elton John week — though the trademark beard stays put. By Adam Graham Casey Abrams performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX Following last week’s dramatic judges’ save, Casey Abrams was reborn on Wednesday’s (March 30) “American Idol.” Abrams initially came into the competition one of the favorites to win it all, though a series of health problems and a couple of bum performances — including last week’s train-wreck take on Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” — stalled his momentum to the point where America sent him packing. But the judges threw their weight behind the shaggy-haired soul man, and this week it was up to him to prove they made the right decision. But first, he had to deal with the fallout from last week’s performance. When mentor Jimmy Iovine rolled tape of Abrams’ Motown week effort, the singer found it difficult to even watch. “You know what was wrong with that performance?” Iovine asked. Abrams sheepishly replied “some … things?” while Iovine corrected him: “Everything!” Iovine went on to say Abrams “killed himself” with the Gaye cover, saying he’d lost his way in the competition and needed to refocus. Producer Rodney Jerkins was just as critical, but had a far more concrete solution to Abrams’ problems: “Get rid of the beard.” Abrams took Jerkins’ advice to heart and took his mug to Baxter Finley, a Los Angeles barber shop, where a team of skilled professionals trimmed his bushy facial fuzz and hacked away at his unkempt hair. The results weren’t unveiled until Abrams hit the “Idol” stage, though it wasn’t as dramatic as the segment led viewers to believe. Instead, Abrams’ look was simply a fresher, cleaner version of the wild man he’d come to be known as — Abrams 2.0, if you will. His performance was where he really showed his rededication to the competition. Taking on Elton John’s “Your Song,” Abrams stayed seated and didn’t do laps around the studio as he did during Motown week or thrash in place as he did during his risky take on Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” two weeks prior. He dialed himself way back, delivering the song in a comfortable, heartfelt manner and letting the lyrics take over. (Some tabloid reports have tied Abrams to fellow contestant Haley Reinhart, though there was no word whether he was singing the song to his alleged new squeeze.) Eventually, he let out his inner Casey, grunting a few notes near the song’s close, but overall it was the most reserved he’d been onstage yet. He delivered a high closing note that noted music scholar Randy Jackson would later identify as a Major 9. Jackson called the performance “brilliant,” “nice” and “tender,” while Steven Tyler praised Abrams’ range of styles, saying that makes him a “true artist.” Jennifer Lopez called the performance “very Casey” and reiterated that the judges made the correct decision by keeping him around. “Along the way, we’ve had to make some hard decisions and send some really, really great people home, and I’ve lost sleep over that. But one decision I didn’t lose one ounce of sleep over was saving you,” she said. “I slept like a baby!” What did you think of Casey Abrams’ performance? Let us know in the comments! Casey Abrams’ Save On ‘American Idol’: Fans React!

Most commenters thought the ‘Idol’ judges made the right decision to keep the quirky, bearded contestant on the show. By Gil Kaufman Casey Abrams Photo: FOX Casey Abrams looked like he was going to be sick when the “American Idol” judges announced on Thursday night that they had no doubt that he deserved this season’s one-and-only save. The bearded bass plucker tried to look happy, but the shock of the moment nearly dropped him to his knees, even as Randy, Jennifer and Steven explained to him that they were equally surprised he was this week’s lowest vote getter and that they couldn’t let such a prodigious talent slip away so soon. Based on the comments you made after Thursday night’s suspense-packed elimination show, most of you are on Team Casey, as well. “The people in America should recognize when they have tremendous artists like Casey and don’t vote them out just like that,” wrote Sharon. “The judges [were] completely right, CASEY deserves to be there, he is a unique [and] talented artist. CASEY YOU ROCK!!!!!” Peggy Sue couldn’t have agreed more, writing, “I’m glad the judges used their save on Casey. The save is meant to keep a flub-up happening such as someone going home too early, and the only other person I would want to save is James [Durbin] (maybe Jacob [Lusk]). It’s a good reminder for America to vote for their favorites, whether you think they are safe or not. Casey is a little bit unsteady — he is clearly very musical and fun and creative. He needs to use all of that to show us how he could entertain us in the big world, not in his backyard show.” Seeing Casey on the brink of elimination was a total shock for Sweetum29, who said Abrams deserved another chance thanks to his unique voice and winning personality. If anything, Sweetum wondered just what in the heck was wrong with America’s voters, opining, “This man always sings great and gives the audience a show instead of just standing in one spot blowing out a tune.” Among the dissenters was Scooter_88, who wrote that while Abrams and Paul McDonald are among the most talented musicians on season 10, “[they] do not have pop voices, so they will probably never win this show.” Sheila seconded that emotion, while adding, emphatically, that there was “nothing so special with his voice!!! he always yell[s] or scream[s] … very irritating.” Others referred to the bearded, J.Lo-anointed sex symbol as a “cheap imitation of [forgotten season-five winner] Taylor Hicks, but at least Taylor could sing. I think the judges wasted their save.” Perhaps Candy summed up the hirsute singer’s polarizing effect on some voters best with the pointed response, “Casey as the lowest is no surprise to me. His performances have been weird, he looks weird, he sounds weird, he acts weird, and he IS weird.” Reader Rimersh pointed out one of the long-running ironies of “Idol” voting, that “when someone is a clear favorite many will not vote,” which could explain how the heavily hyped Abrams ended up near the abyss. Three weeks into the American Idol finals, we were treated to our first surprise. Our first shock, really. Following an off night on Wednesday for a couple of THG favorites – Thia Megia and Casey Abrams – they found themselves in the bottom three along with Stefano Langone. It was a scary few moments for those of us who love Thia’s voice and Casey’s originality. In the end, Megia and Langone were told to join the other, safe contestants, while millions of jaws crashed to the floor when Ryan told Casey he had been voted out. He went back to “I Don’t Need No Doctor” in an attempt to be saved, but was told a few lines into the performance to stop because… Did the judges make the right choice this week? … the panel voted unanimously to save him! “We just want you to get back to being the musician that you are,” Jennifer said. “No more antics… You deserve to be here.” Two finalists will be voted out next Thursday, as Abrams stood on stage, truly taken aback and responding: “I thought that they wouldn’t use the save, because there’s 11 people. It’s unreal. I started singing, and the fact that you cut it scared the stuff out of me.”
