Pat Summerall Dies; NFL Star, Broadcaster Was 82

Pat Summerall has passed away, according to reports. The former NFL star and longtime broadcaster with CBS and Fox Sports was 82 years old. His cause of death has not been revealed. Before becoming known to generations of fans as one of football’s best known TV personalities, Pat was a star kicker with the Lions, Cardinals and Giants. Partnering with John Madden, Summerall called the Super Bowl in 1982, the highest rated game of all time, along with 15 other Super Bowl contests. His final game was Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3, 2002, when the Patriots stunned the Rams on a last-second field goal by Adam Vinatieri. Watch and listen to Pat on the call below! Super Bowl XXXVI – Adam Vinatieri Game-Winning FG (Patriots vs. Rams) In a statement Tuesday, Madden said: “Pat was my broadcasting partner for a long time, but more than that he was my friend for all of these years.” “He was a great broadcaster and a great man. He always had a joke.” “We never had one argument, and that was because of Pat.” “Pat never complained and we never had an unhappy moment. He was something very special. Pat Summerall is the voice of football and always will be.” Summerall, who also called 27 Masters (golf) and 21 U.S. Opens (tennis) for CBS, had been in steadily declining health since a 2004 liver transplant. The giant of broadcasting was honored as such as a living legend, being inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1999. R.I.P.

Howard Stern Debut Doesn’t Boost ‘America’s Got Talent’ Ratings

Despite the hype surrounding Stern’s debut, the show’s ratings are down more than 15 percent from last year. By Gil Kaufman Howard Stern Photo: MTV News Over the past week it has felt like Howard Stern was everywhere. The self-proclaimed “King of All Media” was doing his best to make that title sing in the lead-up to his debut as a judge on “America’s Got Talent,” by doing a rare publicity swing of talk shows and feature interviews. He was excited and he wanted America to be excited, and by the looks of the blanket ads, billboards and promotional stunts, NBC clearly thought that adding the controversial shock jock to the mix on the family-friendly show was going to be big news. Stern did his part
, delivering a warmer, fuzzier version of his outrageous radio persona on Monday night’s two-hour debut and earning almost universal praise
for his playful, personal touch. The ratings, however, were another matter. According to overnight figures from Nielsen, Monday’s show was seen by 10.3 million viewers and earned a 3.6 rating, which was solid, but meant that viewership was down 33 percent (from 15.3 million) and ratings fell 16 percent from last year’s debut (4.3). Stern spent a while on his SiriusXM satellite radio show on Monday tamping down expectations for the first night’s ratings, mixing a cocktail of his own self-deprecation with the cold-hard facts about the competition. According to Entertainment Weekly unlike last year, when “AGT” bowed at the end of May and was paired with the first season of “The Voice,” Monday night’s episode went up against the one-hour season finale of “How I Met Your Mother,” as well as the season finales of “Two and a Half Men” and “Mike & Molly.” Oh, and it also had to contend with the penultimate performance night on “Dancing with the Stars.” While the ratings may not have been the kind of slam-dunk success NBC was hoping for, Stern may have one less potential headache to deal with (for now). After lambasting NBC for hiring Stern for the show
, citing the broadcasting veteran’s more risqu

Typically, Kathleen Parker Finds It Ridiculous That Beck or Palin Can Complain About Media Bias

Washington Post columnist and incoming CNN prime-time talk-show host Kathleen Parker is still auditioning for liberal-media accolades. In Wednesday’s Post she offered another shovel of her  frenzied distaste for prayer and G-O-D talk in public as she dismissed the Glenn Beck rally, especially the notion that Beck or Sarah Palin could blame the news media for hostility and bias. The media made these people rich , Parker insisted: Oh, that’s right, The Media. Never mind that Beck is one of the richest members of the media. Or that Palin has banked millions primarily because The Media can’t get enough of her. But what’s an exorcism without a demon? And who better to cast into the nether regions than the guys lugging camera lights? That’s an interesting line for someone whose assaults on Palin and other conservatives made her a millionaire CNN host. But conservatives have never focused their media-bias complaints on “guys lugging camera lights,” but the people who adore Obama and other liberals in front of the cameras. Parker also made her usual female-version-of-Scarborough complaints about how poor Barack Obama is the subject of juiced-up right-wing paranoia and conspiracy theories about his aggressive aggrandizement of government action: And the darkness? Creeping communism brought to us by President you-know-who. Conspiracy theories and paranoia are not unfamiliar to those who have wrestled the demon alcohol. Like other successful revivalists — and giving the devil his due — Beck is right about many things. Tens of thousands joined him in Washington and watch him each night on television for a reason. But he also is messianic and betrays the grandiosity of the addict. Let’s hope Glenn gets well soon. Don Surber ably put Parker in her place, that place where her talk-show partner Eliot Spitzer had demons of his own: Ridiculing his alcoholism after agreeing to appear nightly on an hourlong show electronically beside a man whose sexual addiction and proclivities cost him his job as governor of New York is humorously ironic. Instead of picking at Beck’s speck, she might try dislodging that log in her broadcasting partner’s eye.

Jay-Z’s Surprise Outdoor ‘David Letterman’ Performance Canceled

Secret Jay-Z concert atop the famed Ed Sullivan Theater marquee was nixed days before the event. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jay-Z Photo: C. Flanigan/ WireImage Jay-Z apparently had a big surprise in store for unsuspecting crowds milling about Midtown Manhattan on Monday: a mini-concert on top of the Ed Sullivan Theater’s marquee, which would air on “The Late Show With David Letterman.” However, the event was nixed once details about the show, which was supposed to remain under wraps, leaked to the public. A spokesperson for New York’s Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting released a statement saying that the decision to pull the plug on the event stemmed from news of the secret show being leaked. “There was discussion of a concert, and ultimately it was decided there would be no permit,” said Julianne Cho, associate commissioner, Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting in a statement e-mailed to MTV News. “Many permits are granted on the condition that the event is not made public beforehand for capacity and security reasons,” the statement continued. “This event was made public.” At press time, reps for Jay-Z had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment, and the status of his “Letterman” appearance was unclear. The decision to cancel Hov’s concert also comes days after fans swarmed downtown New York’s South Street Seaport to catch a free show from hip-hop sensation Drake. The New York Post reported on Friday (June 18) that the event organizers had to fork over $100,000 beforehand to cover the expected overtime costs for New York City workers and police dispatched to handle the show. Outdoor performances are nothing new for Letterman: Last year Paul McCartney took to the Ed Sullivan theater’s legendary marquee for his appearance on the show. Related Artists Jay-Z

CNN Hopes to Replace Larry King with Piers Morgan; Confuse Got Talent Viewers

Sad news, the 700,000 or so viewers that still tune into Larry King Live! Your favorite suspendered host allegedly has only until the autumn to croak “You’re on, caller” into the mic because CNN is finally replacing Larry King with someone a little younger, a little hipper and a little less likely to cite Arthur Godfrey as his broadcasting inspiration.
