Are You Looking Forward to a Bunch of Homophobic Super Bowl Commercials?

I hate this. I hate the Super Bowl. Hate it. Worst of all, I hate the cavalcade of expensive, often-offensive commercials that come with the Super Bowl. Extended families and fraternities and crochet klatches gather for the big event, and what do they see? Unabashedly gay-unfriendly commercials like the following Doritos ads , which are being considered for air. Look, straight people doing suggestively gay things — but for your amusement! Comedy! I hate this.

Now Even the Pope is On the Social Network Bandwagon

Might The Social Network be God’s choice to win Best Picture? “Entering cyberspace,” Pope Benedict said today in an address essentially giving his blessing to social networking, “can be a sign of an authentic search for personal encounters with others, provided that attention is paid to avoiding dangers such as enclosing oneself in a sort of parallel existence, or excessive exposure to the virtual world. In the search for sharing, for ‘friends,’ there is the challenge to be authentic and faithful, and not give in to the illusion of constructing an artificial public profile for oneself.” Huh. I always took him for more of a Black Swan guy. [ Reuters ]

Atheists Supply Less Than 1% Of Prison Populations, While Christians Make -Up 75%.

Atheists Supply Less Than 1% Of Prison Populations ————————————————– It's suprising how many people say to me, “You're an Atheist? You must have no conscience about commiting crime then.” Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, if we examine the population of our prisons, we see a very different picture: In “The New Criminology”, Max D. Schlapp and Edward E. Smith say that two generations of statisticians found that the ratio of convicts without religious training is about 1/10 of 1%. W. T. Root, professor of psychology at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, examined 1,916 prisoners and said “Indifference to religion, due to thought, strengthens character,” adding that Unitarians, Agnostics, Atheists and Free-Thinkers are absent from penitentiariers or nearly so. During 10 years in Sing-Sing, those executed for murder were 65% Catholics, 26% Protestants, 6% Hebrew, 2% Pagan, and less than 1/3 of 1% non-religious. Steiner and Swancara surveyed Canadian prisons and found 1,294 Catholics, 435 Anglicans, 241 Methodists, 135 Baptists, and 1 Unitarian. Dr. Christian, Superintendant of the NY State Reformatories, checked 22,000 prison inmates and found only 4 college graduates. In “Who's Who” 91% were college graduates, and he commented that “intelligence and knowledge produce right living” and that “crime is the offspring of superstition and ignorance.” Surveyed Massachusetts reformatories found every inmate religious, carefully herded by chaplins. In Joliet, there were 2,888 Catholics, 1,020 Baptists, 617 Methodists and 0 non-religious. Michigan had 82,000 Baptists and 83,000 Jews in their state population. But in the prisons, there were 22 times as many Baptists as Jews, and 18 times as many Methodists as Jews. In Sing-Sing, there were 1,553 total inmates with 855 of them Catholics (over half), 518 Protestants, 177 Jews and 8 non- religious. There's a very interesting qualified statistic. Steiner first surveyed 27 states, and found 19,400 Christians, 5,000 with no preference, and only 3 Agnostics (one each in Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Illinois). A later, more complete survey found 60,605 Christians, 5,000 Jews, 131 Pagans, 4,000 no preference, and only 3 Agnostics. In one 29-state survey, Steiner found 15 unbelievers, Spirtualists, Theosophists, Deists, Pantheists and 1 Agnostic among nearly 83,000 inmates. Calling all 15 “anti-christians” made it one half person to each state. Elmira reformatory overshadowed all, with nearly 31,000 inmates, including 15,694 Catholics (half), and 10,968 Protestants, 4,000 Jews, 325 refusing to answer, and 0 unbelievers. In the East, over 64% of inmates are Catholics. In the national prison population they average 50%. A national census found Catholics 15%. They count from the diaper up. Hardly 12% are old enough to commit a crime. Half of these are women. That leaves an adult Catholic population of 6% supplying 50% of the prison population. Liverpool, England produces three percent as many young criminals as Birmingham, a larger city, 28% coming from Catholic schools. What does this tell you about parochial school systems or claims that religion is the guardian of morals? * Fifty-two percent of people belong to no church, yet live clean lives and * * supply less than 1% of the total criminal population. So much for * * religious indoctrination ————————————————————————————————- Now, I ain't saying that I'm an athiest, I'm just saying……….. added by: keithponder

Michael Moore Touts Ground Zero Mosque, Suggests McDonald’s Worse Than Terrorists

Some think of September 11 as a date for solemn remembrance. Others see it as another occasion for idiocy. Take Michael Moore’s 9/11 message : I am opposed to the building of the “mosque” two blocks from Ground Zero. I want it built on Ground Zero. He says it’s because Islam was “stolen” from the real Muslims at the Twin Towers, and it should be given back on the same spot. But he’s not finished: There is a McDonald’s two blocks from Ground Zero. Trust me, McDonald’s has killed far more people than the terrorists. And the terrorists remind Moore of the Catholics on the Supreme Court: Let’s face it, all religions have their whackos. Catholics have O’Reilly, Gingrich, Hannity and Clarence Thomas (in fact all five conservatives who dominate the Supreme Court are Catholic). Protestants have Pat Robertson and too many to list here. The Mormons have Glenn Beck. Jews have Crazy Eddie. But we don’t judge whole religions on just the actions of their whackos. Unless they’re Methodists. Moore actually finished by suggesting the wisest thing to do on 9/11 is donate to the Ground Zero Mosque. He’s offering to match the first $10,000: Friends, we all have a responsibility NOW to make sure that Muslim community center gets built. Once again, 70% of the country (the same number that initially supported the Iraq War) is on the wrong side and want the “mosque” moved. Enormous pressure has been put on the Imam to stop his project. We have to turn this thing around. Are we going to let the bullies and thugs win another one? Aren’t you fed up by now? When would be a good time to take our country back from the haters? I say right now. Let’s each of us make a statement by donating to the building of this community center! It’s a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and you can donate a dollar or ten dollars (or more) right now through a secure pay pal account by clicking here . I will personally match the first $10,000 raised (forward your PayPal receipt to webguy@michaelmoore.com ). If each one of you reading this blog/email donated just a couple of dollars, that would give the center over $6 million, more than what Donald Trump has offered to buy the Imam out. C’mon everyone, let’s pitch in and help those who are being debased for simply wanting to do something good. We could all make a huge statement of love on this solemn day. Sometimes, Moore sounds way too close to the satirical Moore character in An American Carol.

Hardball: Beck’s ‘Bandwagon of Bigotry and Fear’ Kind of Like KKK

On Tuesday, NewsBusters identified the media’s emerging strategy of discrediting Glenn Beck by pitting his religious beliefs against other Christians. Mere hours later, as if on cue, MSNBC was all over it. “Hardball” host Chris Matthews invited on liberal Salon editor Joan Walsh and Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, two people who are something less than experts on the religious right, to help him psychoanalyze conservatives. Their conclusion was all too predictable: Beck’s rhetoric is harmful to Catholics and smacks of anti-Papal Klan rallies. It has now been established by the media that Mormons like Beck are anti-evangelical, anti-Catholic, and possibly just plain anti-Christian. Prepare yourself for liberals who bash conservative Christians at every turn to suddenly care about Christians getting bashed (video below with partial transcript): BOB SHRUM, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Yes, that used to be the rule. But Beck himself clearly is riding a bandwagon of bigotry and fear to gather millions of followers and millions of dollars. He`s made anti-Muslim remarks. He`s made remarks about the president that are certainly tinged with racial overtones. So why wouldn`t he associate with an anti-Catholic? CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: OK, let me get to the roots of this because a lot of this stuff going on on the right has its roots, Joan — and you know, Bob, well — back in the old roots, way back with the “no nothings,” the KKK, the nativists. There`s a smell to this commentary by Hagee, which is anybody that has their religious vaguely from Europe or somewhere else or from Rome, that somehow, it`s bad, it`s un-American. It`s the old nativist cry against the newcomer. But we thought this was sort of dying off somewhere during World War II, when, you know, several million Catholics were fighting the bad guys. We thought this was over with, you and I and Bob. Apparently, it`s still going on with Hagee and his new buddy, Glenn Beck. JOAN WALSH, SALON: Well, you know, I`ve seen this in the mosque debate, as well. We know that, you know, our ancestors, and not very far back, Chris, our very right to participate in public life was questioned because we were supposedly, you know, the subjects of a foreign power, the pope. And so, you know, there`s been a lot of this in right-wing politics for a long time. There have been a lot of battles, and many Catholics have felt, frankly, unwelcome in the Christian right. The other thing, though, that Beck is trying to do here is to unite the Tea Party with the Christian right — MATTHEWS: Right. WALSH: — which has felt a little bit excluded by the Tea Party. If you look at polls, Tea Partiers are less into the Christian right than they are into, say, big business. And it`s been — MATTHEWS: Yes. WALSH: There`s been a little bit of waning of their power, so that`s the other thing that went on on Saturday. It was a dark day when Catholics were discouraged from civil activity because of religious beliefs, and liberals like Walsh will be sure to explain that while attacking civil activists over their religious beliefs. Would that pro-life Catholics were treated with such kid gloves at MSNBC. Or does religious sensitivity only apply to the liberal variety?

Vatican Honors Blues Brothers

Thirty years after Jake and Elwood Blues went on their mission from God, the Vatican has issued an endorsement of The Blues Brothers as “recommended viewing for Catholics everywhere.” The brothers’ mission to raise money for the orphanage where they were raised apparently took on a little more weight than the wrist-slapping “penguin” nun in the final judgment, but there you have it. Newt Gingrich, Carpetbagger For God, Made a Movie About the Pope

Not the current pope, alas, who could actually use some conservative hagiographical spin right about now, but the previous pope — John Paul II, whose efforts to combat totalitarianism through faith are chronicled in the Gingrich-produced documentary Nine Days That Changed the World . The former House Speaker and Georgia Republican has traveled with the film to the late pope’s homeland of Poland, where he spoke Wednesday of the political change that Catholicism can effect under Communist regimes in Cuba and China. And, one can only presume, in America, where the film will make the university rounds this fall just in time to combat the Obama-flavored socialist scourge jockeying for public office. Hold it just a second, Newt — I thought you were a Baptist ?
