Momo Challenge Urges Kids to Harm Themselves. Don’t Let Them.

The Momo Challenge is here, and it makes the Tide Pod challenge look like a parent's dream. A horrifying image appears in children's videos and on their messaging apps, instructing them to harm themselves and others or even to commit suicide. And the worst thing is that it's been going on for much longer than anyone realized. Our nightmares have a new face. Reports have been circulating about a “challenge” appearing on WhatsApp and YouTube and targeted at young children. Children will watch a YouTube video that appears to be a children's television program and they will see Momo during a jarring intermission. Alternatively, they will simply seek out Momo on a messaging app like WhatsApp. A scary face frightening children is only the beginning, however. “Momo” then challenges children, sometimes in stages. Ultimately, this challenge — like some other disturbing pranks played on children — can cause them to harm themselves. Some of these messages include instructions on how to commit suicide. Others are even more insidiious. One of the reports circulating on social media said that children were instructed by “Momo” to turn on a gas stove while everyone is asleep. That report was not confirmed, but sends chills down people's spines. The first reports of this challenge arose in the summer of 2018. So why haven't children been raising the alarm? Why are most people only hearing about it now? For one thing, the children who are targeted are the youngest demographics, usually with ages in the single digits. But most significantly, some of the Momo material threatens to hurt or kill the parents of children who tell. Since this story began circulating, we've also seen stories of parents asking their children about it, only to have the children burst into tears of fear and relief. Little kids rarely have the life experience or perspective to understand when a threat is or is not plausible. There is no doubt that the Momo Challenge has scared the pants off of plenty of people, including young children and concerned parents. There is, however, good news. As multiple outlets have reported after taking a good, hard look at the story, there's less danger than there appears. While a small number of international deaths have been “linked to” Momo, there is no proof that they died because of the challenge. In fact, Forbes reports that this story has spread out of proportion among worried parents, not unlike past viral pranks. It's not that no one ever ate Tide Pods or that no teen has ever ingested hand sanitizer in an effort to get drunk. It's just that people perceive it as having happened much more than it actually did. Parenting experts recommend that parents use this as an opportunity to talk to their children about dangers on the internet. This includes strangers, pranks, and the “challenge culture” that infests parts of social media. It's also a good idea for parents to reconsider giving very young children unfiltered access to YouTube. We would make a radical suggestion that parents spend time around their wee ones so that they can always see or at least hear what they're watching. You know what's really sad? The face seen as “Momo” is originally a sculpture by an artist named Midori Hayashi. It's a fine piece, and was never meant to be used like this.

Jesus Take The Phones: Momo Challenge Reportedly Urges Kids To Take Their Own Life

Source: picture alliance / Getty The Dangerous Wack Challenges Continue A disturbing challenge has made waves in the U.K. that’s threatening the lives of young people. According to CBS News , parents and police are issuing warnings against a WhatsApp messaging challenge called the “Momo game” or the “Momo challenge.” The challenge first gained buzz last summer, and mostly children or teens have been known to participate. It requires them to contact a stranger under the name “Momo” using a creepy image. Then, through WhatsApp correspondence, they encourage participants to carry out various tasks if they want to avoid being “cursed.” Some of these tasks include self-harm, and Momo even insists the participants provide photographic evidence to continue the game. Ultimately, the game ends with Momo telling the participant to kill themselves and record it for social media. The “Momo” image is taken from an actual sculpture called “Mother Bird” by Japanese artist Keisuke Aisawa . There’s nothing to indicate Aisawa’s company Link Factory had anything to do with the creation or execution of the Momo challenge. Mariah Carey Hilariously Wins the #10YearChallenge

Time? Mariah Carey doesn’t know her. The legendary singer is facing some controversial accusations , but she’s still dominating on social media. She threw her hat into the ring for the 10 Year Challenge and we have to say it: she won. The 10 Year Challenge has been all over social media for the past week. Generally, people share a photo from 2019 and a photo from 2009 for comparison. As you are about to see, Mariah Carey took a different approach. “I don’t get this 10 year challenge,” Mariah admitted on both Twitter and Instagram. She continued, writing that “time is not something I acknowledge.” That much is clear from her photo. These are both the same photo placed side-by-side. Mariah’s caption includes a clarification: “Picture taken at some point prior to today,” Mariah writes beside a little asterisk. She could have ignored the challenge like so many people have. Instead, she took a shot and reminded everyone that she can dominate social media with minimal effort. Of course, some have suggested that Mariah may have had a less humorous reason for not wanting to participate. In some of Mariah’s more recent appearances, her look has attracted confusion, ridicule, and cruel comments from fans. She may have wanted to avoid any of that by not posting a visual, side-by-side reminder of how different she looks now than she once did. If so, she would not be alone in abstaining from the challenge. From illness to pregnancy to the ravages of life, a lot of people don’t feel too great about how they’re looking in 2019 selfies. This is a bigger issue for celebrity women, whose fans seem confused when they no longer look like they did when they were 20. The 10 Year Challenge has garnered a number of reactions. Those of us who were already adults in 2009 sometimes see a friend or peer’s 2009 photo in which they were a tween and feel centuries old. Others have simply shown how much of a glow-up they’ve experienced — or at least, how much better their current camera works. A few trans folks, like Caitlyn Jenner, have used it to highlight their transitions into their authentic selves. Good for them. Others have used the challenge to raise environmental concerns, such as showing how much glaciers have decreased in size in just one decade. As wilth all such challenges, it’s completely optional. Any pressure to participate exists only in your own mind. Some people choose to own their new look, even if it is radically different than what it once was. But that’s their choice. Mariah made hers. Fans, at least, seemed to support that. “If Mariah Carey says that time does not exist,” one fan tweeted. “Then time does not exist PERIOD.” “Me walking in late with a Starbucks drink…..uhhh time is not something I acknowledge,” reads another fan tweet. Another wrote: “This is the energy you need to leave work and start your weekend now.” That, as the kids say, is a mood. Twitter Can’t Stop Debating #LHHMIA’s Most Dramatic Storyline: Did Shay FINALLY Fix Her Damn Wigs?

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Shays’ Wig Is The LHHMIA Drama If you recall, the biggest story of Love & Hip-Hop: Miami last year besides Amara La Negra was the status of Shay’s wig . She got continuously dragged for the dusty crustiness of her wig situation. Now, she’s vowed to fix it…but the results are mixed. One thing is certain: her wig at least looks better than new nemesis Joy, who she is fighting Pleasure P over. Still, is her wig an ashy mess or is it revived like a synthetic Lazarus? Shay is pretty but the wig gotta go #LHHMIA pic.twitter.com/fPgktzRfSg — Kat (@Katheri51833189) January 17, 2019 Let Twitter tell it…

Bird Box Challenge: Netflix Begs Fans to STOP Dangerous Meme

Netflix’s hit film Bird Box took viewers and Twitter by storm and spawned hilarious memes . Unfortunately, it also inspired the Bird Box Challenge, in which people film themselves blindfolded. This is so dangerous that Netflix has put out a PSA begging people to not deliberately blind themselves. Bird Box was a hit on Netflix during this holiday season. It was thrilling and compelling and Sandra Bullock is, as always, an inspired casting choice. Unfortunately, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing, as evidenced by people participating in the “Bird Box Challenge.” In the film, the characters must wear blindfolds most of the time in order to avoid being driven to kill themselves by violent apparitions. Some Netflix viewers with too much time on their hands decided to “challenge” themselves to navigate while  blindfolded. Whether it’s in their homes or outdoors, the results tend to be either boring, messy, or dangerous. Putting on a blindfold does not magically transform you into the titular character of Daredevil . In fact, outside of the bedroom, it usually just leads to injuries. This is so bad that Netflix themselves have stepped in on social media. In a tweet on Wednesday, Netflix implored their followers to let this trend die as quickly as it sprang into being. “Can’t believe I have to say this,” the tweet begins. “But: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE.” “We don’t know how this started,” Netflix says. “And we appreciate the love,” “But Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019,” the tweet reads. Netflix concludes: “and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.” That’s a pretty good wish. Unlike actual memes, which involve photos and videos and are usually harmless, challenge culture can be dangerous. Popular on video-sharing sites and especially on YouTube, people vie for social media clout by emulating others. The pressure to make your video not only watchable but sensational — in the hopes of going viral — can be dangerous. Participants — especially teens, but also grown-ass adults — can and do endanger themselves in their desperate effort for clicks. Viral fame can transform someone’s life, so they’re willing to risk it all. But you know what else can change your life? A life-altering injury . It’s right there in the name. This of course brings to mind a challenge that was passed around in January of 2018. Harmless memes shared on social media about forbidden snacks — household items that people had resisted eating as children — spawned a challenge. The Tide Pod Challenge was mostly an inflated joke, as people would edit videos to make it appear that they ate laundry detergent. There were people who, perhaps not realizing that the videos were edited, were not in on the joke. A few people tried to earn social media clout by actually putting tide pods into their mouths. Though only a handful of people genuinely participated, we would remind members of the TGH Nation: please do not ingest bleach. Just as you would not ingest dish soap in the hopes of racking up YouTube views, please do not participate in the Bird Box challenge. We don’t know how many people are actually doing it and how many are filming themselves acting out rehearsed blunders. Regardless, actually depriving yourself of eyesight for fun is just a recipe for disaster. Head injuries are no joke. And quite frankly, neither is a stubbed toe. If you are lucky enough to have eyesight, use it to navigate your world safely. Not everyone is so lucky. View Slideshow: Bird Box Memes Hilariously Take Over Twitter
