Nick Cannon is recuperating after suffering a “mild kidney failure,” the 31-year-old’s wife Mariah Carey announced on Twitter today. Mariah uploaded a photo of herself with hubby Nick from inside his Aspen, Colorado hospital room. “We’re trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful,” she wrote on her official website, adding that doctors tried — and failed — to remove her from Cannon’s room. “We’re doing OK but we’re stranded in Aspen,” Carey added. “I know, we could be in a lot worse places, but the truth is as long as we’re together, we’re OK.” I’m not trying to make light out of the situation because it’s a serious moment that’s very tough on all of us,” Carey, mother to twins Moroccan and Monroe, wrote. “So please keep us and our family in your prayers.” We hope Nick gets better soon! Pop star debuts ‘Happy New Year,’ a swaggerfied slow jam featuring Jaden Smith. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: George Pimentel / WireImage Justin Bieber isn’t new to creating holiday songs using his new-millennium, R&B swagger, as evidenced on his Christmas album, Under The Mistletoe . And this weekend, he gave New Year’s a try. The singer tweeted a New Year’s-themed track, “Happy New Year,” which features his pal Jaden Smith rapping. The slow jam is certainly swaggerfied but also reflective, featuring lyrics that both play up the singer’s pop-star image and look ahead to a more hopeful year. “I’m gonna make your cheeks red when I kiss your neck/Girl I’m never leavin’ ’cause you are the best baby,” he sings. “I wanna give you everything/Never feel ’cause girl you’re coming home with me.” In a spoken breakdown, he says, “2012 is the year to be better, stronger and closer to the people around you. So grab someone special, and just, you know.” Smith also shows some bad-boy personality and proves that rapping runs in the Smith DNA. He raps, ” ‘Cause 2012 is the year of the love/And we gon’ start it off/We can get a plane today and get a car toma’/We don’t do it small at all/No girl tell me what I gotta to do/I can be the beat that you rockin’ to/I can do anything, nothing is impossible, especially with you girl/And I never need a new girl/This love is true girl/Aye welcome to the crew girl.” Not only was Bieber gracing fans with new tracks over the weekend, but he also took the stage during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2012” in Times Square, not far from where his lady love Selena Gomez was hosting “NYE in NYC 2012.” The twosome later partied together at Glass House, E! News reports. A source says, “He…danced with Selena, showing off, picking her up and swinging her around like it was ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ ” Bieber recently debuted another track “Be Alright,” during his holiday special, “Justin Bieber: Home For The Holidays.” He’s expected to drop his new album, Believe , later this year. Jennifer Lopez and Casper Smart got down and dirty with each other on New Year’s Eve. The American Idol judge and the 24-year backup dancer spent the weekend in Miami Beach, according to People , starting the party on Thursday night at nightclub Amnesia. “They were very sexy with each other, dancing and bouncing around and making out,” a witness says , adding that the pair hung out until 3 a.m. “They couldn’t help but attract attention, although Jennifer was trying to lie low from onlookers.” Marc Anthony is reportedly steamed over J. Lo’s romance with Smart, even threatening to take away custody of her children , but another source says Lopez looked “very happy” at the hot spot. She and Smart are hotter than ever, in fact, as insiders confirm they went out on a yacht Friday afternoon, while J. Lo went shopping with her daughter on Saturday afternoon. The couple stayed at a private residence all weekend and rang in 2012 at the Soho Beach House with friends. Take that, Marc! [Photos: Pacific Coast News]
Over 1,500 mourners turned out today for a memorial service in honor of Ben Breedlove, an 18-year old from Texas who died from a heart attack on Christmas Day. Prior to his passing, however, Breedlove posted a few YouTube videos that detailed his brushes with death and his appreciation for life. He showed no fear of whatever lay ahead, as depicted below: Ben Breedlove Life Story, Part 1 “It’s exciting to know that Ben planted a seed in people’s mind to begin thinking about things that really do matter in life,” Ben’s mother, Deanne Breedlove, told ABC News’ Austin affiliate KVUE at the memorial. “You know, we all have hope. Everyone has challenges, but we have a real hope and he saw that. He felt the peace of God when he had those glimpses into heaven and heavenly presence.” Ben’s videos have been viewed over 2.3 million times and a fund been established on behalf of his family to help spread Breedlove’s message around the world, while also supporting others with his condition, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Follow the link above to learn more. In one of his videos, Breedlove references his favorite artist, Kid Cudi, quoting one of his songs. In response, the rapper ha blogged the following: “This has really touched my heart in a way I can’t describe, this is why I do what I do. Why I write my life, and why I love you all so much. We love you Ben. Forever. Thank you for loving me.”
Tom Cruise has still got it. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol continues to dominate the holiday box office, raking in an estimated $31.3 million over the three-day (Friday to Sunday) weekend. That represents a 6 percent jump from Christmas weekend, when it also led the field. Ghost Protocol , the fourth entry in the franchise, has now made $134.1M total. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Trailer M:I-4 could top the first Cruise-led installment, which earned $181 million in 1996. It’s already surpassed Mission: Impossible 3 , which topped out at $134 million. In second place this weekend was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows , which rose 9 percent to $22.1 million. The sequel has taken in $132.1 million in 17 days. The original Sherlock Holmes , by comparison, earned $165.2 million by this point. Chipwrecked jumped an impressive 45 percent to finish third at $18.3 million. The top five for the weekend: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – $31.3 mil Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows – $22.1 mil Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked – $18.3 mil War Horse – $16.9 mil The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – $16.3 mil
It was a buoyant holiday frame for the last releases of 2011, with audiences turning out in droves (and likely family-loaded minivans) to boost just about every film in theaters. Biggest congrats are in order for Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , which is indeed set to make in 17 days what Mission: Impossible III made in its entire theatrical run. And, look! A bunch more people caught the timely holiday spirit and bought a Zoo this week, along with a War Horse and, uh, Garry Marshall’s New Year’s Eve . Enjoy it while it lasts, Garry. Auld lang syne, 2011. Your holiday weekend receipts after the jump! 1. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol Gross: $31,250,000 ($134,139,000 ) Screens: 3,455 (PSA $9,045) Weeks: 3 (Change: +5.9%) Tom Cruise’s latest spy outing dominates yet again. Pop the champagne and commence the couch-jumping! (I know, I know. That joke is so 2005.) 2. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Gross: $22,095,000 ($132,100,000) Screens: 3,703 (PSA $5,967) Weeks: 3 (Change: +9.1%) Sherlock 2 may not have the flashy buzz that MI:4 has enjoyed, and it’s trailed behind Ghotocol all these weeks, but consider: its domestic tally is only $2 million behind that of the box office champ. Pat on the back, good sirs! 3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Gross: $18,250,000 ($94,609,000) Screens: 3,724 (PSA $4,901) Weeks: 3 (Change: +45%) Chipwrecked is on track to cross $100 million this week. Look at what you’ve done, America. 4. War Horse Gross: $16,940,000 ($42,969,000) Screens: 2,547 (PSA $6,651) Weeks: 2 (Change: +125.4%) At least one of Spielberg’s two new jams is picking up speed, and how : War Horse ‘s whopping increase, up 125.4 percent from last week, only solidifies those designs on the Oscars. And what a no brainer, anyway — what movie screams “Take the aunts and uncles and cousins and gramps to the movies since you’re still stuck at home after Christmas” like a movie that combines Spielbergian sentiment, old-timey war, and a horse? 5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Gross: $16,300,000 ($57,100,000) Screens: 2,914 (PSA: $5,594) Weeks: 2 (Change: +27.8%) …unless Fincher + goth punk intrigue + the Yeah Yeah Yeahs + a little rape ‘n’ revenge in the icy climes of Sweden is more your family’s style. In which case, can I come visit next Christmas? 6. We Bought a Zoo Gross: $14,300,000 ($41,787,000) Screens: 3,163 (PSA: $4,521) Weeks: 2 (Change: +52.8) Great! The new Cameron Crowe caught on better this week, probably thanks to those billboards featuring gift-wrapped exotic animals. Just another irresponsible message for audiences to eat up to add to the pile. 7. The Adventures of Tintin Gross: $12,000,000 ($47,841,000) Screens: 3,087 (PSA: $3,887) Weeks: 2 (Change: +23.6%) One out of two ain’t bad, I suppose… especially when the foreign box office is carrying the Belgian boy detective adventure to the tune of $239 million and counting. 8. New Year’s Eve Gross: $6,741,000 ($46,372,000) Screens: 2,225 (PSA: $3,030) Weeks: 4 (Change: +103.7%) Of course there were people who went to the multiplex this week, skimmed past the War Horses and Girls with the Dragon Tattoos , and the Mission: Impossibles , and thought “Y’know what? LET’S GO SEE THAT ONE ABOUT NEW YEAR’S EVE!” Of course. Just die already, movie. 9. The Darkest Hour Gross: $4,300,000 ($13,200,000) Screens: 2,327 (PSA: $1,848) Weeks: 2 (Change: +43.3%) Summit farted a new action-packed adventure into theaters this Christmas with nary a peep of marketing, so we can assume anyone who went to see The Darkest Hour — a movie about killer aliens who look like lightbulbs or light or something — were just playing movie roulette when they bought their tickets. It’ll be out of the top 10 by next week, and out of our collective consciousness even sooner. I guess when you have all that Twilight money you can create your own pre-dumping ground frame before the January dumping grounds even begin? 10. The Descendants Gross: $3,650,000 ($39,675,000) Screens: 758 (PSA: $4,815) Weeks: 7 (Change: +76%) Good on the Alexander Payne drama that, in its seventh week, it managed to sneak into the top 10 with a totally decent per-screen average on less than 800 screens to boot. Let’s see if The Descendants can prove its awards season mettle by sticking it out in the coming weeks. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ]
