Oscar Index: Actresses Gone Wild

Another week of awards-season data, developments and all-around deconstruction result in this latest edition of Oscar Index. Movieline’s bleary-eyed researchers at the Institute for the Advanced Study for Kudos Forensics have been working overtime studying the news and speculation around the awards punditocracy, observing a few major bumps here and there but a fairly steady week overall. Let’s check it out.

Watch a 60-Second Montage of James Franco Whispering Overdramatically

Whether he is playing a cultural icon, a pajama bottomed-stoner or a soap opera performance artist “whose canvas is murder,” James Franco oftentimes relies on a gravely stage whisper to deliver his lines. From anyone else’s mouth, it would sound creepy, but coming from Franco, it is acceptable and even worthy of Academy Award recognition.* In celebration of his patented delivery, New York Magazine has assembled sixty seconds worth of the actor’s most inspired dramatic whisper work over the past decade. Click through for take-off.

Dragon Tattoo Tumblr Goes Behind the Scenes With Fincher and Co.

It’s the quotidian, almost invisible bits that matter most behind the camera on a movie set. Take the sliver of video newly available on a Tumblr called Mouth Taped Shut , by all appearances another bit of authorized viral marketing for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo — this time featuring David Fincher directing Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer extolling Fincher’s virtues (and leveling a not-so-prescient Oscar-season pledge) and snapshots from the production.

What’s Her Line? Rooney Mara Gets Pointy in Latest Images From Dragon Tattoo

There’s been precious few sightings to date of Rooney Mara in character as Swedish punk-rock bisexu-hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo . Which can only be a good thing; there’s only so much toplessness a marketing campaign can really withstand in the far-off months leading up to release. But what’s this? New Rooney? Fully clothed, hooded and pointing at a dude ? Ooh la la, let us at it. (Bonus: Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer, also fully clothed!)

12 Films of Christmas: The Silent Partner

Who says a Christmas movie can’t also be a twisty crime caper? Certainly not this excerpt from Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas : Bank teller Miles (Elliott Gould) realizes that mall Santa Harry (Christopher Plummer) is casing the bank for a robbery, so Miles arranges for Harry to steal what amounts to pocket change from the drawers while Miles stashes the big bucks away for himself, knowing that Harry will be blamed for the missing money. Unfortunately for Miles, Harry knows what he’s up to, and now he’s forcing Miles to hand over the stolen loot. Can Miles outwit this dangerous criminal — as well as his bright and flirtatious co-worker Julie (Susannah York) — and get away with the perfect crime?
