Saturday night honored the best in non-prime time TV as the Daytime Emmy Awards were handed out at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. “Daytime” is classified as 2 a.m. until 6 p.m., so there was a lot of ground to cover for Anderson Cooper and Oscar the Grouch, who served as co-hosts. Despite two soap operas biting the dust this year ( All My Children and One Life to Live ), the annual award gala was a positive one across the board. Notably, despite a ratings dip and rumors of Ann Curry’s firing , NBC’s Today Show nabbed the award for Outstanding Morning Show program just the same. It’s the third for Today , breaking a tie with Good Morning America. Game on. Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa won for best talk show hosts, Jeopardy won best game show for the 29th time (yes, 29th) and so much more. Whether he is playing a cultural icon, a pajama bottomed-stoner or a soap opera performance artist “whose canvas is murder,” James Franco oftentimes relies on a gravely stage whisper to deliver his lines. From anyone else’s mouth, it would sound creepy, but coming from Franco, it is acceptable and even worthy of Academy Award recognition.* In celebration of his patented delivery, New York Magazine has assembled sixty seconds worth of the actor’s most inspired dramatic whisper work over the past decade. Photo from the set shows Franco covered in blood. By Terri Schwartz Steve Burton and James Franco on the set of “General Hospital” Photo: ABC There will be blood when James Franco returns to “General Hospital” on September 20. Despite Franco’s earlier statements to the contrary , E! landed a photo of Franco on the set of the ABC daytime soap that proves that he will in fact be reprising the role of his appropriately named serial killer, Franco. It looks like things don’t end so well for Franco’s soap alter ego, based on the smear of blood on the wall behind his head and the trickle coming out of his mouth in the photo. Or there’s a chance he’ll be bringing back the creepy by again playing a dead man in one of his character’s art exhibits, considering that’s how he was introduced to the show originally. The plot thickens! Franco made his Port Charles debut in November 2009 as an artist/serial killer who becomes obsessed with Jason Morgan (Steve Burton), who can also be seen in the recent photo. His plot arc lasted for 41 episodes and ended last August with the killer Franco vanishing without a trace. Six months later, Franco returned and filmed three more episodes in which his character tried to bust up a pretty big wedding. Franco is going to try to do that again in the upcoming episode, according to E!. This new appearance takes place on the eve of Jason Morgan and Samantha McCall’s wedding. Franco returns to Port Charles to wreak havoc on their lives after already trying to separate them in his first plot arc. When MTV caught up with the actor at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Franco called his relationship with “General Hospital” an “ongoing thing.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .

Some of television’s best and longest-running series in recent years have featured families full of crooks, mobsters, drug dealers and con artists. And just this week, a new wave of projects featuring clans of outlaws crested with ABC’ s Scoundrels , which features Virginia Madsen as a matriarch trying desperately to straighten out her crooked family. Meanwhile, in Scoundrels ‘ wake, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht (who headed HBO during the rise of The Sopranos ) acquired the rights to the Australian crime drama Underbelly , which currently features blood-related gang members, and Jamie Foxx shot a trailer for a mob family drama called Tommy’s Little Girl . In honor of this perennial programming trend, Movieline has compiled some of television’s best crime families over the years and ranked them — from funny to fearless.

According to Daytime Confidential , James Franco will be using his return to General Hospital to promote another member of his acting clan. Word is that his mother Betsy will be joining him onscreen for the soap stint; you may remember the materfamilias from Franco’s work for Funny or Die, where she explained in a very touching story how she had to kill Franco’s cat for pooping too much. Good luck, Betsy! [ Daytime Confidential ]
