‘It’s the first time it’s in 3-D — my ears are in 3-D for the first time,’ Smith tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Will Smith in “Men in Black 3” Photo: Columbia Pictures If you are a fan of “Men in Black” and “Men in Black 2,” then you should definitely plan on seeing the franchise’s third film, “Men in Black 3” when it hits theaters this weekend. Not only are our favorite suited-up agents J and K up to their old tricks, witty banter and all, but their third outing features an appropriately science-fiction-y element of time travel that introduces us to a young Agent K, expertly played by Josh Brolin . If those plot points don’t have you ready to buy tickets, take it from the series’ star Will Smith himself, who says you won’t want to miss seeing his ears in 3-D. “The fun of [this film] is trying to make it new but not so new that it don’t match,” Smith told MTV News recently. “We had to be able to create something that was brand-new, that stands on its own, and it’s been 10 years since the first movie, so there were a lot of things working against it. But it’s the first time it’s in 3-D — my ears are in 3-D for the first time,” he said with a laugh. “I’m very happy with it.” Smith went on to tell a story about another part of the film that made him happy: watching an alien chicken trip and fall. “With these types of movies, the set tends to take on the tone of the movie, the amount of silliness and things. You just see the most bizarre things on movies like this,” he said. “I saw a 7-foot-tall chicken trip and fall. You would never see that anywhere in the world! There was a chicken alien and she had these foot-and-a-half heels on so she was 7-foot-tall in a chicken outfit, and she trips and falls. I just thought that was fantastic.” Bring up the “favorite moments during filming” subject with director Barry Sonnenfeld and he’ll tell you a tale of his star’s acting skills being a bit rusty at the start of production. “On the first day of photography, we filmed Will on a blue-screen stage having to jump down [from the top of the Chrysler building], and what was great about it was that he hadn’t acted in three years and was really bad,” Sonnenfeld recalled. “Luckily, we cut out the bad stuff, but that first take we did after he hadn’t acted in three years, I was sweating because he was no good. After I yelled, ‘Cut!’ Will said, ‘Baz, I can do better! I’m really rusty!’ And within a day or two, it all worked out fine. But man, it was interesting. You know how they say ‘Once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you never forget?’ Well, Will forgot how to act for the first day or two. Luckily he wasn’t acting with other actors or it would have been really embarrassing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Men in Black 3.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Will Smith’s Reasons To See ‘MIB 3’: Alien Chickens And His Ears In 3-D
A gaggle of right-wing functionaries is furious with Clint Eastwood and Chrysler, with no less than Karl Rove calling out the actor-director- inspirational halftime huckster for a Super Bowl ad that Rove and others perceived as a thinly veiled reelection endorsement for President Obama. Wait, what ? The shit hit the fan Monday afternoon when Rove took to Fox News to protest the epic TV spot, arguing that… honestly, I have no idea. Big Hollywood’s John Nolte offered the most succinct explanation of conservative outrage — “Because Obama’s decided to eliminate moral hazard and socialize losses for anyone who employs the unions who fund his campaigns, Chrysler obviously wrote a thinly veiled thank you in the form of a reelection ad for their benefactor, and convinced a Republican icon to deliver it” — but things just got straight-up surreal with Rove (via EW ): Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com “Chicago-style politics”? Excuse me? If anything, this is Detroit politics (or economics, really), and to think Eastwood would just overlook the potential implications therein for the simple sake of a rah-rah Super Bowl message is to underestimate a pretty smart guy who once made it a two-year mission of his life to emphasize the benefits of business over politics . Anyway, Eastwood’s manager offered a beleaguered defense (“People have to understand that what he was doing was saying to America, ‘Get yourselves together – all of you – and make this a second half.’ It’s not a political thing”), but the best part came when Eastwood himself reached out to O’Reilly Factor producer Ron Mitchell to defuse the conspiracy theories, hype, conjecture, invective and the rest of it: “I just want to say that the spin stops with you guys, and there is no spin in that ad. On this I am certain. l am certainly not politically affiliated with Mr. Obama. It was meant to be a message about just about job growth and the spirit of America. I think all politicians will agree with it. I thought the spirit was OK. I am not supporting any politician at this time. Chrysler to their credit didn’t even have cars in the ad. Anything they gave me for it went for charity. If any Obama or any other politician wants to run with the spirit of that ad, go for it.” Love. It. It’s like, “Screw you and your panic; there’s plenty of room up here for anyone who wants to join me on the high road.” Now Obama doesn’t have to say a word, and the conservatives are left to either embrace the “let’s fix this” spirit that they just implicitly ascribed to the president or oppose it as a matter of ideological course — which would just reinforce the ad’s criticism of “the fog, the division, the discord and blame” crippling our discourse. Whoops! I’m still not buying a Chrysler, but hey. This is turning out all right! Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

It’s halftime. Both teams are listening to a Madonna performance that sounds eerily similar to a Lady Gaga song they’ll hear 10 years from now. It’s halftime in America too. People are out of work and they’re hurting. And they’re wondering where all their money went. Well, $12.5 billion of it went to Chrysler. In the form of a bailout. Despite some positive reviews, epically troubled musical remains as divisive as ever. By Eric Ditzian Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark Photo: Don Emmert/ AFP We’re as surprised as anyone that the folks behind have been able to transform their epically troubled musical into a satisfying piece of Broadway entertainment. In January, as news of the show’s creative and safety issues turned the then $65 million production into one of the Great White Way’s most spectacular disasters, we admitted that while there were some enjoyable aspects, you were better off popping in a DVD of a Tobey Maguire “Spider-Man” flick than trekking to New York to see the musical. What a difference a few months — and a new creative team — makes. Out went Julie Taymor, in came writers like comics vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa , and the results are just what the web-slinging wonderboy needed. We’re not the only ones who feel that way. As “Turn Off the Dark” officially left its preview phase behind and opened on Tuesday, reviews have been pouring in, and many have been positive. Not all, mind you — not even close. Unsurprisingly, “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” remains as divisive as ever. Here’s what the critics have to say. The Overall Changes “[It] has deteriorated from mindblowingly misbegotten carnival-of-the-damned to merely embarrassing dud. Awash in a garbage-gyre of expository dialogue pumped in by script doctor/comic-book vet Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, its lavish stage pictures turned to colloidal mush by director Philip William McKinley and choreographer Chase Brock, Spidey 2.0 is indeed leaner and more linear, and its story has been brutally clarified: It’s now all too clear how very, very little was there in the first place. Spider-Man violates the first rule of pop fantasy: Never lose the distinction between beautiful simplicity and rank simplemindedness.” — Scott Brown, New York The New Music “Composer/lyricists Bono and the Edge have added one campy number, Goblin’s ‘A Freak Like Me,’ but the most memorable songs offer the same emotional and melodic sweep that distinguishes their work in U2. It’s right after one such tune, the soaring ballad ‘Rise Above,’ that Spider-Man first appears. As distinctly Edge-like guitars chime, dancers costumed as the superhero leap about like giddy children discovering a new trick. At such moments, Spider-Man doesn’t need technology or gadgetry to take flight.” — Elysa Gardner, USA Today The Performances “In the title role Reeve Carney is an appropriately nonthreatening crush object for tweens, an appealingly agitated Everydweeb with great cheekbones and a sanitized, lite version of a concert rocker’s voice. He is well paired with the wryly sincere Jennifer Damiano (‘Next to Normal’) as Mary Jane Watson, Peter’s girlfriend. Ms. Carpio’s Arachne (now a beneficent fairy godmother rather than an erotically troubling dream spider) provides the most arresting vocal moments with her ululating nasality. Michael Mulheren is suitably blustery and fatuous as the pandering newspaper editor J. Jonah Jameson. And Patrick Page, as the megalomaniacal scientist who becomes the evil mutant called the Green Goblin, provides the one reason for adults unaccompanied by minors to see the show.” —Ben Brantley, The New York Times The Action “[T]here are plenty of breathtaking moments, beginning with the opening scene in which Peter gives a class presentation on the myth of the spider goddess Arachne, played by T.V. Carpio in a role that was reduced by at least half in the new production. As Peter narrates the story of Arachne’s legendary weaving skills, six actresses hang across the stage on massive gold ribbon swings, swaying up and downstage as horizontal ribbons fall, creating a striking human loom. During the climactic fight scene atop the Chrysler Building, the set is built from a roof’s-eye perspective, with a hypnotic view straight down the skyscraper’s side to the cab-lined street far below.” — Evie Nagy, Rolling Stone The Final Word ” ‘Spider-Man’ threatened to go down in history as one of Broadway’s biggest flops. While it probably won’t become one of the street’s greatest smashes, it’s now a fun family show that will entertain fans of both superheroes and showstoppers. Was it worth the wait? For this combination fanboy and show queen, definitely.” — David Sheward, Back Stage For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
