‘Awkward.’ Star Ashley Rickards Flees Cops, On ‘When I Was 17’

MTV actress recalls hilariously mistaking police car’s flashing lights for brake lights on Saturday’s episode. By Lauren Kearney Ashley Rickards as Jenna in “Awkward.” Ashley Rickards, the star of MTV’s “Awkward.,” can probably sympathize with her character, Jenna, whose many FML moments include having her classmates mistake an accident for a failed suicide attempt. On Saturday’s episode of “When I Was 17,” she recalls a hilarious run-in with the law that sounds like it was ripped from the comedy series. “I was driving around my neighborhood … stop at the stop sign and there’s a cop behind me and his brake lights went on,” Ashley remembers in the episode airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT. “It was a stop sign — the brake lights are going to go on. “So I keep going down the road; half a mile … a mile. Then all of a sudden, the sirens go off,” she says. While most people would agree that the blaring of a police car siren is quite possibly one of the most terrifying sounds on the planet, the suddenly panicked Ashley was sure she hadn’t done anything wrong. “So I pull over and he says, ‘Do you realize I’ve been trying to pull you over for the past mile?’ I’m like, ‘No I just heard the sirens now.’ And he was like, ‘I didn’t have the sirens on. I was flashing my lights.’ I felt like such an idiot,” she laughs. “She didn’t understand that the red on the top lights were different than the brake lights,” Lisa, Ashley’s mom, explains. But the “Awkward.” star still swears to this day that there were no blue lights flashing, just “exclusively the red ones.” Honest mistake, Ashley. Brake lights can totally be on the top of a car too, right? Or something? “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and Ashley Rickards — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. A “Lil Positivity”: Ambassador Susan Rice Speaks To Young Women’s Leadership School In Harlem

Ambassador Susan Rice, the U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, marked the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day on March 8 in East Harlem, New York. There she urged tomorrow’s strong woman leaders, the 11th- and 12th-grade classes of The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of East Harlem, to continue to win their future through education. Ambassador Susan Rice speaks to roughly 120 students and staff from The Young Women’s Leadership School of East Harlem on March 8, 2011 These young women, primarily low-income students of color, have a remarkable legacy to uphold: for ten straight years, every single senior at TYWLS of East Harlem has been accepted to college with significant financial aid. Ambassador Rice spoke to roughly 120 students and teachers who gathered in the school’s multi-purpose gymnasium on 106th Street. “There is no greater source of empowerment and success,” she said, “than to have, and to insist upon getting the best education.” After the event, Ambassador Rice met and snapped photographs with Jo’Nella Queen Ellerbe, Marjana Chowdhury, and Tiara Kittrell, seniors who have been accepted to prestigious universities and who delivered introductory and closing remarks on Tuesday. Together with their classmates, these young women carry on with their “most important asset,” as Ambassador Rice called it: “the education that you are getting, and the education that you will continue to get when you leave this great school.” Source

Mississippi school stages a fake prom to trick lesbian

Recently Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School canceled prom because Constance McMillen, a lesbian who wanted to dress in a tux and attend it with her girlfriend. To make up for it's negative publicity the town threw two proms and invited Constance, 2 two learning disabled kids to the fake prom with 5 attendees, while the real prom rocked on other side of town. Article below: Constance McMillen just wanted what teenage girls have dreamed about since time immemorial — to go to the prom with the person she's dating. In McMillen's case, that person happens to be another girl. But the possibility of some same-sex jamming to “I Gotta Feeling” didn't sit too well with the folks at Mississippi's Itawamba Agricultural High School. Reasoning that no prom was better than a prom with lesbians, they abruptly canceled the whole affair last month. Cue media frenzy, ACLU lawsuit, Facebook uproar. After an embarrassing glare of attention on Itawamba, it seemed a happy ending was in sight. Last Tuesday, the school agreed to host an off-campus prom and told Constance she could, per her stated intention, bring her date and wear a tux. On Friday night, McMillen and her girlfriend showed up at the Fulton Country Club ready to party. There, she says, she found just seven other revelers, including two learning disabled students. Worse, she claims that her classmates were off doing the Macarena at an alternate event, arranged with the aid and consent of the parents and staff of her school. Speaking to the Advocate this week, McMillen said, “They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them … everyone went to the other one I wasn't invited to.” Link to full story: http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/2010/04/06/constance_mcmillen_fake_prom/ added by: navider

Cheryl Burke’s Shitty Prom Dress of the Day

Cheryl Burke looks like the kind of girl who went to prom alone, or who skipped out on prom all together because she was too busy being the fat girl eating a bag of Oreos and Ice Cream with no friends and no date. You know, before she found dance, and the community that encouraged her to go bigger and try harder becuase it finally felt like she had friends and people who cared about her, she felt like she belonged and that new confidence came her whole eagerness to take her shit to Hollywood and make millions doing what she is most passionate about and what saved her from suicide, instead of being a drug addicted stripper, but these pictures make it safe to say she hasn’t fully recovered from the scars left from Highschool…..
