Coachella: All the Celebrity Sightings!

From A-listers to reality TV stars, Coachella drew quite the crowd this weekend. With 150 musical acts set to perform, every single ticket available for the show – including the VIP tickets at $5,000 a piece – sold out in under three hours. Guess who snagged those VIP tickets? Some very favorite famous people. Coachella’s celebrity sightings are just about as much of a draw for the music festival as the music itself, and it’s only been one weekend. (Coachella founders/producers spread the event over two April weekends this year, so we’ll have another round coming up soon.) Selena Gomez and Paris Hilton snapped selfies with fans, while Katy Perry called selfies a disease and opted, at first, not to take a photo. She later relented and all was well in the desert. It was especially well for possibly reunited Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie who stepped out together sans toddler Luca.  Other stars in attendance included Jared Leto who arrived and departed by helicopter so that he could make his date with the MTV Movie Awards last night and Leonardo DiCaprio who danced to MGMT . While many flocked to the concert series to see the newly reunited OutKast perform on the mainstage, those trying to catch a glimpse of Lorde and Pharrell Williams weren’t able to do so unless they got their early and claimed their spot in front of the smaller satellite stages. Justin Bieber, eager to shed his teen idol image, joined Chance the Rapper on stage for an F-bomb riddled performance that might have helped him attract a new audience (but probably not). While figures for the music festival aren’t released, it’s estimated that the 2013 concert raked in over $67 million dollars. With tweaks to this year’s format, the gross for 2014 is expected to be even higher, and given the star power who turned out, that’s not surprising.

Tupac Takes Over The Web Through Hologram-Inspired Memes

By Kara Klenk Tupac’s hologram performance at Coachella 2012 Photo: AV Concepts It’s been a crazy week for Tupac Shakur, who, despite having passed away in 1996, has been all over the news after his hologram performance at Coachella. The intriguing yet creepy display has sparked plenty of debate and questions about the future of touring and whether holograms disrespect the memory of late music legends. Never one to miss a viral joke opportunity, the Internet has scooped up Holo-Pac and run with it, resulting in Holo-Pac memes spreading to the far corners of the web. Trailing the success of other parody accounts such as @AngiesRightLeg and @DarthVader, the Twittersphere welcomed @HologramTupac this week, which impressively garnered more than 30,000 followers in only a few days. @HologramTupac tweets at celebrities and fans alike, often pausing to clarify that he is not a zombie, which apparently has been a point of confusion for some. Animated GIFs have been popping up everywhere, animating the Shakur hologram into classic movies like Harry Potter , Star Wars, and Titanic . Even more still photos have been Photoshopped to turn Holo-Pac into a member of the Starship Enterprise or, fittingly, of Jem’s backup band the Holograms . Others have taken the meme past the rapper and come up with dream lineups of other deceased stars. A parody Coachella lineup featuring solely hologram acts boasts headliners like Michael Jackson, The Clash and Mozart. And just when you thought they’d thought of everything, you discover an animated GIF of Tupac as the popular “Haters Gonna Hate” meme. That’s right. It’s a meme of a meme! By Gil Kaufman 2Pac hologram at Coachella Photo: Getty Images The Coachella festival is a place where minds routinely get blown, usually due to an awesome set or a killer reunion from one of your favorite bands. But on Sunday night it was thanks to the ghostly re-appearance of West Coast rap legend Tupac Shakur . He materialized on stage alongside his old friend Snoop Dogg during a crowd-pleasing set by the Doggfather and Dr. Dre, which also featured appearances from Eminem, 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa and Warren G . The resurrection of ‘Pac , who was murdered in 1996, would have been a face-melting surprise had word about the stunt not leaked out just a few days before the set. But the 100,000 or so fans who were on hand still couldn’t believe it when Tupac materialized on stage to rip off “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted.” “What up, Coachella?” the shirtless, pants sagging MC asked the crowd before bouncing into the classic single “Hail Mary.” “We worked with Dr. Dre on this and it was Dre’s vision to bring this back to life,” said Nick Smith, president of AV Concepts, the San Diego company that created the hologram. “It was his idea from the very beginning and we worked with him and his camp to utilize the technology to make it come to life.” Smith said he wasn’t allowed to talk about the creative aspects of the production — including how the hologram was able to seemingly perform the set in synch with Snoop and whether all the vocals were ‘Pac’s — but he did say that his company has the ability to recreate long-dead figures and visually recreate them in the studio. “You can take their likenesses and voice and … take people that haven’t done concerts before or perform music they haven’t sung and digitally recreate it,” he said. The hologram was the latest visual magic pulled off by AV, which is also behind the 2005 Grammys performance featuring Madonna and the holographic members of the Gorillaz, as well as holograms used in concert by Celine Dion and the Black Eyed Peas. The Tupac hologram was several months in the planning and took nearly four months to create in a studio and though Smith was not able to reveal the exact price tag for the illusion, he said a comparable one could cost anywhere from $100,000 to more than $400,000 to pull off. “I can’t say how much that event cost, but I can say it’s affordable in the sense that if we had to bring entertainers around world and create concerts across the country, we could put [artists] in every venue in the country,” he said. The life-size Tupac was amazingly life-like, down to the late rapper’s signature tattoos, Timberland boots, jewelry and movements, all of which were also recreated under the direction of Dre. The hologram, of course, already has a Twitter page and more than 3,300 followers at press time. A spokesperson for Dr. Dre could not be reached for additional comment at press time. DiMeglio Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg perform at Coachella Photo: Getty Images INDIO, California — Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg wowed Coachella’s final night Sunday with a roster of guests way beyond what even the rumors could have predicted. Backed by a live band and unexpectedly artsy video screens, no less than Eminem, 50 Cent, Warren G and a hologram of Tupac graced the stage. As if that wasn’t enough, Wiz Khalifa also joined the West Coast hip-hop legends for the anthem of the weekend, “Young, Wild and Free,” which had the crowd singing the chorus in unison: “So what we get drunk/ So what we smoke w—/ We’re just having fun/ We don’t care who sees/ So what we go out/ That’s how it’s supposed to be/ Living young and wild and free.” Kendrick Lamar — who performed an afternoon set on the main stage Friday — also joined the pair for “The Recipe,” his new joint featuring Dre, who introduced him as “straight outta Compton.” After their own “The Next Episode” and “Deep Cover (187 on an Undercover Cop),” Dre and Snoop covered House of Pain’s “Jump Around.” The hardest moment of the night came when 50 Cent stormed the stage for “What Up Gangsta” with Tony Yayo by his side, seguing into “P.I.M.P.” with tropical calypso steel drums and his 2003 breakthrough hit, “In da Club.” Snoop paid homage to his late homey Nate Dogg, performing “Ain’t No Fun” alongside Kurupt and Warren G as the screens displayed photos of Nate, Snoop and the rest of the Dogg Pound. The appearance of the late Tupac in very-realistic hologram form, which was amazing to some and creepy to others, brought “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerika’z Most Wanted.” Eminem even came out for “I Need a Doctor,” a dubstep-flavored “Forgot About Dre” and “Til I Collapse.” Capping their historic set with “What’s My Name?” and “Still D.R.E.,” Dre and Snoop disappeared below the stage with the Good Doctor proclaiming to the adoring audience, “I wanna say thank you for the love for so many years.” Sunday’s surprise guests didn’t stop there though, as Rihanna joined Calvin Harris for her latest single, “Where Have You Been,” and “We Found Love,” and Rage Against the Machine spitter Zack de la Rocha lent his lyrics to DJ Shadow. Earlier in the night, the main stage was handled by French electronic duo Justice and the much-anticipated At the Drive-In reunion. The influential post-hardcore band had heads banging to “Pattern Against User,” “Lopsided,” “Enfilade” and slowed it down a bit with the melodic “Napoleon Solo.” Elsewhere, the Sahara dance tent hosted Avicii, the Weeknd grooved a huge crowd at the Outdoor Stage as he sang the sun down with his soulful jams, and Florence and the Machine had the ladies lifted with the frontwoman’s request that the “strong gentleman in the house” offer their shoulders for “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up).” In response to last year’s event selling out — a week after the 2011 lineup was announced — the festival is experimenting with featuring the same artists for two consecutive three-day weekends: April 13-15 and April 20-22. At Coachella’s uncharacteristically cold and glooming first day Friday , the Black Keys and Swedish House Mafia kept fans warm. Saturday brought Radiohead, Bon Iver and David Guetta with Usher. Lauryn Hill Announces More Moving Target Tour Dates

By James Dinh Lauryn Hill After wrapping up her first outing in years, Lauryn Hill is keeping her comeback momentum going strong by announcing the second leg of her tour, Moving Target: Extended Intimate Playdate Series. Beginning Wednesday, the former Fugees frontwoman will kick off the 12-date outing in Florida before making her way to the West Coast, then wrapping up in May at the New Orleans jazz festival. More dates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. Like the first leg of the tour, Hill is making sure to visit smaller venues to give fans a more intimate experience. “One of the benefits of playing venues smaller than the ones I’m used to allows me the opportunity to not only reconnect with my supporters but to expose them to a portion of the musical journey I’ve been on which the world for the most part has not had access to,” the 35-year-old singer said in a statement. “I’ve never shied away from being musically adventurous, nor am I known for being a lightweight when it comes to lyrical content or musical exploration.” The elusive singer/rapper also opened up about her hiatus from the big stage, admitting that she’s still in the process of regaining all of her performance skills. “Getting back out there to perform is a lot like resuming a strenuous sport after having been away from it for a while, but eventually the muscle memory kicks in, and each day brings progressive strength. It’s an exciting and real process which these audiences will get to witness,” she continued. While Hill has remained shy of press in recent years, the iconic MC has launched a Twitter account to keep fans updated on the latest news and updates for the tour. Alexander Skarsgaard Restrained by Police, Definitely Dating Kate Bosworth

Alexander Skarsgaard proved a few things at Saturday’s Coachella Music Festival: He’s hot. He’s chivalrous. He’s totally dating Kate Bosworth. The True Blood star was actually restrained by police at the event, after he took action against a photographer that was taking shots of him and Bosworth. The two have been a rumored item since October 2009. Eventually, Skarsgard was calmed down by an officer before the situation escalated. No arrests were made. Earlier in the evening, witnesses spotted Skarsgard giving Bosworth a ride on his shoulders. Later that night, we’re guessing she returned the favor with a ride of a different kind!
