Gulf Spill Well is Officially "Dead", Obama Admin Says

Photo via Physorg And it’s about time. Over the weekend, the federal government finally deemed the Macondo 252 well, which had erupted after an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig , to be “effectively dead”. Thad Allen, the ex-Coast Guard Rear Admiral who had overseen the spill response during the disaster, made the official statement yesterday. He said that the well now poses “no continuing threat to the Gulf of Mexico,” according to the New York Times. Can that be true?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mysterious empty yacht washes up on Florida beach – CNN.com

http://usahitman.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/70-Dubai-beached-3.jpg The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a possible missing boater after an empty yacht mysteriously washed ashore near Madeira Beach in Florida. The search was suspended Wednesday night, Coast Guard officials said. The empty 48-foot boat washed up on the beach about 1 p.m. Wednesday, triggering a police investigation and a Coast Guard rescue mission. The Coast Guard sent out two rescue vessels and a helicopter but was not able to locate anybody. Adding to the mystery is the fact that the vessel is registered to the federal government, CNN-affiliate WFTS reported. Also when the ship came ashore the engine was still running and lights were on, witnesses told the affiliate. The sight shocked some. “We do not see something like this often. I have lived here since 1958 I have never seen a boat this size beached like this,” Rob Klingel told the affiliate. Danita Gainey who lives in Redington Beach which is near Madeira Beach, said the sight gave her a bad feeling. “I do not know what to say. I can't explain it. I don't want to say anything bad. It's hard to say anything good when you see something like that,” Gainey said. Deputies from the Pinellas County Sheriff's office are investigating the incident and trying to track down the owner of the boat. added by: toyotabedzrock

Journalists Covering BP Spill Now Face Felonies, $40K Fines

There will certainly be no more of this — A journalist diving into the Gulf spill. Photo via AL There’s been much discussion over how BP has been obstructing media coverage of the Gulf spill, and rightly so. Thus far, impediments to coverage have involved the Coast Guard cooperating with BP to turn reporters away, and simply barring journalists’ access from certain impacted areas. But now, reports are surfacing that journalists are no longer just facing the prospect of being turned away — a new rule imposed by the US Coast Guard means that they’re now facing felony charges and fines of tens of… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Massive MZ-3A Blimp Expected to Arrive in the Gulf Coast to Help Track Oil Slick

Blimp expected to arrive to help track oil slick By the CNN Wire Staff July 6, 2010 3:44 a.m. EDT New Orleans, Louisiana (CNN) — A massive, silver-colored blimp is expected to arrive in the Gulf Coast on Tuesday to aid in oil disaster response efforts. The U.S. Navy airship will be used to detect oil, direct skimming ships and look for wildlife that may be threatened by oil, the Coast Guard said Monday. The 178-foot-long blimp, known as the MZ-3A, can carry a crew of up to 10. It will fly slowly over the region to track where the oil is flowing and how it is coming ashore. The Navy says the advantage of the blimp over current helicopter surveillance operations is that it can stay aloft longer, with lower fuel costs, and can survey a wider area. The Coast Guard has already been pinpointing traveling pools of oil from the sky. “The aircraft get on top of the oil. They can identify what type of oil it is and they can vector in the skimmer vessels right to the spot,” Coast Guard Capt. Brian Kelley said. But the problem since last Wednesday has been the ability to clean it up before it approaches land. Rough seas have hampered cleanup efforts and tests by the boat billed as the world's largest skimmer. Tests of A Whale's ability so far are “inconclusive,” meaning the massive converted oil tanker–which is 3.5 football fields long — has yet to prove its Taiwanese owner's claim that it can skim between 15,000 and 50,000 barrels of oil off the sea in a day. So far, crude oil floating in the sea has not been concentrated enough for A Whale to skim effectively, according to oil company BP, even though it appears the ship has been surrounded by pools of oil just a few miles from the gusher. “We've got oil coming up from over a mile below the surface. And it doesn't always come up in one spot. It's not always predictable. So, in fact, we need to locate the oil first, and then assign the ship to the areas of heaviest concentration,” BP spokesman Hank Garcia said. Bad weather has hindered cleanup efforts, he said. “When you've got 6-foot, 8-foot seas, it's not going to lend itself to good capture of the oil.” On Monday, authorities said tar balls linked to the crude gushing from BP's ruptured deepwater well had reached into Louisiana's Lake Pontchartrain and hit the beaches near Galveston, Texas. The Coast Guard reported over the weekend that a shift in weather patterns could send more oil toward sensitive shores in Mississippi and Louisiana, and bad weather over the past few days has significantly hampered cleanup efforts. Anne Rheams, executive director of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation, said Monday that the pattern was expected to persist for at least three more days. The National Hurricane Center said early Tuesday morning that a low-pressure area located near the Louisiana coast was producing a few showers and thunderstorms, but was not likely to develop into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. Federal estimates say between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels (about 1.5 million to 2.5 million gallons) of oil have been gushing into the Gulf daily since April 22, when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig sank in the Gulf, two days after it exploded in flames. The accident left 11 workers dead and uncorked an undersea gusher that BP has been unable to cap for 11weeks. CNN's Allan Chernoff contributed to this report. added by: EthicalVegan

MSM Wall Protecting Obama Gulf Oil Spill Response Cracks With Latest AP Report

Perhaps it is frustration, as expressed by Anderson Cooper , with the new White House rules inhibiting reports about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill that is now causing a big crack in the Mainstream Media wall which until recently mostly avoided direct criticism of the Obama administration response. However that crack has now turned into a flood of surprising criticism coming from formerly friendly outlets such as the Associated Press. Read this amazing AP report and keep in mind that it is no longer just conservative sources that are harsh in their criticisms of the Obama Gulf oil containment efforts: NEW ORLEANS — BP and the Obama administration face mounting complaints that they are ignoring foreign offers of equipment and making little use of the fishing boats and volunteers available to help clean up what may now be the biggest spill ever in the Gulf of Mexico. The Coast Guard said there have been 107 offers of help from 44 nations, ranging from technical advice to skimmer boats and booms. But many of those offers are weeks old, and only a small number have been accepted. The vast majority are still under review, according to a list kept by the State Department. Ouch! But the criticism of the poor reponse of the Obama administration response to this crises becomes even more heated: A report prepared by investigators with the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., detailed one case in which the Dutch government offered April 30 to provide four oil skimmers that collectively could process more than 6 million gallons of oily water a day. It took seven weeks for the U.S. to approve the offer. Even the credibility of the Coast Guard is being called into question: Billy Nungesser, president of Louisiana’s hard-hit Plaquemines Parish, said BP and the Coast Guard provided a map of the exact locations of 140 skimmers that were supposedly cleaning up the oil. But he said that after he repeatedly asked to be flown over the area so he could see them at work, officials told him only 31 skimmers were on the job. Something seems to have shifted dramatically in the past few days in MSM coverage of this crises.  And was this the reason for the “transparent” Obama administration attempting to inhibit coverage of the Gulf oil spill?
