Ireland Racist Incidents Up 85% In 2013 85% sure is a large increase ! According to Irish Times: An 85 per cent increase in racist incidents this year has been reported by the Immigrant Council of Ireland. The council said 142 incidents had been reported since January, compared to 77 during the same period last year. Reports peaked over the summer months, with 31 incidents in July alone. Most cases occurred in a person’s local community or workplace, while harassment, both verbal and written, accounted for most instances of racism. ICI chief executive Denise Charlton said the figures were “alarming and once again show racism is a reality which people and families are facing in their communities”. She added: “While the findings are preliminary and we will produce more details in the new year, they are nevertheless stark. People have been made victims in their own homes, at work, on the street and increasingly online.” Racism is just getting worse, even abroad. SMH.
About three weeks after being diagnosed with breast cancer , Amy Robach posted an open letter to fans on the Good Morning America website yesterday. The reporter unfortunately said physicians have found a second malignancy, but added that her “prognosis is good” and she remains in positive spirits overall. “Physically and emotionally I have been through the ringer, but I am emerging on the other side so much stronger. I have a greater appreciation for life, for health and for how such simple acts of kindness can be so incredibly powerful,” the 40-year-old wrote. “I am looking through a different lens now…and I am thankful for that as well. There was my life before October 30th and now my life after.” Robach, the wife of actor Andrew Shue, actually found out about the lump in her breast via an ABC-sponsored mammogram and hopes to return to work on December 2. “My cancer had spread to my sentinel lymph node, but not beyond, so I will have more treatments ahead of me, but none that will take me out of work,” she says. Amy then concluded her note with a message to supporters. “I couldn’t be more excited to get back to work,” she wrote. “Your support and love has made this all an experience that has given me the strength to fight the fear and hopefully help others do the same in the days/weeks/years to come!” We wish Robach nothing but the best.
Kim Kardashian is doing her part to help those affected by last week’s deadly typhoon in the Philippines . Her pretty small part, that is. The reality star announced on her blog Thursday that she’s auctioning off clothing on eBay , with the money raised being sent to a charity that benefits those in this ravaged area. Kim Kardashian Auctioning Off Clothes For Charity A very good idea and a very good cause, right? Absolutely. “The proceeds will go directly to the communities they’re serving in the Philippines and will help typhoon survivors get access to medical care and ultimately save lives,” Kardashian writes on her Celebuzz blog. But Kim fails to mention the fine print on the auction pages: only 10 percent of the final sales price will go to the International Medical Corps. A whole 10 percent. “My prayers and thoughts are with those affected by the typhoon. Check out my eBay auction and support those who need out help in the Philippines.” While her clothes will certainly yield a lot of money and even 10 percent of that is better than nothing, somehow it seems like a wasted opportunity to do more. To learn more about the International Medical Corps, visit internationalmedicalcorps.org. You may find that you wish to simply give directly to that charity instead of lining Kim’s pockets with 90 percent of your purchase from her auction. Really. Hasn’t she made enough off the Kim Kardashian sex tape already?

Do tell… Polls Show That Blacks Are More In Favor Of Gay Marriage According to Christian Post Recent polls show increasing support for same-sex marriage among blacks. A national exit poll by Edison Research shows that black voters favored their state legalizing gay marriage, 51 to 41 percent. Pew polls have also showed an increase from 36 percent in 2011 to 44 percent last month supporting gay marriage. According to the exit poll conducted by Edison Research on behalf of the NEP, 51 percent of black voters said their states should legally recognize same-sex marriage, compared with 47 percent of whites who favored this idea. It’s a big shift considering that in 2011, the Pew Research Center found that only 36 percent of blacks favored legalizing gay marriage, compared with 49 percent of whites supporting it. A Pew survey found last month that long-standing racial differences in attitudes toward gay marriage were narrowing. Consistently over the past decade, blacks have been far less supportive of legalizing gay marriage than whites. But the latest survey found blacks divided more evenly on this issue than in the past, with 44 percent in favor and 39 percent opposed to allowing gay marriage. Among whites, 49 percent favored and 41 percent opposed same-sex marriage. Says the NAACP: The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation’s oldest African-American civil rights group, voted in May to support a resolution endorsing same-sex marriage at its board meeting in Miami, Fla. “The mission of the NAACP has always been to ensure political, social and economic equality of all people,” Roslyn M. Brock, chairman of the Board of Directors of the NAACP, said in a statement. “We have and will oppose efforts to codify discrimination into law.” Benjamin Todd Jealous, president and CEO of the NAACP, said in a statement, “Civil marriage is a civil right and a matter of civil law. The NAACP’s support for marriage equality is deeply rooted in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution and equal protection of all people. The well-funded right wing organizations who are attempting to split our communities are no friend to civil rights, and they will not succeed.” Pow! Sounds like the Association is down to make sure that Michael and Matthew can get married and divorced like everyone else in the country. Do YOU support gay marriage? Why or why not?
