‘Lone Ranger’ Is ‘Built Around Tonto,’ Director Says

‘You’ve heard the Lone Ranger’s story; you just haven’t heard it from this guy,’ Gore Verbinski tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Gore Verbinski Photo: MTV News Now that Disney, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp have ironed out most of the budget kinks surrounding their production of ” The Lone Ranger ,” we can all rest easy that the masked man and his trusty sidekick Tonto are headed to the big screen soon. When MTV News caught up with Verbinski at the Hollywood Awards Gala last night, where his quirky animated film “Rango” received the Hollywood Animation Award, we asked how he was feeling about the film and what his plans are for the adaptation. “I feel great. We’re not shooting a Western in the middle of winter; the whole thing is pushed into a more reasonable time of year, so now we have to go make the movie,” Verbinski said, speaking to the film’s new May 31, 2013, release date. “There’s been a lot of talk. Hopefully in a year and a half we’ll have something we can talk about.” Verbinski went on to say that he’s been hard at work on the screenplay for two years and that the central character is not the Ranger. “It’s all built around Tonto,” he said. “You’ve heard the Lone Ranger’s story; you just haven’t heard it from this guy. He was there.” Depp has already teased that their take on the beloved duo’s western adventures will be “interesting,” to say the least. “I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny,” he said. “But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood. The Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don’t see Tonto that way at all. So it’s an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lady Gaga To Perform At Grammy Nominations Concert

Jason Aldean will also hit the stage when this year’s nominees are announced. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Scott Gries/ Picture Group The Grammy Awards may be months away, but the Recording Academy is already gearing up for the big show. Lady Gaga has been tapped to perform at “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night,” airing next month. She’ll be joined by country star Jason Aldean, who will also perform at the fourth annual event. The show, which takes place November 30 at the Nokia Theatre in L.A., will once again be hosted by LL Cool J. It will air on CBS at 10 p.m. In addition to performances from Aldean, Gaga and others who have yet to be announced, nominees in several of the categories will be announced at the show. The Grammys air live on February 12. This certainly isn’t Gaga’s first time at the Grammy rodeo. She’s won five awards in the past, including trophies for Best Short Form Music Video and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Bad Romance,” as well as Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face” and Best Electronic/Dance Album for her debut album, The Fame. Last year, Gaga made headlines when she appeared on the red carpet in an egg and emerged in yolk-colored clothes to perform “Born This Way.” She previously performed with Elton John in 2010. Aldean has not previously been nominated for any Grammy Awards. While nominees for the show will be announced that night, it should be noted that both Gaga and Aldean are eligible. They both released albums within the timeframe: Gaga with Born This Way and Aldean with My Kinda Party. Who are you rooting for at this year’s Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Lady Gaga Arrives At Grammys In An Egg

Stylist Nicola Formichetti tweets that the singer is in incubation on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga arrives at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images Lady Gaga’s arrival at the 53rd Grammy Awards had the world buzzing quite early on Sunday evening (February 13). The songstress, who premiered her new song “Born This Way” on Friday, hit the Grammys in a semi-see-through egg that seemed like something of an arty reference to that song’s title. Check out pictures of Lady Gaga’s Grammy arrival here. Outdoing the space-age Armani Prive getup she wore to last year’s Grammys, Gaga was in the egg as she emerged from a truck and was carried by four men in yellow boxers and dresses to the carpet. Her Twitter page gave a bit of insight into what Gaga might be up to on Sunday. “This is Nicola, Haus of Gaga: Gaga is in incubation,” stylist Nicola Formichetti tweeted on the singer’s page. “Tonight’s performance is in collaboration with Hussein Chalayan and House of Mugler. X” Formichetti also wrote about Gaga’s big arrival on his own Twitter account. “Grammys red carpet,” he tweeted. “Lady gaga wears Mugler by nicola formichetti . Womb by hussein Chalayan. Gaga’s pryers are in haus of gaga in collaboration with Mugler. My baby is been born.” Lady Gaga is set to perform her new song live during the Grammy telecast. The singer is up for six awards on Sunday night including Album of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Dance Recording and Best Short Form Music Video. Will Lady Gaga Perform At The Grammy Awards?

Gaga’s choreographer sends tweets suggesting that singer will take the stage at February 13 show. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Florian Seefried/ Getty Images Could Lady Gaga be performing at the Grammy Awards? Well, if Laurieann Gibson’s tweets are to be believed, the answer could be yes. Gaga’s choreographer may have spilled the beans about a possible performance via her Twitter account on Tuesday. “Grammy meeting performance [extraordinaire]!!! On its way… TeamBoomkack,” she wrote . She followed up the tweet with a “yes” when a fan inquired if that was a hint that the Born This Way singer would be taking the stage at the big show on February 13. She also retweeted a fan’s comment expressing excitement about what Gaga and Gibson have in store for the performance. Other than Gibson’s tweets, no confirmation from Gaga or the Grammy team has been made, but the Grammy Awards do land on the same day that Gaga planned to release the first single off her May album, lending some credence to the speculation that she may take the stage at the big show. This year Gaga is up for six awards , including Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Female Pop Performance and Best Short Form Music Video for “Bad Romance,” Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for “Telephone,” her track with Beyonc

Lady Gaga’s Grammy Snub Prompts Rule Change

The Recording Academy will allow previous nominees to be eligible for Best New Artist. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Kristian Dowling/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s wildly successful entry into the music scene actually hampered her chances of scoring a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist this year because of the Recording Academy’s previous eligibility guidelines. Although Gaga had a major 2009, following the chart-topping success of her debut album The Fame , her earlier nod for Best Dance Recording for “Just Dance” barred the star from being considered for Best New Artist at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. In light of the Gaga situation, the Recording Academy has announced that artists who have received previous nominations may still be eligible for the Best New Artist trophy. “If an artist/group is nominated (but does not win) for the release of a single or as a featured artist or collaborator on a compilation or other artist’s album before the artist/group has released an entire album (and becomes eligible in this category for the first time), the artist/group may enter this category in the eligibility year during which his/her/their first album is released,” the academy said in a statement . The academy also acknowledged that the changes reflect the fact that many artists appear as featured guests on hit singles before releasing a full-length debut. “More and more, the first release of a new artist is as a featured artist on someone else’s album, or the new artist may release a single long before the release of his/her/their entire first album. By current rules, if the other artist’s album or the new artist’s single receives a nomination, the new artist may never have the opportunity to compete in the Best New Artist category,” the statement continued. “With this change, each artist will have at least one opportunity to enter in this important and highly visible category.” According to The Associated Press , academy President Neil Portnow acknowledged that the Gaga oversight was a factor in changing the eligibility requirements. “There will be some changes so that particular situation won’t repeat itself,” Portnow said. The changes will immediately go into effect and will be reflected in the nominations for the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2011. Akon Says He Can Retire, Thanks To Lady Gaga

‘She was definitely a blessing. She came at the right moment,’ singer/producer says of signing the superstar to a record deal. By Hillary Crosley Akon and Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Akon is releasing a new album this year, but the singer seems more excited about his Kon Live imprint artist Lady Gaga’s success than his own. “She’s pretty much retired me,” Akon told The Associated Press . “She was definitely a blessing. She came at the right moment. I’m glad I believed in her, boy. That goes to show you, if you believe in something strong enough, it will pay off.” Lady Gaga was initially signed to Def Jam Records, where she was dropped several months later. Then Akon signed her as a free agent as he was finalizing his Kon Live deal with Interscope Records and label head Jimmy Iovine. Fast-forward a few years and Lady Gaga has become an internationally known pop star, winning two awards at the 2010 Grammys : Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face” and Best Electronic/Dance Album for The Fame. The singer recently swept the Brit Awards in London, where she performed a tribute to recently deceased designer Alexander McQueen and walked away with three awards. “She just blossomed into a super megastar,” said Akon. As for his own upcoming album, Akon says that in addition to Lady Gaga, he’s also working with Dutch dance DJ/producer Chuckie, DJ David Guetta, who recently collaborated with Akon on “Sexy Bitch,” and hip-hop heavyweight Dr. Dre. “You’ve got some straight hard-core hip-hop guys actually moving into the dance realm,” Akon said. “And that’s shocking. When you’ve got someone like Dr. Dre about to do a dance record … that’s crazy.” Akon didn’t divulge much about the Dr. Dre collaboration, except to say the record “actually sounds great. He played it for me. I was shocked. So I was like, ‘Wow, that’s dope. When the world hears this, they might go crazy.’ … When you’ve got the two worlds mixed together, clashing, it’s going to be a monster.” Akon’s as-yet-untitled forthcoming CD is slated to hit shelves toward the end of 2010.
