Zooey Deschanel covers the February issue of Glamour magazine. In it, our perennial crush laments how skinny many Hollywood actresses have become. “Actresses have definitely gotten thinner over the course of my lifetime,” she says. “Women I admired growing up – Debra Winger, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep – were beautiful and thin, but not too thin. There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny.” “Much, much too skinny. You can’t Pilates to that. I’m a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I’d look like them; it’s scary. For young girls, what does that say?” “You need to look this way to be successful? That’s not true.” “You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what’s acceptable is a lot larger than what people believe.” Sounds like someone would approve of a too-skinny model ban . As far as the 32-year-old’s own image is concerned? “It’s just about doing what you like so that when you look at yourself, you’re not disgusted. And I’m all about unintentional. I’m not a calculated person.” “I’m just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say. We can’t be feminine and be feminists and be successful?” “I want to be a f–king feminist and wear a f–king Peter Pan collar. So f–king what?” File that under New Girl quotes we’d love to hear on her show somehow. Then check out more great Zooey Deschanel photos below!
Actress tells MTV News hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’ ‘will definitely be a highlight of my life.’ By John Mitchell, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zooey Deschanel Photo: MTV News Zooey Deschanel will get to scratch off one more item from her bucket list when she takes the stage to host this weekend’s “Saturday Night Live” with musical guest Karmin. The Golden Globe-nominated star of Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl” is a longtime fan of the legendary sketch comedy show and remembers watching Mike Myers and Dana Carvey create classic characters when she was a kid. “I think the cast is so strong right now,” Deschanel told MTV News. “It’s really great to be here right now.” Indeed, her regard for the cast is so great she wouldn’t reveal her favorites, insisting she couldn’t wait to hit the famed Studio 8H stage at 30 Rock with each and every member of the current “SNL” team. “This will definitely be a highlight of my life,” she said. “For sure, the bucket list.” With booking “SNL” scratched off her to-do list, the actress can focus on the business of hosting the show, which includes a lot more work than what you see on camera. “They ask you if there’s anything you’d like to do, if there’re any impressions you can do, and, you know, characters — sort of talk about stuff you’re capable of doing,” Deschanel says of the “SNL” writing team, who take all that info and, in an all-night writing session, churn out the first draft of the script. “Once you do the read-through is sort of when you can see what’s working and not,” she said. “But it’s not really until you read it out loud that you really know.” And she can’t wait to break out some of the impressions she’s been working on in the lead-up to Saturday night. “I’m an actor and that’s one of the things you do,” Deschanel said. Are you planning to check out Zooey on “Saturday Night Live”? Let us know in the comments below!
MTV News walks you through the garbled dialogue and intricate plot of the Batman teaser. By Kevin P. Sullivan Bane in “Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Even two weeks after “The Dark Knight Rises” prologue debuted before select IMAX showings of “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” everyone who saw it can’t seem to stop talking about Bane and what he says — or at least what people thought he said. Ever since the preview’s premiere, there has been talk of tweaking audio levels and lowering background noise in order to make Bane more intelligible. Just Tuesday, a rumor circulated that Warner Bros. had provided IMAX projectionists with an adjusted soundtrack for the prologue . Warner Bros. denied the claim, but talk of changes persists. If you’ve already seen the prologue, adjusting audio levels now won’t help you until the July release of the finished film, so we’ve gone over the footage and decoded each story element and every line of Bane’s dialogue for you. ( Major spoilers ahead! ) The Setup Most of the confusion about what’s going on starts before we even see Bane. We jump right into the story without much explanation of what’s going on. “Leaked” CIA documents, used as part of a viral campaign, fill in some of the blanks. Dr. Pavel, a missing Russian nuclear physicist, seeks asylum in the United States with the help of the CIA. Pavel believes he is in immediate danger and goes into hiding. A group of mercenaries find him and negotiate with the CIA to deliver the scientist over to them safely, at the cost of $3 million. The prologue begins with that exchange. Bane The mercenaries bring along three unexpected guests to the party with the CIA. The leader of the soldiers informs the head agent that the men work for Bane. Eager to learn more about the masked man, the CIA agent brings the three men onto the airplane but only promises safe passage to the one who talks the most. Bane then speaks his first line as the agent threatens his men. “Or perhaps he’s wondering why someone would shoot a man before throwing him out of a plane.” Bane and the agent exchange some words, during which we get some background on his character. His mask keeps him from experiencing severe pain caused by a yet-unknown ailment. It also was what made people pay attention to Bane in the first place. “No one cared who I was until I put on the mask.” The Plan From here, we see Bane’s master plan play out. A large plane hooks onto the smaller one flown by the CIA and drags it into a nosedive. There’s a small fight inside, but Bane and his men win handily. They lower a dead body in a bag into the plane and perform a transfusion with Dr. Pavel, so when the wreckage is found, the DNA matches the missing doctor. As the group prepares to exit, Bane informs one of his younger partners in crime that he must stay behind in order to avoid suspicion. When the man asks Bane if they have started a fire, he replies with the now-famous line: “The fire rises.” Pretty straightforward, right? ‘New Girl’ star and Death Cab for Cutie frontman announced their separation in November. By Kara Warner Ben Gibbard and Zooey Deschanel Photo: Getty Images It looks like there is no reconciliation in sight for Zooey Deschanel and Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard. After announcing their separation back in November, the “New Girl” star officially filed for divorce a month later. According to People magazine, Deschanel filed the documents with L.A. County Superior Court on December 27. The papers list their actual date of separation as October 31 and cite “irreconcilable differences” as the reason behind the split. Although Deschanel spoke with the magazine recently, she didn’t have much to say about the end of her relationship with Gibbard but did mention that they will likely remain friends. “We’re friendly,” she told People. “It’s all fine.” Check out a breakup playlist of Death Cab and She & Him songs. Deschanel’s statement reflects a similar sentiment that a source told Us Weekly at the time of their separation: “It was mutual and amicable. There was no third party involved.” Deschanel’s star power has been on the rise over the past few years, particularly after her scene-stealing turn in “(500) Days of Summer” and “Our Idiot Brother,” but more recently since the debut of her critically acclaimed and Golden Globe-nominated new sitcom “The New Girl.” Gibbard has been equally busy with Death Cab for Cutie promoting the release of their seventh studio album, Codes and Keys, which was recently nominated for a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. The couple were introduced by their mutual manager three years ago. They got engaged in 2008 and were married in 2009. They have no children. I don’t care if you’re sick of Zooey Deschanel ‘s adorkable omnipresence, or if you’ve seen 400 videos already of Joseph Gordon-Levitt singing some song or another for his HitRECordJoe community. It’s nigh on the new year and this video of the (500) Days of Summer co-stars dueting Nancy Wilson’s “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?” is just too cute, dammit! Give in to the twanging twee twosome and start planning your midnight kiss. Deschanel’s note, posted with the video to her Hello Giggles website: “I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic , where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since. When we did 500 Days of Summer 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and make up trailer; we had loads of fun. I hope to do a thousand more movies with him because he’s simply the best. But in the meantime, we made a little New Year’s duet for all of you! The original by Nancy Wilson. ENJOY! I wouldn’t normally consider Zooey Deschanel one of Hollywood’s hottest young talents, she’s kind of quirky in that annoying hipster way, but she’s got a new show and she might be on the verge of some sort of breakthrough so I thought I’d give her a chance. Besides, she’s wearing kind of a sexy dress and making a half decent attempt at dropping some cleavage so why not? I think she needs to talk to Paris Hilton and find out where she can get one of those magical bras that make skinny girls busty …. For the good of the show.
Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward act out teenage melodrama with dance and joyous pop. By James Montgomery She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel in their “In the Sun” video Photo: Merge Records On the surface — or any other level — Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward don’t have much in common with the Vanessa Hudgenses and Zac Efrons of the world. And yet, in the brand-new She & Him video (available on Pitchfork.com ), they seem very much to be channeling the spirit of Disney’s “High School Musical” franchise (sadly, Sharpay Evans does not make an appearance). The video for “In the Sun,” the first single off their upcoming Volume Two album (due March 23), is set in a fairly generic high school, has tons of dancing and mimics the Disney movies’ nostalgic tendency to portray teenage melodrama in various choreographed dance sequences. Deschanel plays the clear-eyed heroine, a sweet girl hopelessly in love with the bad boy (M. Ward, who actually looks like he’s enjoying the role) and trying in vain to win his affections. She does this, of course, with a dreamy dance routine full of shoulder shakes and sly winks — patented Deschanel moves, as seen in their video for “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?” — plus hula-hooping and the occasional lift. The fact that both band members are dressed in outfits lifted from the 1950s strangely works here. Teenagers’ hearts are still the same after all these years. There’s a bright, joyous feel to the clip, thanks to the direction of Peyton Reed, who helmed the kinetic “Bring It On” (high school truly is his oeuvre), and the genuine look of thrill Deschanel sports throughout. She delights in each dance step, as if she can’t believe she’s pulling it off. Of course, the song helps matters too. It’s another crackling, sunny bit of retro-pop from a duo who have quickly become the leading progenitors of the stuff. At the end of the video, we’re not sure if Deschanel is any closer to wooing Ward, but at least she had fun trying. The politics of high school should always be this easy. Related Artists She & Him
