S oftball star Natasha Watley is on a mission to empower the youth through sports. According to the Los Angeles Sentinel she has been hosting a youth softball league to provide mentorship for young girls that are from South L.A. Softball Gold Medalist Gives Back with Summer Program #BlackNews #BlackPress #85YearsofLASentinel https://t.co/bjujQ1ZeIx — L.A. Sentinel News (@thelasentinel) June 15, 2019 The Natasha Watley Softball League—which has been in existence for over a decade—is supported by the Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation. Its an 8-week free softball program for girls between the ages of 8 and 15. This year, the initiative is serving 126 girls from underserved communities. The organizers say their mission is to teach girls about leadership and health and inspire them to join the softball teams at their schools. For Watley—a UCLA alum who helped the USA Softball Women’s National Team win a gold medal during the 2004 Olympics—it’s all about representation. She wanted to ensure Black and brown girls were exposed to softball at a young age and hopes to use her program to increase representation within the sport. “We started the league to give opportunities to young girls in LA to learn how to play softball,” Watley said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Most of them, when they start, they’ve never even heard of softball so we’re teaching them the game. Through that we hope that they also learn about teamwork, commitment, and dedication.” There are several efforts being made to diversify softball and baseball. In May, Black College Sports Group 360 launched the HBCU World Series as an avenue to spread awareness about baseball programs at HBCUs and increase racial diversity within the sport. “We want to utilize these events to promote educational opportunities to urban youth who in some cases may not even know schools with the history of a North Carolina A&T State University or a Southern University even exists,” said Black College Sports Group 360 founder Erwin Prentiss Hill . “These oftentimes may be first-generation college prospects. They have good grades and good GPAs. They just do not have an understanding from a previous generation of what it takes to navigate that process.” SEE ALSO: HBCU World Series Aims To Diversify College Baseball Serena Williams Becomes Second Black Woman Tennis Player To Grace Wheaties Box [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3881358″ overlay=”true”]

Jennifer Lopez Shares Proposal Pics, Still Loves Alleged Cheater A-Rod

Jennifer Lopez doesn’t seem to care that Alex Rodriguez may have had multiple women down on their knees in front of him over the past several months. Because the former Major League Baseball player and ongoing alleged cheater got down on one knee himself this past weekend. Indeed, days after  Rodriguez proposed to Lopez and announced to the world that “she said yes,” the singer/actress has shared a few photos from the special moment on her Instagram page. It’s almost as if the whole thing was staged and actually NOT a surprise in any way, shape or form. The beautiful images were snapped during sunset while Rodriguez and Lopez were on vacation in the Bahamas. As you can see above and below, both superstars are dressed impeccably, with Rodriguez hilariously rocking the 2009 World Series ring he won as a member of the New York Yankees. According to online estimates, the diamond presented here is worth around $5 million. “Locking it down. #futuremrsrodriguezthis Rodriguez captioned his Instagram post on Tuesday, which featured these same snapshots. The famous couple began dating on February 3, 2017 and have legitimately seemed very much in love ever since. HOWEVER, shortly after news of their engagement went viral, Jose Canseco took a pretty hard shot at his fellow former steroid user. The polarizing ex-Oakland Athletics slugger stated very plainly on Twitter that Rodriguez was carrying on an affair with Canseco’s ex-wife. “Watching World of Dance watching J.Lo text Alex Rodriguez little does she know that he is cheating on her with my ex-wife Jessica poor girl she has no idea who he really is,” Canseco wrote. He then added: “I was there a few months back with her when he called her on her phone.” Canseco, for whatever it may be worth, was the same person who was maligned way back in the day when he wrote a book in which he claimed tons of Major League Baseball players took performance-enhancing drugs. He turned out to be correct, of course. Elsewhere, a random fitness model named Lauren Hunter told The National Enquirer last year that she was also sleeping with A-Rod during his relationship with Lopez. She complimented Rodriguez on his sexual prowess and penis size and said their affair ended in May of 2017, about three months after he started to give it to J-Lo. “He told me he loved me, and he’s loved me for a long time,” she told the Enquirer. None of these rumors appear to have dampened Rodriguez’s mood, though. Not when, to use his own words, he just locked down one of the world’s most breathtaking human beings. Rodriguez went ahead and opened up about their engagement in his Instagram story on Tuesday. “There aren’t many words to share with you, only feelings. Gratitude. Excitement. And just … joy,” he wrote alongside a photo from the proposal in which he’s kissing Lopez’s forehead. He concluded: “We know there is work to do to keep building a family and future we can be proud of, and we can’t do it without all of you. “We are so thankful for all your messages of love and congratulations.” Do you think Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez will last?

Kate Upton Gives Birth to First Child!

The woman who many consider to be the world’s most perfect looking human just gave birth to an absolute perfect baby. Indeed, congratulations are in order for Kate Upton: The supermodel just gave birth to her very first child! The 26-year old shared the blessed news on Saturday evening, alerting Instagram followers to the name and the gender of her and husband Justin Verlander’s precious offspring. We’ll let Upton take it from here… “Genevieve Upton Verlander. 11.7.18,” Kate simply wrote, confirming that the newborn came into official existence this past Wednesday. She included with this message a gorgeous black-and-white snapshot of little Genevieve… … and here it is! Well done, Kate and Justin. Verlander, who works as one of the best starting pitchers in all of Major League Baseball, posted a photo of the couple holding their little one’s hand. He wrote as a caption: “Welcome to the world Genevieve Upton Verlander. You stole my [heart] the first second I met you!!! 11.7.2018.” Verlander also penned a sweet message to Upton after the couple confirmed her pregnancy in July . “You’re going to be the most amazing Mom!! I can’t wait to start this new journey with you!” he gushed on Instagram at the time, adding: “You’re the most thoughtful, loving, caring, and strong woman I’ve ever met! I’m so proud that our little one is going to be raised in this world by a woman like you! I love you so much.” Upton and Verlander got married the knot in Tuscany, Italy, in November of 2017, mere days after the pitcher and the Houston Astros won the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the baseball season that recently concluded, Verlander credited Upton for turning both his career and his life around. Speaking to Bleacher Report about his outlook after going through multiple injuries, Verlander said the following a few months ago: “Who knows if I’m even here if it wasn’t for her? “I really thought it was the end. … She was instrumental in me not … like, jumping off a bridge.” Wow, huh? And now she’s also been also rather instrumental in Verlander becoming a dad. We send these two our very best wishes.

Derek Jeter and Hannah Davis Welcome First Child!!!!!

Derek Jeter is the most clutch athlete in the history of modern day sports. But he’ll soon be faced with pressure-packed situations that make plate appearances in the World Series seem like relaxing walks in the park. How quickly can he change a dirty diaper?!?  Can he heat up breast milk in efficient fashion?!? Does he have a strong swaddling game?!? These questions are now more pertinent than ever because Jeter is a first-time father! Just a few minutes ago, The Players Tribune, an online publication started by the future Hall of Fame shortstop, posted the following message on Twitter: “Congratulations Derek and @hannahbjeter on the birth of your baby girl, Bella Raine Jeter, born Thursday, August 17.” No word yet on the child’s measurements or the exact time she entered the world, but we’re guessing she did so in dramatic fashion. Just based on the identity of her father. The retired New York Yankees star and the supermodel announced in February that they were expecting a baby girl. “Now, pregnant with our first child, Derek and I are looking to the future,” the model wrote on Jeter’s website . “Whatever her name is, I know she’ll run circles around him. In a post that went viral, she added of her bundle of her impending children: “They’re going to be born into such an extraordinary situation. They’re going to have to be some strong little people. “We don’t want them to be defined by their dad’s name – for them, we want him to just be ‘Dad.’ That will be the piece of him they’ll have that the rest of the world doesn’t. “It will be special, and it will be theirs.” Following this afternoon’s big announcement, the Yankees also took to Twitter to send their well wishes to the new parents, Tweeting: “Congrats to Derek & Hannah Jeter on the birth of their daughter, Bella Raine Jeter. We can’t wait to meet her!” What great timing, too. The Yankees are fresh off a four-game sweep of the New York Mets and start a three-game series against the hated Boston Red Sox tonight. Hannah and Derek can rock their little girl to sleep while seeing if the latter’s former team can give itself a legitimate shot to win the American League East by taking a couple games in this series. Jeter and Davis, it should be noted, began dating in 2012. They tied the knot on a golf course at Meadowood Napa Valley Resort in St. Helena, California, in July of 2016. Yordano Ventura Dead: Kansas City Royals Pitcher Was 25

Sad news today: Yordano Ventura is dead. Ventura, a 25-year-old pitcher for the World Series-winning Kansas City Royals , died today in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. It’s unclear exactly what happened to cause the crash, but according to Sports Illustrated, it’s believed that he was under the influence at the time of the crash. A Dominican police chief first broke the news of the crash, tweeting in Spanish “Regrettable!! It is the player YORDANO VENTURA the person who died in an accident in Juan Adrian at dawn today.” Later, the Vice President of Communications and Broadcasting for the Royals confirmed the news. “It is with a heavy and broken heart that we confirm the passing of Yordano Ventura,” he tweeted. “The club will release a statement soon. #RIPAce” — Ace, of course, being Ventura’s nickname. The Royals released an official press release just a few hours ago to “regretfully announce the passing of Yordano Ventura, who perished in a car accident last night in the Dominican Republic.” In the statement, Dayton Moore, general manager of the Royals, said “Our prayers right now are with Yordano’s family as we mourn this young man’s passing.” “He was so young and so talented, full of youthful exuberance and always brought a smile to everyone he interacted with.” “We will get through this as an organization,” Moore concluded, “but right now is a time to mourn and celebrate the life of Yordano.” The statement also included some information about Ventura’s short career, which he spent entirely with the Royals “after signing as a non-drafted free agent in 2008” before “debuting for the club” in 2013. He played two World Series with the team, helping bring them their second ever victory in 2015. During the last game Ventura played, he wore a special hat that paid tribute to two other baseball players who died too soon: Jose Fernandez who died last fall in a boating accident , and Oscar Taveras who died in a car crash a few years ago. Ventura’s teammates are already sending messages of mourning and love on Twitter. “I love you Ace,” third baseman Mike Moustakas wrote. “I don’t know what to say other than I’m going to miss you a lot. RIP ACE.” First baseman Eric Hosmer tweeted “ACE I love you my brother. I’m in disbelief and don’t know what to say. I love you ACE.” Drew Butera, a catcher for the Royals, wrote “Gone way too soon. You will forever be my brother. My prayers are with you and your family. May you rest with the Lord now.” Fellow pitcher Kyle Zimmer wrote “We lost a great one today. Hard to believe he’s actually gone. You will be greatly missed, Ace.” Hunter Dozier said “I’m at a loss of words today.. Very sad day in the baseball community. You’ll be missed Ace.” “When you scroll down and your whole newsfeed is talking about your brother,” left fielder Terrance Gore mused. “The impact the energy you brought to our team #GoneTooSoon” “I am still in disbelief,” pitcher Matt Strahm wrote. “I am going to miss you Ace! The clubhouse won’t be the same without you.” General manager Dayton Moore added “We love Yordano. We love his heart & who he was as a teammate & friend. He challenged us & made us better. We’re going to miss him.” Our thoughts and prayers go out to all affected by this tragic death.
